IF I WERE PRINCIPAL OF MY OWN SCH

If I could completely run the school on my own rules, things would be a lot different

Keep some of the rules the same.

I went to an all-girl, catholic school; no nail varnish, skirts at knee length and noexhibitionist hair styles.

The school was very much anti-bullying and believed that by taking these precautionthis reduced the risk of bullying taking place.

Naturally, the idea of being bullied because of the colour of your nail varnish seemedbizarre to us.

Maybe this was because I was blessed with a tight knit group of amazing girls I am sthis day, best friends with.

MY OWN SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

As a prefect of the school in sixth year, I did become aware that not everyone had thesame life changing six years as I did.

Not everyone left school every day looking forward to seeing their friends again thefollowing day.

Some girls dreaded the thought of school.

If I were principal, I would not want any one of my pupils to feel that way.

Enhance the guidance counselling in the school first and fore most.Ensure that each students as they enter school, throughout their first year, are exposed tsome sort of one to one time with a teacher where they can express their thoughts andanxieties towards starting their first year in post-primary education.Personally, I did receive this one to one counselling in my first year, but this was due tocircumstances. There were girls in my year in much greater need of that time than I was.

EVERY TEACHER SHOULD ENJOY TH

That may sound like a lot to ask, but for students as influenced as they are, itimportant that teacher are delivering education with a positive frame of mind just because that is the job they happened to land in.

There is nothing more I want to do in my life than become a teacher.

I love working with people and watch people develop in life after being influby my teaching.

I would hope that the teachers I would employ in my school would have the want and the same desire to give back.

I had some fantastic teachers in my time and I know I will be taking leaves otheir books when it comes to my own teaching approach.

THE CURRICULUM

I was one of the lucky few who never had an issue with the curriculum.I was an academic, sporty student.

The syllabus agreed with me and I agreed with the syllabus.

If I had my own say, I would change the emphasis placed upon the Leaving Cert.

It is evident to everyone that the Leaving Cert puts unimaginable stress of the studen

If I had my way, I would put a lot more project work into it along the way, ensuring tstudent have some percentage of their grade before they step into the exam.

I feel this would really lift the weight off their students throughout the year where thmeant to decide what they want to do with the rest of their lives.

I feel the group work involved in projects would also help students as they enter intoreal world after school.

ADDING A PERSONAL TOUCH

The day the teacher remembered my name, for me, was always the day I felt mattered in the class.

I want my teachers to know their students for who they are.

Learn a little more about their students other than just the grades they get.

Learn to adapt their classes and their learning based on the needs and the abi

of the students. The students with the artistic flare should be allowed to let this talent blossom. The students who are itching to be constantly active should be accommodated for.Let the students learn kinetically, if they are unable to concentrate for more than 20minutes, give the class a half time, let them walk around the room.

THIS IS MY OWN VISION

Some of these ideas may sound far fetched, and the education system may neallow us to put this kind of teaching into place.

But this is my own vision of how I would like my school to work.

Regardless, in my own teaching, I will make a full conscious effort to know mstudents on a personal basis and make them have the best experience of postprimary teaching as I can offer.

My own school experience was fantastic and that is thanks to my teachers asmuch as it is to the people I met along the way.
