The ConferenceThe Scottish Practice Management Development Network (SPMDN) is hosting its 10th annual conference at The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre, Clydebank this year. The ‘Network’s’ conference is unique, in that it is designed by Practice Managers for Practice Managers in Scotland. This conference which runs over two days will attract around 200 delegates.

To effectively manage in the current economic climate, we must be aware of the potential challenges facing us and be prepared to constantly innovate and look to ‘Doing Things Differently’ if we hope to achieve more with less. The SPMDN conference aims to encourage Practice Managers to look outside the Practice, understand the bigger picture and re-evaluate their priorities. We have put together a challenging programme to support you in doing so.

Scotland and England’s health strategies are becoming increasingly disparate and having the opportunity to hear first hand of The Scottish Government Health Department’s plans for Primary Care and the Integration of Health and Social Care is very important. We have been fortunate in attracting two of The Scottish Governments key leaders to advise us what Scotland is ‘doing differently.’

We look forward to welcoming you to our exciting 2013 Conference.

Who should attend? The conference will be of interest to all Practice Managers, Assistant Practice Managers, GPs and anyone directly involved in primary care. It will also provide an excellent opportunity to enhance professional and personal networks and provide learning opportunities for professional progression.

The VenueThe four-star Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre in Clydebank, near Glasgow, has a waterfront location on the banks of the River Clyde, just minutes from the M8, with a fully equipped gym, sauna, steam room, spa pool and 15m indoor pool plus free parking for 300 cars. The venue was awarded Conference Hotel of the Year 2012 at the Scottish Hotel Awards.

1. Locality Planning in an Integrated World Alison Taylor Policy Lead, Integration Division, Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorate

The Scottish Government recognises the importance and potential benefits of strong clinical and professional leadership in local decision making. The Bill to integrate adult health and social care will include a requirement on the new Health and Social Care Partnerships to ensure appropriate opportunities for professionals - including GPs, acute clinicians, social workers, nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists and others - to take an active role in, and provide leadership for, local planning of service provision. This workshop provides an opportunity to explore the implications of the new arrangements for practice managers, and to discuss the challenges and opportunities that will emerge.

2. Time, Work and Life Load Management You Look Very Busy - How About Some Results? David Lee Institute of Healthcare Management Royal Society for Public Health

There is nothing quite like having some insight into a topic based on everyday experience, and to most delegates, this workshop will be close to hearts and minds! The Session will allow delegates to focus and reflect on their personal approach to workload and time management in a world which can easily overwhelm, where being busy rarely achieves anything, and where effectiveness, efficiency and effort are increasingly being asked for as applied benchmarks. Using a holistic emphasis, there will be some experienced insights, a little provocation and an opportunity to explore delegates perceived workload management approaches and challenges, together with some of the tools and techniques available.

1. The View From Outside Pennie Taylor

Health Journalist

This interactive workshop will focus on outsiders’ perceptions of General Practice in Scotland, drawing upon participants’ personal experiences as patients/clients, carers and media-savvy members of the public. It will explore prevalent attitudes, common blocks to development, and aims to identify scope for improvement. The workshop will encourage creative approaches to problem-solving and intends to stimulate ideas that can be taken back into the workplace and used to make positive changes on the practice frontline.

2. Patient Entitlement to NHS Care Brian Donohoe, NHS Scotland Counter Fraud Services plus Home Office Representive

Fraud in the NHS costs the service millions of pounds every year, that could mean people not getting the NHS treatment they deserve.

Only a small number of healthcare professionals, staff and patients seek to defraud the NHS, but it is important to be able to identify those areas of misuse of resources and reduce this to an absolute minimum.

The aim of this workshop is to address the areas of concern, common to practices, with regard to patient’s entitlement to access NHS care, what guidance is available to clarify the issues and how Counter Fraud Services and the Home Office are working together to minimise the risks.

Managing the partners in your practice is one of the most challenging aspects of a practice manager’s life. Getting in the driving seat of your relationship with them is no easy task but can be done!

This workshop looks at how you can improve your current influencing and persuading skills including:

• Ensuring the proper structures are in place.

• Making requests.

• Responding to demands and the conflicting priorities of the partners.

• Saying ‘No’ whilst enhancing your relationship - yes it is possible!

4. The Patient Advice and Support Service Christine Lang, Patient Advice and Support Service National Co-ordinator, Citizens Advice Scotland

The Patient Advice and Support Service, delivered by Citizens Advice Bureau, supports people to give feedback, make comments, raise concerns or make a complaint about treatment and care provided by the NHS in Scotland. The majority of our clients want to ensure their experiences are heard and that their feedback helps to improve the service delivered by the NHS. This workshop will provide an opportunity to work in groups to discuss how best to handle and learn from feedback you receive, ensuring a fair and positive outcome for both patients and staff.
