Dear Parents,

Grey Haired Preps?

What was going on last Friday as

we saw many grey haired Preps and

walking sticks?! I mentioned last

week the junior school students

were celebrating 100 days of school

for 2015 and we saw many

centurions attending on Friday.

(It actually felt great to have a few

people at school with more grey

hair than myself!) One thing is a

certain at Kilberry Valley Primary

School – that is when we have a celebration of some sort the

wonderful food and creativity of the school community come to

the fore. We have a very creative community, so check out some

of the food I tasted and saw on Friday. You are so amazing!

Your involvement makes our great school so special –

thankyou!

School Assemblies

If you have attended our school assemblies you will

know that they are totally organised and run by our

school leaders. There is quite a process each Friday to

ensure all the awards have been finalised and any

staff are consulted to ensure the students know the

successful classes or students for the variety of

encouragement awards that are publically presented at

these assemblies. I wish to acknowledge the

organisation completed by our leaders. They do it all

themselves and only seek assistance if there is an

issue they cannot resolve – which is rare!

From week 3 each term (as a rule) we also have classes performing as part of the performing

arts thrust we have at Kilberry Valley. This is always such fun and we see the creativity of the

staff and students as they select a performance of their choosing each week.

Last Friday 1CC and 1LG entertained the crowd with their rendition of the song Hi5 Base to

Outer Space. Assemblies are a great time to get together and you are always most welcome to

attend. They commence on Friday afternoons at 2.45pm with the senior school (years 3-6) and

junior school (years Prep – 2) alternating weeks.

Staffing News

You would be aware that Maramba Primary School has been through quite a tough time lately with the

passing of their Principal Andrew Groh. Due to the Acting Principal now taking some leave, I have been

approached by regional Department of Education and Training personnel to assist the school by fulfilling the

role of Principal for the remainder of the term. The school is currently undertaking a selection process for a

new Principal to commence in term 4. Therefore, I am in the interesting, and certainly challenging, space of

being Principal of Kilberry Valley Primary School and Co-Principal of Maramba Primary School for the rest

of this term. I will be required to split my time between two schools, but I have full confidence in the

Kilberry Valley staff to be able to take up any actions required here in my absence. Thank you in advance

for your cooperation and support while we help out a neighbouring school.

Parent Opinion Survey

If you did receive one of the surveys. I ask you to please return it as soon as possible – by this Friday would

be wonderful.

ICAS

We would like to congratulate the following students who obtained a distinction in the recent Digital

Technologies ICAS testing.

Rusandi Botheju, Selini Athauda, Suran Jashandeep, Bushan Guruge, Thevni Karunaratna, Nimisha

Kulkarni, Dhanidu Pinnawala, Inuka Wickramasighe and Gathika A Withanage

Thursday 30th July – Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)

All students enrolled in the AMC test will need to meet on the deck outside the grade 6 classrooms at

7:40am on Thursday 30th July so that we are ready to begin testing at 7:50am. All students will need to

bring a calculator, 2B or B pencil and eraser!

Footy News

Another annihilation that the Hawks dealt out to the Blues on Friday night. A percentage

booster that will be handy as the end of the season approaches. The fight for the top 2 spots

will be close so a strong percentage will be essential! Hopefully this can continue this Friday

night again as the Hawks face the Tigers at the MCG in another Friday night clash.

Go Hawkers!

Have a great week and keep smiling!

OPEN DAY 9th August 2015

11.30 - 3.30pm

1CT and 1CS, together with the Year Ones, celebrated

100 fabulous days of learning at Kilberry Valley.

We all planned learning experiences that focussed

on the number 100.

Students in 1CT and 1CS had a wonderful day working together.

They made crowns, counted to 100 in different ways ; by tens, fives,

twos and ones. 100 wooden blocks and 100 cups were used to make

different structures. The scales were used to compare the

weights of different bags of items.

Which was heavier—100 M&Ms or 100 cotton buds?

100th Day of Learning

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge has started for 2015.

Consent forms have been sent home, please sign and return to school to

enable your child to be registered.

Let’s make 2015 our best challenge ever……..start Reading!!!!

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN

Woolworths Earn & Learn is back for 2015.

This community program enables schools to earn

educational resources when anyone in the school

community shops at Woolworths.

Starting from 15th July to 8th September, 2015 anyone from our school

community can collect stickers to place on sticker cards available

at all Woolworths stores.

You will get one sticker for every $10 you spend.

It’s that easy!

When you have filled your cards with stickers

you can place them in the Earn & Learn box

located in the foyer at the School Office.

Thank you in anticipation of your

support for this program.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

It’s that time of year again when we ask for some wonderful volunteers to help

us with sewing for our costumes for the school musical.

If you can help, please come to the Art Room every Friday afternoon from 2pm.

THANK YOU

CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR STUDENTS

We would like to remind parents to

provide a change of clothing in children’s school bags (preferably some clean underwear, track suit pants, shorts or a dress), particularly as we are coming into cooler and

wet weather

This is handy for ALL children in ALL grade levels as it makes them feel less stressed if they require a

change of clothing owing to an accident. We ask for your co-operation with this matter as our Sick Bay is unable to

cope with the large volume of people requiring changes of clothing.

THANK YOU

WELFARE CORNER

Supporting learning in the home

For some areas of learning, children may need lots of support.

This is especially the case when they are learning new things.

As children’s abilities develop, they gradually become more

independent in their learning and parents and carers can start to

reduce their direct involvement. Parents and carers can assist

children to think through tasks to support their learning and build

independence. Teaching children thinking skills can also help

children to become independent thinkers and learners.

Some other ways parents and carers can support their children’s

learning include:

Providing a challenge that is just beyond what your child

can already do easily by him or herself

Giving prompts

Asking questions

Showing the steps involved

Praising your child for attempting the task, not just

succeeding

Watching to see if your child is struggling or becoming

frustrated, as these may be signs that the task is too hard
