TRAINER NOTES Session No.: 12 Session Title: Digital and Online Support in Literasi Bahasa Inggeris Description This session is designed to expose CPs on the different digital materials that can be used to teach the sounds of the English language. It provides opportunities for CPs to explore digital materials provided by MoE and resources that are available online. CPs should be able to incorporate the materials in remedial teaching. CPs will explore the possibility of developing their own materials to tailor to the needs of their pupils. Training outcomes The course participants will be able to: 1. Understand and explain the functions and roles of LMS, Frog VLE, EduwebTv and other online educational portals 2. Familiarise themselves with the navigation buttons 3. Identify and explore the appropriate digital material for use in their respective ESL classroom 4. Description

This session is designed to expose CPs on the different digital materials that can be used to teach the sounds of the English language. Suggested Instructional Language

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. How are you today?Let’s talk about gadgets! How many of you use

smartphones? tablets?

How many of you use more than one gadget?Have you used digital materials for teaching and learning on your gadgets? Have you used it with young learners?What are the problems that you face using these gadgets?Do you use the laptops/pcs/LCD projectors?Have you seen digital materials for teaching and learning? When? Where?Do you know the different types of digital materials provided by the Ministry of Education for the purpose of teaching and learning?Okay now let’s look at what we have here.

Activity 1(about 22 minutes)

Let’s Explore

Procedure1. Give a short briefing on digital materials.

2. Explain to participants that there are two versions of digital materials available namely the offline materials and online materials. Also list out and show samples/photos of the different materials that are available offline and online. Introduce the different Offline Materials that have been provided and are available to the teachers: CDRi MBI CDs

Suggested Instructional Language

There are two types of digital materials namely : Offline materials Online Materials

Offline materials are digital materials that are available in the form of CDs, materials which are parked in the servers in the computer rooms and materials which are given through hard disks and thumbdrives. Some such materials that have been given to schools by the MoE are :

Identifying the Right Material

Procedure1. Explain to participants on how to identify the right materials and

why multimedia based materials should be used compared to traditional materials and vice-versa.

2. Explain the different criteria of adopting a digital material to teach a certain component with examples.

Activity 3(about 22 minutes)

Getting to Know the Structure

Procedure1. Choose one item from Learning Objects.2. Launch the material and take the participants on a tour around the

website/material to familiarise the participants with the structure of how the material is built and can be of maximum use.

3. Show the theoretical framework.4. Go through the interface and the different buttons.

EXAMPLE:

Explain the function of each button used. Show how to use the ‘Help’ button to access the page.

Explain that this section gives a brief introduction about the title(sounds) taught. Explain on how a song is used to introduce the targeted sounds and how the song can be exploited for the teaching of the different sounds.

Explain that there are five (5) parts to the title taught in this section: identify and distinguish recognise and articulate blending and segmenting decodable words tricky words

Explain that at the end of each LO dealing with concept, there is at least one practice activity to reinforce learning. Show the different types of activities that are prepared to test the learner’s understanding of the concept taught.

Explain to the participants that there are two enrichment activities are available for each topic taught. The first is a pronunciation guide, and the second is an activity centered on strengthening the learner’s understanding through non-linear thinking.

Explain how testing/assessment of learner’s understanding of the topic taught is done through the 10 questions that are randomly presented in any one of the titles. Check how even the learner/parents can click the ‘Check Score’ button to see the score. From the results page, the learner can select a question to review by clicking on the corresponding question number.

Let’s Adopt and Adapt

Procedure1. Explain on the method of adopting the right digital material to be incorporated into the lesson.2. Explain on the different reasons a material should be adapted.3. Explain the different techniques of adapting the materials especially simplifying and enhancing the materials for the needs of the target audience.
