Dear Parents, Pupil Free Day Next Friday 8th May Next Friday, 8th May, is a Pupil Free Day when staff will be working in their teams discussing the moderation of the students’ reports. NO STUDENTS ARE TO ATTEND SCHOOL. ANZAC DAY Assembly What a tremendous culmination of so much learning that has occurred over the last few weeks as we experienced a wonderful student led assembly last Friday. It was my pleasure to watch the School Captains conduct the assembly with such confidence and reverence. We are so fortunate to live in a great country where we can express our thanks to those who currently serve to keep us safe and those who have gone before. There have been many stories told in class regarding family experiences and memories as we commemorated the 100 Years since Gallipoli. I know the staff and students have really enjoyed hearing these. I had the pleasure of attending an ANZAC Day service in Mornington on Saturday that focused strongly on the locals who had served in the First World War. This was a moving and heart felt service with the realisation that over half the male population of the time on the Mornington Peninsula signed up to serve. Apparently there were only approximately 2000 people living on the Peninsula back in 1915 and over 600 men served in the war. (I know there would have also been women who served, but the number was not stated at the ceremony). I thank everyone for their efforts in making the lead up to ANZAC Day a very informative time for our students. It is hard for someone my age who has thankfully not seen war first hand, to imagine the feeling at the time, but it is also thankfully even harder for our students to imagine what it must have been like. However, I feel they will now have at least a better appreciation of the sacrifices that did occur and continue to occur to keep Australia the wonderful country it is today. Mothers Day Stall – Wednesday 6th May Next Sunday 10th May is Mothers Day and we will be conducting our Mothers Day stall on Wednesday 6th May due to the Pupil Free Day on Friday 8th May. Please read the information later on the Newsletter re helpers for the stall. I remind you that all presents are priced at $5 and there is a wide variety of items to choose from due to the great buying of our parents who look after the stall for us each year, ably led by Belinda Haslett. Thanks heaps to all of you.
2016 Enrolment Information evening Each year we hold our new enrolments Information Night in May to outline the tremendous opportunities that we provide for students in our area. This will happen on Wednesday 13th May commencing at 7.00pm in the Gallery. I ask you to pass this information on to anyone you know is looking for a school for their children in 2016. The night involves general information from the Prep team, Assistant Principals Christine Taylor and Zania Cope and myself. We also have our School Captains outlining their impressions of the school and some of their experiences. We hope to see many people on the night and at our school tours that have now commenced. I encourage any parents looking for a school to come along on a Tuesday or Friday morning (held on alternate weeks) to walk around Kilberry Valley when it is operating. I often say to parents this is the only way you can get the ‘feel’ of a school. We thoroughly enjoy the chance to walk around with prospective families showing the students and staff in action. Please call the school office on 97028688 to book a time. Hope to see many people at the information evening and please start spreading the word about the tours and information night for prospective parents. Footy News Oh Dear – again!! I seem to be saying this too often to commence the season. It was a bit scary to see how Port Adelaide blasted out of the blocks in the first quarter and the Hawks could simply not catch up! There were many opportunities to do so and with a little straighter kicking at times the result may have been different. Having said that - the kicking only went astray as a result of the pressure the Port players put on the Hawkers and they deserved the win. I am confident a long winning streak will start this week with a game on Saturday against the Kangaroos. Go Hawkers!! Have a great week and keep smiling!

NAPLAN It is that time of the year again when we start to think about the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The 2015 tests for Year 3 and Year 5 students will be held on Tuesday 12th May, Wednesday 13th May and Thursday 14th May (Week 5, Term 2). NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Excessive preparation is not useful and can lead to unnecessary anxiety. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, you are encouraged to make a time to speak with their teacher. NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learned over time through the school curriculum, and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. ACARA does not recommend the use of commercial products, such as booklets and practice tests, to help your child prepare for NAPLAN tests. None of the commercial products currently on the market are endorsed by ACARA. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended. If you would like any further information this can be found at www.nap.edu.au

PARENT FORUMS 2015
All staff, parents and friends are invited to a series of forums to be held in the Emerson Room at the Heatherton Road Campus throughout 2015. At each session, we will present topics that will give us an insight into our children’s behaviour so that we can assist our children in reaching their potential. Each session will begin at 7.30 and conclude at 9.00 pm.
FORUM ONE: WEDNESDAY, 25TH MARCH, 2015 ‘HOW DIFFICULT CAN THIS BE’
Richard Lavoie, an expert on Learning Disability, leads a group of parents, education psychologists and children through a series of exercises that cause frustration, anxiety and tension….feelings all too familiar to children with learning disabilities. He lets us see the world through the eyes of a child with special needs.
FORUM TWO: WEDNESDAY, 29TH APRIL, 2015 ‘CYBERBULLYING’
Cyberbullying is any kind of bullying or harassment using any type of technology. This session will provide participants with the skills to protect themselves and their children.
FORUM THREE: WEDNESDAY 27TH MAY ‘LAST ONE PICKED….FIRST ONE PICKED ON’
This video is about how children with special needs have problems with their social skills. Richard Lavoie will give us strategies on how to improve our children’s abilities to communicate more effectively and develop friendships.
FORUM FOUR: WEDNESDAY 24TH JUNE ‘WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN….’
In this video Richard Lavoie talks about building positive self esteem in our children. He will also give us strategies to change our children’s misbehaviour.
FORUM FIVE: WEDNESDAY, 26TH AUGUST ‘IT’S SO MUCH WORK TO BE YOUR FRIEND’
This video explores the causes and consequences of having ‘social incompetence’. Richard Lavoie provides powerful strategies for teaching students friendship skills.
FORUM SIX: WEDNESDAY, 28TH OCTOBER ‘EFFECTIVE MANGEMENT OF CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS’
This session provides participants with an understanding and appreciation of why students misbehaviour and how this effects their learning outcomes. Practical and effective strategies will be provided to attendees in managing a range of challenging behaviours. This session is particularly relevant to parents, teachers and other professionals dealing with children who have been diagnosed with Autism, I hope you can join us in what will be six entertaining and informative sessions.

CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR STUDENTS
We would like to remind parents to provide a change of clothing in children’s school bags (preferably some clean underwear, track suit pants, shorts or a dress), particularly as we are coming into
cooler and wet weather
This is handy for ALL children in ALL grade levels as it makes them feel less stressed if they require a
change of clothing owing to an accident. We ask for your co-operation with this matter as our Sick Bay is unable
to cope with the large volume of people requiring changes of clothing.
THANK YOU
WELFARE CORNER
Building better family relationships: There are lots of ways to show you care
even in busy families. Tune in:
One way to show you care is by listening to what other family
members have to say with interest and enthusiasm. Other ideas
include doing things for one another helping (without
complaining!), celebrating birthdays and achievements and taking
the time to understand how other family members are feeling.
Hugs are another favourite.
Have fun together:
Spend time doing things you enjoy. Doing simple things that allow
you to relax and play together is very important for building
positive feelings and connections amongst family members.
Playing games or sports, going to the park, on picnics, visiting with
friends or just relaxing together are examples of family activities
that help build relationships.
Family rituals
Family rituals can help to build a sense of connection and
belonging. These may include family celebrations that happen
once year, as well as everyday activities like bedtime stories,
morning cuddles or cooking a special meal together once a week.
Having family rituals that you enjoy together helps to create strong
family bonds.
Make time to talk
Regular time for talking and listening to one another helps families
to plan and set priorities, strengthen relationships and build mutual
understanding. Taking a few minutes to talk with children after
school or before bedtime, and making time for adults to ‘check in ‘
with each other, is important for building connections and
cooperation. Family discussions are often very helpful ways of
resolving conflicts and maintaining positive relationships. Make
sure that everyone gets a turn to share feelings and thoughts and
contributes to finding solutions that can work for the whole family.
