7th February 2018
Dear Parents, WHOOPS - Apologies – Incorrect Date! Last week I said the badge presentation assembly for our school leaders would be in two weeks’ time. I forgot the Year 6 students would be returning from camp that day. We have received the badges so this week’s Junior assembly will be a whole school assembly so we can, not only do the Junior assembly awards but also present our School Captains, House Captains and House Vice Captains their badges. We hope you can attend to congratulate these school student leaders and encourage them in their exciting and important roles in 2018. Getting to Know You Interviews For those who are new to Kilberry Valley, each year we commence with a Getting To Know you Interview, where you have a chance to meet your child’s teacher and inform them of the interesting things they need to know about your child. There has obviously been a hand over of information from the previous teacher (or information we have received from a previous school) to discuss, but this is a chance to develop a relationship between yourself and your child’s 2018 teacher. This relationship is vital to ensure the year is a wonderful one for your child, so I encourage you strongly to make an appointment as outlined in a note you have received this week and further on in the Valley Views. You can also follow this link for more information. http://www.kilberryps.vic.edu.au/admin/articles/article_edit/82
I hope to catch up with many of you over the week of the meetings. School Council Elections Next week I will outline the process if you wish to nominate for school council for 2018. This is usually a tight timeline with a week to nominate yourself or get someone else to nominate you, so please think about whether you would like to be a part of this group in 2018. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me through the school office or catch me in the yard and have a chat. There will be three parent vacancies due to the tenure of Kenny May and Annie Charles coming to an end and the departure of Michelle Hosking from the Kilberry Valley school community. Michelle has been a vital part of our school for 14 years. For ten of those years, Michelle served on council, being President for 7 years. Her youngest child graduated last year, so I take this opportunity to thank her greatly for the many years of service she has given to the Kilberry Valley school community. Year 6 Camp Next week our Year 6 Camp to The Briars will be held at Mt Martha. I know they will have a great time and I look forward to spending the day with them next Wednesday. Hoping for wonderful weather for the week!

I have included the following important information from last weeks’ Valley Views for your information in case you missed that edition. School Uniform Expectations It is tremendous to see the students have begun the school year so well by wearing their full uniform. I remind you that students should have their hats at school for term one and part of term two. The Uniform Policy also states no nail polish or jewelry is to be worn apart from watches or certain earrings (studs and sleepers only). If your child wears a turban or hijab, I would also ask you to ensure it is the colour of the uniform – either maroon, light blue or white. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Student Accident Insurance Each year I remind our school community that the Department of Education and Training does not cover the cost of student accidents. However there are some companies who can offer you inexpensive student accident insurance if you wish to cover your children while they are at school. Use the following web address to find a sample of insurance company links on our school website. http://www.kilberryps.vic.edu.au/page/106/Other-Publications or simply google ‘student accident insurance’ for a wider search for a suitable company that offers what you require. We do not recommend any particular company for insurance purposes. I also inform you that the Department of Education and Training does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property. Bike/Scooter Smart Pledge I remind you that all students from years 3 to 6 are able to ride their bikes or scooters to school but must complete a Bike/Scooter Smart Pledge before commencing to do so. These can be collected from the office or Mrs Newport (Monday to Wednesday) or Mr Clydesdale (Thursday and Friday). This outlines the expectations we require to ensure a safe passage to and from school for our students. No student in year Prep to 2 should be riding a bike or scooter to school unless under strict parental supervision at all times. This is a safety factor with the high level of traffic in the area. A huge concern also is the development of the students’ judgement and peripheral vision to safely negotiate the road issues they will face each day. Car Parks – Staff Only!! I remind you that the two car parks, in the school grounds with gates on Kilberry Boulevard and Warana Drive are for STAFF USE ONLY. It is too dangerous to allow cars to be moving in and out during school time and at drop off and pick up times. So please do not enter these areas at any time - for the safety of your children. General Courtesy Obeying the Road Rules around the School Precinct For your children’s safety I begin the year with a plea for your consideration and cooperation in ensuring you follow the road rules and display courtesy at all times when parking or driving around the school. Pick Up and Drop Off times are very busy in any school but as we have almost 600 families there will be a lot of traffic. I suggest you park a street or two away and have a stroll on a nice day with your children. When parking in the surrounding streets, it is imperative that you also follow the parking relations and rules. We must honour the local residents with courtesy also. We have tremendous neighbours around the school so please do not park in their driveways, on nature strips and ensure you obey the parking regulations in place. There are ‘No Standing’ signs in the area that must be obeyed. I remind you that the drop off spots at the front of the school in Kilberry Boulevard have a ‘No Parking’ sign that means that you cannot leave your car and come into the school ground. You must stay with your car. Have a great week and keep smiling! Neil Cunningham Principal

WEEKLY SPECIALIST AWARDS
In 1C and 1D we have been investigating how our drink bottles can help us to do maths.
We began by sorting our drink bottles. Students sorted their drink bottles in
their groups thinking about colours, size, material and amount of
water in them.
We then explored length and how we could measure the height of our drink bottles. Students chose to use unifix cubes, bundling sticks or counters as uniform units to measure. We found out that unifix blocks were the best
maths manipulative to use!
Finally, we explored the statement ‘All drink bottles weigh the same’.
Students brainstormed ways that we can weigh drink bottles and we decided to use hefting. This meant we had to
use our hands to feel the weight of two drink bottles and decide which one was heavier. After the investigation 1C and 1D decided that all our drink bottles do
not weigh the same!
Ms Smith and Miss Dominey saw lots of great teamwork and heard fantastic
maths language in our classroom. Great job 1C and 1D!

Dear Parents, Welcome back to the 2018 school year! I write to inform you of a change to the daily timetable. Due to a recent industrial agreement and staff feedback that an extended morning session would be more beneficial for our students, we commenced a new timetable today that will see some changes from previous years. The new times are: 8.50 – 9.00 Classrooms open 9.00 – 11.30 First session in the classroom or specialist areas 11.30 – 11.40 Eating lunch in the classroom 11.40 – 12.20 Lunch break 12.20 – 2.00 Second session in the classroom or specialist areas 2.00 – 2.40 Afternoon Recess break 2.40 – 3.30 Third session in the classroom or specialist areas As this change will see the students eating lunch earlier, there will be the need for a snack in the afternoon to be packed as well as their lunch. Please include food that can be eaten in this way, so there is a difference in what your child can eat at each designated time. Due to the length of the first teaching session there will still be a fruit break taken sometime in the morning. Individual teachers will determine the appropriate time that this will occur each day. So please still pack the wonderful fruit snack that we see daily. So in summary – a fruit break snack, lunch and an afternoon snack would be an ideal daily lunch box. Staff will talk the students through this change and suggest ideas for them to ensure they eat appropriately at the correct time. The canteen will ensure the main lunch is available at the earlier time. Due to this new timetable, the canteen will be open each lunch break, but only open in term 1 and term 4 during the afternoon recess for icy poles and the like. We look forward to this alteration being more beneficial to your children’s learning, but realise there will need to be a time of adjustment for us all to get used to it. Thank you in anticipation for your cooperation with this change. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher, or myself, if you have any queries. Looking forward to a fantastic 2018. Have a great day!

GETTING ALONG
OUR FOCUS THIS FORTNIGHT:
BEING A GOOD FRIEND
SHARING
COOPERATING INCLUDING OTHERS
One of our children in the school community is receiving medical treatment which puts them at serious risk if they are exposed to
infectious illnesses, in particular: Chicken -Pox, Measles, Mumps or Shingles.
It is also important that while your child is unwell they remain at home until they
are no longer contagious. Please let us know immediately by calling the
school office on 9702 8688.
As a school community we value your support in relation to the wellbeing of all our students.
Any parent who wishes to help out in our classrooms or on excursions, must provide a current Working With Childrens Card (WWCC) to the office. On the day you come to assist, please come through the office and sign in the visitors book, you will be given a “Classroom helper Privacy Agreement” to read and sign. CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR STUDENTS
We would like to remind parents to
provide a change of clothing in children’s school bags—preferably some clean
underwear, track suit pants, windcheater, shorts or a dress.
This is handy for
ALL children in ALL grade levels .
It makes them feel less stressed if they require a change of clothing owing to an accident or a blood nose or
they fall in the mud.
We ask for your co-operation with this matter as our Sick Bay is unable to cope
with the large volume of people requiring changes of clothing.
THANK YOU
