Term 4— Issue 3
23rd October 2019
Dear Parents, 2020 Prep Information Evening Tomorrow night, Thursday 24th October, is our Prep Information evening. This is a great night where you will hear about the things you can do to prepare your child for Prep 2020. If you know of anyone who has still not enrolled at Kilberry Valley for next year but does intend to come, please ask them to come along on Thursday night or come to the office to fill in the enrolment forms. The earlier we know actual numbers the better we can plan for the new year. Are You Leaving Kilberry Valley And Haven’t Let Us Know? Thank you so much to the families who have let us know they won’t be at Kilberry Valley Primary School in 2020. This has been very helpful determining our numbers and obviously staffing requirements for next year. If you have not contacted the school or filled in the form sent home last term, please contact the office and let us know your plans. Book Fair It was wonderful to see so many parents and students utilising the Book Fair to increase their supply of great reading material. Mrs Merritt would like me to thank the parents, grandparents and staff who gave their time to assist at the Book Fair. Thanks to
Bev & Kelvin Park Jacinta Parkinson Nicole & Dean Couch Karen Dean Belinda Haslett
This assistance ensured the Book Fair was a great success . I hope everyone really enjoys their new books. Premiers Reading Challenge
The Premiers’ Reading Challenge finished near the end of last term and I take this opportunity to congratulate the 556 students who participated in this year’s challenge reading 19,316 books between them. What a great effort! Reading gives such joy and I sincerely hope you all gained a lot of joy reading the books this year.

At Kilberry Valley Primary School, we believe
that student success is dependent upon good
attendance at school. Students need to
attend school regularly in order to participate
fully and gain maximum benefit from their
schooling. Daily attendance enables students
to access a full education, allowing them to
reach their full potential. Students with poor
patterns of attendance in primary school
usually have poor patterns in secondary
school and often disengage from school.
There is a direct link between school
attendance and achievement in later life. Poor
attendance also makes it difficult for children
to form positive relationships with their peers
therefore, we feel that regular attendance is
essential for KVPS students.
OUR FOCUS THIS FORTNIGHT:
Giving Effort
Keep trying till its right—don’t get frustrated, don’t give up
Always trying your best
Push yourself to achieve your best
Shrink your red (unhelpful) thoughts and grow your green
(helpful) thoughts
Encourage others to keep going

How to help your child with their reading…
This term in our newsletter, we will be
exploring ‘The Big 5’ of reading
development. Research has found that
each of these is an essential building
block towards our students becoming
successful readers.
The Big 5
Phonic Knowledge Phonic knowledge is the understanding of sound-letter correspondence to
‘decode’ words when reading.
There are 26 letters in the alphabet and
44 sounds. Letter names are important
but knowing the sounds that letters
make is a powerful predictor of reading
success.
The take home readers that students
bring home are decodable texts.
They give them the opportunity to
independently apply their sound
knowledge. Reading every night is
essential to practise these skills.
CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR STUDENTS
We would like to remind parents to provide a change of clothing in children’s
school bags—preferably some clean underwear, track suit pants,
windcheater, shorts or a dress.
This is handy for ALL children in ALL grade levels .
We ask for your co-operation with this matter as our Sick Bay is unable to cope
with the large volume of people requiring changes of clothing.
One of our children in the school community is receiving medical
treatment which puts them at serious risk if they are exposed to
infectious illnesses, in particular: Chicken -Pox, Measles,
Mumps or Shingles.
It is also important that while your child is unwell they remain at home until they
are no longer contagious. Please let us know immediately by calling
the school office on 9702 8688.
As a school community we value your support in relation to the wellbeing of
all our students.
Any parent who wishes to help out in our classrooms or on excursions,
must provide a current Working With Childrens Card (WWCC) to the office.
Its free to register as a volunteer https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/
On the day you come to assist, please come
through the office and sign in using the visitors kiosk, you will be given a “Classroom helper
Privacy Agreement” to read and sign.
Please ensure you bring your Working With Childrens Card with you, to display in our lanyard, which you will wear while in the
classroom or on excursions.
If your child is absent from school,
please ring the office on 9702 8688
before 9.30am on the morning of the
absence or notify us by e-mail
THANK YOU
