receive a star on the Hollywoodwalk of fame. Penelope Cruz, whois married to fellow Spanish actorJavier Bardem, tells TOI abouther work, family and B-townaspirations

In the last decade or so,almost all the films that you havedone have been critically-acclaimed. How do you choosethese films? I love working inEurope and most of the timeswhen I'm working in America, Itend to choose smaller projectswith less action because that'swhere I find the most interestingcharacters. You have collaboratedwith Woody Allen again, fouryears after your film Vicky CristinaBarcelona, for which you got anOscar nomination. Working withWoody was easier this timebecause I knew him, so I wasn'tso nervous because of all thestories you hear about him. He ispeculiar and unique and different, but it is really a blessing to spendtime with him. He is one of thefunniest people in the world.Every day he does something thatsurprises you and that you willremember forever. How differentis it working in mainstream

Hollywood, art-house cinema andregional cinema?

Hollywood mainstreamcinemas are mostly big-budget andmajestic with a lot of attention fromthe masses, so you are on your toesmost of the time. However, art-house cinema has limitedaudiences and are heard about bythe word of mouth, so they are farmore relaxed in terms of attentionfrom the crowd.

What kind of cinema appealsto you?

Cinema that has somemessage or maybe something thatadds meaning.

You are a working wife andmom. How do you juggle yourresponsibilities effectively andwhen and how do you find themuch-needed 'me' time?

I don't need much 'me' timebecause I believe in 'we' more. However, I am trying to take up onlyone or two movies a year so that Ican spend enough time with mybaby and husband when he is athome.

What is a day in your life like? It's like every normal person. I

get up, work out, am with my baby, spend time with the family and domy work — designing and all that. You have been to India inassociation with your charity work.

Are you likely to visit the countryagain?

Right now, I am a littleoccupied with my baby, but yes, directly or indirectly the charitycontinues. I will visit India. I lovethat country.

In your two decades as anactor, is there a feeling that youhave not done enough? Is therea dream role that continues toelude you? Have you ever feltrestricted in the kind of roles youget because of your ethnicity?

No, I think I have been veryfortunate to have the kind of rolesthat I have had. I loved them, butthe only thing that I always feelis I could have done it better. I ama critic of my own work. I alwayskeep thinking of various otherways in which I could I have acertain role.

Who is your favourite co-star and director? My husband(Javier Bardem).

Would you ever do anIndian film?

India is a culturally strongcountry and very traditional.Bollywood is now making itsmark and people in Hollywoodwant to work with the Indian starsand in Bollywood too. I wouldlove to work with Shah RukhKhan.

I’d love to work with Shah Rukh Khan: Penelope

NEW DELHI/BUREAU NEWS: Slamming the PM for allowing FDIin multi-brand retail, BJP veteran L K Advani on Sunday said a redcarpet was being rolled out forWalmart when the retail chain wasfacing protests in the US and evenas New York had 'shut Walmartout'. Advani also said BJP hadopposed the measure when NDAwas in power.

In his blog on Sunday, he saidCongress leader P R Dasmunshi inDecember 2002 had saidbureaucrats were beingpressurized by multi-nationalretailers even when a group ofministers (GoM) and a task forceof the Planning Commission onemployment had rejected FDI inretail. "Dasmunshi had said thatthrough bureaucrats, multi-national retailers were continuously putting pressure on thegovernment to take this anti-national decision of allowing foreigndirect investment in retail trade," Advani said.

He said when Dasmunshi raised this issue in Parliament, thencommerce and industry minister Arun Shourie stood up and said

Wal-Mart not even welcome in US: Advanithat as per the existing policy since 1997, foreign direct investmentin retail trade was not permitted. Advani also referred to Shourie's

assurance to Dasmunshi inParliament that PlanningCommission's endorsement of FDIin retail in the 10th plan, shot downby the GoM, would 'anyway haveto be vetted by CMs at the NationalDevelopment Council meeting thatwas coming up'. Advani alsoreferred to the reported unrestbrewing against Walmart invarious US cities at a time whenthe government here was 'rollingout the red carpet' for it.

Quoting a report on thesubject, he said that on September14, 'when the PM rolled out the redcarpet for Walmart, the same dayNew York City shut Walmart out'.

He also referred to a web-based newspaper which said how Walmartdisplaced nearby small businesses. "Weeks ago, on June 30, over10,000 people, shouting 'Walmart=Poverty', marched through LosAngeles against Walmart stores," Advani said, quoting from thearticle.

AN EDGE OVER ROMNEY ON MEDICAREWASHINGTON: A new USA Today/Gallup Poll released Mondayshowed voters in 12 swing states favoring President Barack Obamaover Mitt Romney 50 to 44 percent. Nationally, Obama holds a slightlylarger advantage on this issue among voters.

Swing-state voters are slightly more likely to believe Obamaand Vice President Joe Biden have put forth a planon Medicare (51%) than to believe that Romney andGOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan have(44%), although Ryan authored a budget passed bythe House of Representatives that includedsignificant changes to the Medicare program. Ryan'sbudget was never passed by the Senate, and its lackof legislative success may partly explain thisawareness gap. On the other hand, Obama signedinto law the highly visible Affordable Care Act in2010, and it's possible some voters are referring tothis piece of legislation when thinking about Obama'splan for Medicare.

Swing-state voters are not particularly optimistic, though, thateither ticket will have a positive impact on Medicare. A third ofvoters say each would strengthen Medicare, another third say eachwould weaken it, and a similar percentage say each candidate'schanges to Medicare would not make much difference.

By 53% to 44%, swing-state voters are more pessimistic than

optimistic that Medicare will be able to provide health insurance toall Americans over the age of 65 in 20 years. Voters nationwide feelsimilarly, with 55% pessimistic and 43% optimistic.

Gallup says, "Interestingly, it is young adults within the swingstates who are most optimistic about Medicare's ability to provide

benefits 20 years in the future. OlderAmericans are much more likely to doubtthe program's long-term viability."

"By selecting Ryan as his runningmate, Romney may have hoped tocapitalize on Americans' concerns aboutMedicare by signaling that he supports aspecific approach to addressing theprogram's long-term stability. However, itappears that Romney's campaign has morework to do to communicate Ryan'sMedicare credentials to voters. Swing-state voters are more likely to believe

Obama and Biden have a plan to fix Medicare than to creditRomney and Ryan with this, and they are no more likely to sayRomney will strengthen Medicare."

The swing-state survey includes voters in Colorado, Florida,Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, NorthCarolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The movement thatcaptured the imaginationof the nation has now

officially broken into twofactions. One led by ArvindKejriwal firmly believes the thereis no option to achieving Lokpalbut to fight electoral battles. Theother faction led by Anna himselfwants to continue and remain anindependent anti-corruption,civil society movement.

A political party backed byAnna would have posed aformidable challenge to many ofthe existing parties. But Annaclearly lacked the motivation orthe wherewithal to take theplunge. So after months of dilly-dallying and flip-flopping, to theutter dismay of manyyoungsters, he decided that hedoes not want to be a part ofany political outfit whatsoever.Clearly, he is uncomfortablewith electoral politics, and whenit came down to it, he chose tofollow his heart which lies firmlyin social activism.

There is no question thatcivil society pressure groupswith no political leanings oraffiliations are a critical asset toany vibrant democracy. Butwhat sort of an un-affiliatedpressure group can Anna claimto have with the likes of saffron-clad Baba Ramdev, Kiran Bedi

Team Anna’s split and its aftermathwho is eager to work with the“less corrupt” and General V.K.Singh who has plenty ofpersonal scores to settle withthe current government, on hisnew team?

Social activism is acommitment to one or morecauses that can often spanseveral years and sometimes anentire lifetime. In the world ofsocial activism, unlike inelectoral politics, there are noimmediate wins and definitelyno losses. There are scores ofactivists who have showncommitment to several causesbut have never been able toachieve their goals.

The current generation ofactivists who look up toKejriwal and team are productsof the Internet age. As far asthey are concerned they havetried everything from “agitationto anshan” and have come awayempty handed.

The ruling party suffers aserious trust deficit (amongst along list of other shortcomings!)while the opposition inspires noconfidence whatsoever. In thesecircumstances these young anddynamic folks many of whomhave dedicated a better part ofthe last two years to this causehave a rather uncomplicatedview of things. They are

accustomed to and demandquick results. To them rampantcorruption is evident and so thegovernment should pass aLokpal bill. Its as simple as that.By forming a party, theirmessage is loud and clear thatif you won’t give us what wewant we will do whatever it takesto get it!

After two years of tirelessefforts by the UPA, theproverbial camel’s back hasfinally been broken. Ironically,in an anti-climax, when iteventually came about, itappears that it was more of avictory for the BJP than for theCongress.

There is little doubt that noparty is in favor of a Lokpal. Sowho benefits the most bykeeping the anti-corruptionstruggle alive? Clearly, the BJPbenefits by having a civilsociety group with no politicalambitions continue to drum upmass hysteria againstcorruption. Who is likely tosuffer if a new political outfitgained more momentum andusurped the true mantle of anti-corruption? Once again, its theBJP.

Who is bound to be furtherweakened by a continued anti-corruption campaign? Clearly, its the ruling UPA. So its in thebest interest of the BJP to doeverything in its power to unite

the opposition to thegovernment, sustain the anti-corruption movement and rideon the coattails of a relativelyharmless and somewhat naivecivil society group, to return topower. Anna’s worst nightmarewould be that his campaigneventually results in a BJPgovernment, and the likes ofKiran Bedi and General V.K.Singh pick up plum roles in aBJP administration while Lokpalis relegated to political roadkill.

The efforts of Kejriwal andcompany gives the muchmaligned middle-class a chanceto play an active role in thepolitical process. It gives themand anyone else who can seethrough the shallowness of thecurrent political parties, anopportunity to make a freshstart, independent of a saffronhue or the baggage of a politicaldynasty.

The middle class inparticular has always wantedsomeone else to fight theirbattles for them. Today, theyhave someone in Kejriwal andhis team. It is up to the middleclass to step up and fuel theirsuccess or quit complaining andlive with what the saffronbrigade, the Gandhis, theMayawatis, the Karunandhis, the Mulayams, and their kithand kin dish out for them in thedecades to come.

Baird backtracks onIndia trip comments

As you know, I recentlymade my first bilateralvisit to India. On a

professional level, it providedme valuable insight into thepotential of the Canada-Indiarelationship in a number of areasvital to our long-term successand prosperity.

The visit also broughthome for me personally theextent to which our twocountries’ growing relationshipis built upon a strongfoundation of shared values. This values-based andprincipled partnership wasreinforced in meeting after

meeting. I think this is, in nosmall measure, because bothour countries have embracedpluralistic and democratictraditions.

Indeed, our governmentrecognizes the many importantcontributions of Canadians ofIndian heritage, including ourvibrant and diverse Sikhcommunity. For over 100 years,

Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird inan open letter says he didn't mention Sikhsor any group in addressing global terrorism

Canadians of Sikh faith haveworked hard and contributed toour country in all fields, including through militaryservice. That the Sikh communityhas preserved, grown, andsucceeded despite thechallenges the community facedis a testament to the strength anddetermination of men and womenof Sikh background acrossCanada. I would note, inparticular, the contributions topublic life of Parliamentarians ofSikh heritage, including theHonourable Tim Uppal, appointed to Cabinet by PrimeMinister Stephen Harper in May

2011. Prime Minister Harper, theCabinet and indeed allCanadians benefit from his manytalents and consideredperspectives.

Returning to my trip, mydealings with the Indiangovernment made very clear thatboth our countries arecommitted partners in the globalfight against terrorism.

A commercial aircraft is a very safe mode of travel. If youconsider the deaths per billion kilometers, air travel is by farthe safest mode. The picture changes a little if you consider

deaths per billion hours, and becomes still worse for air travel whenyou look at the statistics of deaths per billion journeys. But for allpractical purposes, air travel is today regarded as very, very safe.

Yet, there are plenty of people who fear flying. Airsafe.com,which by the way is no enemy of airlines, says a study done in 1980by two Boeing researchers found that more than 30% of adultAmericans were afraid to fly. It says that Newsweek magazine in1999 found that 50% of the adults surveyed who flew on commercialairlines were frightened at least sometimes.

Airsafe.com goes on to say: “Often, the aviation safety expertspoint to the statistics associated with flying risk to show how flyingis safe and that passengers should not be afraid. For most who haveanxieties associated with flying, these statistics are meaninglessbecause in most cases, the fear is not associated with flight risks. Inother words, risk and safety are two different things, and you can'tuse risk statistics to convince someone that flying is safe. Even ifthe chance of something bad happening is a million to one, mostpeople are worried about whether their flight is going the be the onethat doesn't end well.”

The fact is, almost everyone who flies feels nervous when theaircraft runs into turbulence, and even seasoned flyers have theirhearts in their mouths every time a turbulence becomes severe orthe aircraft gets into an air pocket. Those of you who watch thecomedy TV series The Big Bang Theory will know Howard Wolowitz, the aerospace engineer who got this amazing opportunity to go tothe international space station, but wished till the last moment thatthe trip would be scuttled and he would remain safely on earth.

Flyers feel nervous and frightened because they know that ifsomething were to go wrong, it is almost certain death. They haveno control. And there is no escape. Just the frightening wait for theinevitable. It’s exactly the same with nuclear power.

Nuclear experts have been telling us ad nauseum that nuclearpower plants are amazingly safe and the chances of somethingserious happening are remote. But the fact is, just as airline accidentshappen, so do nuclear accidents, and there have been severalinstances in history of nuclear catastrophes and near-catastrophes.And when an accident happens, those who live in and around ithave no control and no escape. And the effects of it last for years, and in places that could be hundreds of kilometers away. In Nagasakiand Hiroshima, official research showed that the main rise in mosttypes of cancer and non-cancer diseases only became apparentyears after the atomic bombs fell. The deaths from Chernobyl arevariously estimated between 4,000 and 1 million. The Guardian, UK,wrote in 2010 that specialist doctors in Belarus and Ukraine, placesthat are hundreds of kilometers from Chernobyl, were convinced

Nuclear power’s safety argument will not workthat they were seeing unusual rates of cancers, mutations and blooddiseases linked to the Chernobyl nuclear accident 24 years prior tothat.

This frightening history, which is available to anyone with aninternet connection today, is why no amount of safety statisticsabout nuclear power will convince those who live around the plant. And this is why country after country is phasing out nuclear powerplants or resolving not to build any new ones. Here are someinteresting statistics I found on Wikipedia. Austria was the firstcountry to begin a phase-out (in 1978) and was followed by Sweden,Italy, Belgium and Germany. Austria and Spain have enacted lawsnot to build new nuclear power stations. Following the March 2011Fukushima nuclear disaster, Germany has permanently shut downeight of its reactors and pledged to close the rest by 2022. Mexicohas sidelined construction of ten reactors in favour of developingnatural-gas-fired plants. Belgium is considering phasing out itsnuclear plants, perhaps as early as 2015. Wikipedia says the Italianshave voted overwhelmingly to keep their country non-nuclear.Switzerland has banned the construction of new reactors. Othercountries that remain opposed to nuclear power include Australia,Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein,Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand andNorway. On Friday, in an announcement that went largely unnoticedin the Indian media, Japan's government (Japan has been the thirdbiggest user of nuclear energy in the world) said it intends to stopusing nuclear power by the 2030s. The decision marks a major shiftfrom policy goals set before last year's Fukushima disaster that soughtto increase the share of atomic energy to more than half of thecountry’s power supply.

Which is why it’s so ridiculous to paint the Kudankulam agitationas being misguided and as the handiwork of foreign-funded NGOs.In almost every country that decided to end its dependence onnuclear power, the decision was the result of agitations by its peopleagainst a source of energy that is dangerous to people’s lives.Imagine living in a place where every burst of a cracker or anirresponsible tweet could cause panic. If India continues to buildnuclear plants, my guess is it will be made possible only throughstate brutality. The TOI last week quoted Amnesty InternationalIndia’s chief executive G Ananthapadmanabhan as saying aboutthe Kudankulam actions: “Police apparently continued beatingprotestors on September 11 and 12 at Idinthakarai, when they alsoburnt boats and motorcycles belonging to the fishing community, took over several houses and looted property, including food andutensils.” I started this blog with air travel. But there’s also a bigdistinction between air travel and nuclear power. For many kinds oftravel, there is no alternative to air travel. But that’s not the casewith nuclear power. Nuclear power has plenty of alternatives thatpose no risk to human life and livelihood, which is why numerouscountries have been able to decide against nuclear power.

LONDON/BUREAU NEWS: Ina huge relief for some 350Indian students of the LondonMetropolitan University, asalso to hundreds of otherscholars from non-EUcountries, the high court ofEngland and Wales acting onthe university's application forinterim relief allowed them tocontinue their studies whilealso allowing LMU authoritiesto challenge the recentrevocation of i ts l icense toadmit non-EU students.

LMU had moved the courtseeking a reversal of a banimposed on it by the UnitedKingdom Border Agency(UKBA) - a division of theBritish home office - to admitand teach students fromoutside the EU, includingIndia. Indian students withvalid visas were affected bythe ban; and faced deportationif they couldn't find places atalternative universities.

The vice-chancel lor,Professor Malcolm Gillies, saidUKBA's decision was basedon "a highly flawed report bythe UKBA". The UK'sNational Union of Studentsmay give evidence at theensuing hearing, outlining thecase has huge implications forinternational students comingto Bri ta in . Lawyersrepresent ing the universi tywhile applying for the ban tobe lifted have appealed for ajudicial review of the matter. The universi ty claims theUKBA ban could cost it up to

Reprieve for Indian studentsin UK varsity crisis£30 million in income per year. The UKBA has insisted thedecision to revoke do Met'ssponsor licence was correct.

A task force set up by theBri t ish government is

It has alsoset aside a fund of £2 millionto ensure these as wel l asstudents of other nationalitiesdo not suffer any financiallosses as a resul t of therestr ic t ions imposed onLondon Met by UKBA. Indiahas, in fact , been at theforefront of pressurizingBri t ish authori t ies onprotect ing the interests ofgenuine s tudents . Theproactive role played by theIndian high commission inLondon in this respect hasfetched dividends. A

diplomatic source said theIndian mission was the first toforcefully take up the matterwith the British government, together with sending adiplomat to London Met to

ascertain the facts. Followingsuch moves, representativesof UK Universities and UKBAcame scurrying to the highcommission to assure it thatbona fide Indian students willnot endure any inconvenienceand announce the £2 millionassistance package. It was alsoat such meet ings that thefigure of around 350 Indianstudents facing turmoil wasadmitted by UKBA; and the 60day deadline earlier given tothem to register with otheruniversi t ies extended. I t isrel iably learned the Indianhigh commission expressedconcern to the UK

government , including theforeign off ice, that Indianstudents were beingdiscr iminated against ascompared to theircounterparts f rom theEuropean Union. I t isunderstood India did nots tand up for those whosevisas had either expired orwere not valid for the purposeof enrolment at LondonMetropolitan University. Lastmonth the UKBA withdrewthe universi ty 's "highlytrusted status" which entitledit to sponsor students for UKvisas in a crackdown onalleged abuse of the studentvisa system. Apparently, aninvestigation had discoveredthat London Met was notmaking proper checks onstudents.

UKBA said the universityhad failed to address "seriousfai l ings" which had beenpointed out more than s ixmonths ago.

In a survey of 101students , more than one-fourth had no permission to bein the UK. Another checkrevealed a significant numberof s tudents did not speakgood enough English to begranted a s tudent visa .Besides, the at tendancerecords of many were foundwanting. About 2,600 peoplehitherto admitted as non-EUstudents at London Met couldbe evicted from Britain if theydo not get admissionelsewhere.

The poll reveals that whengiven the option to retire earlierthan planned but give up theircurrent lifestyle and live moremodestly in retirement, only 25per cent of Canadians betweenages 50 and 59 would take theoffer. About 57 per cent said theywould rather "work longer andlive better" in retirement, andwould not give up their currentlifestyle (Another 18 per centwere undecided). 24 per cent ofCanada's 50-59 year olds say theyplan to carry debt into retirement.Of this group, the vast majority(80 per cent) say they will carrysome debt throughout retirement, suggesting they have noimmediate plans to pay off theiroutstanding debt Regionally, 50-somethings in Manitoba/Saskatchewan were most likely(67 per cent) to say they wouldprefer to work longer .

OTTAWA/BUREAU NEWS:According to statistics releasedtoday by The Canadian RealEstate Association (CREA),national resale housing activitydropped sharply from July toAugust 2012.

The number of home salesprocessed through the MLS®Systems of real estate Boardsand Associations in Canada fell5.8 per cent between July andAugust 2012, marking the largestmonth-over-month decline sinceJune 2010. Declines were reportedin about two-thirds of all localmarkets representing 80 per centof national activity, with monthlysales declines in almost all largeurban centres, including GreaterToronto, Greater Montreal,

Greater Vancouver, the FraserValley, Calgary, Edmonton, andOttawa. (Chart A) Actual (notseasonally adjusted) activitywas down 8.9 per cent in August2012 compared to the samemonth last year. This was thebiggest year-over-year dropsince April 2011.

"While we always cautionthat housing market trends at thenational level can and do runcounter to trends in many localmarkets, the decline in activityin August was definitely theresult of much of the countrymoving in the same direction,"said CREA President WayneMoen. "That said, many smallerand more affordable marketsbucked the national trend. As

always, all real estate is local, sobuyers and sellers should speakto their REALTOR® tounderstand how the housingmarket is shaping up where theylive." "August's sales figureswill no doubt provide comfort topolicymakers, providing the firstclear indication that the recentchanges to mortgage regulationsaimed at cooling the market areworking as intended," saidGregory Klump, CREA's ChiefEconomist. "With previouschanges to mortgageregulations, demand rosebetween the time changes wereannounced and theirimplementation, and invariablyfell in the months immediatelyafter being implemented, before

recovering to long-term levels.By contrast, recent changes tomortgage regulations were inforce more quickly after beingannounced, so home buyers hadfar less time to react. As a result, demand didn't pick up just beforethe changes took effect, whilesales declined once they did."

A total of 334,208 homeshave traded hands over CanadianMLS® Systems so far this year. This represents a 2.8 per centincrease compared to levelsreported over the first eightmonths of 2011, and a narrowingof the 4.5 per cent lead for year-to-date sales activity in July.

The number of newly listedhomes fell 1.7 per cent in Augustcompared to July. New supplywas down in just over half of alllocal markets in August, but the7.7 per cent month-over-monthdecrease in Greater Toronto byfar contributed most to thenational decline. With thedecline in sales activityoutstripping the decrease in newlistings, the national housingmarket was more balanced inAugust than it had been at anyother point in the past two years. The national sales-to-newlistings ratio, a measure of marketbalance, stood at 51 per cent inAugust 2012, down from 53.1 percent in July. Based on a sales-to-new listings ratio of between40 to 60 per cent, about two-thirds of all local markets were inbalanced market territory inAugust.

OTTAWA/BUREAU NEWS: TheGovernment of Canada welcomedthe findings of a report onimmigration backlogs by theStanding Committee onCitizenship and Immigration andtabled its response in Parliament.

“I think we can all agree thatbacklogs are unfair to applicants, harmful to Canada’s ability toattract the best and brightest fromaround the world, and hold backeconomic and job growth,” saidCitizenship, Immigration andMulticulturalism Minister JasonKenney. “I thank the StandingCommittee members for their hardwork in compiling their report.”The Committee commentedfavourably on what theGovernment has already achievedto date through the Action Planfor Faster Immigration and theAction Plan for Faster FamilyReunification. However, theCommittee report also made clearthat more needs to be done inorder to better align applicationintake with admission levels.

The committee reportrecognizes that backlogs haveoccurred because for too longCanada has accepted moreapplications than it can processand admit in a given year. Over time, this annual surplus of applicationsresulted in a backlog of more than amillion applicants, and processingdelays of eight to ten years in someimmigration categories. The reportconcluded that, in order to avoidfuture backlogs, it is critical that the

Canadian govt promises to do more to reduce visa application backlog

Government act to ensure that theannual number of applicationsbetter align with the number ofadmissions.

The report also recommendedexploring further options to deal withthe problem of existing backlogs, particularly in the federal skilledworker, immigrant investor, andparent and grandparent classes.

The Government agrees withall of the Standing Committee’sreport recommendations and hasalready acted quickly to tackleapplication backlogs in key areas.Successes include: Reducing thepre-2008 Federal Skilled Worker(FSW) backlog by more than 50percent by 2011 – two years earlierthan expected – through the 2008

Action Plan for Faster Immigrationand successive MinisterialInstructions limiting applicationintake. Most recently, EconomicAction Plan 2012 removed around280,000 applicants from that FSWbacklog, which paves the way for afaster and more flexible economicimmigration system; Managingintake of the Immigrant InvestorProgram applications starting inJuly 2011.

Most recently, a temporarypause on new applications wasintroduced on July 1, 2012 to allowCitizenship and Immigration Canada(CIC) to focus on processing existingapplications and reviewing theprogram’s effectiveness;Significantly decreasing the backlog

of applications for parents andgrandparents since fall 2011, as aresult of increased admissiontargets and a two-year pause onnew applications under the ActionPlan for Faster Family Reunification. At the same time, CIC introduced anew “Super Visa,” which allows forvisits of up to two years by parentsand grandparents, and has provento be a popular alternative forapplicants.

In the last year, theGovernment has also launchedpublic online consultations on re-designing the parent andgrandparent program, and reformingthe Immigrant Investor Program.Policy work on reformed programsis now underway.

The number of monthsof inventory represents thenumber of months it would taketo sell current inventories at thecurrent rate of sales activity, and is a further measure of thebalance between housingsupply and demand.

"The broadly based declinein August sales activitysuggests that some buyers mayno longer qualify for a mortgagenow that amortization periodsfor high ratio mortgages havebeen shortened," said Klump."As the lynchpin of thehousing market, lower first-time

While we expect itwill likely take more time formove-up buyers to sell theircurrent home, a few more monthsof data are needed to gauge thebroader impact of recentregulatory changes on Canada'shousing market."

The actual (not seasonallyadjusted) national average pricefor homes sold in August 2012was $350,192, up three-tenths ofone per cent from the samemonth last year.

The national average pricecontinues to be influenced bycompositional factors, mostnotably by fewer sales inVancouver this year compared tomuch stronger levels last year. The result has been adownwardly skewed nationalaverage price this year comparedto an upwardly skewed average

selling price last year.By way of example,

excluding just GreaterVancouver from the nationalaverage price calculation yieldsa year-over-year increase of 3.3per cent, reflecting the fact thataverage sale prices wereactually up year-on-year inthree-quarters of all localmarkets in August.

Unlike average price, theMLS® Home Price Index(MLS® HPI) is not affected bychanges in the mix of sales, providing the best gauge ofCanadian home price trends. The index tracks home pricetrends in five of Canada's mostactive housing markets, including Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Calgary,Greater Toronto, and Montreal. These five markets compriseapproximately 45 per cent of allhome sales activity in Canada.

Census data show thatmarried couples declined as aproportion of all census familiesbetween 2006 and 2011.Nevertheless, they still formedthe predominant family structurein Canada, accounting for two-thirds of all families.\ In contrast, the proportion of common-law

couples and lone-parent familiesboth increased. For the first time,common-law couplesoutnumbered lone-parentfamilies in 2011.

The number of same-sexmarried couples nearly tripledbetween 2006 and 2011,reflecting the first full five-yearperiod for which same-sexmarriage has been legal acrossthe country. The 2011 Census ofPopulation counted stepfamiliesfor the first time. Theyrepresented about one in eightcouple families with children.

Census data also show theevolving living arrangements ofchildren within Canadianfamilies. About two-thirds ofchildren aged 14 and under livedwith married parents in 2011,while an increasing share livedwith common-law parents.

For the first time, the censuscounted the number of childrenin stepfamilies and fosterchildren. Data showed 1 out ofevery 10 children aged 14 andunder in private householdslived in a stepfamily in 2011.Foster children aged 14 andunder represented 0.5% ofchildren in this age group inprivate households.

A higher share of seniorsaged 65 and over lived as part ofa couple in a private householdin 2011 compared with 2001.During the same period, theproportion of senior women wholived alone declined, while itremained relatively stable forsenior men. About 1 in every 12seniors lived in a collectivedwelling, such as a nursing homeor a residence for senior citizens.

Married couples still thepredominant family structure

The census counted9,389,700 census families in2011, up 5.5% from 2006. Ofthese, nearly 6,294,000 consistedof married couples, a 3.1%increase. The number ofcommon-law families increased

Married-couple familiesaccounted for 67.0% of allcensus families in 2011, downfrom 70.5% in 2001. Theproportion of common-lawfamilies increased from 13.8% to16.7%, while the share of lone-parent families rose from 15.7%to 16.3%.

As a share of all censusfamilies, common-law coupleswere highest in Nunavut (32.7%)and in Quebec (31.5%). Highshares were also found in theNorthwest Territories (28.7%)and Yukon (25.1%). Theseproportions were at least doublethe average of the otherprovinces (12.1%). Among lone-parent families, growth was morethan twice as strong between2006 and 2011 for male lone-parent families (+16.2%)compared with female lone-parent families (+6.0%). About 8in 10 lone-parent families werefemale lone-parent families.

Number of same-sexcouples continues to increase

The census counted 64,575same-sex couple families in 2011,up 42.4% from 2006. Of these,21,015 were same-sex marriedcouples and 43,560 were same-sex common-law couples. Same-sex couples accounted for 0.8%of all couples in 2011.

TORONTO/BUREAU NEWS:The Canadian economy isstuck in neutral, dragged downby debt-laden households anddeficit-fighting governments,Toronto-Dominion Bank said inits quarterly forecast releasedtoday. "Canada’s economy isstuck in a soft patch," thebank's report said. "Fatiguedhouseholds and debt-ladengovernments have recentlybeen shifting their attention torestraint. Meanwhile, a weakglobal environment and anelevated exchange rate areweighing on the export sector."

The report states that whileexports and businessinvestment had appearedpoised to do more heavy liftingthis year, this transition hasbeen delayed by ongoingglobal uncertainty, an elevatedexchange rate and softeningcommodity markets. With noengine firing on all cylinders, economic growth is being heldto a meek sub-2% rate and thejobless rate is stuck above 7%.By early 2013, we suspect that

global headwinds will havedissipated enough to spurstronger Canadian exports andentice cash-flush busi- nessesto loosen their purse strings –pulling real GDP growth backabove 2% and pushing thejobless rate down modestly. This shift to more balancedgrowth will be a major step for-ward in ensuring sustainableeconomic growth in Canada."

Households andgovernments focus on debtcontrol Over the past decade, the government and householdsector have pulled theCanadian economy along by itscoat- tails. In 2011, these twosectors accounted for acombined 90% of GDP. Whilethe strong contribution fromdomestic demand through thefinancial crisis and recoveryhas given Canada thereputation as a top performeramong its G7 peers, theeconomy is now left with a debtoverhang and an overbuilt, overpriced housing market. At152% of personal disposableincome, household debt hassurged to a record level and isnot far off the 160% level thatwas reached in the U.S. andU.K. just prior to their economiccrises. While the combined

Canada's economy'at a crossroads' :

TD reportfederal-provincial netgovernment debt-to-GDP ratioremains considerably lowerthan it did at its peak in the1990s, it has risen significantlyin recent years, especially atthe provincial level. In light ofpressures to ease debt burdensand grow spending more in linewith gains in income and/orrevenue, the contribution toreal GDP from consumer andgovern- ment spendingdeclined notably during thefirst half of 2012. With theEuropean financial crisis in thespotlight, Canadiangovernments have recognizedthe importance of getting theirbooks in order, and as a result, have been committed tospending restraint. Based onthe most recent informationcontained in 2012 budget plansand updates, governmentrestraint in the form ofspending reductions and taxincreases is likely to exert a dragon real GDP growth over thenext few years.

The path towards a more

sustainable household debtratio is likely to be less painful, but a challenge nonethe- less.Over the past year, Canadianhouseholds have begun thelong process of reining in theirborrowing growth. Still, evenwith this moderation, combinedgrowth in mortgage andconsumer debt has continuedto outstrip that of income. Ourbet is that this adjustmentcontinues in the coming quar-ters, helping to arrest theupward trend in the debt ratio, but limiting real consumerspending to a sub-par pace. Aswe discuss in the next section, some cooling off in formerly-red- hot housing markets is alsoexpected to weigh on consum-ers’ appetite for more credit andspending over the forecastperiod. On the positive side, therequired adjustment tohousehold balance sheets isalso expected to be facilitatedby prospects for moderateemployment and income gains.

As households opt less fordebt-financed big ticketpurchases over the near term, they will likely need to shell outmore of their income on food inthe wake of the severedroughts in the U.S. and spikein crop prices.

As earlier reported, the thenArmy and IAF chiefs, General VP Malik and Air Chief MarshalA Y Tipnis, squabbled with eachother over the conduct ofoperations. ACMTipnis went on record to retortthat an "embarrassed" Armywas initially reluctant "to revealthe full gravity" of the situation, arising from the presence ofPakistani intruders in the Kargilheights, to the government. On the anvil isIndian offer of sell inglocomotives to Pakistan, layinga gas pipeline through Attari, formation of joint businesscouncils, reduction in sensitivelist, daily air connectivitybetween the two capitalsbesides granting the awaited"most favoured nation" statusto India. These decisions weretaken during the 7th round ofIndia-Pakistan talks oncommercial and economiccooperation held betweenIndian commerce secretary S RRao and his Pakistani

He said Pakistan hadagreed that by the end ofOctober, it would dismantlethe negative list of goodswhich would pave way forboth India and Pakistan totrade in substantial number ofgoods. This would however stillbe barring about 1,200 goodwhich Pakistan still has on its"sensitive list". Rao said Indiahad agreed to reduce itssensitive list by 30% byDecember and after Pakistandismantles its negative list Indiawould also reduce negative list

to about 100 lines."Simultaneously, Pakistan willalso notify their five-year

programme of

CHANDIGARH/BUREAU NEWS: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) presidentSukhbir Singh Badal met Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadavin New Delhi on Saturday to discuss a common strategy to opposegovernment move to allow FDI in retail. The meeting has triggeredspeculations of an attempt at forming a third front and Mulayam isbelieved to have urged Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for agreater role in national politics. Badal Senior had, earlier this year, refusedto be considered for the post of vice president for which his name wasdoing the rounds in NDA. Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, a former Unionminister who joined SAD just before the recent assembly elections, mediated the meeting. Ramoowalia said: "Mulayam Singh Yadav'sassociation with the Badals is old as Parkash Singh Badal was a closeassociate of Chaudhury Charan Singh. Since Badal had played a criticalrole in opposing the Emergency imposed in the country, besides headingone of the oldest parties of the country for several decades, MulayamSingh sought his greater role at the front of national politics."Ramoowalia said the SP supremo sought SAD's support in opposingFDI. Mulayam had courted arrest against UPA's decision during thebharat bandh but has pledged to support the government. "There wasno talk about SP withdrawing support to UPA. The party is opposingFDI just as we are opposing the decision. Mulayam Singh only soughtsupport for opposing FDI," said Ramoowalia, adding SAD's joininghands with SP over opposing FDI should not be taken as the twoparties agreeing on a political alliance of any kind.

WASHINGTON/BUREAUNEWS: Pakistan's savvy andstriking foreign minister HinaRabbani Khar arrived here onWednesday to restore hercountry's battered image andkiss and make up with the UnitedStates even as some Americanlawmakers pressed for punitivemeasures to reprimandIslamabad for its continued tiesto terrorists and betraying theUS. Even though Pakistanremains under the gun followingthe designation of its Haqqaniproxies as a global terroristgroup and its patronage ofextremists groups, includingthose making a bonfire of USinterests, the two sides haveretrieved some ground from dayswhen ties reached a nadir andIslamabad cut off Nato supplylines following the Salala attackthat killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.Pakistan reversed the decisionseveral months down the line, and in recent weeks, it has beenrewarded with nearly $ 2 billionin Coalition Support Fund backpayments, enabling its economyto hold off a meltdown.

Rabbani's trip to the US, tobe followed by visits by PresidentZardari and the de facto ruler, superannuated militarystrongman Pervez AshfaqKayani in the next few weeks, isexpected to build on that as thetwo sides attempt to restore asemblance of normalcy.Describing it as a "a long-expected visit," a statedepartment official said Khar andUS Secretary of State HillaryClinton will cover the "full range

of issues we have withPakistan...including ourcontinuing effort to get ourcounterterrorism activities backup and running fully."

The official put a positivespin on the meeting, tellingcorrespondents that SecretaryClinton and Khar "have had avery strong relationship" and thisis going to be at least their fourthmeeting, "They have both rolledup their sleeves to try to stabilizeand strengthen the relationship, and I think this is a goodopportunity, obviously, for themto take stock of where we are andcontinue to try to move forward,"State Department spokespersonVictoria Nuland said. But there isless enthusiasm on the Hilldespite Pakistan's attempt to geeup some support by convening ameeting last week of the 50-member Pakistani-Americancaucus, it's first in some fiveyears. While many lawmakers areloath to be associated with thecountry indelibly linked withterrorism, some of them have beenpersistently demanding that it bepunished for continually workingagainst American interests, something U.S governmentofficials prefer to gloss over tomaintain a semblance of arelationship. Lawmakers areparticularly upset over Pakistan'sincarceration of a doctor whoassisted the CIA in eliminatingOsama bin Laden.

Last week, CongressmanTed Poe introduced a bill in theHouse aimed at divestingPakistan of the major non-NATOally (MNNA) status.

LIVING ROOM

Usually a living room or hall is the first room one noticeson entering a home and must, therefore, be the mostcomfortable and relaxing zone in your house.

-Arrange your furniture in such a way that one can easilymove around without tripping.

-If you have a fairly large hall, then designate separate areasor zones for various activities like dining, lounging, reading andwatching television.

-If your hall is small, then opt for a multi-functionalarrangement by placing the seating or the dining zone in frontof or near to the entertainment or television area.

-Decorative screens, flooring, rugs and even art-work playan important role in defining the zones in the living room.

- A wall can be made the focal point of the living room. Thiscan be done by adding interesting accent pieces like paintingsand photographs.

HOW ABOUT A SPLASH OFBLACK IN YOUR HOME?Black is indisputably the

colour that spells suavestyle and sophistication.

But does it really work that wellwhen you pull it out of thesartorial confines, into the wallsand upholstery of your homes?

Most interior designers anddecorators state tha t b lackdoes make a statement but ithas its own drawbacks too.The colour has the quality tomake things look smaller thanthey are and that is why it ishuge ly popula r among thewel l -endowed men andwomen. They bank upon thisdark colour to indiscreet lytake away a few pounds offthem! And this is just whatb lack does even to yourhome. It tends to make it looksmaller.

Des igner Krsna Mehtasays, "I prefer charcoal to thebasic black. Charcoal wal llooks great and so does deepgray. Abso lu te dark b lackmay not work well for walls. But black accents can changethe look of any room." Headvises that when a room hascharcoa l wa l l s , then thefurniture could be fuschia orteal or an oatmeal or cement-coloured upholstery.

Interior designer MohitNissa r adds tha t l igh t ingplays an important role in ahome, where the decor i sp redominan t ly b lack . When it is the livingroom tha t we a re t a lk ingabout , cush ions , cur ta ins ,rugs of bright colours go verywell.

A bedroom shoulda lways have some warmelements, so it 's best not tohave black and white as theonly colours in the bedroom.A fuschia carpet or rug canlook great on a glossy blackt i l ed f loor. Ac t ress KoenaMitra has used black for herhome with a lot of red.

Dec iding to use colouraccents like a red or a white etc,in your room can help. Whenthe bedroom is black you canuse this colour for decorativeitems such as throw pillows, oras source of contrast on acolour accent wall.

Young singer-actor AdityaNarayan is a hardcore black fan."I have been obsessed withthis colour since my teenagedays and had always wanted touse it in my home. Now almostthe entire decor at my house isdone up in this colour. Idesigned my house all bymyself and every little thing inmy home has been hand-pickedby me." The talented youngman has two black cars andhas already booked a third oneof the same colour! Though likemany other youngsters he loves

the bright sunny and windyoutdoors; when it comes tointeriors he wants everything tobe dark. He says, "I don't like itto be too bright. Here I am writingsongs, singing, listening tomusic, watching TV or sleeping,so I like it to be muted and dark. Some may call it bizarre but I loveit." Using black and its shadescan be tricky but you canincorporate it all in nicely whenyou use accents. So go aheadand get blacked out!

Dina Lohan admitsshe made a

mistake lettingLiLo be a child star Lindsay Lohan's mother Dina has admitted she regretspushing her star daughter into show business as a child. TheMean Girls actress could face the full force of the law againafter being arrested on September 19 for allegedly hitting aman's leg with a borrowed Porsche - the latest in a long lineof incidents involving the 26-year-old. "I was born into thebusiness," she told the New York Daily News. "My motherwas an entertainer. It was natural."But yes, in the next life, Imight not do it.' Dina conceded she is far from proud of herdaughter's multiple arrests and unpredictable antics, butrefused to shoulder any of the blame. "I'm certainly notmaking excuses for Lindsay's behaviour. But she's a 26-year-old woman," she said.

SOCIETIES HESITANTTO RENT A PLACE TOADULT STAR SUNNY

Heard Sunny Leone, who has definite plans to pursue a career as an actor in Bollywood, has yet to find her dreamhome in Mumbai.

Our source told us that Sunny and her husband Daniel Weber(who also helps her in writing and creating their own brand of adultmovies) are seri-ously hunting foran apar tment inthe suburbs.Daniel has also re-ceived a few offersfrom Bollywoodand now, thecouple is ready tocough up a heftyamount for arented apartmentin maximum city. However, they have been unsuccessful in finding aplace. Said our source, "Sunny wants to move out of the hotel where she isstaying. The adult-film star couple who is currently quite hot inBollywood has got a couple of top estate agents trying to helpthem find a place. And though the hunt has been going on forweeks, Sunny still hasn't found an apar tment because manysuburban housing societies are reportedly hesitant to rent out aplace to an adult-film actor."TO LOOK GOOD, BROOK SHOWSOFF HER WAIST, LEGS

Actress Kelly Brook says she is aware of her curvy figure and prefers wearing clothes thathighlight her waist and legs. "As a curvy girl, I have to show off my waist and legs, otherwise I'd look like a balloon," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Brook as saying. "The 1950s fit

and flare frocks are so flattering and you can add a belt to nip in your waist," she said. Brook, who isdating former Scottish rugby player Thom Evans, was last seen in director Paul Angunawela'scomedy "Keith Lemon: The Film".

Angelina Jolie 'angryover Oscar ridicule'Angelina Jolie is reportedly furious at being mocked for her outrageous posing

at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. The 36-year-old actress lookedravishing in the black velvet Atelier Versace gown with a thigh-high slit shewore to the prestigious ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles but

her strange pose of sticking out her right leg has been the subject of much ridicule.According to the Chicago Sun Times, after 'The Descendants' writer Jim Rash mimicked

her stance as he took to the stage to collect the Oscar for best adapted screenplay, Joliewas heard snapping ''Who is that guy?''

"She was still pretty steamed but seemed to calm down quickly," Contactmusicquoted a source as saying.

The 'Lara Croft' star's puzzling behaviour also resulted in a twitter page being set up,called AngiesRightLeg.

Tweets from the spoof account which has over 30,000 followers include "Great meetingmost of you for the first time last night at the Oscars!!" and "Left leg and I talked -everything's cool. Next Oscars, she gets the slit."

Without superstars also films do well: Om Puri

Seasoned actor Om Puri feels that character actors are notgetting their due and says that the Indian films need them justto enhance the role of the main protagonist.

"It is very rare that character actors get a meaty part. They are thereas a character to enhance the hero. They don't have their ownindividuality," he told IANS in an exclusive interview. The veteran, known for his powerful performances in offbeat filmsof the 1970s and the 1980s such as "Godhuli", "Bhumika","Aakrosh", "Mandi", "Party" and "Mirch Masala", ventured intolight-hearted roles with "Chachi 420" and later tickled the funnybones of the audiences with comedies like "Hera Pheri" and"Malamaal Weekly". But now the 61-year-old enjoys satires muchmore than mindless comedies."I don't enjoy comedy for comedy's sake. I enjoyed 'Malamaal Weekly'as it was innocent and harmless fun. Whereas films like 'BuddhaMar Gaya' are disgusting. That kind of humour is low and cheap.'Chachi 420' was clean, even though it didn't have a message. Ienjoyed 'Bollywood Calling' as well. But I prefer satire," said OmPuri, winner of National Awards for best actor for "Arohan" and"Ardh Satya".He believes that Bollywood is in dire need of good actors and notjust superstars."Without superstars also films do well. 'Vicky Donor' ran withoutany big stars or known faces," he said. His next is Priyadarshan's "Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal", coming out Sep 28, and he said: "Wehad fun on the set. Nana Patekar is a wonderful entertainer. I amworking with him after 30 years. When I worked with him earlier, he

was not a brat and now he is a brat." Talking about his role, headded, "Shreyas Talpade is the protagonist of the film. I am playinghis father. He doesn't have comic scenes. He is an angry old man whois disgusted with his son." With so many newcomers entering theindustry, Puri feels that it is the responsibility of senior actors to mentorthem. "If someone is a good actor, you can make it out the minute hespeaks two lines. Even if he is not so good, it is the responsibility ofsenior actors to coach him because he is in the cast. Making commentson him (a newcomer) is a negative attitude," he said. What is on his wish list?"I am not getting any social films. I am looking for them," he said addingthat he is, however, "happy with the films I am doing right now".

COLOMBO/BUREAU NEWS:The Aussies were battered by astrong Windies batting lineup onSaturday night at the Premadasa, but a quickfire start to theirinnings, coupled with generoushelp from the rain gods, ensuredthat they won a game whichpromised much but was marredby the weather.

In the first big ticket matchof the WorldTwenty20 at thisvenue, the Windies chose to batfirst. They were propped up byhalf-centuries from Chris Gayle, who was perhaps responsible fora surprisingly large turnout here,

T20 WC: Australia beatWindies by 17 run

SHANE WATSON STARRED AGAIN WITH BAT AND BALL.

and Marlon Samuels. Along withsome other useful cameos, theWindies reached 191 for eight.Sadly, it didn't prove enough.

The Kangaroos scrapedthrough by 17 runs, as per theD/L method. When the raincame, the Aussies were 100 forone in 9.1 overs. They needed toscore 83 by that stage to win.

The Oz needed 92 off 65balls when the showers arrived ,with nine wickets in hand. It wasbuilding into a thriller, but wascruelly cut short. The Windies, though, need to blamethemselves for this defeat.

As much as they impressedwith the bat, the Caribbeanslooked flat with the ball, withDavid Warner and ShaneWatson tearing into them rightaway. Warner carted 28 (14b; 3x4,2x6), while Watson was again thestar of the show, taking twowickets, including that of Gayleafter having dropped theJamaican earlier, and thenblasting an unbeaten 41 (24b,2x4, 3x6).

Watson had sizzled inAustralia's opening game againstIreland too, and his superb formbodes well for the Aussies going

into the Super Eights. Oz wiselysent Michael Hussey at No 3, andthe veteran batsman did well tomaintain the momentum , takingjust 19 deliveries to get to anunfinished 28 (3x4, 1x6).

A new T20 jersey, which hasa patch of blue thrown in amidthe red, gave the Windies adistinctly different look. It suitedtheir brand new, refreshingavatar as the tournamentfavourites too.

Earlier, they showed whyexactly are they the batting sideof this edition of theWorldTwenty20. They pack toomany guns at the moment, and ifall of the fire away reasonablywell, then even a strong side likeAustralia can be blown apart.

One can only symphathizewith young left-arm fast bowlerMitchell Starc, who lookeddisconsolate after his final ballof the innings was smashed overcovers by Sunil Narine for four.Starc had bowled well to pick upthree wickets, but had to go for35 runs off his four overs.

It was what happened afterGayle went that displayedWindies' batting might.Watson's ecstasy was short-lived after having Gayle caughtand bowled, as WI added 98 inthe 59 balls they faced after that.

GAURAV GUPTACOLOMBO/BUREAU NEWS: When MS Dhoni led India to the WorldTwenty20 in 2007, there weren't many senior players in the side, exceptmaybe Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh. Five years down the line, the Indian skipper has at his disposal a team boasting of a few moreexperienced campaigners. But that's precisely where India's problemsnow lie. The chief reason for 'Captain Cool' being left perplexed in thisedition of the World T20 is the form of the senior generals in the side. Hismost reputed fast bowler, Zaheer Khan, is bowling tripe these days, particular at the death. His opening pair of batsmen, one of the mostsuccessful opening combos of all time, is struggling to put together adecent start. Virender Sehwag is out of form and Gautam Gambhir isinconsistent. How long can Dhoni wait for a turnaround in their form? Ifhe does have to take a few tough calls, will it go down well in the dressingroom? On the eve of the Group A game against England, Dhoni firstdefended Zaheer by calling him the 'Sachin Tendulkar' of the Indianbowling attack. "It's easier to go after the bowler. If you look at hisperformance he should be given equal respect, as much as SachinTendulkar gets. He is the Sachin for us when it comes to the bowlingdepartment. He has led the attack for the past few years. "He has been ourbest bowler, whatever the format may be. Maybe in the last few games hehas not got wickets. We have a chance here to give him a few games, because we are at a point in the tournament where we can do that," hesaid. Dhoni's faith in the left-arm seamer isn't blind. "It depends on thetournament and the combination. If you are playing with four bowlersand a part-timer, one of the bowlers can have an off day," Dhoni said.

Virat Kohli, India's ray of hopeGAURAV GUPTA

C O L O M B O / B U R E A UNEWS: Earlier this week duringa warm-up game, India's T20World Cup hopes were nearly'smashed' when their bestbatsman, Virat Kohli, received abeamer from Pakistan fast bowlerMohammad Sami that wouldhave taken the batsman's headoff had it connected. Luckily forIndia, Kohli somehow managedto avoid getting hit. The very next

ball, this brightest jewel in theIndian batting crown showedwhat he is all about, slammingSami for a six over long off. Inthat game, Kohli played severalexquisite strokes, including a'straight hit' that nearly hit bowlerSohail Tanvir even as umpireNigel Llong was forced to takeevasive action. There was a sixover cover off Saeed Ajmal thattook one's breath away. Kohli'sunbeaten 75 off 47 balls in thatmatch, and his 50 off 39 ballsagainst Afghanistan — his third

consecutive fifty in T20 cricket —further drove home the point thathe is now the backbone of thebatting order. With the openersout of form and the bowlingappearing shaky, Kohli offers thebrightest ray of hope for Indiancricket. Kohli has become the firstIndian batsman to hit three fiftieson the trot in T20s. In ODIs, he hitan 86-ball, unbeaten 133 at Hobartagainst Sri Lanka, a knock whichformer Aussie batsman DeanJones felt was as good as Viv

Richards' epic, unforgettable 189.Kohli then smashed 183 againstPakistan: the highest internationalscore against them. In Tests, he won India a game atBangalore last month with scoresof 103 and 51 not out. Former Indiaskipper Dilip Vengsarkar, whointroduced Kohli to internationalcricket during his tenure as thechief selector, back in 2008 for anODI tour to Sri Lanka, is a proudman today, having seen his 'pick'come a long way now. "I feel gladseeing him now.

KOHLI HAS BECOME THE FIRST INDIAN BATSMAN TO HITTHREE FIFTIES ON THE TROT IN T20S.

Pakistan beatBangladesh to qualify

for Super Eights

PALLEKELE: Opener Imran Nazir produced the tournament'sfastest half-century as Pakistan stormed into the Super Eightsof the ICC World Twenty20 with a crushing eight-wicket victoryover Bangladesh on Tuesday. Needing a win to advance to thenext round, Pakistan rode on Nazir's 36-ball 72-run blisteringknock and his record 124-run opening stand with skipperMohammad Hafeez to chase the challenging 176-run target witheight balls to spare, in their final group league encounter.Nazir reached his fifty in just 25 deliveries, one quicker thanChris Gayle's 26-ball effort against Australia. In the crucialencounter, Bangladesh needed to win by a margin of at least 36runs, but their bowlers came a cropper in the face of Nazir'ssustained onslaught. During his belligerent knock, Nazir struckthree sixes and nine fours that left the Bangladeshis shell-shocked, as they had given themselves a chance by posting acompetitive total. Nazir was ably supported by Hafeez (45 off 47balls) as they produced the tournament's highest partnershipfor any wicket. The Pakistan show meant that Shakib Al Hasan'sbrilliant 54-ball 84 went in vain.Electing to bat, Bangladesh rode on Shakib's heroics and somefine contributions from opener Tamim Iqbal (24) and skipperMushfiqur Rahim (25) to post their highest score againstPakistan in T20 internationals. But their joy was short-lived as Pakistan's chase got off to aflying start with Nazir and Hafeez clobbering the Bangladeshbowlers all around the park.Nazir cashed in on a dropped chance in the second over andtreated the opposition bowlers with disdain to take his side to64 without loss at the end of the mandatory powerplay.Nazir, who was dropped by Abul Hassan at mid-on off medium-pacer Shafiul Islam, made Bangladesh pay a heavy price as hepicked Islam and Mashrafe Mortaza for a six each to keep theasking run-rate well under control.Nazir took the team score past 100-run mark with a four offMahmudullah in the 11th over as he left the opposition bowlersclueless with his clinical show.Rahim brought back medium-pacer Abul Hasan into the attackand the move immediately paid rich dividends as he removedNazir and Hafeez in the 14th over.

COLOMBO/BUREAU NEWS:The second one-day matchbetween New Zealand A andIndia A ended in a thrilling tiewhen bad light ended play twoovers early in Lincoln on Friday.

India were on 240-9 with twoovers remaining when play wasstopped and the Duckworth-Lewis method used in truncatedmatches was unable to separatethe sides. New Zealand's inningsof 249-9 had been underpinnedby a third-wicket partnership of149 between George Worker (61)and Neil Broom (82). The homeside's effort failed to catch fireeither side, with no other batsmansurpassing Derek de Boorder's25. Neil Wagner hit a quickfire 18off 11 balls to give his team adecent finish. Jaydev Unadkatwas the stand-out bowler for Indiawith 4-47 from his 10 overs. Indialooked to be coasting to victorywhen they found themselves 151-1 in the 32nd over with AbhinavMukund (66) and Naman Ojha

New Zealand and IndiaA teams play out tie

(62) going well. Mukund's run outthen saw wickets fall at regularintervals to bring the match backinto the balance.

Ambati Rayudu (46 not out)looked to have steadied the shipwith 13 needed off 21 balls and

Vinay Kumar lending him solidsupport in an eighth-wicket standof 34. Andy McKay (5-50) thenstruck with consecutivedeliveries to bring New Zealandright back into the game again.Unfortunately the match was

brought to a prematureconclusion soon after with bothteams feeling capable of gettingover the finishing line. The thirdand final one-day match will beplayed on Sunday with Indialeading 1-0 in the series.

COLOMBO: Harbhajan Singhwas the star of the show with 4-12 as India bowled out Englandfor a record low T20I score inColombo.

Old wounds were reopened

and old doubts were brought tothe fore as India teased, tormented and spun England toits doom at the R PremadasaStadium on a dramatic Sundaynight. This was to have been a

battle of heavyweights forbragging rights, if nothing else.Instead, it degenerated into ahorrible mismatch, as India usedspin as the weapon ofdestruction to romp to a

comprehensive andunforeseen 90-runtriumph.

Bogged down byself-doubt and theintangible pressure ofplaying a rank outsiderin its opening Group Aclash againstAfghanistan, Indiathus finished its leagueengagements in theICC World Twenty20on a high, and will gointo the Super Eightswith its confidencebolstered after elicitingh e a r t - w a r m i n gperformances fromRohit Sharma alongwith Harbhajan Singhand Piyush Chawla, thespin twins brought infor this game who took6-25 in eight overs.

Rohit had scoredhis first internationalhalf-century sinceMarch to propel Indiato 170-4, slightly morethan middling but farfrom intimidating. Lessthan halfway throughthe English chase, thattotal appearedpositively daunting asEngland dug a deephole for itself, itscontinued travailsagainst the turning ballexemplified by the vice-like grip exercised byHarbhajan's off-spinand Chawla's leg-spin.

England was shotout for just 80, itslowest Twenty20International total, andhumiliated as its defenceof the title won in 2010ran into an early

roadblock.Mahendra Singh Dhoni put

out a rejigged XI, restingVirender Sehwag, Zaheer Khanand R Ashwin and fielding fivespecialist bowlers. The new-lookunit responded admirably to thechallenge, particularly in thefield. Irfan Pathan, one of fewmen to open both the battingand the bowling in Twenty20Internationals, cleaned up AlexHales and Luke Wright in aninspired first spell marked byswing and accuracy, but withCraig Kieswetter firing on allcylinders, there was little hint ofthe collapse to follow.

Things began to happenimmediately after Harbhajan wasintroduced in the sixth over. Hestruck with his second deliveryon his comeback to the Indianteam - his last internationalouting was in August 2011– bydismissing Eoin Morgan, triggering an astonishingcollapse that saw England lose 8for 41, and that only becauseSteven Finn and Jade Dernbach, the last pair, put on 20.

Harbhajan finished with thebest figures by an Indian inTwenty20Is, 4-2-12-4, whileChawla, in his first game for Indiasince the ICC Cricket World Cup2011, was no less impressive with4-1-13-2. England's brave youngmiddle order was completelyclueless against the turning ball

- and truth to tell, it was neitherdiabolical nor over the top -something that England's SuperEight opponents including SriLanka will have taken note of.

India began breezily enoughthrough its new openingcombination of Pathan andGautam Gambhir, who looked inparticularly good touch early on.Pathan was cleaned up by Finn, but that signalled the classiestbatting phase of the match asVirat Kohli batted like a dream.

Kohli has been in glorioustouch for over a year now, batting not just with flair butwith the supreme authority thatcomes from loads of confidence. He began with a sparklingsquare-drive second ball, forcedStuart Broad on the up throughpoint a couple of deliveries later, and drew rapturous applausefrom a full house that wasdecidedly pro-India.

India smashed 52 off thePowerplay overs but strangely, there was no accelerationworth the name until the finalfour overs, when Rohit finallyshowcased the immensepotential he has alwayspossessed. Until Rohit uppedthe tempo, however, India'sinnings meandered along, wickets in handnotwithstanding. Kohli 'soccasional flashes of brillianceapart, the boundaries were few

and far between, runs comingthrough ones and twos even asEngland slipped a long wayfrom its usually high fieldingstandards.

Gambhir played well withinhimself while Kohli couldn't putaway Graeme Swann, easilyEngland's best bowler duringan unchanged four-over spell.Swann's off-spin wasn't exactlya foretaste of things to come, though at times he did get theball to turn sharply, and foundreward when Kohli tonked himdown deep mid-wicket's throat.

Kohli's dismay at havingthrown his hand away was alltoo obvious because of late, hehas made it a habit to build onstarts. He was the dominantpartner in a second-wicketstand of 57 with Gambhir, whose contribution was just 15,and though Gambhir didaccelerate upon Rohit's arrival,he didn't quite have the energyto cash in on Kieswettermissing a stumping off Swannwhen he was 26.

India had failed to kick onfrom 80-1 after 10, and looked tohave sold itself short when Rohitcame to its rescue. Without aninternational half-century forseven innings - which onlyyielded 18 runs - Rohit was underimmense pressure, but hecouldn't have chosen a bettertime to return to run-scoringways.

With Dhoni's guiding handfor support, Rohit was clearly inhis element. Crucially, he didn'ttry to attack from the off, playinghimself in, sussing up theconditions and then launching astunning assault towards theend that drove England todistraction. Between overs 17and 20, he alone smashed fourfours and a six. England, disciplined and pumped upagainst Afghanistan, wentcompletely off the boil, the firstindication that this wasn't goingto be its night.

Amongst the top six openingpai rs in te rms of runs ininternational cricket, this pairi s the only one to havemanaged a 50-plus average(52.69 in Tests and 51.74 inODIs). However, in the 18-month period since the 2011World Cup, the duo seems tohave los t the i r mojo . The

Delhi pair's opening averageof 54.90 has dropped to 50.32.And that seems to be hurtingIndian cricket big time. Samplethis: In 17 partnerships for thefirst wicket this year, Gambhirand Sehwag have aggregated379 at an average of 22.29,including two fifties. In thisper iod , Gambhir hasaggregated just 1044 runs in26 games @ 37.28 , whi leSehwag has been worse, with500 runs in 17 games @ 23.80.Gambhir at least has a coupleof fifties and seven hundredsagains t h i s name in th isphase, while Sehwag just hasa couple of f i f t ies to ta lkabout . They have been'consistently inconsistent.' Tomake mat te rs worse , therewere rumours that both wereembroiled in a rift with skipperMS Dhoni. On Monday, in the

warm-up game agains tPakistan, Gambhir managed10, whi le Sehwag, despi telooking good for a big score, managed jus t 26 . OnWednesday, Gambhir scored10 before playing on, whileSehwag, after getting beatennumerous times by left-armpacer Shapoor Zadran, wascaught behind off a beauty foreight. It might seem unfair tocrit icise such great playersafter just one game into thetournament, but, the fact is, itis high time they got back totheir best individually and as apair. Since the World Cuptriumph last year, Sehwag, 33,has hit just one hundred, whichwas the record 219 againstWest Indies in an ODI at Indore. His average in this period is alowly 31.25, while Gambhir's isslightly better at 33.68.
