ummertime and the livin’ is easy Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high”, and so begins George Gershwin’s 1935, classic aria for his opera, “Porgy and Bess”. Thirty- five years later and Mungo Jerry are at Number 1 in the charts, with their singalong,

“We’re always happyLife’s for livin’ yeah, that’s our

philosophy”.Yes, summer is here at last, holidays are on the horizon, and I hope that you’re all finding “livin’ easy” and agreeing that indeed, “life’s for livin’”. As far as our own (not so) little market town is concerned, this last month has seen so many people putting in enormous efforts to enable some summertime “livin’” to occur in the town. The Bourne Festival, for instance, proved its usual mixture of fun and more fun, with no small measure of mud this year, but as ever, raising thousands of pounds from the smiling public for good causes – fantastic efforts all round! The International Food Festival and Street Market will soon be upon us and is promising to be a roaring success. Similarly, the ninth annual Classic Car and Bike Show on the Wellhead is expecting its traditional huge turnout, this year to drool over a showcase display of Ford Mustangs, amongst the hundreds of other gleaming beauties. This month’s magazine will put you in the know as to what July has in store locally, and much more besides: The “Club Spotlight” shines on Bourne Cricket Club, eagerly anticipating their Annual Cricket Week and the Hodgkinson Cup 6-a-side run feast. More genteel, perhaps, would be a family visit to the John Clare Festival at Helpston, in this the 150th anniversary year of the great poet’s death.Read about (and why not sponsor?) four ambitious chaps, planning to cycle the length of the country to raise funds for Bourne’s Willoughby School. There’s so much happening in the magazine this month - with competitions, business profiles and features on emerging companies, valuable advice on holidaying with small children, home improvements, crime awareness gems with “Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”, an extension to the popular “Why weight?” weight loss challenge, historical insights into the Bourne of yesteryear and much, much more. Let’s hope that this warm, dry spell continues, so that we can all go alfresco and sing along to the Gershwin classic or Mungo Jerry’s, “In the Summertime”, whilst the barbecue sizzles! Thank you for all the good wishes and positive feedback coming through from yourselves so far. Please get in touch at [email protected] if you have any ideas, suggestions, stories etc. for future editions.

ClayBourne’s Breathing New Life into

an Existing Business n less than three months, an ambitious young couple have taken their first tentative steps on a foray into the world of self-employment and are already turning heads. Business partners, Steve Dobney and Tess Frost have established Claybourne’s on the former premises of Bourne Tile Centre, close to Screwfix, in Cherry Holt Square, Bourne. “A baptism of fire”, Tess admits, “but we’re seeing a terrific response already”, with Claybourne’s friendly and helpful ethos complimenting their family-run and independent status. Steve brings a wealth of knowledge of all aspects of the building trade, gained from his highly successful experience with Dobney Developments and F.S.F. (Flow Screed Floors) of Spalding. Tess, meanwhile, is proud of her roots within the retail and financial sector, and what she may lack at the moment in her specific experience of the bathroom and tiling world, she more than compensates with a clarity of vision, enormous drive and a desire to ensure “integrity remains at the forefront of everything Claybourne’s strive to do.” This is, indeed, a “marrying together” of Steve’s “hands-on”, technical expertise with Tess’s retail experience of the crucial, “face-to face” interaction with the customer - Yes, a marriage on two levels, with the distinct possibility of wedding-bells in the near future! Claybourne’s can provide not just tiles for floors and walls, in ceramic, porcelain and natural stone, but are displaying, on two levels at their Bourne

showroom, a wide range of bathroom suites and accessories. The future is likely to include extending further into the provision of kitchen suites. “High quality and affordable” best describes the varied collection of tiles, with coverage offered from as little as £10 per square metre. At the same

time, there are exclusive designs from exclusive suppliers. The bathroom suites, shower enclosures and extraction systems are classy – step forward Crosswater, Bauhaus, Simpsons, Roca/Laufen and Aqualisa - to name just a few. They are complemented by a wide range of fitted, free-standing and modular bathroom furniture, and the accessories and brassware you would expect from an enthusiastic, new store, keen to impress. Pay Steve and Tess a visit for quality goods, a friendly service and exclusive designs, all under one harmonious roof.

How to make a large room feel comfortable

T

|Home & garden by Yasmin Chopin, local Interior Designer

There are many ways to make a large space more comfortable and one is to install a room divider. The clever use of a physical barrier can set the tone for the design scheme; traditional, mid-century modern, urban, Scandi-style or shabby chic … anything is possible. Very large rooms can make people feel uncomfortable and sometimes it’s difficult to arrange furniture due to the lack of walls. It feels a bit weird placing furniture in the middle of an expansive room when, having been used to smaller spaces, we would naturally place large items around the edges of a room and face them inwards. Moving from a house with several small rooms into one with an open plan arrangement can be daunting and space dividers have an important role to play.

In order to decide what type of room divider you need, consider the following questions:-

• Is it going to be permanent or do you need to move it around? For instance, will you want to take it with you to a new home or use it in another room

in the future?

• Do you require the screen for privacy and if so, must it be completely solid or can it be semi- transparent?

• Should the screen be more than just a visual divider? Could it be a thermal or noise barrier?

• Is the screen required for safety reasons?

• Has the screen the potential to provide storage or become a place for you to display books or pieces of art?

I hope my tips have inspired you. Give me a call when you are planning your next home improvement project; by sharing my experience and flair for design I can help you make your home a joy to live in. Dear readers, I recently attended The Bourne and District Neighbourhood Watch meeting and, as always, I find these events very useful, informative and a great forum for finding out what is going on in your local community. There are many benefits of being part of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, as they are one of the largest and most successful crime prevention initiatives. It is a method of developing close liaison between households in a neighbourhood, the local police and the local authority. The aim is to help people protect themselves and their properties, to reduce the fear of crime and improve their local environment by:

• Improved home security• Greater vigilance• Fostering a community spirit

It has been proven that areas that operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by rogue traders and distraction burglars. There are many advantages to be gained from being part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, including a sense of greater contentment and security amongst participants and a feeling of being involved in the community - bringing back the community spirit and giving you peace of mind.

The Bourne and District Neighbourhood Watch covers a large area of South Lincolnshire, including the Deepings, Billingborough and Witham-on-the-Hill. Anyone wishing to know more, or who may wish to consider starting a group, should contact the chairman, Deputy Mayor Cllr Philip Knowles on 01778 425438 or e-mail [email protected]

|Recipe of the month |Home & garden by Stringers Home Decorating Centre

Top tips for your garden this monthOn these long, warm summer evenings there is nothing better than relaxing outside, admiring the garden. It’s hugely important to focus some time and effort into making your outside space welcoming and a pleasure to be in. So, when you’re planting your summer display, why not brighten the pots with some wonderfully bright, summer colours? Cuprinol offer a huge range of “Garden Shades” to choose from that will add inspiration and joy. Simply adding a splash of colour to your planters will add interest and depth to your space. Turn the shed into a display in itself and see how this makes such a difference to your garden.

A garden table and chairs can be transformed - try painting your table in one colour and each chair in a different one. If painting the furniture doesn’t appeal, then what about investing in some new chairs? We now have in stock Arondeck chairs that are not only appealing but are stackable too, so they can be stored easily when the seasons change. We also stock chimineas and firebowls that are perfect for extending the evenings when the sun has set, and these will create a real feature in your garden. Your garden is often a forgotten room but, with just a little effort and a splash of flair, it can be the main hub of the home during the summer season. So come to Stringers Home Decorating Centre, grab some supplies and get the barbecue out. Enjoy the summer!

|Council news

Over the last few weeks the Len Pick Trust has become actively involved with Bourne in Bloom to help improve the environment; this is having a very positive effect on the town centre. The Town Council’s hanging baskets which are being offered to traders at £5 have been heavily subsidised by the Len Pick Trust. The shrub bed outside the former public toilets on South Street is receiving a huge face lift with the whole site being tidied up; again thanks to the Len Pick Trust and some volunteers. Volunteers cleared the site completely to provide a blank canvas for Debbie Cooke from Kirkby Underwood, owner of ‘Creative Garden Design’ (www.creativegardendesign.co.uk). Debbie Cooke and her colleague Sarah Horne were awarded a Silver Medal with their garden in the Great Pavilion at this year’s Chelsea Flower show. Len Pick Trust has teamed up with Debbie Cooke and the Bourne in Bloom committee to create something special for Bourne. The design is visually attractive and will be low maintenance but also catering for pockets of annual floral displays allowing for variations in each year’s display. The owner of the site, South Kesteven District Council, fully supports the project. Driving in or out of Bourne you may have noticed the new large planters at the 4 entrances of the town – these have been sponsored by Carlsberg UK, Bourne Prepare Produce, Larkfleet Group, Warners Midlands plc and the one under the Town Hall by Delaine Buses.

The Bourne in Bloom committee is very grateful for the support by all of the above and would like to thank them for their help and sponsorship for all of these Bourne in Bloom initiatives. On a final note we shall be looking for help with litter picking on Monday 7 July 2014 in the evening or if that date/time does not suit the council is able to lend litter picking equipment for individuals to carry this out over the weekend or any other time. Please contact Nelly Jacobs on 01778 426123 or [email protected] above: Planter at Spalding Road entrance to the town. Pictured below: Design for South Street site. Automated GatesInvesting in gate automation for your home or business is a big de-cision and one that you need to get right, so here are some of the benefits to help you make up your mind;

SecurityAutomating your gates will bring another level of security to your home or business. The motor that would be installed makes it very difficult for an unwanted guest to force them open. In addition to this, a “maglock” can be added which gives it extra force, making it even harder to open. When choosing your gate automation provider, remember there are other add-on products, such as an intercom, camera entry system and CCTV that can be installed in conjunction with your gate to give you peace of mind.ConvenienceAnyone who has manual gates will know that every time they enter or leave the property they will have to get out of the car to open and shut them. Gate automation will take all of this away plus, with the added benefit of the remote

controls provided, this means that the gate can be opened or closed upon demand.StyleThere is no doubt that automated gates look beautiful and add extra kerb appeal to any home or business. Hopefully, they will, in turn, increase the value of your property. What does it cost?Depending on the size of your gate and the package you choose, to automate an existing gate typically starts at around £2,000 plus VAT.Don’t forget..To choose a contractor who knows the latest gate safety regulations.

“The Great Ride 4 Willoughby”

Land’s End to John O’Groats in September

Long-distance, fund-raising cycle rides can be a pain in the proverbial – in more ways than just the obvious! From one who has raised money for the British Heart Foundation in the past, take my word for it! However, when the reason for putting yourself and three friends through an ordeal such as Land’s End to John O’Groats is your own autistic son’s improved chances at a local special school, then the pain becomes bearable and the glow of satisfaction upon completion almost tangible. Bourne man, Simon Allen, whose son has autism and attends the town’s highly regarded Willoughby School, is being joined by friends Adam Riddington, Wayne Reedman and Steve George in their challenge over two weeks in early September. All four share an avid desire to enable the school’s special facilities to be much further enhanced by their own, muscle-pumping efforts. Willoughby School caters for pupils from 2 to 19 years of age with a wide variety of additional needs, and the cyclists’ monumental efforts will be directed towards raising money for a new portable, sensory projector, along with wheelchair-accessible swings and roundabouts. Follow this fantastic challenge to see their progress and how to make your contribution at www.thegreatride4willoughby.com

THE SSAFA PROUD TO BE THERE TO HELPAs we near the commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War in early August, I would like to give some indication of the part played by the “SSFA” as it was then known, (Soldiers & Sailors Family Association - of course, the RAF had not yet been established). It was the only services charity involved in helping servicemen and their families at that time and, by 1914, SSAFA was already a well-respected organisation. When

Review of Bourne Footlights Production‘No Dinner for Sinners’ – June 4th, 5th, 6th 2014

What does a bachelor do when his Bible-quoting American boss is coming to dinner expecting him to be wholesomely married? He tries to persuade his long-time partner to be his wife just for the evening. When she storms out, he turns in desperation to his secretary and his cleaning lady. That is how his ‘char’, Edna Chapman, becomes the first Mrs Jim Watt. The ensuing mayhem made for a high-speed, hilarious and thoroughly entertaining evening.

Congratulations to the cast of six for their professionalism and mastery of comic timing – Ian Gibbs as Jim Watt; Karen MacQuarrie as partner, Helen; Katherine Marsden as secretary, Terri; John Megson and Frances Bridgewater, both with polished American accents, as Mr & Mrs McGregor and to Merryn Woodland as obliging Edna. She served up a stand-out tour de force as dowdy gossip turned ‘punk’, while her final appearance took the breath away.

The stylish and sturdy set by Paul Atkinson and Stuart Lock survived the chaos remarkably well.

Congratulations to director, Maureen Berkes, and her loyal team of helpers front of house and backstage for another excellent Footlights production.

Bourne Footlights welcome new members of all ages. We will be holding play readings for potential future productions at The Chapel Schoolroom, Main Road, Dyke on Monday 23rd

June at 7.30pm and Tuesday 1st July at 7.30pm. For further details please contact Chairman, Merryn Woodland, on 01778 423232.

THE SSAFA PROUD TO BE THERE TO HELPthe Government asked for assistance to ensure families didn't suffer hardship when their men were called to arms, SSAFA was quick to react. The figure of 7,000 volunteers to SSAFA quickly grew to 50,000. Men answered the call to arms … and SSAFA answered the call to support the families of these brave volunteers. SSAFA had been answering this call in all wars from its inception in 1885 and has been doing so, for all wars in which the U.K. has been involved, ever since. We, the volunteers of SSAFA in 2014, still proudly offer help and advice to all members and ex- members of Her Majesty's Forces and their dependants. To learn more, perhaps we can help you and yours. New Year, New Challenges for Isis |Community news

Since being diagnosed with Stage 2 Mouth Cancer in early January, I have had to undergo radical face and neck surgery, aggressive radiotherapy and am now embarking on a program of physiotherapy and learning to eat, drink and speak again. During the last 5 months of sheer hell where I’ve had to withdraw from the business completely, I’m thrilled to say Isis has continued to flourish and grow and I now see so many new customers it’s hard to recognise some of the doggies when I’m updating our Facebook pages. It has been extremely hard for what I can only describe as being one of the most dedicated and hardworking teams anyone could wish for, as they’ve had to pick up where I would normally have been and continue to manage an even busier business which within our newly opened Doggy Daycare Centre, now offers in-house Grooming 5 days a week and In-house Puppy

Classes/Socialisation with Jill. I needed so much support from friends and family to keep my spirits up and I received such wonderful words of support from our lovely clients too. Some of which have gone so far as to run the Race for Life, with and without their pooches for me; organized, supported and attended a fundraising evening to help highlight awareness for this awful (and relatively uncommon) form of cancer and to raise much needed funds for them and the British Red Cross Macmillan team of ladies who have been a real rock during my recovery. The fundraiser evening saw the Nags Head donate the use of The Loft for the evening with fish & chips for everyone who attended which housed over 50 guests on Friday 13th June. There were donated prizes for the auctions some reaching £200 and others even causing a bidding war to win a desired painting! It was an emotional event, not only as I couldn’t eat the fish & chips but also because we rose over £1000 on the night through the collection tins, raffle, tickets and auction – the final total is still unknown, but also because it gave me a chance to thank everyone personally who has helped me and Isis Pet Care through our toughest challenge yet!

Lambourn Flooring and Interiors Diversification and Expansion on the Way

popular carpet company in North Street, Bourne, has seen an opportunity to diversify and has recently seized upon it. Local man, Brian Blackbourn established the firm and has been successfully trading as Lambourn Carpets for many Years, having been joined in recent years by sons Matthew and Jonathan. The ambitious company has seen a need in the town and surrounding villages for not just a reputable carpet provider and fitter, but also a firm with the ‘whole package approach’ which sees ceramics tiles, rugs, blinds and wall coverings. The present premises, next to the Yang Xian Chinese restaurant, would have proved inadequate for the future display requirements that such a business would need. In response to this, a new shop has recently been re-furbished on the other side of Yang Xian and, together, the “new” venture will great customers as “Lambourn Flooring & Interiors”. Clearly, the present upturn in the national economy is being felt locally in many ways and a spokesperson for the company was able to paint a rosy picture. “Business is brisk’ she assured me “with plenty of enquiries from customers both old and new” There is a strong emphasis on the family element of this business, and the customers know that the Blackbourns are a family they can trust to give them the best advice on the huge and widening range of products available. Products to suit either home or workspace, with customer satisfaction their primary objective. All the fitters have been trained to a high standard, regularly attending courses at the FITA training school in Loughborough, where Matthew is also an instructor. They also go to training days with top manufacturers to keep up to date with new products and methods of installations. Long standing firms like Lambourn remain successful, and strong enough to diversify and expand when the need may arise, by having created a strong reputation for a quality, friendly, personal service, backed up by professional, un-bias advice and recommendation. The impressive website (www.lambourn.eu) now welcomes the prospective customer with an array of ideas and products with which to entice them. Emphasis is placed on a quality product being expertly installed, at the required time and crucially, at a price “that suits the customers budget”.

If you do have a will, make sure you review it from time to time as your personal circumstances may have changed significantly since you made it. If you die without a will, your estate will be distributed according to the law, rather than according to your wishes. Making a will is not as difficult as people sometimes think - in most instances it is a fairly straightforward and inexpensive procedure. Here are a few commonly asked questions, where the answers may not be as you would have expected:

1. I have lived with my partner for five years - will they inherit on my death? Not unless you have made a will, naming them as a beneficiary. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy apply. Unfortunately, they do not provide for co-habitees, only to those who are married or who have entered into a civil partnership. Your partner may be able to make a claim against your estate in certain circumstances.

2. I have step children and I have raised them as my own children since they were young - will they inherit when I die? They will not benefit unless you provide for them in your will. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy apply and unfortunately, they make no provision for step-children.

3. I have young children. If my husband and I die, will my

“Will” you be leaving your family happy?Making a Will is the only way you can decide what happens to your property and possessions after your death.

|Legal Corner - monthly advice from Double and Megson

parents be able to bring them up?Not necessarily. Unless you have appointed a guardian in your will, whether it be a relative or a friend, no-one will be legally entitled to take care of the children and an application would have to be made to the court. 4. If I do not make a will, does that mean that my spouse or civil partner will get everything? No, this will not necessarily happen. If you die without making a will, then the rules of intestacy have to be followed and this could mean that your spouse or civil partner does not inherit everything.

Always remember, dealing with an estate during a bereavement is a difficult task, so having a will in place, outlining your wishes, can greatly assist your loved ones. The peace of mind which you will be creating could be the greatest thing which you can leave to them.

On September 2nd this year, Golding Young Auctioneers will be celebrating 150 years of being at the forefront of the antiques and auctions market. Golding Young have continually adapted their business to achieve record prices throughout collectors’ markets as times and fashions have changed.

The Bourne Auction Rooms will be celebrating this landmark anniversary by hosting a truly special sale alongside the Grantham and Lincoln Auction Rooms.

As the newest member of the Golding Young family, the Bourne Auction Rooms are proud of the heritage that the building commands as the former home of the B.R.M. Formula 1 motor racing team. Included, in the sale are some very special items, including a selection of Raymond Mays’s property; his 1963 race diary an example of a truly unique item. Raymond Mays was the legendary owner and racing driver for E.R.A. before setting up B.R.M.

Interesting tools have always played a strong part in sales at the Bourne Auction Rooms and the Anniversary Sale will be no exception; two scarce and highly collectable Norris wood planes will attract a lot of attention.

Local art will play an integral part in the Anniversary Sale, as a splendid collection of paintings by local artist R.A. Gardner will take pride of place, alongside a fine selection of art from Belgian painters, such as Eugene Verboeckhoven and Charles Brias. Also included is a fantastic piece by the much loved British artist Louis Wain. Whilst Wain is best known for his anthropomorphised depictions of Victorian cats, the piece included in the Anniversary Sale is a less common composition of the canine variety. goldingyoung.com

There is a good selection of fine ceramics, spanning the most creative period of William and Walter Moorcroft. A lot worth noting is an early James McIntyre bowl decorated by William Moorcroft; shortly after the production of this item, William formed his own company distributing his wares through such institutions as Liberty & Co and Tiffany.

|Police patrol by Bourne’s Sergeant 503 Rick Mosley

“Sergeant Mosley’s Musings”As this is my first attempt at a magazine column, I have been sitting here with many ideas and struggling to decide what to write about first – there are so many issues that are important in the area. My aim is to make this an informative column, covering recent topics and advice and also to open it up to you, the reader, to make comments and ask

questions which I will endeavour to answer.

Bourne Festival 2014: The festival has now passed and, from a policing perspective, was a huge success. This year, Lincolnshire Police Licensing Department worked closely with the organisers to ensure that the event ran smoothly. Over the whole weekend only nine ‘Section 27’ notices were issued and two arrests made. Apart from the weather, it was obvious that everyone enjoyed themselves. The Section 27 notice is a very useful policing tool to reduce the threat of crime and disorder and comes from Section 27 of the “Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006”, which states that if alcohol is involved, and there is a fear that there may be crime or disorder related to that alcohol, the police can require those involved to leave a defined area for a period of time not exceeding 48 hours. Having used it many times myself, I can say that it does work, stopping a crime or disorder from happening, before it happens!

Insecurity Burglaries: As the weather improves (and I am sure it will!) many people will be in their gardens, enjoying the sun, having a barbecue or gardening. I fully understand that people will open windows to let fresh air in, but if you go outside, don’t leave yourself vulnerable to a “sneak-in- burglar”. The one thing that many forget is to make sure that the house is secure, windows are shut and doors locked. Also don’t forget to lock the side gate, shed and garage. Thieves are opportunistic and will look for a soft target. It only takes a few seconds for someone to enter your house and remove your purse/wallet, computer or car keys!

Social Media: One common complaint the police receive is allegations of threats or abuse on Facebook. Here are a few simple tips to protect yourself, before the police become involved:1) Do you actually know everyone on your friends list? Take a look through it every now and again and weed out people you don't know, or no longer speak to. Do you want to share your life with strangers?2) There is a new "acquaintance" function on Facebook where you have control over what your friends see. If you don't know them so well, mark them as an acquaintance and they'll only see what you choose.3) Did you tag yourself on that holiday? It's great to tag yourself at the interesting places you visit, but be careful about advertising the fact that you're not at home.4) Facebook allows you to make your phone number and e-mail address publicly available. If you have problems with someone on Facebook, it's easy to delete and block them, but if they have your e-mail and number too, it might not be so easy to get rid of them. Consider taking these off your profile.5) Review your privacy settings frequently. Facebook often change privacy tools and policies, which could leave you vulnerable when you thought you were secure. 6) “Tag review”. In your privacy settings is an option to review posts or photo’s you're tagged in before they appear on your timeline. That way, you have more control over what other people put on your profile. 7) Facebook has a number of safety functions. If you're receiving abuse from someone, report the offending posts to Facebook, delete the person from your friends list and block them. It is amazing how many people decide to call out the police before they've even taken these simple steps.

Ask the Police: Finally, do you have any questions you have always wanted to ask a police officer but haven’t been able to? Is there something you need advice on, or wanted to clarify? Are there any subjects you want me to write about in this column? I would be happy to receive any questions you feel you want to ask either myself or the local Neighbourhood Policing Team. To get in touch you can e-mail the team at [email protected] . Alternatively, you can reach us at facebook.com/bournenpt or at www.twitter.com/bournebboronpt . I will keep all questions anonymous.

DEEPINGS HOME MINDING SERVICE“Let us protect your castle”

“A man’s house is his castle”, we householders often say when we feel threatened in some way. The Deepings Home Minding Service can help you “raise your drawbridge”, so that you can get away, lie back and relax, knowing that your most prized asset is in their capable hands. Owner, June Green, ably supported by husband David, has extensive experience in looking after vacant properties and is committed to providing a professional and discrete service, within an area bounded by Bourne, Stamford, Werrington and the Deepings. How re-assuring must it be to know that, whilst you are away, any problems, however small, which might arise, such as a burst water pipe or an attempted burglary, will be addressed quickly and efficiently? Visits, either daily or as frequently as required, and a full security check can be arranged and carried out by a small, trustworthy, family-run team, all of whom will have been Police National Computer checked.

June has personal experience of the heartbreak of having been burgled and also returning to a burst attic water pipe. It is to allay the horrors of such events that her company is fully dedicated. A full range of other services like watering plants, feeding small, house-bound pets and putting out rubbish bins is also on offer and, as June says, “As the summer holidays approach, we look forward to welcoming new and existing customers alike to our 365 days a year service”.

SANDALLS BUTCHERSNew Products from a

High Street Favourite

Sandalls Butchers on Bourne’s West Street, (incorporating Andrew’s of Bourne and Fancourt’s Farm Shop) has been a firm favourite on the quality food scene in Bourne for generations. With almost a century of butchering history in the family, (George Andrew’s first butchers shop opened in 1918) strong traditions abound, with guaranteed full traceability of all fresh, locally-sourced meat, for example. All staff are fully trained butchers and offer a wealth of experience to their customers with advice and cooking tips at the ready. As the public’s tastes may change over time, so too must the products on offer in the shop. To that end, Sandalls now have an increasingly wide range of exciting, oven-ready, hand-made delicacies:

• “BOMBS” – a succulent, lean, meat pattie with cheese in the middle, three flavours to choose from.

• “TORNADOES” – the “melt on top” cheese burger. Are you up to the XXX Hot Chilli Tornado? (This is a pattie of lean minced beef and Jalapeno peppers, rolled in red chilli flakes with spicy Chimmichurri sauce and topped with a disc of delicious Dambuster mature Cheddar cheese).

• New STIR-FRY BEEF STROGANOFF, to join the ever popular range of other stir-fries, Thai Beef, Cantonese Beef and Mediterranean Chicken.

• English CHICKEN FILLETS and local PORK STEAKS with a variety of sauces and toppings.

Serves 4• 1kg Rack of PorkSpice Mix:• 1 teaspoon fennel seeds• 1 teaspoon caraway seeds

By Barry Coles from King Street Butchery Waterside Garden Centre

• 1 teaspoon hot paprika• 1 teaspoon salt• ½ teaspoon black pepper

Recipe of the month------------------------------------------------

1 Pound all of the spices together with a pestle & mortar until the seeds are lightly crushed. Set aside.

2 Remove the pork from the fridge. Rub the spice mix all over the skin and meat at either end of the rack. Cover and set aside for 1 hour.

3 Preheat the barbeque to a high heat and cover with the lid to create an oven. Sit the pork on a rack and sit the rack over a deep baking tray. Half fill the tray with water and sit on the barbeque. Cover with the lid and cook for 30mins until the skin is just starting to crisp up around the edges. Turn the heat down to low/medium heat and cook for 1 ½ hours. You may have to rotate the pork around the barbeque as some sides may cook quicker than others. The pork should start to look dark golden all over and the skin should start to crisp up around the edges. Turn the heat up to high and cook for 5-10 minutes longer.

4 Remove and lightly cover with foil for 30minutes before carving.

HOLIDAYS WITH LITTLE PEOPLEValuable Advice from the Antenatal Educator, Claire Chambers

I am fortunate enough to now work with the NCT and run my own private antenatal classes. It is a real privilege to have worked with so many won-derful parents at such a special time in their lives and I can’t think of a better profession.

Travelling with babies and little onesAs our thoughts turn to relaxing holidays at this time of the year, it reminded me there was once a time when jumping onto a plane to go on holi-day was something to which I gave little thought. Now, “jumping onto” anything with five children seems a crazy idea! However, it doesn’t need to be as daunting as it may seem, and, with a little planning, you can make these trips more fun for everyone. • Before booking your holiday, find out about the area and what’s going on at that time of year. The locals may love the 24 hour carnival but your tired toddler may not! • Think about ease of travelling. How far is the accommodation from the airport, for instance, and is it better to take a taxi rather than the coach with the holiday company? • Remember to check with your airline what you can take in hand luggage, (there are many companies that do not allow formula milk) and don’t forget to check what medication you need, as allergies, first aid and prescription medication will often need supporting paper work.

After several years of working abroad, I returned to England to start a family and soon realised the importance of the role of a parent. Our decisions, actions and reactions shape and influence our children so much. After attending an NCT (National Childbirth Trust) antenatal course for my fourth pregnancy, I discovered there was so much I didn’t know, so many things I had never been told. I knew I just had to find out more, so decided to go to university to train as an antenatal educator. Whilst in training, I gave birth to my fifth baby, so I got to put into practice all I had been learning!

• Make sure you speak directly with your ac-commodation provider, double checking that they do have that cot/highchair to hire etc. You may also find they can offer items such as baby moni-tors, sterilisers and other baby equipment. • There are many companies that will deliver baby foods and equipment when abroad, which, although more expensive, may reduce your lug-gage. • For families with children with special needs www.disabledfriends.com offer great advice and tips. • If you are pregnant and planning to travel, check your holiday company policies. Some have restrictions if you are in your third trimester. Remember, your skin can often become more sensitive when you are pregnant, so don’t skimp with the sun cream and also limit the time you spend in the peak heat of the day. www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/travel-pregnant.aspx have some useful information on your health and travel.

A final note: Slow things down! Children and babies go at their own sweet pace, so try to be realistic about what you can fit into your daily schedule, thinking about regular feed-ing/nappy/toilet breaks. The less you feel you have to fit in, the more pleasant and stress-free the holiday.

Starting onThursday 3rd July 2014at The Centre, Elsea Park, Bourne.

Come and join the next “Why Weight 7lb Weight Loss Challenge”

Your health |

We have just reached the end of our June “7lb Weight Loss Challenge”, where we had over 30 ladies and gents committing to losing at least 7lbs throughout the month of June. As a group, we lost over 17 stone of FAT in just 28 days … that’s 238 packs of lard!!! Clients lost weight with us in two ways - Some used one of our meal replacement programmes, combined with our supportive groups, whilst others chose to lose weight eating conventional food and attending our groups and weigh-ins for support to achieve their goals. As this has been so popular and successful, we have decided to run another challenge throughout July, which will run for 4 weeks, between Thursday 3rd July and Thursday 31st July.To be part of the challenge, simply commit to coming to be weighed each week and staying to the weekly group meetings as often as you can – the more groups you attend, the more you will learn about your relationship with food and what needs to change in your life, in order to keep the weight off in the long term. The support, encouragement and motivation you will receive from us and the other group members cannot be over-stated. You are far more likely to be successful at losing and maintaining weight if you join one of our groups. How do I sign up?It’s easy to get started. Either email us [email protected] or call/text either of our friendly Mentors, Hayley 07961 001616 or Freya 07872 665421. We can discuss your options and agree on a plan that best suits you. We will invite you to come to The Centre, Elsea Park, Bourne on Thursday 3rd July to get started. How much does it cost?It will depend on how you chose to lose your weight. Our meal replacement programmes range from £46.20 per week for our full programme, to £13.20 for our 5:2 fasting programme. Our weekly group fee is £10 on all programmes and our clients tell us it's the best investment in themselves they have ever made!

Do I have to use your programmes? At Why Weight we support all healthy weight loss programmes. However, we know how effective meal replacements are to aid weight loss and we can discuss with you the best options for you – there's no pressure on you to use meal replacement as we will work with you to help you lose and maintain your weight in the way that's right for you.

Can I invite a friend along?Absolutely! We encourage you to bring friends along to the challenge. Sharing a journey is always much more fun than going it alone!

What support will I get?You will get on-going support from your Why Weight Mentors, which will include private, “one to one” time at your weekly weigh-in, support (either by phone, text or e-mail during the week) and we have a very active private Facebook group that our existing clients are finding very motivational and supportive.

I have more questions, how do I get them answered?

The Why Weight Mentors are here to answer any of your questions, so e-mail us on

[email protected] or call/text Hayley 07961 001616 or Freya 07872 665421.

As with most things, the amount of water for each person is very individual, but if your pee isn’t mostly clear, you most likely aren’t getting enough H2O. Some people suggest a litre of water a day others more. I’ve found listen to what your body needs! If you don’t care much for the taste of water, then you can add a squirt of lemon, a squeeze of lime, a few sprigs of fresh mint or a cucumber or orange slice. You can even be so bold as to add a few berries or watermelon. What ever gets you to drink it up. Cheers to your good health!

Top 10 Benefits of Drinking Water: Don’t Medicate, Hydrate

|Your health

1. Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue – Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps you think, focus and concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are also boosted!2. Promotes Weight Loss – Removes by-products of fat, re-duces eating intake (by filling up your tummy if consumed prior to meals), reduces hunger (hello natural appetite suppressant!), raises your metabolism and has zero calories!3. Flushes Out Toxins – Gets rid of waste through sweat and urination which reduces the risk of kidney stones and UTI’s (urinary tract infections).4. Improves Skin Complexion – Moisturizes your skin, keeps it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth. Gets rid of wrinkles. It’s the best anti-aging treatment around!5. Maintains Regularity – Aids in digestion as water is essential to digest your food and prevents constipation.6. Boosts Immune System – A water guzzler is less likely to get sick. And who wouldn’t rather feel healthy the majority of the time? Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu, cancer and other ailments like heart attacks.7. Natural Headache Remedy – Helps relieve and prevent headaches (migraines & back pains too!) which are commonly caused by dehydration.8. Prevents Cramps & Sprains - Proper hydration helps keep joints lubricated and muscles more elastic so joint pain is less likely.9. Puts You in a Good Mood – When the body is functioning at its best, you will feel great and be happy!10. Save Money! - Drink Water, Even if you choose bottled/filtered water, it’s STILL cheaper than that high sugar and fat-filled latte!

Anxiety, stress and depression

Stress and anxiety are feelings of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. People have different ways of reacting to stress, so a situation that feels stressful for one person may be motivating for someone else. Many of life’s demands can cause stress, particularly work, relationships, and money problems, a death of a family member or just not being able to cope with life’s demands. It can be defined as anything that makes you feel tense, angry, frustrated or unhappy and when you feel stressed, it can get in the way of sorting out these demands or can even affect everything we do. Stress can affect how we feel, think, behave and how our bodies work. In fact, common signs of stress include sleeping problems, sweating and loss of appetite. You may feel anxious, irritable or low in self-esteem and you may have racing thoughts and worry

constantly or go over things in your head. You may notice you lose your temper more easily, drink more or act unreasonably. You may also experience headaches, muscle tensions or pains, dizziness, panic attacks and abdominal churning. Depression is a condition characterized by feelings of apathy, misery and despair. This can involve feeling that you are not coping and that you are being left behind. Panic, anxiety, agitation, trembling, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headache, aching limbs and lethargy are all signs which Stillwaters focuses on. We find the trigger points and release the pressures and so bringing the stress, anxiety and depression levels down. We offer counselling, breathing and relaxation techniques and workshops along with Reiki to free the mind, body and to achieve great wellbeing.

Do you hurt all over? Are you extremely fatigued? Are you stiff and exhausted? Is your memory poor? Is this your Fibromyalgia story? This debilitating disorder is often accompanied by health problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), headaches, chronic fatigue, and disturbed sleep patterns. Because each person’s experience of Fibromyalgia is unique, herbal medicine can offer a personalised prescription to treat both the underlying causes of illness, as well as relieving distressing physical and emotional symptoms. Herbs to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve mood and sleep patterns are likely to be used. Anti-inflammatory herbs, such as Salix alba and Angelica archangelica, together with anti-spasmodic herbs, such as Viburnum opulus, are helpful. Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s wort) is especially helpful for neuralgic pain. However, it should not be used in conjunction with prescribed anti-depressants and, for this reason, should not be self-prescribed. Calming herbs such as Valeriana officinalis, Scutellaria lateriflora and Passiflora incarnata help to restore good sleep patterns. Fibromyalgia is not a life sentence – herbal medicine can help.

AVOID THE SCAMS

I was contacted this week from a number which didn’t register on my phone. They claimed to be from Parkinsons UK and I spoke to a rather smooth telephone operator who wanted me to set up a direct debit so that I can support their charity. Something told me that with the tone of her voice and “pushiness” that something wasn’t right and she insisted that I should give her my bank details. This is something you should never do. If you are ever wondering whether something is correct or not, try and get even the smallest piece of information from the individual and quickly do a google search. For instance, if someone has told you that you have won the Spanish Lottery, google “Spanish Lottery scams”.

What to do if you are scammed There is not enough space on this page to be able to print out all of this information, but if you look up http://www.fca.org.uk/consumers/scams/what-to-do-if-you-are-scammed on the Financial Conduct Authorities website, then that will tell you 7 steps on what to do

How to protect yourselfThe scam is likely to be linked to organised crime and we strongly advise you not to respond in any way. Remember that it is highly unlikely

you have been ‘specially chosen’ by someone living abroad. You are instead one of many people that the scammers are trying to trick. You should never give out your bank account details unless you are certain of who you are dealing with. If you have already given the fraudsters this information, tell your bank immediately.

The top 10 scams in 2014There is not enough space on this page to print all the scams and what they are, but if you wish to email me on [email protected] I will be more than happy to send you the latest scams in operation. The Rugby World Cup 2015 seems like a popular one.

John Clare, Nature Poet July Festival in Helpston

---------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------In May 2014, we saw the 150th anniversary of local poet John Clare’s death. Born in the village of Helpston, just north of Peterborough, John Clare had humble and mostly self-educated beginnings but is now seen to have been one of England’s finest poets. His words capture you and take you with him as he walks the fields, woods, heaths and hedgerows of his native countryside, and his use of language can astonish and delight:

“I love to hear the evening crows go byAnd see the starnels darken down the sky;

The bleaching stack the bustling sparrow leaves And plops with merry note beneath the eaves;”

(From “Birds at Evening”)

Clare used local words for many of the birds and native plants and animals he described; starnels are starlings. He thought of himself as a simple man, and was deeply wounded by the violent changes to his countryside as the enclosures were enforced all around the landscape.

“I dreaded walking where there was no pathAnd pressed with cautious tread the meadow swath

And always turned to look with wary eyeAnd always feared the owner coming by;Yet everything about where I had goneAppeared so beautiful I ventured on..”

(From “Trespass”)

Every year, the John Clare Society holds a literary festival in the village of Helpston, where you can find out about the man, his life and poetry, and this year, it will run from July 11th to the 13th. Clare Cottage is open to the public every week from Thursday to Sunday and it will be hosting a music evening in the festival weekend. www.clarecottage.org Bourne based, folk trio Pennyless have performed at many events celebrating the life of John Clare, appearing last May on BBC’s “Countryfile” and this year at the Cottage in Helpston, and Library and Museum in Northampton. They have written a song ‘John Clare’ which describes his life as a poet and fiddler. This appears on their second album “The Turning of my Days”.

Kingsoft Office – the free alternative to MS Office

I am often faced with customers that have very little need for MS Office at home, or indeed customers that do not want to pay a steep license fee for their limited use. You may already be aware that there are a number of low cost and free alternatives to MS Office including Kingsoft, OpenOffice and LibreOffice but which is the best?I recently tried out the three offerings mentioned above and one application came out way ahead of the other two, that best being the Kingsoft Office Suite. With a slick easy to use interface, very similar to the MS Office apps, and the ability to set it to save in Office format, plus the compatibility with both the older .doc and the newer .docx files, Kingsoft truly is ‘king’.

|Technology Corner by Taff Lovesey, Lites PC

How do I install Kingsoft? You can download the standard application free from www.kingsoftstore.co.uk. Click on Downloads then click on the Download button next to the free version (note: that there is also a professional version available) You will then be prompted to continue and accept the license Finally select the style of interface that you prefer…IMPORTANT: On completion you will be asked to select a few options.

If you have Microsoft office installed you may want to deselect the three tick boxes that will

make Kingsoft the DEFAULT application for opening the MS Office file types. If you haven’t got MS Office installed then leave the boxes ticked. In both cases I would advise leaving the ‘Save new files as .doc, .xls and .ppt’ ticked for maximum compatibility with MS Office. The install will now complete and you will see the Kingsoft icons on the desktop. Finally Kingsoft will open its Writer to display additional information. This can look confusing to the new user but don’t worry, this screen will go away after the first use.

To open a new document click on the Writer iconClick FileClick New Blank Document From here you will find the interface very similar to the Microsoft Office applications, whether you are using the Kingsoft Writer (Word), Spreadsheets (Excel) or Presentation (Powerpoint). This application is a great alternative and being free for home use it is unbeatable value.

Last month I mentioned how to improve your bunker play, this month a tip on how to improve the short chip shot. When you are just off the green, just a few yards and there is plenty of green to roll the ball to the hole. The chip shot is perfect with the loft of say a 7 or 8 iron to carry the ball onto the green and let it roll to the hole. To play effectively, grip the club slightly firmer than normal, place the ball nearer the back foot and keep the hands pressed forwards. Swing the club as if it were your putter, keeping your lower body still and just rock the shoulders back and through. The tip is to imagine that the ball has a tack sticking out of it where you are going make the strike, then as you rock the shoulders back and through, imagine knocking the tack into the ball. This will create a nice acceleration through impact and more consistent chip shots I hope you enjoy this tip to improve your game and golf lessons are available in Bourne Golf Studio to help you enjoy your golf more, call me on 01778 395992 or email darren@

The Len Pick Trust(Registered Charity No. 1106598)

Successful Conservation ProjectA local conservation project has seen Barn Owls nesting in a purpose built owl tower in a field on the outskirts of Bourne for the first time. Previously the owls had nested for the past twenty five years in an old barn owned by the Len Pick Trust which had become unsafe. Using reclaimed bricks from the barn, students from Peterborough Regional College built the four metre high tower in the middle of the field as a replacement nesting site. Earlier this week, the young barn owl chicks were ringed under licence by Bob Sheppard and Alan Ball of the Barn Owl Conservation Network. There were five healthy youngsters in the nest at the top of the tower. Bob, who designed the tower, was thrilled the owls had used it so quickly after it was built. He said this is a great result. The owl chicks are seven weeks old and will soon be flying. They will leave the area in late summer and find their own nest site. It is hoped the adults will remain and breed in the tower every year. Len Pick Trustee, John Freear said, “We had to demolish the old barn for safety reasons and knowing that it had been a home for a resident Barn Owl for many years we wanted to mitigate the loss of its home. After consultation with Bob the outline design was agreed and to widen the benefit of the scheme we suggested that Peterborough College might like to become

involved in the final design and construction to give their Building Course Students some real practical experience. The students carried out the work over last winter and spring and we are really pleased that their work has paid off. The Project has been really worthwhile as thanks to the sales of reclaimed materials and the help of local farmers & suppliers the project has been broadly cost neutral and we have also been able to form a wildlife friendly area on the site of the old barn and we hope that in a few weeks the wild flower seed that we have spread will give a patch of colour to the area and help the wildlife.” Bob Sheppard added, “During last year as a result of the hard winter and spring, the owl population in Lincolnshire has decreased by some 60% and we are really delighted that the Tower is helping to rebuild the population locally”.Pictured: Bob Sheppard entering the Tower to collect the chicks prior to ringing; The five chicks preparatory to ringing; Alan Ball ringing one of the chicks

Outstanding Westfield!Bourne Westfield Primary Academy were recently inspected by Ofsted and judged to be outstanding in every area. This was tremendous recognition only 18 months following the last inspection.

The inspectors were impressed with all aspects of the school and the tremendous progress the school has made in such a short space of time. During the inspection, the team observed teaching in all classes and were impressed, not only by the quality of teaching, but with the support that all pupils receive in order to become successful learners. The school were particularly delighted that inspectors noted in their report that pupils are extremely proud of their school “It’s awesome” said one.

Headteacher Elaine Radley commented, “The outstanding judgement was testament to the hard work of our fantastic team of children, staff and governors here at Westfield. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported us, not only during the inspection, but over the last two years.”

“I knew it would be the last time I saw him...”

By Annabel Snape, age 15

etrified, panting and panicking, my chest lurched with each excruciating stride. I had to get away. Scrutinizing my surroundings, I spotted a nearby lake glimmering desirably in the moonlight that was soon to be my blanket of safety.

I jerked forward violently as I got heaved back - a wave of dread washed across my face. “My rucksack,” I whispered in fear. I could hear the flicker of fire creeping up on me, almost cackling malevolently. I tugged and twisted, trying to tear free. I was trapped. With an explosion of fury, I ripped my intertwined rucksack away from the grabbing arms of the tree and stumbled away with haste, leaving the horror far behind me.

After a perpetual journey of identical agony, I slid my charred body delicately into the ripples of coolness. It caressed my body soothingly. I took mouthfuls of water and replenished myself. I tilted my pounding head back into the tranquil lake as memories began to flood back into my mind. The old trinket that sat perfectly on my old oak dressing table which held my silly childhood secrets; a four leaf clover; a broken skipping rope; an old button off my favourite dress and a tattered rag

bound with grime. They were all too precious to throw away, yet carried no real value.

Reminiscing on all my old memories, I heard the faint ring of Mum’s chuckle. What would she be doing right now? I hoped she wasn’t panicking, she knows I am old enough to make my own decisions. Once I had settled down somewhere new, I would contact her and let her know I was alright. The thought of going home lurked in the back of my mind constantly.

I could smell an aroma of cinnamon, as if someone was baking a tart; one that would remind you of any family gathering full of joy. It was my Mum’s own cinnamon tart. My mind was tricking me into thinking I was doing the wrong thing, poisoning my good memories into enticing me home.

I snapped out of the day dream and came to the reality that I had to persist. This is what I wanted. I inhaled deeply as the fresh morning air flowed coolly into me and tickled my nose. The sun simultaneously burst out in radiant brightness. Vibrantly the new morning light ran along my skin, bringing a new start; I ventured on into the unknown.

Each month Discovering Bourne will be showcasing stories written by talented young students from Bourne Academy.

A Weekend in Marrakech…A beguiling assault on the senses, the rose-red city of Marrakech, named after the warm pink hue of its medina walls, is an abundance of colourful souks, opulent palaces and luxuriant gardens. Magical Marrakech; one of the fascinating Imperial Cities of Morocco, Marrakech is a vibrant, colourful city where modern and traditional life are naturally united. At its heart is the ancient Medina, with its myriad of bustling alleyways, souks and of course the famous Jemma el Fna Square, where you will find snake charmers, story tellers, and the maze of stalls serving delicious, freshly cooked local food. In contrast, there is the new town where you will find sophisticated restaurants, bars and nightclubs, where fashionable locals and tourists mingle together; Marrakech offers the best of both worlds. You will also want to discover the famous souks where everything from Arab slippers to woodcarvings can be found. A highlight is the Souks des Tenturiers dyers’ market where the pavestones are splashed with a rainbow of fresh tints and a kaleidoscope of newly-coloured wools and silks billow above the market stalls. Seat of Morocco’s ruling dynasties for centuries, Marrakech’s finest monuments can easily be explored on foot including the ornate minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the remains of the 16th century Badi Palace; nicknamed ‘The Marvel’ for its Italian marble and Sudanese gold decor and the sumptuous Saadian tombs with their carved alabaster and zellige tiles details. The accommodation that I offer is dotted all over the city, with the majority being beautiful old riads hiding behind fairly mediocre doors; yet once inside, you realise you have entered an oasis of calm and can hear nothing but the sound of birdsong and a gently

trickling fountain. The perfect retreat after a long hot day discovering the ancient city and haggling in the souks for local handicrafts to take home. I also offer a handful of villas outside of the Medina which are fantastic for families looking for larger pools and more space for the kids to enjoy. After a few days exploring the bustling, hectic city of Marrakech, a stay in the High Atlas Mountains is the perfect antidote. Lush, verdant valleys, snow-capped mountain peaks; it is hard to believe that the tranquil, rural life led in the High Atlas is a mere hour from the madness of Marrakech. Here Berber life remains unchanged as it has done for many years, locals living a simple life and relying on the surrounding land to make a living. The Berbers are friendly, welcoming people and you may even find on a gentle mountain hike that you are invited inside a mud baked pise house for a glass of homemade mint tea. In the High Atlas I offer an assortment of accommodation, from more rustic retreats through to the magnificent Kasbah Tamadot, Sir Richard Branson’s idyllic mountain retreat. Morocco is ideal for couples and families looking for culture (a blend of Arab, African and European influences) souks for shopping, grand palaces, deserts and mountain villages to name a few. The country is lush and green in spring (mid-March to May) and the heat of summer eases in autumn (September to November). So ideal for some winter sun getaway. Just call me for advice and I will be happy to help you choose the perfect places to stay.

indmills first appeared in Persia in the 7th century, reaching Europe 500 years later and thereafter their use spread rapidly. By the early 19th century there were 10,000 windmills in the country, grinding grain, driving mechanical saws, raising coal, pumping water and making paper. They became a familiar part of the landscape around Bourne where they were used to drain the fens. In 1763, for instance, fifty windmills or wind engines are listed as working in the vicinity to service 30,000 acres of farmland that has since become some of the most productive in the world.

They were also essential for grinding corn and as a consequence most towns and villages had one although most have since been dismantled. One of the largest was sited to the north of Bourne at the junction of what is now Mill Drove and North Road and dating from the early 18th century although the original structure was rebuilt as a four-sailed windmill in 1832 when the old stone tower was raised to six storeys in height.

In 1843 it was advertised to let as “a tower windmill with patent sails and three pairs of stones”. It became known as Wherry’s Mill after the family which owned it and continued grinding corn until 1915 when it was struck by lightning

and badly damaged, reducing it to two storeys. The stump was later used as a storeroom by a subsequent owner, the late Tom Jones, an antique dealer, who lived at the Mill House where he utilised adjoining outbuildings to display his antiques. After his death, the remains of the mill were demolished in 1994 to make way for a new house.

The picture above shows the mill in the late 19th century and the cottage on the right was the North Road toll keeper’s house. All animals and road traffic were charged before they could pass and a billboard displayed the fees such as sixpence for a pony and trap. There is evidence that a second mill once stood on the south corner of Mill Drove because a map from the early 19th century shows this road connecting with the main Peterborough to Lincoln road, now the A15, “at a place between the windmills”.

Few windmills can be seen in the countryside today and those that do survive are usually listed buildings that are preserved as a reminder of our industrial past.

Volunteers Needed

our skills and knowledge help parents build better lives for their children. As well as the age old problems that have always confronted families such as – illness, disability, bereavement and loneliness: – we support teenage mums, single parents and those affected by poverty, abuse, and social isolation. The outcomes can often be spectacular thanks to the unique and personal way in which Home-Start works, by parent to parent support in a family’s own home.

Volunteers talk about the personal satisfaction they get from supporting other parents, and increasingly they value how the experience enables them to get a foot on the career ladder in related jobs

Home-Start South West Lincolnshire volunteers support families living in the Stamford, Bourne, and the Deepings area.

Training The next Preparation course for new volunteers begins on Thursday 11th September 2014. and for 5 consecutive Thursdays ending 22nd October. Further on going accreditation courses and training are available. Expenses are

reimbursed when you support a family.

What should I do next?Contact Home-Start South West Lincolnshire to arrange an informal interview or for more information.

Professor Lord Robert Winston:“I want to congratulate Home-Start for all its done especially in nurturing children who are our future”

Alan Titchmarsh:“Without people like you giving your time & a piece of yourself, this country would not run. You are the cogs not the oil”

Volunteers are at the heart of Home-Start South West Lincolnshire. We welcome all ages and backgrounds. You do not need specific qualifications; it is your life experience and inter-personal skills that matter. You need to be a parent or have parenting experience.

Local, top side, Bourne C.C. will be proud to host their Annual Cricket Week on the Abbey Lawn from Monday July 21st this year. Traditionally, a full, one-day game will be followed, each evening by a rather more frantic, unorthodox version of the beautiful game. A flavour of what will be in store for the spectators can be gauged when casting an eye over some of the participating 6-a side team monikers : “Happy Hookers”, “Baston Tarts” and “Jubilee Jockstraps”- get the message? The all-day games will see a Bourne XI battle against Bourne Optimists (Monday), Ketton (Tuesday), Leicester Globetrotters (Wednesday) and Ilkeston Tradesmen (Thursday). The 6-a side tournament, with the prestigious Hodgkinson Cup for the winners, (kindly sponsored by Stephen Knipe and Co. and Adrian Smith) will provide no small degree of fierce rivalry, with much pride at stake. Last year’s winners were Bourne Rugby Club, and they are likely to be challenged this time by their Rugby Club Second Team of Happy Hookers, Bourne Services’ Washday Blues,

Bourne Optimists, Old Brunnians, Baston Tarts, Motley Crew and the Jubilee Jockstraps, (or Smiths’ Smackers). New teams on the square this year include Master Batters and the erudite practitioners of Bourne Academy, as yet nameless, hopefully not aimless! The Cricket Week has always been a key event in the calendar for boosting bar profits and hopefully attracting more spectators than ever before to this delightful ground. Daily barbecues and raffles serve as further inducements – all we need now is the weather!
