So, farewell “Dry January”, and that de-tox wasn’t too bad after all, was it? … for some! This

month, we’re expecting the worst of the winter weather, if the “old wives tales” and the Met. Office are to be believed, so make sure you’re well wrapped up and everything is in place for a fabulous Valentine’s

Day. We’ve plenty of ideas, (many associated with food!) in your favourite magazine, to make it a truly memorable one, especially with it being a Leap Year! Ladies, don’t forget to seize your opportunity to make an honest man out of him, by popping the question on the 29th. Fellas … don’t say you haven’t been warned!

Welcome to our February edition...

Claire x

John

You know “it’s a rum ol’ do”, as they say on the fens, when a field is yellow over with daffodils

in late December, but that’s just what happened recently near Holbeach. There are mild winters … and then even milder ones. Now for the Arctic blasts … and everything will be as it should be! Snuggle down then, and see how we’ve certainly gone for a kaleidoscope of contributions this month. You can learn how to “Love your Body Shape”, gaze admiringly at snowdrops in beautiful gardens, and even

be inspired to have your own garden beautified with a new patio, or your bedroom made magnificent by the addition of fitted sliding wardrobe doors. And that’s not all!

Wasn’t it sad to hear about the guy who invented predictive text dying recently? The following notice advised that “his funfair was going to be held on the follicle sundial!” Finally, and hopefully not to upset Mr. Putin too much, don’t you just hate those Russian dolls? They’re so full of themselves.

Why do we have leap years?Leap years are needed to keep our modern day Gregorian calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds – to circle once around the sun. This is called a tropical year. However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn’t add a day on February 29th nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only one hundred years, our calendar would be off by approximately twenty-four days!

Which years are leap years? In the Gregorian calendar, three criteria must be taken into account to identify leap years:

❱ The year is evenly divisible by four;

❱ If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless;

❱ The year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

This means that 2000 and 2400 are leap years, while 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are NOT leap years.

leap Day Customs and traditions

Women propose to their men According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way around – every four years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.

twelve Pairs of Gloves In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day” for the same reason. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage pro-posal from a woman on Leap Day. In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman’s proposal on February 29th has to buy her twelve pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.

2016 is a leap year a leap year has 366 days, as opposed to a common year, which has only 365. nearly every four years is a leap year, and we add a leap day, an extra – or intercalary – day, on February 29th.

– what’s that al l about then?

Bourne lady in new year’s Honours listDorothy alexander, 94, from Bourne, has been awarded the British empire Medal for services to the community.

Originally from Montreal in Canada, she moved to England with her RAF husband and settled in Bourne in 1946. Looking for ways to make new friends, she joined the Women’s Institute and soon became a key figure, serving in many roles on the committee and helping with programmes such as Meals on Wheels.

Dorothy also worked with the old Bourne Youth Club that met in the Vestry Hall on North Street, and was later involved in the negotiations with Lincolnshire

County Council that led to the creation of Bourne Youth Centre on Queens Road. She was chairman of the Management Committee from 1986 to 2013.

She was also one of the founder members of Bourne Bridge Club, serving as treasurer for many years, and continues to attend regularly.

Dorothy said it was “quite a surprise” when she learned of her honour, adding: “I don’t think I

have done anything special. You just work and you hope along the way people who attend the associations you have been involved with enjoyed their time there.”

Shoe firm out to sock it to ’emBourne shoe store north shoes is out to prove it is one step ahead of the rest – by claiming more prestigious national accolades.

The North Street family firm has been shortlisted in four categories at the Footwear Industry Awards 2016.

The business, which has been trading from Bourne since 1876, and now also has shops in Stamford, Peterborough and Cambridge, is bidding to add to the three titles it has already collected since the awards were launched in 2012 – including “Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year” in 2015.

North Shoes has been shortlisted for “Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year”, “Independent Family Retailer of the Year” and “Fashion Independent Retailer of the Year”.

And James North, the fifth generation at the head of the business, is shortlisted in the “Leaders in Customer Service” category.

He said: “The awards honour the finest in the footwear retail industry and it’s great just to be shortlisted. We have been lucky in them since 2012 and I’m so

pleased and honoured that people in the trade have thought of us again.

“The shortlistings recognise we’re always looking at new things and focusing on quality service and products. The trade sees us as a business that’s progressing and doing well.”

North Shoes has won the “Men’s Independent Retailer”, “Independent Family Retailer” and “Ladies’ Independent Retailer” crowns in the past, as well as being highly-commended three times.

The 2016 winners will be announced at the glittering Footwear Industry Awards evening at the National Conference Centre in Solihull on Sunday, February 21st , hosted by Capital FM Radio drive-time host, Greg Burns.

erin White scoops £150 treasure Hunt Pot Six year old Nottingham girl, Erin White, loves visiting her grandparents in Kirkby Underwood and then coming into Bourne to her favourite spot, Paint a Pot Place on West Street. Imagine then how excited she must have been recently to discover that she had won the Treasure Hunt competition which ran alongside the Christmas Fayre festivities in the town. Proud mum, Leigh White, informs us that the £150 prize will enable Erin to have even more fun at Paint a Pot Place, next time Erin hits Bourne. Congratulations Erin, and tough luck to the huge number of you who entered this year’s competition, as well as a big thank you to all of the shops and businesses who made it all possible.

thurlby Man in Marathon Challenge for Ms-UKGlenn Martin tells his story:

I am fortunate enough to be running the London Marathon in 2016, to raise awareness and funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, “MS-UK”, who have provided fantastic support to my sister, Sarah, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, six years ago.

There are currently around 100,000 people in the UK who live with this disease, and I would love to be able to raise funds

to support this charity who I feel are committed to ensuring every individual is treated with care and dignity. The mission and values of MS-UK show that their work is essential to provide information and advice, with a professional compassion.

So far, I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received, including that from The Bourne Round Table; Kerr Page, who is the professional golfer at Gedney Hill Golf Club; and Stamford Building and Construction Ltd.

Please could you use your influence by way of publicising my challenge in your “Discovering” magazines, so that both an awareness and much-needed cash can hopefully be raised?

10 ASPARAGUSAn English herbalist from the 17th century, Nicholas Culpepper, wrote that asparagus “stirs up lust in man and woman.” It is a great source of potassium, fibre, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, thiamin and folic acid.

9 ALMONDSThroughout the centuries, almonds were regarded as fertility symbols. The aroma of almond supposedly arouses passion in females and provides high doses of vitamin E, magnesium and even fibre.

8 AVOCADOIts shape gives it away! The Aztecs called the avocado ahuacuatl, or “testicle tree”, seeing the fruit hanging in pairs on the tree as resembling testicles. Avocado is rich with folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium.

7 BANANASBy its shape, the connection with sexuality is quite obvious, but bananas are loaded with potassium, magnesium and B vitamins. It also contains chelating minerals and the bromeliad enzyme, said to enhance the male libido.

6 BASILBasil has a fantastic aroma that is said to have an aphrodisiac effect; it is also very stimulating. Using sweet basil in a pasta sauce will be sure to get your heart racing!

Valentine’s Day

- The Top 10 Aphrodisiac Foods (DO try this at home!)

SpecialThe food you consume can have a direct impact on your sex life, affecting your hormones, brain chemistry and energy and stress levels. Some foods have psychoactive properties, others arouse because they are psychologically suggestive, and some can actually increase blood flow to the genitals.

5 CHOCOLATEPure chocolate, the king of natural aphrodisiacs, contains a host of compounds including anandamide, the psyochoactive feel-good chemical, and PEA (phenylethylamine), the “love chemical,” which releases dopamine in the pleasure centres of the brain and peaks during orgasm.

4 FIGSFigs are steeped in history, being mentioned in the Bible (Adam and Eve wore fig leaves to cover their private parts), whilst the ancient Greeks held them as sacred, associating them with love and fertility.

3 GARLICVery strong smelling and perhaps a bit of a turn-off, but likely to provide added strength to the male, as the allicin in the garlic will increase levels of blood flow in vital regions!

2 OYSTERSOysters may be thought an aphrodisiac because of their high zinc content, which helps produce sperm and increases libido. Raw oysters are best served with a glass of chilled Champagne for a truly romantic meal!

1 HONEYHoney is a great source of boron, a trace mineral that helps the body use and metabolize oestrogen, the female sex hormone, and this mineral may also enhance testosterone levels in the blood, the hormone responsible for promoting sex drive and orgasm in both men and women.

For many of us, looking after ourselves will have been one of our top resolutions this year, whether it is to lose weight, become fitter, tone up our wobbly bits or to eat more healthily.

Love your Body Shape!30 minutes at a time

| Health Renu - health, fitness & beauty

Most of us realise that the “celebs” that have the bodies we desire take some sort of regular exercise and have a healthy eating regime. However, the pressures of our hectic lifestyles can make this seem like it is an impossible task.

The good news is that you do not need to take hours out of your day to reach your goals. Short duration workouts are becoming increasingly popular and deliver great results.

Did you know, if you can find thirty minutes, three times a week for just four weeks, you will see results? Fitness levels are increased, excess fat diminishes and a new and improved body shape will start to be revealed!

At Renu, we like to think we understand what it is like to be a busy woman in the modern world, which is why we have designed a workout that can be completed in just thirty minutes but one that will deliver results fast.

The best part is that you don’t have to stick to one particular type of exercise. It doesn’t matter if you choose the gym, indoor cycling, or a studio class; you simply need to stick to the rule –“thirty minutes, three times a week”. Soon, you will be sleeping better, looking better and learning to love your reflection in the mirror!

Of course, diet is just as important. Establishing healthy options is confusing at best, and can seem time consuming. That is why we like to give you easy options that fit in with feeding a family and working through your lunch break. Starting anything new and outside our comfort zone can be a daunting experience, especially a gym - How do you dress? What shoes do you wear? Am I too ‘big’? Will there be a lot of mirrors? Will people know it’s my first time? Will people judge me? - all of these are natural thoughts. However, in order to make a change, we need to take that first step, and we can help you do this in a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment.

A year ago I felt sluggish, riddled with arthritis and tired. Now, my arthritis has almost disappeared and I feel much more alive. I have also lost eight pounds and nine and a half inches.’ ‘If I were to give a tip to someone thinking of starting, I would say, “Do it. Take a risk and make connections with other like-minded

women. You will get lots of support from all the staff at Renu

Suzanne

So, call us on 01778 423923 or come in and see us.

After all, what have you got to lose… apart from inches and pounds?

When it comes to travel, it’s so important to know you are booking with someone you can trust, someone you can always rely on and someone who knows exactly what you need each and every time. In fact, a recent survey* revealed that trust is the single most important factor when booking a holiday. 93% of us in the UK plan on going on holiday this year. This survey showed that 71% of people said first-hand knowledge and reviews on destinations and hotels is more influential than online ratings. This research combined with the BBC’s feature on ‘Rip-off Britain’ shows the serious underlying issues which can arise from booking holidays online. Here, I provide a simple solution to eradicate all the potential stresses and dangers of booking a holiday, providing you with your perfect getaway.

Bourne Slimming World consultant, Jo Bradford, took over her Monday evening group at the Darby and Joan Hall in July 2015, after losing three stones, herself, with the club.

“As someone who had struggled with my weight for many years, I had tried lots of times to lose weight, but life

would always get in the way at some point, and I’d go off track. It would knock my confidence, and I’d end up feeling like a failure and like I couldn’t stick at anything.”

“When you have an unhealthy relationship with food, as I did at the time, comfort-eating can feel like the only way to make yourself feel better. I’d turn to chocolate, but afterwards I’d feel even more guilty and, before long, I’d have given up completely.”

“Since joining Slimming World, my outlook has changed completely. I now realise that I am not the only one who falls into this destructive pattern – we’re all human, and we all have our off-days. That is why the support of a group is so important as, by sharing problems and solutions with other people, you realise that you’re really not alone and you have a network of people like you who really understand and care.”

Jo’s Slimming World group has gone from strength to strength in the last six months, with members achieving fantastic weight losses. “Most people who embark on New Year diets fail within days or weeks, because they follow plans that are too restrictive and leave them feeling hungry,” says Jo. “In contrast, Slimming World’s Food Optimising programme is flexible and incredibly generous, with members able to satisfy their appetite with wholesome, healthy meals which the whole family can enjoy – think spag. bol, roast dinners, curries, stir-fries, cottage pie, chilli and many more… even home-made chips!”

Slimming World worked for Jo - It could work for You!

Jo says, “I am thrilled that my group has done so well – being able to help people to lose weight is so rewarding. I absolutely love my job, and every single member’s success is important to me. I would encourage anyone who is feeling unhappy about their weight to come along and give Slimming World a try – it could just be the decision that changes your life!”

Many of us made New Years Resolutions and some will have included eating healthily and exercising regularly. As we approach the Spring, are these resolutions a distant memory or are you needing a boost to help keep you going?

Fitness Resolutions going well? Sports massage could help you

Launching into an exercise programme without careful consideration after a period of inactivity and over-indulgence, may have resulted in the development of aches and pains owing to the shock inflicted on the body in such a short space of time. The desire to shake off those extra pounds often causes us to rush to the gym, join every class possible and work ourselves to exhaustion when our bodies least expect it, let alone able to cope. The result can often lead to injuries as our muscles and joints are put under great stresses.

If you are experiencing aches and pains, don’t ignore them, this is your body’s way of tellingyou to slow down, therefore you need to recover properly after exercise and include a thoroughcool-down

and stretching session after each workout. Alternatively, your fitness campaign may have started well, provided encouraging results helping you to feel rejuvenated, fitter and healthier. However, perhaps you have noticed your performance has peaked and you are now seeking that little bit more to satisfy your competitive edge?Either way, have you considered a Sports Massage? Sports Massage is equally important when it comes to aiding muscle recovery, treating injuries and improving performance. Through using various soft tissue stretching techniques, massage can reduce scar tissue, thereby improving the efficiency of the muscle, improve joint range ofmovement by helping to improve stride length, both resulting in less effort required to cover a greater distance. When used as part of your fitness routine, Sports Massage can play a pivotal role in preventing injury, aiding muscle recovery

post exercise, improving performance and helping to save what may otherwise have been a difficult and painful

experience in keeping that NewYear’s resolution.

Other benefits of Sports Massage include:• Promoterelaxation• Improvepostural complaints•Easepain•Assessinjuries•Complementrehabilitation ofinjuries

So, for anyone looking to get the best out of their New Year campaign to improve their well-being, Sports Massage should be considered regardless of your sporting ability. It’s time to consider your options: Continue on what could be a difficult and painful fitness campaign or prevent injury and improve future performance? Ifyouhaveanyquestionsorconcerns at all then please do contactmeatthepractice,I’dbe delighted to discuss them with you. Happy training!

| Golf tip by Darren Game

How to make a better putting stroke The best putting stroke is one that sees the shoulders, arms, hands and putter connected and moving as one unit.To help achieve this, it is best to hold the handle of the putter in the palms of the hands, as opposed to the fingers (see photo). When you achieve this hold, you will notice a gap between the little finger and the handle of the putter and also that the putter shaft and forearm form a straight line.

When you do this, the hands/wrists are locked and therefore inactive, meaning the shoulders and arms take control of the stroke. The result - a straighter path of the putter, also maintaining a square putter face to the path. This is just what is needed to hole more putts out on the golf course.

In the depths of winter, it’s heart-warming to think ahead to the summer and how the garden can be “re-claimed”, to become a vital “open-air room” once again. With a patio, the beauty, usefulness, value and ease of maintenance in this additional outdoor living space is limitless. As a natural exten-sion of the home, a patio significantly expands a family’s living and entertaining options. It provides the perfect gathering spot for guests and family, who will be drawn to “al fresco” activities.

Enter Mark Needham, therefore, and it is as a result of my own experience last year that I can whole-heartedly recommend this most helpful, meticulous and amiable local contractor. An excel-lent reputation can grow as a result of one satisfied customer desperate to show friends their new addition, and so the word got out. “New patio? Brilliant product? Reliable, trustworthy worker? Very competitive price? Give Mark a ring!” So I did and, two patios later, we now eagerly await the summer. The natural Indian sandstone pavers glisten in a variety of beautiful pastel shades and add so much to our newly transformed garden.

Mark Needham has more to offer, though, than just a properly priced, perfectly planned and propor-tioned patio! He is experienced in all aspects of hard landscaping, including walls, as well as inter-nal structural alterations, steelwork, and extensions.

Why not join the ever-increasing list of satisfied cus-tomers by expanding your living space and being able to brag about your new patio?

It has been very wet and, although it is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early peas, parsnips and garlic, only do so if the ground is

not frozen or waterlogged. Parsnips do not germinate easily, so a later sowing when the soil is warmer may help. To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add well-rotted manure or compost to the prepared soil. Shallots can be planted in shallow drills about seven inches apart so that the tips are just showing; water and keep weed-free. A large variety of seeds can be sown indoors such as broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage –to name but a few.

All of your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting” in a cool, light room. It is recommended to remove all but three of the “chits”, as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes.

The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. Another job that can be done is to spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plant-oil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects.

If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch.

Happy gardening!

As I write this, we have yet to have the usual frosts and snow that winter brings, but we do have the promise of a cold snap and possibly some snow. With this in mind, February may prove to be a pretty cold month but, who knows? The end of the winter months may still prove to be the warmest on record. More than any other month, you need to watch the local conditions and act accordingly. Don’t always do what the seed packet says; make a judgement, depending on the ground conditions as you don’t want all of your seeds to rot.

Tread carefully with “The Bank of Mum and Dad”!

Before making that gift or loan, there are several matters that need to be considered :-

If the buyer is having a mortgage to fund the purchase, most mortgage lenders prefer that the deposit money is a gift to the buyer. They usually ask for a letter from those making the gift confirming that the money does not need to be repaid.

Whether you gift or loan the money to help buy the property, then the funds will need to be brought to the mortgage company’s attention, ideally from the start of the mortgage application process.

IfthEmonEyIstobEAGIft If you were to die within seven years of making the gift, inheritance tax may need to be paid on that gift.

How would you feel if your child co-habited, their relationship came to an end and the ex-partner sought to claim an interest in the property, which your child had purchased from the monies you had gifted?

Are you happy for further loans to be secured on the property? What if your child got into financial difficulties and the property was repossessed?

IfthEmonEyIstobEAloAnHow do you want that loan protected? Do you require interest to be added to the money loaned? Is your child going to make monthly repayments? What would happen if you fell out

with your child and they refused to pay you back what had been loaned?

Do you require a Charge to be registered against the property? This means you will be repaid out of the sale proceeds if the house is ever sold? Many parents believe that no protection is required and they will make their own private family arrangement.

The problem with family arrangements is that people rarely plan for, or like to even consider the possibility of, future problems.

| Legal Corner advice from Double and Megson

With the average first time buyer needing at least £16,000 deposit, it’s not surprising that many parents and even grandparents are helping by loaning or giving money towards the purchase of a property. The combination of family members and large sums of money can sometimes be fraught with problems.

One of stamford’s most established and popular firms is to cease trading early in April. The gap created by the loss of both Lambs China, Glass and Cookware on St. Mary’s Street, and Lambs Hardware on St Peter’s Street will be enormous, bringing to a sad end almost seven decades of high quality trading. The shops have been an established landmark, and retiring partners, Richard Stapling and his sister Janet Brown, would like to thank their many customers, some of whom are now second and third generation regulars; customers, who over the years, have had wedding lists placed there and then followed up with christening, birthday and anniversary gifts, purchased from Lambs.

They are particularly sad to be saying goodbye to their team of loyal staff, some of whom have worked up to twenty-two years for Lambs, supporting and helping the shops to prosper and become such a key player on Stamford’s shopping stage.

A massive stock clearance, where everything must go, including fixtures & fittings, is now underway, with people flocking for high quality bargains, whilst the properties, owned by Janet and Richard, will soon be on the market. There can be little doubt that Lambs shops will be missed in the town, but when a business folds, new opportunities can soon appear and a new chapter can begin.

By Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com

staysafeandsay‘no’toDoorstep TradersRogue traders cause misery for thousands of people each year; most of whom are the elderly and vulnerable in our communities. These uninvited traders call at properties offering to do home maintenance work, such as roofing, tarmacing and paving, garden and tree surgery, insulation, general building work, installing burglar alarms and other services.

The work or service offered can sometimes be unnecessary, overpriced, of a poor standard or not done at all. Typically, they have no formal training to carry out the work offered and some may have links with distraction burglars.

It is important that people have the confidence to say NO to doorstep traders and take the time to think about the service being offered.

The following is advice on how people can avoid being scammed by rogue doorstep traders:

Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, DO NOT agree to on the spot house repairs, without taking advice.

Be wary of special offers or warnings that your house is unsafe.

Don’t allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out; if you ask them to leave and they don’t, contact the police on 999.

Do not make snap decisions; if you feel that any work is required on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision.

Don’t ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this!

If you have an experience with a rogue trader, please report it by telephoning 101. For live incidents, where the rogue trader is still at the property, or is due to return, contact the police on 999. The police have a protocol for dealing with these incidents and welcome your contact.

Fifteen months ago, we featured Dean Pallett’s impressive “state-of-the-art” design showroom in the village of Dyke. Limehouse Interiors Ltd. were on the cusp of a very successful trading period, with their design and installation of stylish, high quality, yet affordable kitchen solutions, and the last year has shown strong returns in this particular sector of the business. A return visit was to prove most enlightening to me, to discover Dean’s enthusiasm and clarity of ambition remaining sky-high. Fitted sliding wardrobe doors provided the focus of our discussion this time, and it was soon evident that, by Limehouse being the only supplier and installer of the particular product in our vicinity, then Dean was operating from a position of strength.

Amongst the many advantages which the Limehouse fitted sliding-door system holds over both free-standing furniture and non-fitted sliding units is the fact that every available piece of what might be a rather small room can be used for storage. The wide range of configurations which can be offered also provides the customer with

their own personalised storage solution – single or double hanging rail, shelves or drawers, LED strip lighting within the rail or off the rail, orthodox mirrors or tinted ones … the list continues, and the customer can fulfil that ambition to become their own interior designer!

Dean can call upon twenty-five years of experience in the furniture industry to discuss a customer’s ideas and then create a bespoke internal layout plan. A computer-rendered image can then ensue, and at any point the customer may change initial ideas, before the final decision arrives. A carefully detailed quotation, where the customer will know exactly what the cost will be, highlights Dean’s meticulous attention to every aspect of the process.

It is not just the bedroom which can benefit from these sliding doors though, as a number of living rooms, studies and offices have the same potential to be improved immeasurably. It is affordable luxury which Limehouse Interiors are longing to provide for you, backed up by a burgeoning reputation for quality and style.

First Impressions Count!Nine times out of ten, a buyer’s first impression is created by the selection of images that is found on “Rightmove” and “Zoopla”. No one wants to admit that, when searching for the right property online, they will be quick to disregard a property if the images are poor. Whether that is a poor quality image or, in fact, just a cluttered room. In today’s fast-paced property market, the way you present your property is key to selling your home and achieving the best possible price.

hereareafewofmytipsthatIhavepickedupalong the way:

The Main ShoT This is the first image people see. Take time to wash the front door, especially if you live on one of the new estates. If there is enough space, add a pot plant to either side of the front door and tidy up any hedges or bushes in the front garden. This will show straight away that you care for your home and it will look inviting to potential buyers.

KiTchen ShoT This is one of the key images that buyers look for - a room that can make or break someone’s decision to purchase. Make sure that the surfaces are tidy and de-cluttered. Don’t leave the breakfast bowls in the sink or the dish cloth on the side.

Living RooM, Dining RooM anD STuDy ShoTS When including these images, make sure any televisions are turned off, cushions are straight and the tables are cleared of magazines and clutter. Create the sense of space by removing bulky furniture, if it isn’t meant to be in the room.

BeDRooM ShoTS I’m sure this one is obvious, but I still come across some images with the beds not made. It is important to make sure that any wardrobe doors shut properly and that all clothes are away. Remove the laundry basket as well, if you can.

exTeRnaL ShoTS Make your garden as attractive as possible. Pick up any stray footballs and move anything that will detract from the image.

2015 - Year of the Scam!If there was a “financial boom” in 2015, it was undoubtedly in the world of scamming! Fraudsters are traditionally one step ahead of the game. By the time the victims alert the authorities and they become headline news, these criminals are well into their next “con”. The victims usually never meet the person who has duped them, and the internet provides a brand new “Pandora’s Box” of smoke and mirrors and cruel deception.

Unfortunately, people duped often feel embarrassed and stupid at being taken in. Consequently, many do not report the fraud, and the numbers are much greater than official figures show.

New data, produced by Financial Fraud Action UK (FFA), revealed that, increasingly, the fraudsters are attempting to target individuals directly, putting much of the responsibility on not being scammed on self-vigilance and policing. This data also gave figures for prevented fraud - banks and credit card companies’ systems prevented a total of £910.9m fraud in the first six months of 2015.

There is an increasing number of property scams, where tenants are purporting to be the owners of some very valuable properties and selling to an innocent buyer. The fraudsters are looking for un-mortgaged, high-value properties where the actual owner does not live locally, and are prepared to spend a lot of time and effort in carrying through their, often complicated, plans. Occasionally, the Land Registry gets suspicious when the transaction is being reported, but by this time the money is usually in an offshore bank account and lost forever.

In one such case, the Daily Mail journalist Max Hastings was targeted and his wife’s West London house was “sold” for £1.35 million with the funds ending up in

a Dubai bank account before anyone was any the wiser.

The Land Registry was suspicious, so the sale

was never registered and Mrs Hastings kept her house.

In December, more than eighty people were convicted of the UK’s biggest “crash for cash” insurance scam after making more

than £760,000 of bogus claims. The criminals faked twenty-eight road accidents and made false insurance claims.

Another gang was convicted of a scam that managed to collect more than £600,000 from eighteen elderly victims by pretending to be the police, claiming the victim’s bank cards are being used fraudulently, telling them to phone their bank and get the money into a “safe” account. The criminals stay on the line, pose as bank officials, and get the victim to transfer the money into their own accounts. More than £23.6m was lost this way in 2014!

The FFA has issued guidelines to try and make the fraudsters’ life a little more difficult. The important things to remember are that it takes two people (either end) to terminate a call. If in doubt, use a different phone line or mobile, and contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve been stung.

Don’t worry about being embarrassed, silly or even wrong. It’s your money. Nobody is going to have a greater interest in protecting it than you!

sergeantmosley’smusings - Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse and its effect on the victim I find disgusting, in that someone can abuse another who they allegedly ‘love’, in order to gain control.

From December 29th 2015, the law was changed to close the gap around patterns of coercive and controlling behaviour as domestic abuse. Police are now expected to recognise, record and investigate offences under s.76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015, namely any pattern of incidents of “coercive” and “controlling” behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over in an intimate or family relationship.

“Controlling behaviour” is a range of acts designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependent, by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance and escape, and regulating their everyday behaviour.

“Coercive behaviour” is acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim. This definition includes so called “honour-based violence”, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, and is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group.

Domestic abuse can take place anywhere, not just in the home. Research has shown that it is rarely a one-off event. Abuse tends to happen more and more over time - each time getting more serious. Whatever the extent of the violence, the abuse almost always leaves those suffering it to feel frightened, isolated, humiliated or ashamed. Types of abuse can include, but are not restricted to:

• Isolatingvictimsfromfriends/family.

• Depriving them of basic needs.

• Monitoring their time (even in the toilet).

• Monitoring a person via online communication tools or spyware.

• Controllingaspectsofeverydaylifei.e.wherethey go, who they see, what they wear, when they sleep.

• Depriving access to support services, specialist support or medical services.

• Controloffinances–punitiveallowances.

• Threats to harm or kill.

• Threats to harm another e.g. a child.

• Threats to reveal, share or publish private information.

• Assaults, rape.

• Criminaldamage–destructionofhouseholdgoods.

• Preventingaccesstotransportorfrompursuing a working life.

If you suffer from, or witness any form of domestic abuse, please report it. Don’t suffer in silence. Lincolnshire Police are committed to dealing positively with all forms of domestic abuse and will support you through it, working closely with partner agencies.

Much of the end of last year was spent choos-ing which company would design and build the skatepark for us in Bourne. At several meetings at the nag’s Head, the three com-panies that tendered presented their design ideas to the potential users of the skatepark. there were representatives of a variety of multi-wheeled machines, scooters, BMX, skateboards and skaters; there was also a good range of skills. The young people were very enthusiastic and came up with lots of great ideas. The skatepark company, Wheels-cape, was selected after a detailed anal-ysis of the various companies’ designs and building experience. a Design Group, again made up of the young people from Bourne,

have spent over a month finalising the design with Wheelscape, ensuring all users will be catered for.

Once we have the final design, we will be able to show everyone what it looks like. We will discuss with those living nearby how the skatepark will be landscaped and how the design will minimise noise. We are current-ly negotiating the lease with Bourne United Charities for the land on the abbey lawn. tree surveys will be undertaken, as will an analysis of the ground by drilling boreholes. these all cost a lot of money, so any financial contri-butions to the project are welcomed. We are currently re-submitting our application to get charitable status as a Charitable incorporate Organisation.

the next big step will be to apply for planning permission. Before we do this, we will hold a public meeting to show everyone the plans and answer any questions people may have.

additional funding is needed to maintain the current level of activity and obviously, fol-lowing a successful planning application, full financing of the project with grants and fund raising will be needed to enable the park to be built.

several new members become got involved recently with the project. Maybe you should too? the more people that get involved, the sooner we will have a great multi-wheeled facility for the young people of Bourne.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Words from the Mayor

The mayoral year is racing relentlessly by, despite a quiet start to 2016, after a hectic November and December. We have both struggled to shake off coughs and colds and I understand that we are not alone. The break has allowed me time to finalise plans for a raft of events before I retire in May but also a time to reminisce.

When I got a cold as a child, my mum would recite a variety of reasons why I had brought it upon myself. I hadn’t eaten my greens; I had gone out with a wet head; I had not kept my cap on; and bizarrely, my hair needed cutting: I was immediately despatched to Harry Fisher’s, the local demon barber.

No plush salon, no comfortable waiting area, but a cold, draughty, wooden structure with a single light bulb the only sign of electricity.

Usually hours of dread, waiting, before being summoned to clamber on to a wooden slat placed across his chair which raised me to the appropriate height for the ensuing operation. No modern appliances here, only a large cut-throat razor, frequently sharpened vigorously on his strop for shaving old men, and a hand clipper. The trick with the clipper was to release it from the hair when the blades were in an open position. This was a trick Harry found difficult to master. Some hair between the collar and the small basin placed on top of the head was removed smoothly and painlessly but an equal amount was tugged out in clumps leaving red, tell-tale marks on my neck. An appointment with Harry was a traumatic experience - but it didn’t half encourage me to eat my greens, keep my cap on and not go out with a wet head!

We have a number of events in the planning stage. A Beetle Drive on the afternoon of Saturday April 9th; Bingo in Dyke, probably on March 19th; the Mayoress’s Tea Party on April 30th; Quiz Night on May 20th; and a Lancashire Themed Night at the Corn Exchange on April 2nd.

I am also hosting quizzes for Dyke Village Hall funds and the Church Hall funds on February 27th and March 5th respectively.

More details will appear in the March issue of “Discovering Bourne”.

Council newsThe start of another year, and it looks as if we are about to hit a spell of changeable weather. With that in mind, the campaign run by the Town Council to identify locations that could benefit from a grit bin has been rewarded by eight sites being put forward, to be licensed by Lincolnshire County Council. Once the relevant paperwork is received, the Town Council will be in a position to site the bins, enabling access to much-needed grit during periods of freezing weather.

the ‘in Bloom’ effort, spearheaded by the Town Council, will take on a new look this coming year, with volunteers being recruited to form a working party to enhance the look, feel and quality of the town and its environment. We have regular volunteer litter-pickers out and about, doing their bit to help keep the town clean and, with the Queen’s 90th birthday looming, we will be joining the rest of the country in a grand ‘Clean for the Queen’ effort on the weekend of March 4th, 5th and 6th. Watch this space for further details.

The Town Council has recently announced its inaugural ‘Community Champion of the Year’, which was presented to Mrs Nellie Sanders for the year 2015. Nellie has been a major force in raising money, by way of her amazing lunches, for both national and local charities. The award will become an annual event, where the general public will be asked to nominate their ‘Community Champion of the Year.’

One aspect of the town Council, not too familiar to many people, is their small Grants scheme. this allows the town Council to make small grants where, in the Council’s opinion, the grant is in the interest of, and will bring direct benefit to, the Council’s area, or any part of it, or all or some of its inhabitants. However, a grant cannot be made to an individual for an individual’s benefit only. Past recipients have been The Butterfield Centre, Dyke Village Hall Committee, Bourne 1st scouts, Royal British legion (Bourne Branch) and Bourne youth Choir, to name but a few. if you feel that your organisation could benefit from such a grant, an application form is available by e-mailing [email protected].

Stylish, elegant, and comfortable are not words usually associated with care homes. Country Court Care has broken the mould when it comes to designing and building care homes. Rose Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping is an example of how style and elegance have been incorporated into the development of a care home. Rose Lodge is spacious and feels more like being in a five-star hotel, rather than a sterile care home. Supported by a highly trained team of managers and staff, residents can be assured of the best personalised care in stunning surroundings in a “home-away-from-home” environment.

Spread over two floors, the bedrooms are tastefully decorated to match the luxury surroundings. All en-suites are wet rooms and promote dignity and independence. The lower floor boasts an orangery, where residents can dine and relax, which overlooks the enclosed gardens. There are also two separate lounge/dining areas, onsite hairdressers, a grand piano

and a beauty bar.

“Even though the home is spacious and has a feeling of being in a five-star hotel, it has kept a family feel and is welcoming

Rose lodge Care Home - spacious, elegant and with a family feel

and homely. Our philosophy is simple - families are at the heart of everything we do”: Julie Britten (Home Manager of Rose Lodge)

Country Court care are also winners of “Residential Care Provider of the Year” 2015 by Health Investor. Some of the judges’ comments focused on the family values and philosophy of the company.

Family means a lot to all of us, and we understand the importance of selecting the right care home. To find out more about Rose Lodge, or arrange to visit the home, please get in touch.

| Spotlight on Schools

Thurlby Community Primary school was established in 1878 and originally occupied a site on station Road, Thurlby. The school, with only four classrooms, eventually became inadequate to accommodate the increasing population and, in 1979, was split into two parts : five- to seven-year olds in the original building and others in a mobile classroom on Lawrance Park. In 1987, the two groups were reunited on the present site where we remain today. Further demand for places has been met by the addition of new classrooms and learning areas. Our school badge depicts the school bell in the tower, exactly as it appeared in the original school. The bell now hangs in the entrance foyer and is rung on the last day of the school year by departing Year 6 children.

The aim of Thurlby School is to provide an education which, through the promotion of high standards, allows every child to fulfil his or her potential to the maximum and to prepare pupils for life beyond the school.

We strive to achieve our aim by offering a broad and balanced curriculum, taught through a variety of teaching strategies without neglecting the important values of discipline, courtesy and good manners.

Our educational philosophy is one of “expectation and achievement”, and our ethos and learning environment retain the traditional warmth of a village school.

The last OFSTED in October 2013 concluded that we are a “good school” and that “good teaching helps all groups of pupils to make progress”. Standards at the end of Year 6

were judged as “above average” with “pupils’ good attitudes and behaviour contributing well to the school’s calm learning atmosphere”. Safety, support for children with special educational needs, sporting opportunities, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and leadership were all praised by inspectors.

We are passionate about providing curriculum enrichment through off-site activities linked to class studies, and this includes numerous day visits and residential trips for our older year groups looking at contrasting geography and geology.

We have retained a single age group class structure for many years and pride ourselves in targeting the needs of the children in a happy environment whilst working closely with parents. We enjoy celebrating our children’s successes through weekly whole school ‘reward assemblies’ and utilise a wide range of positive reinforcement strategies.

GET TO KNOW YOUR DOG

The idea of dominance and forcing changes of behaviour has gone, and has been replaced by reward-based training, producing willing co-operation.The whole idea is to build a relationship … and have fun. Most people do not want to compete at high level agility or obedience, but do want to be able to have some control and co-operation from their dogs.

We have had such fun training our dogs. Training (or rather, attempting to train) a chihuahua was a new challenge for me. I seem to have problems controlling my feet around such a little dog! It is also amazing how many treats a little dog can eat. She particularly likes smoked mackerel which is great for training … but not so good smelling of fish for the rest of the day. Besides training the basics (walking on the lead, sitting on command, recall and walking off the lead) we have done trick training and fun agility. We have taught our dogs to touch things with their nose or paws and then used this to make people think they can find things on command (secretly using the scent from treats). We have taught our dogs to weave between our legs and jump through our arms .Recently, we have combined a bit of agility and trickery and have our dogs jumping over and going under each other.

The main point of all this is building a strong relationship with your pet. At the same time, it is a lot of fun (as long as you do not take it too seriously ).When you can influence your pet with rewards and you play and have fun with them, then you become

For more information, please contact the surgery on 01778 422863.

For the last year, I have been training my chihuahua, Phoebe. At the same time, two of my sons, my daughter and my wife have been training our other dogs. Dog training has changed a lot over the last twenty years with a greater understanding of dog behaviour.

the person they want to be with above all other things . It does take time and patience, but it does not have to be forever - just enough to be able to set up that important relationship.

No matter how much you think you know about training dogs, it is good to train with other people and other dogs. There will be classes to suit any ability. All dogs and owners should experience this basic training to make the best of their relationships. There are many good trainers in the area and you can ask your local vet

for more information.

the national Gardens scheme invites members of the public to enjoy its first ever snowdrop Festival in February 2016, with over a hundred gardens open across england and Wales throughout February - an opportunity to see veritable carpets of beautiful snowdrops and watch spring slowly unfurl from winter.

And you don’t have to be a ‘galanthophile’ to enjoy the Snowdrop Festival. George Plumptre, Chief Executive of The National Gardens Scheme, says:

‘With not very much to do outside at this time of year, a visit to a Snowdrop Festival garden is the perfect way to get some fresh air and really start looking forward to spring. Whether you want to admire the different varieties of snowdrops or just have a walk in lovely surroundings, visiting a National Gardens Scheme garden in February will be the perfect escape.’

Visitors to Snowdrop Festival gardens will also have the benefit of knowing that their entrance fee is supporting wonderful causes; the National Gardens

Scheme currently donates over £2.6 million annually to its nursing and caring beneficiary charities, which include Marie Curie and Carers Trust.

The Windows Club (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/) is an excellent source of information for Microsoft Windows. They also have a library of tools including one for automatically fixing issues with Windows 10. Given the amount of work I am currently undertaking, digging people out of a large hole that Microsoft excavated for them with a very unreliable upgrade process from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10, this tool may well help people address issues on their systems.

To download the tool go to: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/fixwin-for-windows-10

Unlike most applications this tool does not need to be installed and will run straight off your hard disk, or memory stick; just double click on the FixWin_10.exe file.

Once opened, you will see a screen similar to that shown.

Follow the steps in order for the standard troubleshooting, starting with running a System File check.

Once this has completed, I’d suggest ignoring the Re-Register Store Apps and moving on to take a Restore Point. (Note: that if you have loaded the latest Windows update v1511, released in November, you are warned NOT to run the Re-Register tool.)

You can now move on to run the main repair tool Repair Windows System Image. This will take a little

time and you will hopefully see the screen shown when complete.

Remember: only use this tool, and other tools like it, if you are having problems. There is nothing to be gained from running this on a system that is working well.

Apart from this standard fix, there is also a stack of individual fixes and trouble-shooters available from the left hand panel. Once again, you should only run fixes mentioned if you are having a particular issue.

Some of these fixes/tools are fairly technical so be cautious, and if you are unsure about the instructions given, or what a fix is actually doing then seek expert advice.

The Windows Club website also has similar repair packages for Windows 7/Vista and Windows 8 available via their download section.

| In the Hot Seat

Regular contributor to “Discovering Bourne”, Taff Lovesey here takes a break from life as the analytical engineer, working on computer systems with his firm, “LITES P.C”, to relax in the “Hot Seat”.

Early R.A.F. life, as an electronics engineer, was followed in 1986 by a move into computer engineering. Extensive travel included four years in Oregon, U.S.A, before moving to Bourne in 2002, with wife of thirty-six years Bridget, and Jamie,(now aged 25) and Ceri,(23). Vice-chairman of Bourne Business Chamber, Taff also runs two “walking football” teams in Stamford and Netherton for the “more mature gentleman”. Fifty years a Spurs fan, Taff also writes fantasy novels, (such as “The year Spurs won the Premiership” – Ed.) and web design (WEBLites).

1) WHERE WERE You boRN, AND WHAT IS YouR FAvouRITE MEMoRY oF YouR CHILDHooD?

I was born at the Lydia Beynon maternity hospital in Newport, Gwent. My fondest memories are playing football with my mates out on the green at the back of our house, or finger-flicking my Subbuteo players around the indoor pitch, with my Hamilton Academicals set my pride and joy.

2) WHo HAS HAD THE gREATEST INFLuENCE oN YouR LIFE AND WHY?

In business, a guy called Casey Powell, (the founder of Sequent Computer Systems) whose policy was to provide superb customer service. His company motto was for us all to be ‘easy to do business with’, which fuelled my own passion for customer service.

In life, my kids Jamie and Ceri Lovesey. The love and parental instinct you feel for your kids is indescribable, and they continue to inspire me (and drive me crazy at times), even today in their 20s.

3) WHICH TWo CHARACTERS, ALIvE oR NoT, WouLD You MoST ENjoY SHARINg A MEAL WITH AND WHY?

Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of “Tarzan” and the “John Carter of Mars” series, which has inspired my own writing. When you consider the year they were written, they are amazing stories.

Eric Morecambe, because the guy can have me creased up in laughter with a single look.

4) HoW WouLD You DESCRIbE YouRSELF IN oNLY FIvE WoRDS?

Honest, intelligent, creative, football-mad and ageing.

5) IF THERE WAS oNE THINg WHICH You CouLD CHANgE AbouT bouRNE, WHAT WouLD IT bE AND WHY?

Easy one – a bypass. Bourne “High Street” would just come alive. The shops and cafes could move outside and people could wander about freely. I’d love that.

6) WHAT ADvICE WouLD You gIvE To A “SIxTEEN-YEAR-oLD You”?

Set up your own business early. I was very successful in corporate IT after leaving the RAF, but I wish I had set up LITES PC much earlier and worked for myself. Not only is it more enjoyable, but I would’ve been at home more when my kids were younger.

| Motoring - monthly advice from Tom Ingram

a glimpse at Mexico with Big Tom

IntensiveDrivingCoursesinPeterborough,Grantham,spalding,Stamford, Boston and Sleaford

Telephone free (inc. mobiles): 0800 689 4174

Welcome to my motoring section for February, and didn’t we have some very odd weather throughout christmas time? you have to spare a thought for the poor people “up-north” with all that flooding. although it was mild here, my family spent our christmas in a slightly warmer temperature of 30-35 degrees in Mexico!

As we travelled around on the roads, it was noticeable how much police presence there was in Mexico, compared to here in the UK. Police over there regularly stop vehicles, search lorries, and have regular police checkpoints in the roads. The “307” was our local dual-carriageway running down the east coast, (if anyone reading knows it). They have regular maximum speed limit changes, make regular use of speed awareness signs as you drive along and, unlike our dual-carriageways, they come with cycle lanes.

But for me, by far the most dangerous feature of their dual-carriageways was the option given to do a complete U-turn in a break in the central reservation (see image for an example). We have our own problems with the breaks in the central reservation on the A1 between Peterborough and Newark with vehicles crossing the A1 – over in Mexico they use them to do a U-turn!

As important as it is to continually strive to improve road safety (my regular readers will be only too aware of my views on that subject), it is worth acknowledging that the 2013 and 2014 road deaths comparison between nations, puts the UK second only to Sweden (Mexico being a long way down the list).

Do take care on the roads during these winter months, make sure your tyres are well maintained and your fluid levels are kept topped up in the engine. Wishing you all safe driving.

Tony Donovan has become something of a hit with the locals since he launched his new business “Ovenclean” - a service that restores even the dirtiest ovens to pristine condition within only a few hours.“My customers say I’m a Godsend!” he smiles. “I don’t know about that, but I know cleaning the oven is a chore most people hate; they have busy lives and enough to think about without worrying about the state of their oven!”Tony travels to customers’ homes in his fully equipped Ovenclean van. Using a powerful, yet eco-friendly system, he provides whatever cleaning services are required - from regular visits to keep the oven up to scratch to thorough cleans for ovens encrusted with grease and cooked-on food deposits.“There’s no typical customer,” he reflects. “Some are very house-proud and want to keep their oven immaculate, others are simply too busy to fit

in cleaning the oven until it gets to a point where they can’t put up with it any longer. No matter how dirty, I’m able to transform their oven so that it’s virtually as good as new. In fact, people are so impressed with the results that even those who have never had their ovens professionally cleaned before usually become regular customers.”

“It’s a wonderful business when customers can’t thank you enough – quite honestly, I’ve never been so popular!”
