The Benefits of Making a Year-End Gift of Stock If you own appreciated stock and want to support public television, it could make wonderful sense to make a stock gift to WTIU before December 31st.

Donating stock gives you the benefit of bigger tax breaks because you’re not subject to capital gains tax as you would be if you’d sold the stock after it increased in value.

The tax deduction you receive by giving appreciated assets or stock, is often more valuable than what you normally get with a cash gift.

Example of how donating stock can benefit you:

As part of her investment portfolio, Maria owns oil company stock bought in her name for $1,000 by her grandfather. The stock is now worth $5,000. Maria is not comfortable holding oil company stock, but is reluctant to pay capital gains taxes on the profits, should she sell it? At the same time, Maria is planning a charitable gift of an amount equal to the value of the stock.

Maria has three options for giving: 1 Sell the stock and donate the cash proceeds 2 Just give a cash donation 3 Give the stock itself Option 3 results in the lowest cost of giving. Maria receives a deduction for the full current value of the stock while avoiding tax on the capital gain. She saves taxes twice with her gift of stock.

Your year-end gift will help support the programs on WTIU that you enjoy year after year—and will continue to enjoy during the New Year of 2013.

To give a gift of stock for the benefit of WTIU, contact the IU Foundation Office of Gift Planning at (800) 558-8311, or call or e-mail Nancy Krueger at (812) 855-2935 or [email protected]. As always, we encourage you to consult your financial advisor or attorney.

Welcome ChristmasWednesday, December 19, 7 pm

Long a favorite from their appearances on the Minneapolis-based A Prairie Home Companion, chorus VocalEssence rings in the season with an all-new Welcome Christmas.

This year’s program puts the focus on old French carols, alongside two world premieres in the annual VocalEssence-American Composers Forum Christmas Carol Contest. The new carols call for the intriguing combination of men’s chorus with English horn.

It’s an hour of joyful holiday music featuring the ensemble that NEA Chairman Dana Gioia called “one of the irreplaceable music ensembles of our time.”

Join us for Christmas classics new and old as conductor Philip Brunelle and VocalEssence Welcome Christmas.

Peace on the BattlefieldSunday, December 23, 4 pm

From Peace Talks Radio, two instances when peace broke out—right on the field of battle. First, the impromptu but wide- spread unofficial Christmas Truce of 1914 in the early months of fighting in Europe in World War I, when soldiers from both sides laid down their arms on Christmas. We speak with historian Stanley Weintraub, author of Silent Night: The Christmas Truce of 1914.

Next, the story of the National Jubilee of Peace—the first major gathering of Civil War veterans from the North and South. It took place in 1911, fifty years after the Battle of Bull Run. Steve Pendlebury has the story from Manassas, Virginia, the place where it happened and was re-enacted in the summer of 2011. Paul Ingles hosts.

Philip Brunelle leads VocalEssence.

Every day, PBS and WTIU fulfill our essential mission to the American public, providing trusted programing that is uniquely different from commercial audiences. We treat audiences as citizens, not simply consumers. In fact, PBS has been rated as the most trustworthy institution among nationally-known organizations for nine consecutive years.

WTIU invites viewers to experience the worlds of science, history, nature and public affairs; hear diverse viewpoints; and take front-row seats to world-class drama and performances.

This month, WTIU will air a variety of specials chosen for you. Please make a pledge of financial support. If you’re a fan of WTIU, be sure to tell your family and friends that you support Public Broadcasting. Put it on your Facebook page or send out a tweet. Of course, you can do it the “old-fashioned” way by talking to someone either directly or over the phone.
