January20th2010markedtheone‐yearanniversaryofapresidencythatmanyhailedasanewerainourpoliticalhistory.Inmanyways,itwasthat.Theelectionofourcountry’sfirstAfricanAmericanpresidentwasawatershedmomentinthehistoryofourcountry,ourpeople,andoursociety.Asocietythatnottoolongagowasoncesodeeplyrootedinslavery,segregation,andracismthatitcouldnotfathomeventhepossibilityofanAfricanAmericanasthepresidentoftheUnitedStatesofaAmericaletalonethepossibilityofaneducated,articulate,andsuccessfulone.Yet,hereweareintheshadowofourcountry’scapitalwatchingandintentlywaitingforthispresidenttolead,tobringthevisionofourcountrytofruition,andtocastasidethepoliticalbickeringthathasmarredWashingtonfordecades.PresidentObamacameintoofficepromisinghealthcarereformbyAugustof2009,butasAugustbecameSeptemberandthenewdeadlinebyLaborDaypassedwithnomovementonhealthcare.ThatnextdeadlinebecameDecember2009,whichpassedjustasfallgavewaytowinter.Whathappened?PresidentObamadeferredtoCongresswhenourcountry,initsmostdireneed,demandedleadership—hisleadership.Thereisnodoubtthatsomeformofhealthcarereformmustpass,butwithoutresoluteleadershipfromtheexecutiveoffice,howcanwereformourhealthcaresystem?Themonstrositythathascomeoutthelegislativeprocessisnoreform.It’sbusiness‐as‐usual,withacatchiername. Onnationalsecurity,thispresidenthasdonenothing.HisexecutiveordermandatingtheclosingoftheGuantanamoBaydetentionfacilitybyJanuary2010hasstillnothappened.Rather,thispresidenthasfeltthatitwouldbesafertohousetheseenemycombatantsonAmericansoilinanarguablysimilarfacilitythatwillcostmore

taxpayerdollarstomaintain,whenwealreadyhaveafacilityinplacethatdoesnotaddanunnecessaryrisktoAmericancitizens—GuantanamoBay.Inaddition,thecrucialTransportationSecurityAgency(TSA)directorposthasformorethanayearbeenleftunmannedasourcountryfacesattacksonmultiplefronts,mostnotably,theattemptedChristmasDaybombingof2009.Onforeignpolicy,thispresidentcameintoofficewithamindsetofengagingtheworld’scruelest,tyrannical,andimmoralgovernments,inthehopeofbringingthemtothetable.Manyhailedthisasaradicaldeparturefromhispredecessor’sarguablyneo‐conservativeoutlook.Iranprovidestheperfectexampleofhowthispresident’sleadershipintheinternationalarenahasutterlyfailedandhasresultedinaperceivedweaknessinAmericanleadershipabroad.PresidentObamaengagedIranonmultiplefronts,butultimatelywewereleftchasingafteranillusionthatwouldnevercometofruition—Iran’sdismantlingofitsnuclear

6program.TherationalebehindthisengagementpolicywasthatifIranstalled,theinternationalcommunitywouldbepersuadedtoactinunisonwithus.PresidentObamaissuedtwodeadlines,oneforthespringandonefortheendof2009,andbothpassedwithoutanyprogress.Asthefirstdeadlineof2009passed,Irangavehintsthatitmightbewillingtocometothetable.Butthedeadlinepassedandinsteadofmakinggoodonourthreat

ofsanctions,wegaveIrananotherdeadlinetocomplywith.Iranhassincegonebackandforthprovidingclearlyinadequateresponses.Russia,whoblockedpreviouseffortstoenact

sanctions,hassincefollowedourleadalongwithGermany.ButnowChina,whohasastakeinIran’senergysector,hasblockedourabilitytoactbecauseitholdsvetopowerintheU.N.SecurityCouncil.WheredoesthisleaveAmericanforeignpolicytowardsIran?Nowhere.WehaveclearlywastedanentireyearwhileIrancontinuestoevadeinternationalpressurebecausePresidentObamawillnotandcannotact.TherewillbenonewpunitivesanctionsagainsttheIranianregimesolongasChinawieldsavetointheSecurityCouncil.Furthermore,ayear’sworthofengagementhasturnedupfruitless,withourcountryconcedingonmultiplefrontstotheRussianandChinesetowintheirsupport.Wemaynotallagreewiththispresident’spoliticalideology,butadifferenceinideologyisnotadifferenceinnationalunity.PresidentObamaisourpresidentwhetherwelikeitornot.Wearenotcalledupontorespecttheman,butrathertorespecttheoffice.Thetimehascomeforthispresidenttodecideifhewillcontinuetopandertopoliticalpartiesandforeignnations,ortaketheresponsibilityandtheburdenthatcanonlycomewithassumingthepresidencyinsuchatimeastheleaderofthefreeworld.Suchuncertaintimesnecessitateleadershiptothepointoffatality.Ourcountryneedsaleader,notapoliticalideology.Weneedaleaderwhois

notconcernedaboutreelection,pollingdata,andpoliticalpundits.Mr.President,youmustrealizethattherhetoricofyesterdaywilleventuallyandinevitablygivewaytotherealitiesofgoverningtoday,andthemannerinwhichyourespondtothechallengingtimesweliveinwillnotonlydefineyourpresidency,butitwilldefineourcountryandourworldforyearstocome.

Onewouldthinkthatifascientistisrevealedtohavepurposefullyfalsifiedhisresearchtocometoapre‐determinedtheorythathewouldbequestionedandthatthetheoryheproposedwouldbebroughtbacktothedrawingboardandre‐examined.Apparentlynot.Atleastnotwhenthistheoryinquestionisglobalwarming,whichhasservedastheplatformforenvironmentalistextremiststopasstheirradicalagendasforyears.Scientistswiththeseproblemsarenowgrowinginnumbers,whilethetheorystillremainsintheenvironmentalistmindsetassolid,provenfact.ItstartedpubliclyandonamassivescalewithAlGore(apolitician,notascientist),whomadehisbigjumpontothecenterstageoftheecomovementwithhisfilmAnInconvenientTruth,whichimmediatelywontheacclaimofliberalHollywood.UnfortunatelyforAlGore,whentheBritishMinistryofEducationtriedtomakehisfilmmandatoryinallschools,theQueen’shighestcourtcametotheconclusionthattherewereninefactsthatwereeitherseriouslymisquotedorexaggerated.Nottomentionthefactthejudgesaidthemoviewas“one‐sided”andalarmist.Nowtheymaysoundminiscule,buttheseninefactsserveasthebuildingblocksfortheentirethesisoftheGore’sfilm.Forexample,onemajor,fear‐strikingclaimwasthattheEarth’ssealevelswouldriseatadrasticrateverysoonandforcemassivemigration.Therealinconvenienttruthisthatthesealevelswouldbeslowlyrisingoverthenextseveralhundredyearsandthatthereisnorealevidenceindicatinganeedformass

migration.Anothermorepoliticallyorsociallypotentfalsityisthatduetothemeltingice,thepolarbearpopulationupnorthisshrinking.Again,inconvenientforMr.Gore,thestudyhecitedonlyfoundfourinstancesofpolarbearsdrowningandthatwasafteramajorstormhadupsettheiceregionstheyinhabited.Infact,thepolarbearpopulationisactuallygrowing.Their“endangeredspecies”statusisduetohuntingbyhumans,notdrowningbyglobalwarming.Mr.GorealsomadeastatementbeforeCongress(onthecoldestdayinD.C.inoveradecade)thatthewarmestyearonrecordwas2006.ThiscomesfromNASAtemperaturemeasurementswhich,afterbeingreviewedbyanoutsidemathematician,wereproventohavesomeseriouscalculationerrors.Inthereviseddataitwasproventhatthewarmestyearonrecordwasactually1934(longbeforemassiveindustrializationanduseoffossilfuels).ThenthereisClimategate.Inthiscase,scientistsattheUniversityofEastAnglia(UEA)wereinemailcommunicationregardingdatathatwasdisprovingorchallengingtheirstatedbeliefinglobalwarming.Nowwherethisallgoesbadiswhentheemails,whichspanfrom1994toNovember2009,showUEAscientistPhilJonesaskingcolleaguestodeletemessagescontaininginformationcontradictorytotheglobalwarmingtheoryandadmittingheconvincedUEAofficialstodenytheBritishFreedomofInformationActrequestsfortheirstudies(whichisacrimesinceUEAreceivespublicfunding).Luckyforthem,theBrownGovernmenthasshownnointerestinprosecutionandisstilltryingtopassclimatebillsbeforeitisoustedinelections.However,therealdeathblowtothetheoryofglobalwarmingistheflawedNobel‐Peace‐Prize‐winningreportfromtheUNIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange(IPCC).Thisreportisnowbeingtornapartduetothelargenumberofinaccuracies,misinformationandpoorscientificresearch.Andthisreportisstillbeingusedasthe

basisformanyclimatechangeinitiatives,includingthenowfailedCopenhagenConference.Dr.Pachauri,theIPCCchairman,hashadtomakeseveralstatementsabouterrorsfoundintheirreports,includingoneinwhichtheIPCCstatedthatmanyoftheworld’sglacierswillhavemeltedby2035—despiteresearchdonebytheIndianGovernmentintheHimalayasandworkdonebyGlaciologists.TheIPCC

reporthasnowbeenrevealedforhavingbasedthisclaimonacollegedissertation.PachaurihasdeniedallegationsthatheknewbeforetheCopenhagensummitwherehequotedtheIPCCreportonglacialmelting.Thefactisthatsomuchofthedatathatbacksthetheoryofglobalwarminghasbeendisproven,orisriddledwitherrors.Also,anincreasingnumberofscientistsarebeginningtoquestionthistheory,andevendenythatithasanylegitimacy.Withallofthisgrowingdoubt,thetheoryofman‐madeglobalwarmingshouldbereexamined.IleaveyouwithaquotefromJohnColeman,thefounderoftheWeatherChannelandatrainedmeteorologist,andoneoftheveryfewwhowouldopenlyquestionglobalwarming:"Itisthegreatestscaminhistory.Iamamazed,appalledandhighlyoffendedbyit.GlobalWarming—Itisascam.Somedastardlyscientistswithenvironmentalandpoliticalmotivesmanipulatedlong‐termscientificdatatocreateanillusionofrapidglobalwarming..."

300,000protestorsdescendedonWashington,D.C.onJanuary22ndtoprotestthedecisionofRoev.Wade,accordingtotheWashingtonPost.Buttheguestsofhonorwerethe41.5millionbabiesworldwidewhowerenevergivenachanceatlife.Despitethedismalweather,hundredsofthousandsofstudentsandadultsgatheredonthemuddyNationalMalltobethevoiceoftheunborn.Themassthatgatheredboresignswithevocativemessagessuchas“Faceit…abortion

kills”and“Aren’tyougladyourmotherdidn’thaveanabortion?”GWwasrepresentedattherallybystudentsfromCollegeRepublicans,ColonialsforLife,andtheNewmanCenter.Severalpro‐lifeadvocatesaddressedtheprotesters,

includingagroupofwomenwhoregrettedtheirabortions,MarchforLifeFundPresidentNellieGray,andRepresentativesMikePence,ToddAkin,JosephCao,GlennThompson,andChristopherSmith.The37thannualMarchforLifeEducationDefenseFundannouncedthatthenumberofmarchers“farexceededtherecordnumberofparticipantsthatattendedlastyear.”Theannouncementthatforthefirsttimethepro‐lifeideologywasthemajorityideologyamongpeopleintheUnitedStatesaccordingtoaUSATodaypollwasmetwithcheersfromthecrowd.Additionalstudiessupportthistrendtowardsanincreasinglypro‐lifesociety.2009markedthefirstdeclineinworldwideabortionestimatesinmoderntimes.TheCNNOpinionResearchCorporationPoll,agenerallyliberal

poll,acknowledgedthat61%ofAmericansopposeusingpublicfundsforabortionswhenwomencannotaffordone.AccordingtotheCBSNewsPoll,63%ofAmericansbelievethereshouldbestricterlimitsonabortionsortheyshouldbeoutlawed.Therecordpercentageofpro‐lifesupportersandtherecordattendanceatthemarchmarkthebeginningofaconservativeresurgence.Thisevidence,coupledwiththelossoftheNewJerseyandVirginiagubernatorialracesandtheMassachusettsSenateseat,hastheDemocratsworriedthattheirpoliticalactionsandideologiesaredisappointingtheAmericanpublic.Theincreasinglypopularpro‐lifeideologyindicatesthatpeopleareabandoningtheDemocraticplatformonsocialissues,inadditiontopoliticalandeconomicissues.ItwillbeinterestingtoseehowthisunprecedentedsupportfortheRepublicansocialplatformwillmanifestitselfinthe2010elections.

OnceuponatimeinAmerica,in“anhourofchangeandchallenge,inadecadeofhopeandfear,”ayoungpresidentstoodbeforehisnation,beforetheworld,anddeclared,“Wechoosethemoon.”46yearslater,Americaonceagainelectedanambitiousyoungleaderwithamessageofhopeandchange,whoralliedthepeoplewithhisshootforthemoonmentality.Exceptthesecondtimearounditdidn’tworkoutsowell.Therewasn’tevenatakeoff.ThegreatstateofMassachusettshasspoken,andtheCommonwealththatborethatyoungpresidentwhochosethemoonhasmadeitevermoreclear:ObamaisnoJFK.WhenAmericansdemanded“hopeandchange,”theywerenotcallingforastimuluspackagecompoundedwithporkbarrelspendinginfineWashingtontradition.Theywantedjobsfueledbyinnovation,revampingtheproductionof“Americanmade”,solidifyingAmerica’sroleontheforefrontofcuttingedgehistory.WhenAmerican’sexclaimed“yeswecan”,theywerenotcallingonObamatospendourchildren’sfuturesawaysothatwecandeepenthedeficitbytrillionsofdollarsinordertohaveahealthcarebillthatdoesn’tevencuretheillsofthecurrentsystem.InhisStateoftheUnionaddress,Obamadedicatedthreefourthsofthespeechtotheeconomyandanewjobsinitiative.HetalkedaboutcreatingnewjobsingreentechnologyandvampingupAmericaninnovation,declaringthathewouldnotaccept“secondplace”forAmerica.Thecaseinpointis,however,thatafterthefailureofthestimuluspackage,increasingunemploymentin

Coloradoto10percentandresultinginthousandsofmorejoblosses,cantheAmericanpeoplereallytrustObamaandtheDemocratswiththeirlivelihood?CreatingjobsshouldhavebeenObama’s

prioritysincehisfirstdayinoffice.Notafterhisapprovalratingshavedroppedandthesituationhasgrownfarworse.AndeventhoughheattackedtheWashingtonestablishmenteighttimesinhisStateoftheUnionAddress,inthepastyearhehasprovedthatheonlypartoftheproblem,notthesolution.Heisnodifferent.

Massachusettswasn’tawinforthe“partyofNO”.Itwasn’tavoteagainsttheDemocratsoragainstObama.ItwasavoteagainstWashington,andavotefornewleadership.ButnowtheRepublicansmuststepupandembracetheirnewrole.Theymustprovetobedifferent.Unlesstheydothissuccessfully,thereisnoguaranteethat2010isgoingtobelike1994.JustbecauseVirginia,NewJerseyandMassachusettsvotedredthistimearounddoesnotmeanthat2010and2012willshowRepublicansthesamefavor.ThenewcharacterofWashingtonthatcomes

AlexanderHamiltonbelievedthatforaneffectiveforeignpolicy,Americamustbebackedbyastronggovernmentwithastrongmilitary.ManygreatpresidentsinAmericanhistoryhaveembracedthisperspective,includingPresidentObama’sbelovedFranklinD.Roosevelt.ButPresidentObamaisbecominglesslikeFDR,astrongimperialistresponsibleforourWWIIvictory,andmorelikeJimmyCarter,oneofthebiggestnationalsecuritycompromisersofourtime.FromtheclosingofGuantanamoBay,totheFt.Hoodmassacre,toourrecenthomelandterroristattack—Obamahasbeentryingtoplaythepoliticallycorrectcardattheexpenseofournationalsecurity.PresidentObama’sfirstexecutiveorderwastoshutdowntheCIA’ssecretprisonsandGuantanamoBay,whichrequiredthereviewof245detaineestobeeithertransferred—orworse—released.GuantanamoBayhaskeptpotentialterroristsandradical‐groupmembersfromorganizingandharmingAmericansathomeandabroad.IthasalsobeenwheretheCIAhaswater‐boardedonlythreeterrorists,asuccessfultechniquethatwasabletogetinformationaboutal‐QaedafromKhalidShaikhMohammad,oneofthemastermindsbehind9/11.Obamahasalso

withtheriseofthisRepublicansuperminoritydemandsanewRepublicanguard.Theymustreplacetheir“partyofNO”reputationwiththe“partyofYES”—thepartyofideasandsolutions.Itisn’tenoughfortheRepublicanstokeepsayingnotoObama’sbiggovernmentpolicies.TheymusttakeadvantageoftheopportunitytoactaskeyplayersinofferingrealalternativestotheDemocrats’failedpolicies.IfRepublicanswanttomakeanydentin2010,theymustfindwaystocreatefreemarketinitiativesthatwillcreatelastingjobsandindustriesthatcanproudlybearthelabel“Americanmade.”

flirtedwiththeideaofimportingGuantanamodetaineestotheUnitedStates.Ifthatweretohappen,itwouldclearlyputAmericanlivesindanger.IfObamaclosesGuantanamoBay,terroristswillviewusasweak.Theywillseethisasanopportunitytotakeadvantageofus,andattackusagain.TheFortHoodmassacrewasthefirstpreventableterroristattackoftheObamaadministration.MajorNidalMalikHasan,anofficerintheU.S.Army,killed13andwounded30soldiersonbaseduringhisshootingrampage.HasanwasdressedintraditionalIslamicclothesyelling“AllahuAkbar”whilemurderinghisco‐workers.Thisincidentwasnotasimplework‐relationsproblem—itwasafull‐blownterroristattack,andObamahasdeniedit.HasanhadcleartiestoradicalIslam.Thereisampleevidencethathecontactedaradicalimamwithsympathiesaboutterroristactsandal‐Qaedaoperatives.HealsohadinformationonhiscomputeragreeingwithradialIslamicacts.Hewasn’tsimply“depressed”—hewasradicalized.JustlikeUmarFaroukAbdulmutallab,theunderwearbomber,andAbdulHakimMujahidMuhammad,aMuslimconvertwhomurderedanArmyrecruitinArkansaslastyear,HasanhadconnectionstoradicalgroupsinYemen.Thereisablatantpatternhere,andourpresidentcannotkeepdenyingitforthesakeofpoliticalcorrectness.Obamahasbeenunableorunwillingtoconnectthedots.Asaconservative,Ibelievethegovernment’smostimportantroleistoprotecttheAmericanpeople,andithasfailedtodoso.Toaddinsulttoinjury,theObamaadministrationhasrequiredbothtrialsforAdbulmutallabandKhalidSheikhMohammadtobeconductedincivilcourts.GeneralEricHolderhasdefendedhisdecisiontoprosecutethe9/11mastermindsinaciviliancourtinNewYorkCity.Whatdoesthatmean?Theseterroristswill

beprovidedwiththesamerightsyouandIshare.Oneofthemosttroublingproblemswiththisisthattheywillbeprovidedalawyerinacivilcourt,meaningthatthereisapossibilitythejudgecanofferthedefendantsapleabargain.Abdulmutallabiscurrentlychargedwithattempttodestroyanaircraft.That’sit.Noterrorismcharge.Nochargeasapoliticalprisoner.Obamahastriedtodefendhimselfbysayingthatpeoplewon’tbeoffended“whenhe’s[Mohammad]convictedandwhenthedeathpenaltyisappliedtohim.”But,Mr.President,it’snotaboutthepunishment.It’sabouttheprincipleandthemessagewewanttosendtoterroristsaroundtheworld.WeareatwarwithradicalIslamicterrorism.WhenObamadeniesthis,heisplacingthelivesofinnocentAmericansindanger.AsastudentwhohasstudiedIslamextensively,IcansaywithcertaintythatIslamisnotaviolentreligioninitself.ButradicalMuslimleadersdistortthereligionanduseitaspropagandatokill.TheUnitedStatesmustdefeatradicalIslamicterrorismsothatIslamcanbefinallyseenasthepeacefulreligionthatitis.

IfyouareaRepublicanandthepoliticalleftlovesyou,thereisprobablysomethingwrong.SuchisthecasewithMeghanMcCain,theeloquentauthorofsuchpertinenttweetsas:“IamtheonlyoneIknowwithpurplewallsandsnakeskintables”(8:49PMAug8th),“therearealotofinsomniacsontwittertonight....ilikeit...muhahahnowwhatarewegonnadountilthesuncomesupLestats?”(atleastweknowshereadstheprolificnovelistAnnRice),andmypersonal
