Dear Parents, Kids Hope One of the amazing programs we offer at Kilberry Valley is the Kids Hope program. On a weekly basis we see wonderful volunteers coming to school to spend valuable time with some of our students. I was thrilled to see this type of community outreach in the school when I came in 2008 and the dedication of these people to assist our students is tremendous to witness. Each week we see a variety of activities being undertaken by the mentors and their students and great relationships being developed. Below is a notice from Bert Langerak, the Kids Hope coordinator inviting anyone to attend their church this Sunday as they highlight the Kids Hope program. I look forward to the pleasure of being able to address the church and thank them for their caring involvement with our students.

COME AND JOIN US on Sunday 18th November at the church that provides Kilberry Valley Primary

School with Kids Hope Australia Mentors. The Christian Reformed Church of Casey is situated at 350-352 Pound Rd, Narre Warren South. We are having a special service focusing on Kilberry Valley Primary School and the work that the mentors do on a weekly basis. One of the speakers will be Kilberry’s Principal – Mr. Cunningham. The service commences at 9.30 a.m. Refreshments are served after the service. We would love to welcome you. Remembrance Day Congratulations to everyone, and in particular Ms Cifuentes, for the respectful manner in which the Remembrance Day ceremony was conducted last Friday. I was unfortunately not at school but am reliably informed that it was once again a tremendous time where the community met to thank and remember the fallen and currently serving defence personnel. We truly are fortunate to live in such a free country and need to remind ourselves from time to time. I also thank the Hampton Park Secondary College Cadets for their important part in the ceremony - it’s always great to see them and catch up with some of our ex students.

Human Powered Vehicle The team is putting the final touches to their preparation for the big event in Maryborough next week. All the training and effort will come to the fore on Thursday to Saturday as they present their efforts and ride the vehicle in the event. I look forward to catching up with them on the Friday to see how they are travelling and I am sure they will give their best and make the absolute most of this amazing opportunity. I take this opportunity to thank Mr Bailey, Miss Weston, Miss Toates and Mrs Taylor for their time with the team and for attending with them over the 3 days. How good does the new machine look!!!! I think it looks fast so I can’t wait to see how many laps they can achieve this year!! All the best.

2013 Book Supplies Please continue coming to the office to pay for your children’s supplies for 2013. To enable the correct order to be placed, we do require you to pay for your books and other contributions this year. Remember there is a discount on the voluntary contributions if they are paid before the end of the year. I look forward to seeing a rush at the office over the next few weeks to get this done. BOOKLIST & PARENT CONTRIBUTIONS 2013

We would like to remind ALL families that orders and payments

for next year are now being taken.

Notices have been sent home with students.

All monies will be required to be fully paid prior to the

end of the 2012 school year.

The cost of the book pack across all year levels is

$125 per student, which is excellent value and the same cost

as the 2012 book pack.

All supplies will be distributed to the

classroom teacher in January 2013.

The Curriculum Resource Contribution is $65 per

student ($60 if paid by the end of the 2012 school year).

This contribution ensures that high quality programs

will continue to be provided to your child.

Payments can be made via the following methods:

Cash, Credit Card, Cheque, EMA (credit balance only)

or Direct Deposit:

The Government is restructuring the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013 to better provide education support to families on a low income. Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible recipients at all year levels, with an additional increase for parents with students in Years Prep and Year 7 to support transition costs. The EMA is being restructured to increase the focus on direct support to parents. The changes to the payment amounts for EMA starting in 2013 include:

$200 for parents of eligible Prep students per year

Paid by 2 instalments annually: 70% March $140, & 30% in August $60

$150 for parents of all other eligible primary school students

Paid by 2 instalments annually: 70% in March $105, & 30% in August $45

School-based EMA payments will be discontinued in 2013.

Note that The School Start Bonus payment has been discontinued. To be eligible for EMA, you must be the holder of a current Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit, that is a holder of Veterans Affairs Gold Card, or Health Care Card, or Pensioner Consession Card, be a Veteran Affairs Pensioner, or be a (temporary) foster parent. Eligibility dates (as per stated on card):

Term 1 29th January 2013 Term 3 15th July 2013

To apply for 2013 EMA please complete the new EMA Application Form (available from the School’s Administration Office)

and present your Health Care or Pension Card for photocopying.

The cost of this activity is $60. WILD ACTION INCURSION (EAL STUDENTS GRADES 1-6) Consent forms and payments MUST be returned by Wednesday, 21st November, 2012. The cost of the incursion is $10. YEAR 6 2013 WINDCHEATER & POLO SHIRT ORDER FORM Order forms and payments must be received by Monday, 3rd December, 2012. GRADE 6 CAMP 2013 Consent forms and a non-refundable deposit of $50 MUST be received by Friday, 30th November, 2012. Final payments will be due by Monday 4th February, 2013. The approximate cost of the camp is $270. GRADE SIX GRADUATION NIGHT & GRADUATION EXCURSION Consent forms and payments MUST be returned by Thursday 6th December, 2012. Breakfast Club is offering FREE TOAST

to a particular year level each week.

This week all JUNIOR STUDENTS (GRADES PREP—2) who visit Breakfast Club are offered a FREE piece of toast.

Our tally of meals served at Breakfast Club so far this year is now a whopping 2536 WOW! Let’s see if we can hit 3000! (We are getting very

PEANUT ALLERGIES: Unfortunately we are unable to offer

Breakfast Club to children with nut allergies. Although we do not

serve ‘nut foods’, we cannot guarantee that our kitchen is a complete

‘Nut Free Zone’.

WELFARE CORNER How parents and carers can help children cope with grief.

Knowing what to say and how to talk to children to help with loss and grief is

not easy, especially when you are also experiencing a loss and all the feelings

that go with it.

Acknowledge children’s feelings

Let children know that you understand they are having difficult feelings.

Offer support and reassurance. Let them talk about feelings and ask

questions.

Children need to know

Explain what has happened in plain language that children can understand.

Knowing what has happened helps children find ways to cope.

Maintain routines

Along with loss there are usually big changes. Keeping up normal routines as

much as possible reduces the number of changes and helps children feel more

secure.

Talk about your feelings

Children are sensitive to your moods and reactions. Telling children how you

feel, and how you are managing your feelings, helps children make sense of

their own feelings. It is important to be real with children, but try not to

burden them with your emotional needs. By showing children that you can

cope with grief, even though you are sad, you can help them understand grief

as a normal part of life.

Get your own support

Sometimes your own grief will make it difficult for you to support your child.

Be sure you too seek support to help you through your own grief, whether

from friends, family or a professional counsellor.

Let the school know

Letting your child’s teachers know what has happened means they can support

and monitor your child’s well being at school.

When grief is very intense or when it lasts a long time it can interfere with

children’s ability to manage everyday life. It may also lead to mental health

problems such as anxiety or depression. If you are concerned that you child is

not coping with a loss, you should consider seeking additional help from a

health professional such as your local doctor or psychologist.
