With wedding season in full swing, blossom on the trees, and summer beckoning us with some gloriously sunny days recently, we have a fabulous edition ready for you, just begging to be enjoyed al fresco, whilst relaxing in the garden, or perhaps even with a cool drink in one of our local pub gardens.

Father’s Day is coming up this month. Perhaps your dad took you fishing, on bike rides in the countryside, or to the local

swimming pool? Maybe they’re the reason why you still support that failing football team season after season? Does yours always insist on winning at Monopoly? Either way, don’t forget to pay a little tribute to them on the 19th.

Our June issue is, as ever, all set to keep you up to date with what’s going on in an around The Deepings this month. I love hearing all about what’s going on in our local schools, and how people in the area are constantly finding new and exciting ways to raise money for good causes. I hope you’ll agree that there’s a great balance of articles to suit everyone, from those hitting the gym, eating out and about, addressing their finances or venturing into the potting shed …and don’t forget to keep an eye out for those police drones!

I’d like to thank all of our regular contributors, the whole of the Discovering team for their continued hard work, and lastly, welcome our new editor, Zoe, who has recently joined our crazy team!

Thanks Claire! I am so happy to be on board! My 30s have been all about trying to be a “Yes-person”, so I jumped at the opportunity to join the magazine. I am a Lincolnshire girl, but having only lived in The Deepings for the last year or so, I can’t wait to be part of exploring this beautiful part of the world. We really are so lucky to have some incredible local resources, explored throughout these yummy, glossy pages.

From local history, advice and handy tips from experts in the area, to a plethora of opportunities to get involved in

charitable events, or clubs where we can hang out with like-minded people, such as the Deepings Flower Club featured on page 46, The Deepings is clearly a vibrant community to be part of. Having recently sampled whale and reindeer in Denmark, I have also really enjoyed reading all about cuisine from around the world on page 6.

Well, that’s enough from me, for now. I could go on gushing about how fabulous our area is, but there’s not enough space! It’s time for you all to find a quiet, comfy spot, sit back, relax and enjoy the read. Oh, and please do get in contact with me! I’d love to hear from you...

Travel Titillates Taste Buds - Advice from Travel Counsellors

With us....it ’s personal

1. Cape Town, South Africa With a world class dining scene and a strong pound, South Africa is an exotic and affordable destination. Not only will you discover some of the world’s tastiest food, but you can also sample some of the finest wines on a tour of the expansive winelands which surround the city. You’ll find dishes influenced by the indigenous population, the Dutch, French, Indians and Malaysians in a range of vibrant cuisine that’s guaranteed to leave you wanting more.

My Top Pick: Biltong is a thinly sliced, air dried meat snack, usually made from beef or game such as springbok. It is cured in a mixture of vinegar, salt, sugars and spices and goes great with an ice cold beer.

2. Morocco Morocco’s diverse and distinctive cuisine embraces meaty tagines, light,

fluffy couscous, sweet, honey-coated pastries and deliciously refreshing mint teas. These complex and intriguing flavours are a winning combination, which can be sampled throughout Morocco, whether you’re trekking in the Atlas Mountains or enjoying a weekend city break.

My Top Pick: Tagine: Named after the conical clay cooking pot in which it is cooked, tagines are a delicious stew of tender meat and local vegetables, sometimes with the addition of olives or preserved fruit, and always served with fresh bread for mopping up all those tasty juices.

3. Japan One of the healthiest in the world, Japanese cuisine combines the delicate flavours of raw vegetables with rice, raw fish and the piquant flavours of wasabi, ginger and soy. Japanese cuisine boasts

a large variety of dishes and regional specialities, including sushi, tempura, tofu, rice, ramen, curry and pickles.

My Top Pick: Sushi is the most famous Japanese dish outside of Japan and no trip would be complete without sampling the delicious range of fresh sushi and sashimi, right where it all began.

That wraps up my top destinations for foodies. So, if all this talk of food has got your taste-buds tingling, then call me today to discuss your next tailor-made foodie break and discover some fantastic deals to these destinations.

Charity Ball Leads to Tired Feet … but Loads of Cash! The Charity Ball, held in aid of Friends of Chernobyl Children (Helpston branch) on March 12th, at The Angel Hotel in Bourne, was a great success. The target was to raise £600 for the charity and, delighted to report, this target was exceeded … to a whopping £910! The food provided by The Angel was delicious and is to be highly recommended for functions. The live band, The Great Pretenders, was superb. It was great to see the dance floor filled and, although everyone had tired feet by the end of the night, it was great fun.

Not only would we like to thank everyone who came along and supported the event, but we’d also like to thank the following for the many donations we received for the raffle and for our auction; Illusions, Jamie Blackbourn Art, Chris Saint Communications, The Garden Media and Communications Company, Groovy Foods, Blush Bridal, Renu, Burghley House, Grimsthorpe Castle, Harvey’s Gym, Big Sky, Griffin Inn, Slice of Life Photography, Sweet Little Things … to name but a few. A large donation was also received from Bourne Round Table, for which, many thanks. If you would like any more information on the charity, please visit www.focc-helpston.com

PlayZone Kids Club – Outstanding … Again! With its tenth anniversary approaching this year, staff, children and parents at PlayZone are thrilled to be celebrating the club’s recent Ofsted report, which rated it as ‘outstanding in all areas’ for a second time, a grading which was previously awarded in 2011, when they were also rated ‘outstanding’ across the board. PlayZone Kids Club Ltd, a before and after-school club based in Langtoft, was established in 2006 by Dorinda Unsworth and Sandra Seal in a classroom, in the grounds of Langtoft Primary School, and has since gone from strength to strength. The facility offers high quality childcare for children, aged between four

and eleven years, from 7.45am to 6pm and during most school holidays. They provide a safe, secure, and happy environment

with caring, qualified staff. Ofsted reported that “staff provide an outstanding, friendly and child- centred environment where children flourish.” Manager, Dorinda Unsworth says: “It’s such an achievement to get one ‘outstanding’, but to get it again, is so wonderful and we are so very proud.”

PlayZone prides itself on its continuing outstanding practice. For details of registration and dates, and to read the full Ofsted report, please visit their website www. playzonekidsclub.co.uk or, to book a term time or summer holiday place, please contact Dorinda on 07858252207 or 01778348423.

Deepings Rotary Charity AuctionThe Rotary Club of the Deepings recently held a “Favours Charity Auction” at Tallington Lakes. It proved a great success, with Rotarians and businesses donating services, their time and items, which resulted in a magnificent £3400.00 being raised for good causes.

The organisers would like to thank all of those who contributed, with special mention to Stephen Duffy at Buckles Solicitors, (who kindly gave vouchers for time and services), and to Rotarian, Fred Sandall, (who donated a holiday in France). Other pledges, which included afternoon tea, meals at The Boundary and Tallington Restaurant, “slave for a day”, gardening and painting, plus many more, were snapped up by generous punters.

This was a fun-filled evening and was organised by Rotarian, Jill Thomas and her team, with the wonderful help of auctioneer, Adrian Smith.

Slimmers’ Ball - A”Huge Success”On Saturday April 23rd, the region hosted the very first Cambridge Weight Plan Slimmers’ Ball. The event, held at The Holiday Inn, Thorpe Wood was open to all Cambridge Weight Plan slimmers, past and present.

Cambridge Weight Plan has had over thirty years of success in the UK as a trusted weight loss plan. Their combination of ongoing research and development, top quality meal replacement products and the unique one-to-one support offered by their consultants means consistent success for their clients in losing and maintaining their weight.

The organizers, local Consultants Kelli Taylor, Paula Meeks, Tanya Setterfield and Martin Schoenbeck were thrilled by the support and feedback they had for the event. “We worked out that the weight loss achievement of the guests at the ball was an outstanding 137 stone! Everyone has worked so hard to improve their well-being and lifestyle; they truly deserved to be celebrated.”

An impressive £600 was raised on the night for the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity. Fantastic prizes donated by local businesses were up for grabs in the raffle, and Market Deeping photographer Tom Clare was on hand to provide professional studio style photographs for all the guests, with a proportion of print sales also going to the charity. Entertainment on the night was provided by award-winning Portsmouth based singer/song writer Luke Ferre and top London disco DJs Halcyon.

East Anglian Air Ambulance Fund-Raising Manager, Chris Donaldson was in attendance and commented, “My wife and I enjoyed ourselves very much with a very friendly crowd. I remain very grateful for the support of the organisers and local slimmers through this event.”

Due to its huge success, plans are already being made to repeat the event next year. Local clients just need to ask their consultants for details of how they can join in the fun!

Creative Touch | Consumer AdviceBy Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com

Safe Local Trades supporting the work of Age UK locallyIt’s daunting enough having to make contact with a tradesman, let alone trust a stranger, to enter your home and carry out maintenance work or repairs. Imagine being elderly, vulnerable and in some cases, living alone, and having to make that decision? That is why Safe Local Trades is delighted to support the work of Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. We admire the charity’s hard work and all it does for the local community – which of course could be a friend or relative reading this.Over the past seven years, Safe Local Trades has raised over £33,000 for the cause, through the personal efforts of SLT director Eileen Le Voi, trade members, family and friends. One of the most recent events was the hugely successful Insane Terrain challenge, which, to date, has raised around £2,075. Helping to achieve that great total were Hampton brother and sister, Sarah Copland and Simon Gooch – who have raised £686 in memory of their dad, John.Sarah said: “Thanks to everyone who has donated so far. We wanted to raise funds for Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, in memory of our cherished and hugely missed dad, John Gooch, who supported several charities including this one. Age comes to us all eventually and, for some, can be a challenge in itself.“It was great for us to get involved in this fantastic event, through the support of Safe Local Trades.” Would you like to join Simon, Sarah and do your bit to add to the £33,000 already raised by Safe Local Trades for the charity? Well, getting involved is just a couple of clicks away. There is still time to sign up for a 13,000 ft tandem sky dive at Sibson Airfield – which takes place on Saturday July 9th.And, if you raise £300 for charity, you will be “on cloud nine”, at receiving a free sky dive. Why not make it a team-building event and get your friends or work colleagues involved?Or, if you prefer your feet on terra firma, why not sign up for the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon (or fun run) on Sunday October 9th and fulfil a personal goal, as well as rise to a fundraising challenge? For details, call 01733 564285 or visit http://www.safelocaltrades.com/about/age-uk/fundraising-2016

Words from the MayorCouncillor Wayne Lester

Looking forward, I have thought long and hard about my charities for my second term and have chosen to support:

■ The Deepings’ Men’s Group Charities Fund

■ Army Cadet Force, 2 Squadron, 14 Troop, Market Deeping Detachment, Queen’s Royal Lancers

I hope you agree that both of these groups provide a valuable service in our community and deserve all of our support, so I would appreciate your help to raise awareness and funds, to help these groups thrive, and continue their good work. I will be holding a charity Car Boot in early June, a good time to sell off those unwanted items, and do something good at the same time; I look forward to your support on the day.

My Civic Service is to be held on Sunday 12th June at 10.00 am at St. Guthlac’s Church.

Don’t forget, you can meet your local councillor at your library... I will be on duty on Saturday 4th June, if you need to discuss any local matters, or just to pop in to have a chat.

Soon, I will be holding an evening for volunteers in the Town Hall Chambers to say thank you on your behalf to all those people that give their time freely to this community, providing services for us all.

The walking of the footpaths will be held on the 7th June 2016. Please meet outside the Town Hall at 6.30pm for a stomp through the town and local countryside, followed by light refreshments at the Bull. We hope to see you there!

Queen’s Birthday Beacon Lighting at deeping st. JamesWell the year has passed me by: so many events, so many people. My first term has been challenging at times, yet very rewarding. My duties as The Mayor of Market Deeping have taken me far and wide in Lincolnshire, and on occasion, across the water, into Cambridgeshire. I have met wonderful like-minded people, who are raising awareness and funds for charities, which mean so much to them, and to the people they serve. I am honoured to have been part of the Chaingang for 2015 – 2016. I am looking forward to meeting some new and interesting people this forthcoming term. As Chairman of the Council, I have been blessed with new staff consisting of two Clerks and two Park Keepers, to complement our existing team. The new staff members have seen out their first year, achieving fantastic results on the ground, managing our activities and business commitments wonderfully. I would like to take the opportunity to thank them for doing their jobs so well and making my job much easier!

“Flaming June” is upon us already and although we perceive it to be a warm summer month, in my experience we have had some pretty wet Junes and they have not lived up to our

expectations. However, as we approach midsummer there are more hours of daylight (more time for you to spend in the allotment!), the temperatures should be rising and you would be very unlucky to suffer a frost as late as this. June is one of the busiest months of the year for the vegetable gardener: there are crops to plant, sow, and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests – the list seems never-ending. You really do need to keep on top of all these jobs to get the best out of your plot. Did you know that in every square metre of soil there can be as many as 100,000 weeds? Yes I’m sure you do!! No wonder there is a relentless battle going on between gardener and weeds. Do keep them at bay as they use water and nutrients that your crops need and shade them from the light. As the month progresses thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. Once you are sure that frosts are over you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes. Brussels sprouts and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. It is also your last opportunity for sowing runner beans and main crop carrots. Sweetcorn can be planted out and as it is self-pollinating it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction. Traditionally Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, 21st June, as it is less likely to bolt: sowing in succession is a good idea. Don’t forget:-• Feed peppers, aubergines and tomatoes with a dilute high-potash feed every week or two to encourage flower growth and ultimately good sized fruits. • Net brassicas to deter pigeons. • Net carrots with insect proof netting to stop carrot fly• Spread mulches to deter weed growth and retain moisture in the soil.• Earth up potatoes• Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen.

Happy gardening!

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible

at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. areas and manager Mark Sherwood agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Readdressing retirement plans…

What is all this talk of “pension freedom”?New pension rules, introduced in April 2015, have given people far more choice over what they can do with their pension pots.

What used to happen? For most people, when you retired, you could take up to 25% of your pension, as tax-free cash, and the rest had to be turned into a retirement income, by buying an annuity.

What are the new rules? There are several ways you can now use your pension pot…

You can:• Buy a guaranteed income for life – an annuity

• Invest your pension in funds designed to provide you with a flexible retirement income – called ‘drawdown’ (this income is not guaranteed for life)

• Take small cash sums, from your pension, when you want them

• Take all your pension as cash in one go!

• Mix the above options

The rules around pensions have changed significantly over the last few years, and will have a major impact both on how you save for retirement, and how you access your money once you retire.

What will you need to consider? If you take cash out of your pension, then 25% of the withdrawal is likely to be tax-free (the other 75% is the taxable element).

The taxable element is added to the rest of your income for the year, and you pay Income Tax on this, in the usual way. If you take a large sum of cash, you could push your income into a higher tax bracket, and end up paying higher-rate, or even additional-rate Income Tax, on the lump sum. This increase in income may also mean you are no longer eligible for certain benefits you’re claiming.

Be careful when selecting your retirement options, and, if you have a pension, you should now be thinking about your options. As always, advice is essential, so should you require advice, please contact our office for a FREE initial consultation.

No sooner has Her Majesty the Queen fi nished sending her thank-you letters, after having celebrated her ninetieth birthday on April 21st, than the nation is now bracing itself for her “offi cial birthday”, this year on Saturday June 11th, (one day after The Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday – his ‘real’, and only, one!) So why should the dear old lady be getting two lots of presents, cake and cards, when some of us, (especially us Capricorns with our birthday within a day or two of Christmas) have sometimes struggled to get remembered at all? (Cue… violins!)

It is a tradition that was started by King George II in 1748, and one which owes its origins to the ageless problem of the British weather. George was born in November, and felt the weather would be too cold at that time of year for his annual birthday parade. So instead, he combined his

birthday celebration with an annual spring military parade, known as ‘Trooping the Colour’, in which regiments displayed their fl ags or ‘colours’ so soldiers would be familiar with them. This, it was hoped, would benefi t from taking place in brilliant, early summer sunshine.

The tradition has continued to this day. All British sovereigns have been given the option of having an ‘offi cial’ birthday and, because the Queen's ‘real’ birthday is on April 21st, she has stuck with the tradition of celebrating hers in June. During the early part of her reign, her offi cial birthday was on a Thursday, but, after seven years, it was changed to a Saturday, so that more members of the public could enjoy it.

So the real reason why Her Majesty has two birthdays? Our unpredictable British weather and tourism!

So Why Does

The QueenHave Two Birthdays?

Hypnotherapy for Pain Management

Jacqueline Preston is an associate at the Wellhead Practice, and part of the complementary healthcare team. She is a registered Clinical Hypnotherapist with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), and is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Counsellors, Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists (NACHP).

Diagnosed Aches and PainsAt times, we all suffer aches and pains from the stresses and strains of every day life. However, for some people, certain illnesses, diseases and disorders can cause complicated long-term chronic pain that frequently does not seem to have a specific cause. When conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and polymyalgia have been medically diagnosed, pain management treatment is usually offered as part of the medical intervention. Hypnotherapy and counselling may sometimes be suggested as a complementary adjunct to this conventional medical treatment.

Undiagnosed Pain – Why doesn’t anyone understand?Jacqueline says, “Where no medical cause can be found for chronic pain, many believe that a past emotional, traumatic event, or Genesis event as it is known, is retained within the body as emotional anxiety or psychological stress. If left untreated, this could

manifest itself in a physical form.” She goes on to say, “This pain is extremely complex in nature and, for the sufferer, it is very real!” It is often identified by the term psychosomatic or psychogenic pain. This is pain that is not attributable to past disease or injury, or to any visible sign of physical damage. Some of the most common types include: headaches, migraines, muscle pains, back pain, joint pain, and stomach pains.

The Mind-Body Connection At the Wellhead Practice, Jacqueline works to provide a truly unique approach to long-term pain management by addressing the mind-body connection for positive and lasting results. She says, “The way our mind acts in response to pain links it to the body as a physical sensation. This can sometimes make the sensation or discomfort worse.” During the initial confidential consultation, Jacqueline will gather a detailed background history from you. From this, she develops a personalized hypnotherapy pain-management plan, and an idea of how many sessions may be required, to assist in bringing about positive pain relief.

How does hypnosis work for pain relief? Some of the frustrating side-effects of long-term chronic pain may include insomnia, tension, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and low self-esteem. All of these can be addressed and transformed

using hypnosis. Jacqueline says, “Hypnotherapy for pain relief helps you to refocus your mind to change the thought patterns related to pain to support pain relief. Hypnosis for pain management relaxes the nervous system, to help it become less reactive to pain.” Hypnotherapy is a natural, safe, and totally drug-free therapy, without any side effects other than a feeling of calm relaxation and wellbeing.”

If you can relate to any of the information above and would like to know more, then contact the practice today to arrange your free initial telephone consultation with Jacqueline.

Important note: Pain is the body’s way of telling us that something is not right, which is why Jacqueline always suggests that you visit your GP in the first instance, if you are experiencing pain, so that it can be investigated accordingly.

Every moment, our brains receive an immense amount of information; in fact, too much to process, make sense of, and respond to.

We each have around ninety billion brain cells and have developed highly evolved brains to keep up with the world around us.

Our brains like to receive and organise information in the form of a narrative (a story). In fact, our sanity depends on our ability to make sense of things via stories and, without this inherent tool, we’d probably go insane.

This ability however can work against us.

Think about the last time you joined a gym, enrolled for a fitness class. Were your well-meant plans derailed, before reaching your goal?

Try to think of the reason why; it may have been the occasion of a missed gym session or fitness class which began the descent into failure.

Now think about how you justified that failure to yourself; what did you say to make it acceptable?

You didn’t have enough time?

You couldn’t justify the expense?

Or you possibly experienced a “YOLO” moment (You Only Live Once) and convinced yourself that fitness isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things.

That is “Narrative Bias” in action - you justify a decision by making it fit within the story of your life, even if that

“Narrative Bias”

decision isn’t a smart one. Narrative Bias however is a surprisingly simple psychological phenomenon to fight.

All it requires is an outside perspective.

Fitness instructors and personal trainers serve as a way to help you cut through your own narrative bias. They keep you on track, allowing you to see what is actually happening, and why you may not be making the health and fitness progress you expect.

Alternatively, training with someone who shares similar goals, encourages you when you lose momentum, and helps resist the temptation to stop training, can be a vital aid in achieving success.

Personal training is available at Empire Gym and we promote a social environment where members and staff positively encourage the success of others - which may be why our members generally reach their fitness goals.

For more information on Personal Training and gym membership offers please contact Empire Gym.

Are you a victim of this psychological phenomenon?

During our recent conversation, which covered the vast range of services on offer these days, I was particularly struck by Claire’s admission that almost every way in which her initial concept, (holistic treatments with a bit of pilates and yoga) has evolved, has been in response to the needs of her clients – their suggestions and opinions have been the driver for almost everything which now attracts so many ladies, (and some men who attend for pilates and treatments) to this “One-Stop Shop for Well-being”. The ladies-only gym is a recent case-in-point, along with the incredibly popular “30 minute workout” idea – a simple, yet remarkably effective notion that fits in a short burst of activity into the busy daily schedule of so many ladies.Alongside the newly introduced services offered by Claire and her fourteen staff specialists, are the long-standing favourites. Seven designated rooms offer beauty advice and treatments, including an anti-ageing option, and Claire is proud to see Renu lauded as a “Decleor Platinum Salon of the Year”; acupuncture, podiatry

and reflexology are all here; a hairdressing salon, a sunbed and a very well-frequented studio all offer so many different opportunities to focus on, and gain expert advice and encouragement to strive for, that body beautiful.Ten years have seen so much progress in Renu’s provision of healthy activities and ways in which all manner of beauty treatments can benefit its clients. Claire is happy with this formula, whilst still willing to listen to requests for possible ways to take Renu further forward. What she does enjoy focusing on now, though, is the means by which access to everything can be facilitated even more, be it on social media with newsletters, informing everyone about facilities and offers, or advice on dietary and food issues, with a “recipe of the month” a possibility.Whatever this remarkably ambitious and passionate lady decides for the future, the people of this area can continue to think themselves very fortunate that, right here, in Bourne, is one very special centre of excellence - a true “One-Stop Shop for Well-being”.

Claire Saunders and her dedicated team at Renu are celebrating this month, having seen ten successful years in the town pass, first at their West Street premises but more recently on Abbey Road, in the building which, for many years, housed a business, rather less inclined towards health, fitness and general well-being … the Marquis of Granby!

The chances are that you are one of the 35 million people in this country who know that they need to make a will and fully intend to get around to it. Even if you are not, then you probably made your will years ago, and know that it now needs updating.

Making or updating your will is remarkably easy, and doesn’t cost the earth. Ensuring that everything runs smoothly when you die, and that your family and loved ones get the maximum inheritance, isn’t at the top of everyone’s list, but if you fall into one of these groups, it should be:

• Unmarried with children,

• Unmarried and co-habiting,

• In a second or third marriage/ relationship,

• Over 60 and concerned about future care needs,

• Diagnosed with any degenerative condition.

Remember, if you don’t have a will, you don’t have a say in how your assets are distributed or who looks after your children if you die, whilst they are young.

Many of our clients remark on how easy we make the process of making or updating a will, and all are pleased and so relieved that they have fi nally done it.

So, get around to it today and call us for a free initial consultation on (01778) 382723

by Rex Needle| A little bit of History

The road has always been the main north-south route through South Lincolnshire but in past times managed to retain a quiet and unhurried air until the arrival of motorised transport when it became busy with an increasing flow of passing traffic as the main A15 trunk road although the volume of vehicles that rumbled past during the late 20th century was drastically reduced by the 1½-mile bypass built by Lincolnshire County Council at a cost of £8 million and opened in July 1998.

Church Street has since recaptured much of its old world charm, typified by a former saddlery at No 29 dating back to the late 16th century, a quaint, low cottage with mullioned windows more recently known as the Old Curiosity Shop and believed to be the oldest property in the neighbourhood after the church and the adjoining rectory. The name, perpetuated by Charles Dickens in his novel of 1840, was introduced by a local antique dealer who traded from the premises during the last century, one of three antique shops in Church Street which once attracted collectors and dealers from London, the Continent and beyond but is now a private residence.

The street contains two of the town’s remaining public houses although a century ago there were nine. The White Horse is still open, as is the Black Horse further up the street although this hostelry which dates from the 18th century has since been renamed the Vine. Both public houses are Grade II listed, as indeed are many other of the buildings in Church Street including several elegant Georgian houses, a row of almshouses from 1877, and, of particular interest, the old school buildings on the west side which date from the early 19th century, built of limestone with ashlar quoins and Collyweston slate roofs. These buildings at No 60, 62 and 64, date from 1819-21 and stone panels record their provenance but the properties were restored by South Kesteven District Council in 1972 and so continue in useful occupation as private homes.

Despite many changes, Church Street gives us a glimpse of England as it once was and is just the place for a quiet Sunday afternoon walk.

If there is one thoroughfare in Market Deeping that typifies England’s traditional small market towns then that is Church Street, a wide thoroughfare with grass verges and a mix of historic stone houses and shops on either side, all dominated by the battlemented tower of an ancient church.

One thing many of us more experienced computer users take for granted is the use of a mouse and its associated buttons and wheel. However, I often teach complete beginners how to use a computer, usually elderly clients, who often have hand or wrist mobility limitations and it can be extremely difficult for them to manipulate their system using the standard mouse actions.

Two areas that are of significant impact are the double click to open programs and the tracking of the mouse pointer around the screen, especially if the movement is very sensitive. Fortunately, these settings can be adjusted.

Click in your search bar and type ‘mouse’ and you should see the option to change your mouse settings. If not then you can also find this in your control panel settings.

In the settings I would highly recommend focussing on the Double Click speed, which controls the length of time you have to double click an icon to open a program, and the Pointer Speed which is located on the Pointer Options tab.

Here you will also find a number of other tweaks and settings related to using the mouse;

switching the buttons (for lefties), adjusting the scroll speed of the wheel, turning on shadows and ‘trails’ so that it is easier to follow the pointer as it moves and even selecting themes to change how the pointer looks.

If you find mouse control tricky, or you have a family member that struggles with it, then it is worth spending fifteen minutes or so in these settings, changing the options until they match the skills and dexterity of the user.

As with most things, practice makes perfect. To help develop mouse skills SeniorNet.org have uploaded a set of simple online exercises that allow you to practise mouse control. You can find these at the following link http://bit.ly/1SHN8wd or on the web site http://seniornet.org/

In some cases, especially as we get more senior in years, our hands can suffer stiffness and arthritis. Some of my customers find it very difficult to use a mouse so instead I have introduced them to a trackball (see image).

The trackball works in a similar manner to a mouse but, instead of having to move the unit around a flat surface, you can control mouse movement by using your fingers or palm of your hand to roll the ball around, moving the mouse pointer on the screen accordingly. This can be a great help to those with hand mobility issues. Trackballs start at around £20 and upwards but there is no real need to pay more than £40 unless you need a high precision version.

| Spotlight on Schools

Welcome to this article on our school. I am the head teacher, Ian Wilkinson, and our school is a true community school – not only providing a venue for many local clubs and societies through after-school lettings, but also supporting and embracing local events and organisations. We have seven classes, one for each of the primary year groups. Children start off their schooling in our fantastic Reception Class environment, which has about as much outdoor provision as indoors, and it is set up to stimulate and excite the children who are learning there. They will then move up through Key Stage 1 and then Key Stage 2, leaving us at the end of Year 6, as hopefully happy, confident children who are ready for the challenges of their next phase of schooling. We pride ourselves at the school, with not only providing the children with a great platform in the core areas of reading, writing and maths, but with a wealth of confidence-building and exciting opportunities in other subjects.

For example, we have a proud musical history; well over half of our children have individual musical lessons, from drumming and guitars to flute and vocal lessons. They are regularly put into groups to perform, and we have an active school band. Our choir performs at Young Voices Sheffield in a mass choir event each year and our musicians perform in a wide number of events in the local community.

We have drama groups from Year 1 to Year 6 who perform every year at The Peterborough Drama Festival. This year, our children won all of the Choral Speaking classes. We are very proud of them, and they came away from the event buzzing with confidence.

We participate in a wide range of sporting activities in the local area. In the last two years, our cricketers and rounders players

have won their local tournaments, and our swimmers have also had a great deal of success.

Our vision statement is “Inspire to learn: Achieve together”, which was born out of consultation with staff, children, parents and governors.

We are very proud of what the children achieve at Deeping St James Community Primary School and thankful for all the great support that we receive from our parents.

If you would like to come and visit our school, it would be a pleasure to show you around.

Unfortunately, there has also been an increase in the number of dog attacks on sheep in recent years. This has terrible consequences for both the sheep and, possibly, the dogs and owners. I had first-hand experience of this several years ago. I was called out by the RSPCA to a long, thin field, along the edge of the River Glen near Spalding. When I entered the field, I could see a group of sheep huddled together right at one end. As I began to walk along the field, I could see bodies of sheep littered around the field. There were also many bodies floating in the river where sheep had jumped in to escape, but had drowned due to their heavy fleeces. The injuries were severe. Some of these poor creatures were still alive and had to be put to sleep. One I particularly remember was a lamb with half its face missing. As I came to the far end of the field, I found two dogs laying, resting on the ground. They were pleased to see me and happily

For more information, please contact the surgery on 01778 422863.

Lambing time is now coming to an end .It is lovely to see them in the fields around us. It’s always an uplifting sight and part of the joy of spring.

allowed me to attach them to a lead. As far as they were concerned, they had had a great time. It is not the dog’s fault when these situations occur. We must always remember that there is a bit of wolf in all our dogs. It should come as no surprise that most of our much-loved and friendly pets would chase sheep and even attack them, if given the chance. It goes without saying that dogs must be kept under control near sheep. However, many of these attacks are carried out by dogs that have escaped from their gardens, while their owners are out. It is very important that your dogs must be kept in a secure environment. Farmers are allowed to shoot dogs who are worrying sheep. Also, if a dog is seen attacking sheep, the owner will be eligible for a fine of up to £2,000, and the dog will be taken away and put to sleep.THIS IS NOT THE DOG’S FAULT. The dog is only following an instinct. Many people do not believe that their dogs are capable of such a thing, but many of them are. It is up to us, as owners, to take care and protect our pets from these situations. It does not just apply to sheep. Over the years, I have seen distraught owners when their much-loved dog has attacked chickens or pet rabbits or killed a muntjac deer, while running in the woods. We have also heard of those horrible cases where babies are attacked. All these things are our responsibility and we must understand “the wolf that lives with us”.

Founded in 1972 by the late Mr and Mrs Harriman of Market Deeping, The Deepings Flower Club has gone from strength to strength over the years.

The first ever meeting was held at the Green School in Market Deeping on October 31st 1972, when seventy-two ladies enjoyed a flower arranging demonstration by Mrs D. Kerfoot of Edwinstowe. This resulted in sixty-two eager ladies enrolling. A committee was quickly formed, with the first Chairman being Mrs K Frost, along with thirteen other committee members. They were to be known as The Deepings Flower Club and the annual subscription was set at £1.00, with meetings held on the third Tuesday of each month. Mr. Harriman agreed to be President and Mrs Harriman the Vice-President.

The club soon flourished, becoming affiliated to the East of England Area of NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies), and therefore also a member of the King’s Lynn Group of Flower Arrangers. This enabled the club to use NAFAS qualified judges, demonstrators, speakers and teachers, giving keen members the opportunity to attend various events as well.

Many members became eager and successful competitors and, over the years, have represented not only the club, but the area at Chelsea, Harrogate and Malvern Shows, including the NAFAS National Show. Four members were

even invited to stage a very large exhibit on behalf of the area at the “Gardeners’ World Live Show” at Wembley, coming away with a prestigious Gold Medal!

For many years, the flower arranging competitions at the Deeping Show were also organised by the club, until it was decided to run its own very successful Club Show. Less competitive members have the opportunity to help at various local Church Flower Festivals including Ely, Lincoln and Peterborough Cathedrals.

Today, nearly forty-four years later, The Deepings Flower Club is still blossoming. Meetings are held at the Deeping St James Priory Church Hall, on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. Looking ahead, on November 22nd, there is an Open Evening at the Deepings School, which proves to be a wonderful start to the festive season. Club nights are open to visitors (just £6) and present members would be delighted to welcome you for ‘Flowers, Fun and Friendship’. Who knows, maybe you could be a lucky winner of a flower arrangement?

Of many highly successful charity fundraising projects run by Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices in the last five years, Sing for Life 2014 was one of the very best, involving over 100 local women, raising many thousands of pounds for Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice Appeal, and featuring on ITV Anglia news to boot! It’s Sing for Life time again, and the project will once more be supporting Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Having opened a fantastic new state-of-the-art facility last July at a cost of £6m, the hospice needs to raise a staggering £7,500 a day just to cover running costs, providing incredible care for patients and their families.Launching in June, Sing for Life 2016 will engage 40 local women in a 12-week pop-up project which will see them perform live on stage in a charity fundraising concert at Peterborough’s much-loved Broadway Theatre in September. Absolutely no previous experience is needed, just a willingness to come along and get stuck in! Will Prideaux – Director of Sing for Life - says “singing is such a life-affirming activity, and to come together for such a fantastic cause creates a real buzz. It doesn’t matter if your previous singing experience has only been in the bath, come along and have a go! We’ve got a fantastic team of professional vocal coaches and mentors who will have you feeling confident in no time!”Jo Marriott, Senior Hospice Fundraiser at Thorpe Hall says “We’re absolutely thrilled that Sing for Life will be supporting us once again. This is a wonderful initiative to encourage people to try something new – members of Thorpe Hall staff have been involved in the past and they have enthused about the whole experience and the confidence it has given them. We look forward

to following the progress of the project and to working together to fundraise for Thorpe Hall.”In previous years the project has been inundated with singers, many of whom have gone on to join Peterborough Voices and never looked back! Since 2011 the women have performed with musical greats including Blake, Bernie Nolan, Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Black Dyke Band, the King’s Singers, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Band of the RAF Regiment , not to mention touring to Italy, where they sang mass in Siena Cathedral, and – in October – to Barcelona to compete in the Canta al Mar International Choral Competition. There’s never a dull moment!Jo Cheung – who joined Sing for Life in 2012 - reminisces “after singing a few scales I was informed I should go and join the Soprano 1 section. I had no idea what a Soprano was, but it didn’t matter, because from that point on, I was part of something amazing! Without doubt my most memorable moment came last year when I was given the unbelievable opportunity to sing a duet in front of an audience of over 1,000 people with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. If someone had told me four years ago I’d be doing that I’d think they were nuts!”“I’ve made some great friends doing something I love and that I still find exhilarating, challenging, hard work and utterly rewarding…long may it continue!”So go on, give it a go, who knows where your journey will lead!

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

Tom Ingram is the owner of BIG TOM Driving School who provide Five Day Intensive Driving Courses in Bourne, Grantham, Lincoln, Peterborough,

Stamford, Spalding and Boston (0800 689 4174)

Welcome to the motoring section, and what a welcome change this beautiful sunshine provides! It certainly makes driving around Bourne and Deeping so much more enjoyable.

It has recently been announced that Halfords have given notice to the DVSA that they do not want any more driving tests to be undertaken in their stores from July 2016. For those who were

not aware, Halfords had agreed to allow driving tests to be undertaken at a select few sites, on a trial basis initially, and as this had evolved to a two year period, I was rather hoping that it would be extended so that learner drivers in Stamford and Spalding could take local driving tests in the near future. Unfortunately, it appears there was not enough commercial value to the store for allowing driving tests to take place in five of their stores across the UK.

The DVSA, in response, have stated that “alternative arrangements” will be made. Time will tell if those arrangements are intended only for the five locations or not. As it stands, learners in Bourne, Spalding, Stamford and nearby villages have a thirty minute journey to their nearest driving test centres.

What’s your view on this? Do you think that the DVSA should be providing options to allow learner drivers to take driving tests nearer to their home than at the end of a thirty minute journey? I would be keen to hear your views, so please e-mail me on [email protected]

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Drones and How to Stay Within the LawUnmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as drones, are rapidly increasing in popularity and capability. Along with that has come an increase in reports of drones flying dangerously, or in contravention of air-safety legislation. This may be due in part to those who fly drones not being aware of the law surrounding their use and, while this is not an excuse, I thought it would be useful to dedicate this month’s column to raise public awareness of using them safely and legally.

The ownership and use of a UAV is not illegal in itself. However, if used in the wrong environment, they could be illegal and they can be used to commit more ‘traditional’ offences such as assault, damage, harassment or voyeurism.
