s you’ll have read in last month’s issue Liz Wright has left the magazine to work full time for The Donkey Sanctuary and in doing so left the editors position vacant. I would like to thank Andy and Claire for offering me the chance to take over as editor and thank Liz as she first allowed me to join Discovering March as a contributor back in December.

This is traditionally the time of year where we are all hoping for a nice stretch of decent weather. It’s also a time of year where many people take the time to get away from the stresses of life and recharge their batteries. For me though this time of year has presented a great opportunity.

Editing this issue of Discovering March has been a challenge but an enjoyable one and it’s certainly been a great learning experience and there are some things that I’ve learnt not to do for future editions.

This month we have some great stories about the heroic exploits of March men, Benjamin Gimbert and Ken Clifton as well as Australian pilot Jim Hocking who during the Second World War saved March from disaster. We have a retrospective look back at the 15th March Summer Festival, which despite the rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended.

We’ve put together a guide for all the summer fayres taking place at our schools, we have a profile of March Cricket Club and you can read all about the new board of March Chamber of Commerce and their aims for the year ahead.

There is also some exciting news for film fans in March as you’ll no longer need to travel to Peterborough or Huntingdon because the Light Cinema is now open for business in Wisbech.

MARCH SUMMER FESTIVAL 2014

| Event round-up

Photos by Georges

Despite the downpour that meant there was a much smaller crowd than usual watching the parade, the 15th March Summer Festival Weekend turned out to be as amazing as ever.Once again thousands of people flocked to West End Park to enjoy the great variety of music, the Classic Vehicle and Gala Parades through the town, the variety of stalls and amusements in the Lions Gala and a host of activities during the Picnic in the Park. The weekend prompted many favourable comments from those in attendance including Margaret Oatey MBE, she said: “we had friends down from Halifax. They have a party in their park but it has nothing like the atmosphere of the one we have here in March.” The March Summer Festival Committee

would like to thank MC John Whitehead, the stallholders, the parade participants, the numerous volunteers who helped run the event and local businesses who have given help, prizes and sponsorship. The Committee would also like to hear from you if you’re willing to offer to help or contribute ideas for future festivals, if you would like to do so please contact Clive Lemmon at the Town Hall on 01354 653709. For the full report of the event and to see more festival photographs visit the festival website: www.marchsummerfestival.co.uk

Dear readers, I recently attended The Bourne and District Neighbourhood Watch meeting and, as always, I find these events very useful, informative and a great forum for finding out what is going on in your local community. There are many benefits of being part of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, as they are one of the largest and most successful crime prevention initiatives. It is a method of developing close liaison between households in a neighbourhood, the local police and the local authority. The aim is to help people protect themselves and their properties, to reduce the fear of crime and improve their local environment by:

• Improved home security• Greater vigilance• Fostering a community spirit

It has been proven that areas that operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by rogue traders and distraction burglars. There are many advantages to be gained from being part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, including a sense of greater contentment and security amongst participants and a feeling of being involved in the community - bringing back the community spirit and giving you peace of mind.

The Bourne and District Neighbourhood Watch covers a large area of South Lincolnshire, including the Deepings, Billingborough and Witham-on-the-Hill. Anyone wishing to know more, or who may wish to consider starting a group, should contact the chairman, Deputy Mayor Cllr Philip Knowles on 01778 425438 or e-mail [email protected]

70 years since……It is nearly 100 years since the declaration of the First World War in 1914, but 70 years ago three men acted in a way that was over and above the call of duty. Two of these men, Benjamin Gimbert and Ken Clifton were from March, the other was a young Australian pilot named Jim Hocking whose actions saved March from disaster. A small exhibtion is being held in March Muse-um during July to honour these men, particularly Benjamin Gimbert. Gimbert was a Driver on the railway at March who, with his Fireman James Nightall, took over a train on it’s way from Immingham Docks to Marks Tey, Essex. The date was 1st June 1944, a few days before D-Day, and the train consisted of 50 wagons of high explosives and dentanators des-tined for an American Air Force base ‘somewhere in Eseex’. Just before they reached Soham, in the early hours of June 2nd, Gimbert noticed that the first wagon behind the engine was on fire. After carefully bringing the train to a halt James Nightall climbed down from the engine and unhooked the wagon from the rest of the train. They then slowly pulled the blazing wagon away from the train in an attempt to clear Soham Station and get into the open countryside. Unfortunately as they were passing through the station the wagon exploded killing James Nightall and the Soham Signal-man Frank Bridges. Benjamin Gimbert survived, although seriuously injured. Both he and James Nightall were awarded the Geroge Cross for their actions. Very few local people know about the exploits of Ken Clifton during the Second World War. In 1941 Aircraft man Clifton was serving with the RAF in Habbaniya, sixty miles west of Baghdad. On the 8th May he was the air gunner of an Airspeed Ox-ford Mk1 P8824 on a reconnaissance flight over Ramadi, a few miles west of Habbaniya. While flying at around 1500ft the pilot, Flight Sergeant Harry Bratten, was hit by a solitary bullet which severed an artery, killing him just a few minutes later. Feeling the plane lurch, Clifton left his posi-tion and then flew the Oxford back to Habbaniya,

despite only holding the controls of the aircarft just once before. At the third attempt he man-aged to land the plane safely. For this act Clifton was immediately promoted to Leading Aircraft-man and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. On July 13th 1944, Clifton was based in Woodbridge, Suffolk when a Lutwaffe Junkers Ju 88G-1 nightfigther from Volkel, Holland landed at the airfield. The crew had become disorientated after the failure of their navagational equipment and were convinced they had landed near the Danish-German border. The plane was spotted by Clifton, now a Sergeant, who jumped into a jeep and marshalled it into a dispersal area and, with nothing more than fist power, captured the crew. The plane was fitted with the latest Lichtenstein SN-2 interceptor radar as well as Flensburg and Naxos radar detectors, which were of great value to the RAF. For this action Sergeant Clifton was mentioned in dispatches. Many March people owe their lives to the ac-tions of Jim Hocking, who for many years was an unsung hero of the town. On the 27th July 1944, the crew of a Stirling Bomber took of from Wratting Common on their final training mission, led by 21-year-old RAAF Pilot Officer Jim Hocking. 20 minutes after take-off the starboard inner engine caught fire as they ap-proached March. Still with a full fuel load and with the plane on fire, Hocking ordered his crew to bail out while he guided the plane away from the town and from total disaster. Unfortunately there wasn’t time for Hocking to follow his crew and the plane crashed and exploded near an observation post on the outskirts of the town. The two observers manning the post, Mr TJ Lewis and Mr F Fov-argue were severely burnt but survived the experi-ence. Jim Hocking recieved little acknowledge-ment of his actions until a memorial was installed in St Wendreda’s Church in 1988. Additionally a block of flats in Station Road is named after him following the action of the Jim Hocking Memorial Committee. Pictured left to right: Ken Clifton, Ben Gimbert, Jim Hocking

March Boxing Club has received £1,000 worth of new equipment, which is welcome news as part of the drive to secure better sports funding in Fenland. Having asked the boss of Boxing England to a meeting in the House of Commons to discuss grassroots sports funding, I was delighted that Mark Abberley then agreed to visit March Boxing Club and that this has now resulted in some much needed new kit. March Boxing Club does a fantastic job in the community and I know the equipment will be put to good use.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance charity is also a great organisation which is particularly important in rural areas like ours. As guest speaker at the Rotary Annual Gala Dinner in March, I had the opportunity to nominate this charity for the funds raised, which I’m pleased to say has resulted in a £700 cheque to contribute towards their good work. Thanks go to March Rotary Club both for their generous fundraising on this occasion, and also all the good work they do in the local community and for good causes internationally. Too many patients currently have to travel from Fenland for treatment in hospitals rather than accessing that care in the home or at their local GP surgery. This costs more in travel and parking, is often tiring, and makes it harder for family and friends to attend. Working closely with local GPs and backed by both local newspapers, the Cambs Times and the Fenland Citizen, I have launched a health community campaign to secure more localised treatment. This identifies

10 issues we can and should get delivered within the next 12 months. I am asking residents to register their support by signing a Parliamentary Petition so we can show the demand for change at www.treatmelocal.net.

Growing businesses are important to our local economy so I was pleased this month to visit agricultural suppliers Agrifac at their new March premises. The firm has expanded from four to twenty staff recently under the leadership of Managing Director Adam Carse, and it is good to see such a dynamic team flying the flag for Fenland in the agricultural market.

Throughout Britain commemorations have taken place to mark the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings. I’m proud to be supporting The Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Heroes Return’ programme, which can provide WW2 veterans grants to enable them, along with their spouse and carers, to make trips back to places across the world where they served, or make a commemorative visit in the UK. I have written to the March Royal British Legion to bring the scheme to their attention and if you know of anyone who qualifies please visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/prog_heroes_return

I have campaigned for a clampdown on illegal foreign vehicles using our roads without paying road tax or having insurance or an MOT. I can now confirm that the Government have agreed to introduce new automatic registration checks at our ports to respond to the concerns I raised, so that all motorists are treated equally. In the past Cambridgeshire Police told me they had no way of knowing whether a foreign vehicle had been in the UK longer than six months, which allowed some foreign motorists to avoid paying their tax and insurance.

It may be difficult to believe but now is the time when a lot of hard work needs to be done to keep the garden looking its best. Some of the hardy perennials you planted in the autumn will need to be either cut back or the flowers snipped off to ensure they carry on looking their best for the summer. Lupins, penstemon, hardy geraniums and delphiniums will all need pruning to encourage more flowers, but don’t forget to cut back the side shoots on wisteria to keep it tidy. For light pruning such as this Skylark would recommend Wolf Garden’s bypass secateurs, not only do they have a comfort grip suitable for both left and right handers, they also come with a 10 year guarantee.

The lawn is the considered to the centrepiece of the garden and unfortunately the secret to a good lawn is hard work, but Skylark can help you make it a little easier. As long as there isn’t a drought the lawn will need regular feeding. The best product is Evergreen Lawn, Feed, Weed & Moss Killer; it now has a new, stronger formula to give you a greener and thicker lawn. There will be the inevitable dry spell throughout summer when the blades on the lawn mower will need raising slightly to help retain moisture and keep the lawn greener. Remember don’t panic if the lawn goes brown once it has rained the grass will return, if you cannot wait for the rain a Hozelock sprinkler can be your salvation, just make sure you move the sprinkler regularly to avoid saturating one section of the lawn.

Pests will become a problem for those looking to grow their own vegetables or for the flower gardener. In wet periods slugs and snails will munch their way through your crops and flowers, but there are a number of solutions available and the best is the ubiquitous slug pellet. Scott’s Slug Clear is the market leader; use the pellets sparingly as only a scattering is needed due to their toxicity. If you would like to simply deter them, Vitax’s Slug Gone Wool Pellets are the best option. They will form a mat around the plant, which is toxic to slugs, and is very difficult to traverse as it absorbs moisture from the slug’s foot, keeps moisture in the soil and prevents weeds from germinating.

Chairman Les Mills explained the current set-up at the club, he said: “There’s cricket here every Saturday and Sunday from April until September. We have four teams on who play on a Saturday and two on a Sunday. We get quite a few supporters on a Saturday and it’s a lovely pleasant spot to come and sit in the sunshine, have a beer and watch some cricket. “Then in the week, during the summer, we have boy’s u-11s, u-13s and u-15s, we’ve also got a girls and ladies section as well; they’ve got several girls playing in the county team so they’re quite good.” Les also commented on how, in years gone by, the Avenue Sports Ground has played host to Cambridgeshire’s county side, which saw some of the biggest names in English cricket visit March, he said: “prior to Twenty20 we used to have what they called the NatWest competition, about 10-20 years ago. We had Michael Vaughan play here for Yorkshire against Cambridgeshire the day after he was named England One Day captain. “Dominic Cork took a hat-trick against the West Indies for England and played here for Derbyshire the next day, we’ve also had people like Ian Botham play for Worcestershire here on the ground. They used to be big days, we used to have a thousand people here it was wonderful.” Running a modern day cricket club can be a challenging task as Pat Ringham, Fixture

Secretary and Website Editor, explained, he said: “If you look at our club it’s like a family business. The players are the family and the cricket club is the business and you have to run it like a business now to survive. “There’s a lot that goes on in the background and I would say that the likes of Les and myself, and people like us up and down the country are probably working almost every day on cricket, even during the winter as well. Whether Les is serving behind the bar or I’m doing fixtures, people are cutting the square, I’m doing the website it’s just ongoing.” An upcoming event being put on by the club is the three day sports festival, which this year takes place between Tuesday 29th and Thursday 31st of July. “This is the 10th year we’ve done it,” said Chairman Les Mills. “It’s the first week of the summer holidays and is for boys and girls aged between six and twelve, and we do all sorts of sports coaching. “This year they’ll be doing cricket, rugby, tag rugby, mini-hockey, boxing, athletics and squash so they do all these different sports, and then on the Thursday we have a big presentation evening and the children get a goody bag, a baseball cap, a tennis ball, a medal, sweets, a certificate all sorts of things. It’s gone extremely well over the years.”

Canine Travel Sickness

Signs of Canine Travel Sickness:

- Excessive salivating or drooling- Reluctance to get in vehicles- Uncharacteristic behaviour when travelling- General appearance of being unhappy

The good news is that there are things you can do to help prevent your dog feeling sick.

Travel Tips to Help Prevent Canine Travel Sickness:

- Get dogs used to travelling in cars as early as possible in their lives and make car journeys a regular occurrence- Introduce dogs to travelling short distances by car and work your way up to longer journeys- Let travelling by car be associated as a positive experience, such as being walked when you reach your destination

-Feed them with plenty of time left before you travel- Take regular breaks on long journeys and make fresh water available- If possible encourage your dog(s) to look out the front or rear window, this will allow them to fix on a distant object (such as the horizon) and should reduce feelings of nausea- Allow fresh air into the car

If your dog is one of the unlucky ones that suffer from travel sickness, even after you’ve adopted all the tips above, there is now a non-drowsy travel sickness tablet that can be prescribed by your Vet and taken up to an hour before travelling to prevent sickness. So wherever you are going in the car, your dog can enjoy coming with you too.

Book an appointment to speak to your Vet if your dog suffers from travel sickness or visit www.dog-car-sickness.co.uk for further help and information.

It is believed that around a third of all dogs suffer from what is common-ly known as car travel sickness. Whilst a dog can develop travel sickness at any point in its life, if they suffered from it as a puppy it usually stays with them for life.

Top Financial Concerns

According to a recent Gallup poll* of Americans, these are the matters that worry ordinary people the most:

1. Not having enough money in retirement2. Not being able to pay medical costs in the event of a serious illness or accident3. Not being able to maintain the standard of living you enjoy4. Not having enough money to pay off your debt5. Not being able to pay medical costs for normal healthcare

1. Is a concern for many British families, state benefits are insufficient for most and few individuals are putting enough aside for later life following changes to employer pension schemes and reduced contribution levels.2. The financial impact from being unable to work due to sickness or accident can be devastating. Protecting the person(s) that generate household income is a fundamen-tal piece of financial planning. A review of a cash flow analysis can illustrate the impact of such an event – this is part of the work I do for my clients.3. In addition to long term savings and in-vestments, it is important to efficiently plan for planned and unexpected expenditure. A

simple way to increase returns is to reduce exposure to taxation in it’s many forms.4. Being in control of borrowing is important, your mortgage, credit cards and loans where appropriate need to be part of a financial plan.5. In America the cost of health care differs from the provision of NHS care – however, we also have private health care, getting the best value for money plan to serve the whole fam-ily can be a valuable protection plan.

Some planning concerns establishing ‘safety nets’ to protect when things go wrong. Other planning can involve making the best use of sav-ings and investments through management of funds and reducing taxation.

If you are concerned about anything financial, get some independent financial advice. The initial meeting is at my expense, then if you need further help we can discuss a way forward. Knowledge is Power (attributed to Francis Ba-con) if you know where you are now and where you are going – you become more powerful!

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured on it.The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.*http://www.gallup.com/poll/168626/retirement-re-mains-americans-top-financial-worry.aspx

What type of power of attorney do I require?

With the holiday season fast approaching, you may be wondering how your financial and legal affairs may be dealt with whilst you are away in the sun.

You may be half way through a conveyancing transaction and due to changes in time zones, may not be able to speak to your conveyancer to authorise them to exchange contracts, All that careful planning for a new home falls apart.

There is a very simple document which you could leave behind giving your conveyancer

or a close friend or member of the family authority to sign the contract or transfer on your behalf while you are away. The document is called a General (or Ordinary) Power of Attorney.

In England and Wales the General Power of Attorney only relates to your property and affairs. You can also limit the time in which the Power of Attorney may be used. In any event, the document will only be valid for one year from the date of execution. The Power of Attorney does not have to be registered, however

the person to whom you are granting the authority may not use such authority to make decisions with regard to your personal welfare.

If, for any reason, you become incapable of making decisions on your own behalf, the Power of Attorney is immediately void.

Next month: Lasting Powers of Attorney

On September 2nd this year, Golding Young Auctioneers will be celebrating 150 years of being at the forefront of the antiques and auctions market. Golding Young have continually adapted their business to achieve record prices throughout collectors’ markets as times and fashions have changed.

The Bourne Auction Rooms will be celebrating this landmark anniversary by hosting a truly special sale alongside the Grantham and Lincoln Auction Rooms.

As the newest member of the Golding Young family, the Bourne Auction Rooms are proud of the heritage that the building commands as the former home of the B.R.M. Formula 1 motor racing team. Included, in the sale are some very special items, including a selection of Raymond Mays’s property; his 1963 race diary an example of a truly unique item. Raymond Mays was the legendary owner and racing driver for E.R.A. before setting up B.R.M.

Interesting tools have always played a strong part in sales at the Bourne Auction Rooms and the Anniversary Sale will be no exception; two scarce and highly collectable Norris wood planes will attract a lot of attention.

Local art will play an integral part in the Anniversary Sale, as a splendid collection of paintings by local artist R.A. Gardner will take pride of place, alongside a fine selection of art from Belgian painters, such as Eugene Verboeckhoven and Charles Brias. Also included is a fantastic piece by the much loved British artist Louis Wain. Whilst Wain is best known for his anthropomorphised depictions of Victorian cats, the piece included in the Anniversary Sale is a less common composition of the canine variety. goldingyoung.com

There is a good selection of fine ceramics, spanning the most creative period of William and Walter Moorcroft. A lot worth noting is an early James McIntyre bowl decorated by William Moorcroft; shortly after the production of this item, William formed his own company distributing his wares through such institutions as Liberty & Co and Tiffany.

uly perhaps the warmest month of the year, can also be a time of heavy rain. The agriculturalist Arthur Young recorded in mid- July 1800 that he found in ten miles of land between Whittlesea and March, usually ‘under great crops of cole, oats and wheat, there was nothing to be seen but desolation’. In some places, crops sown late because of flooding until May had not grown. This was a great loss as land rent and planting the land were so expensive, plus a heavy drainage tax. Crops on higher land were very late. (1) July is traditionally a time of village feasts, summer fairs and holidays. Feasts, once holy days celebrating religious events or saints’ days, were held in July in various Cambridgeshire villages. July 15th is the feast of St Swithin, with its supposed weather prediction. March in Bloom is judged on July 8th in 2014. In July 1914 March Flower Show was held in the grounds of Elmwood House kindly lent by Mr Alfred Johnson. It was an ‘excellent exhibition’ despite the lower entry of exhibits. The Hon. Secretary was Mr H Coy and the President, the Reverend S S Walton. The March Shire and Hackney Horse and Foal Show, held its 16th annual exhibition in July 1914: ‘A Capital All-round Exhibition, Aeroplane Attracts Record Crowd, Successful Flights & Looping the Loop’. The President in 1914 was Mr H Mallaby-

Deeley, owner of the Coldham Estate, and the Chairman of the Committee was Mr H H Truman. The Secretary Mr Herbert Hall was very pleased to know that the ‘trades people of March had subscribed very liberally’ to support the show – perhaps because of the change in location from the delightful surroundings of Estover to the Recreation Ground and adjoining field which were more accessible to townspeople. (2) Friday July 31st 1914 was a fine day, when March elementary schools closed for the ‘harvest holidays’. Grain in the March fields had ripened and already that week a great deal of corn had been cut. (3) From an early age children of farm workers worked on the land as bird scarers, gleaners after harvest etc. When harvest came, everyone was called to help which in late Victorian times meant taking children out of school despite school attendance being made compulsory. Therefore school summer holidays became longer and for many years were called ‘harvest holidays’.

Pre-Nuptial and Post-Nuptial Agreements. Will they become part of matrimonial law?

P re-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements have been becoming increasingly common over recent years, but, at present, are still not formally recognised as a part of English law. The Law Commission has recently looked into this further and have recommended that such agreements should now become a part of matrimonial law, subject to certain conditions. However, although these agreements are not yet formally recognised, where parties have entered into one and the marriage subsequently fails, the existence of a pre or post-nuptial agreement is something which the Court will have serious regard to. Both parties must be aware that no agreement between them can override the legislation which is in place to govern how a Court deals with financial and property matters within matrimonial proceedings and cannot take away the Judge’s discretion to decide upon the appropriate division of assets on a divorce. This means that a pre or post-nuptial agreement cannot stop a spouse applying to the Court for financial provision from the other when divorce proceedings have been issued, but the case law is such that the Court should give effect to a pre or post-nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party, as long as each party has a full appreciation of its implications. It is increasingly common that the Court would seek to uphold such an agreement unless it feels that it would be unfair to hold the parties to their agreement for some reason, usually because of some unforeseen event which has changed the circumstances of the parties. In other words, if a couple enter into a pre or post-nuptial agreement, they should do so with the intention and the assumption that it will be binding.

by Melinda Smith, Family Law Solicitor Legal corner |

There are various safeguards which need to be in place in order to ensure that the agreement is given serious consideration by the Court in any subsequent divorce proceedings and it is important that advice is taken well in advance of a wedding to ensure there is plenty of time for the couple to discuss how they want to approach it and for the agreement to be drawn up. That said, a couple can have an agreement drawn up after they are married, this being a post nuptial agreement but the same principles apply. It is not only couples who are looking at setting up home together who can enter into such an agreement. Even if a couple have been living together for any length of time, a living together or cohabitation agreement can be drawn up if both parties are happy to enter into it. Although it can be a difficult discussion to have with your intended, pre-nuptial agreements can save parties both money and additional stress and upset if the marriage breaks down and can also provide some assurance to family members where money or property is being gifted, lent, or inherited, in that it can show what is intended to happen to such money if the parties go their separate ways. Such agreements can also be particularly important where the couple have children from previous relationships and want to

preserve assets for those respective children should the relationship fail.

As unromantic as it seems, discussing a pre- nuptial agreement

is definitely something which should be considered where one or other party is coming into the marriage with assets which he or she wishes to preserve. Of course, everyone would hope that the agreement may never have to be relied on, but for most couples the peace of mind

that it brings makes the existence of such an agreement well worth it.

he 4th August 2014 marks the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, an enormously significant date in the histories of so many nations. I’m sure we all have ancestors who fought and possibly paid the ultimate price during this conflict. There were over 16 million deaths and more than 20 million wounded rank-ing it among the deadliest conflicts in history. To honour this huge sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy today The March Branch of The Royal British Legion will hold a commemorative service at St Peters Church on 4th August at 11 p.m. to coincide with the time war was declared, you are invited to join us. The British Legion was formed in 1921 and gained royal status in 1971, the Legions purpose then was as it remains today to provide practical, emotional and financial support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their dependents in times of need. We are recognised as the nations’ custodians of remembrance. On behalf of the Council and Citizens of March we organise The March Town Remembrance Parade, under the expert guid-ance of our Parade Marshall Major N Spencer MBE RE, this has become a major event in the town and this year’s parade will take place on Sunday 9th November.
