A Win for the PeoPle of CoPPerfieldOn Monday, April 16, 2012 I had the privilege of attending the Copperfield Coalition meeting

at Copperfield Church. Nearly 500 members of the community came together as one voice to speak out against a low income housing project that was being proposed for the area by a private developer.

I was proud of how the community came together to make their voice heard. I explained that under the law I alone could not stop the project. However, I informed the audience that I would register a protest against it with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA). With my protest and the strong and unanimous voice of the community, I explained to the crowd that we might prevail.

After hearing the passion from several more speakers, I decided to speak to the developer privately in the back of the room. I explained to him that with this opposition it was possible his project would not be given a permit. It would not be a good situation for anyone. I suggested that he announce that he would withdraw his application in light of the huge turnout of citizens and the strong feelings against the proposed development. To his great credit, he took the high road. He agreed to put aside his multi-million dollar project. He earned the respect of many in attendance for heeding the voice of the people.

This is a great example of how things can have a successful result if people get involved and make their voice heard. In the end, the community prevailed, the developer showed class, and I wrapped up a long day feeling good about the outcome. It is a rare occasion when a major issue can be resolved in one meeting. Afterwards many folks thanked me for playing the role of the diplomat. I was simply trying to do my job by representing the will of the people of our district. However, as every negotiator knows, you don’t have any leverage if you don’t have a strong hand. Last night the people of Copperfield provided that strong hand with their huge turnout in opposition to the project. If only a small number of people had turned out for the meeting, I don’t think the developer would have withdrawn his plans, no matter how persuasive I might have been.

The bottom line is that this was a huge victory for the people and by the people. This was their win. I was happy to play a small part. I congratulate the organizers who put the meeting together and all of those who attended.

Footnote: I also told the audience that they need to come together like this on all major issues. If people take back their government, community by community, we will have better government and better communities. If 500 people will show up for future meetings on other issues pertaining to schools, county, crime, traffic, and other major issues and then get the vote out by encouraging and educating their neighbors, they can make a huge difference in the future of their community. I hope that happens. I need all the help I can get.

A couple months ago, the Coalition had heard about a low income housing project coming to the entrance of Stone Gate (Barker Cypress at Queenston). We thought that this was too close to our community and decided to look into the matter. Upon further investigation we had discovered that not one, but three low income housing projects were proposed for the 77095 Copperfield area. On April 12th we decided to change our regularly scheduled meeting into a Town Hall Meeting as we were expecting a crowd to exceed the size of the board room. By April 13th the response from the public had exploded. We invited several politicians, news media, and other public officials.

The meeting was held Monday, April 16th, at the Copperfield Church. The audience was roughly a little under 500, and we were graced with the presence of Senator Dan Patrick, Rep. Allen Fletcher, Rep. Dwayne Bohac, representatives from the offices of US

Congressman John Culberson, Rep. Gary Elkins, Rep. Debbie Riddle, and Commissioner Cagle. The Copperfield Coalition would like to offer their sincere appreciation for their support. We would also like to express our appreciation of the attendance of the Harris County Sherriff’s Department and officials from the Cy-Fair ISD Board.

After a short presentation from the Coalition, the politicians made some comments and then we heard from the audience. After an hour and a half and on the advice of Senator Patrick, the developer took the floor and withdrew his application to build low income housing.

The Coalition would like to thank each and every one of you who attended the Town Hall Meeting and all the volunteers who helped spread the word. If it were not for all of you showing up, we would not have had the favorable outcome. We are so proud to be part of a community that stands up and fights for what they believe in. The people spoke, the politicians listened, and we won. We would also like to thank that one individual who forwarded an email to the Coalition which brought this to our attention (a Stone Gate resident).

It takes everybody’s eyes and ears to watch out for our community. If you see something that you believe the Coalition should be made aware of, please advise us of it.

SPEEDING & RUNNING OF STOP SIGNSWe still need everyone to fill out the survey under Speeding and

Speed Bumps on our website (CopperfieldCoalition.COM) on the Polls page. We are gathering this information to compile a strategy with the Harris County Sheriff Department to combat the ongoing and growing problem of speeding and running of stop signs. Currently we have only had a little over 200 take the survey. We are hoping for at least 1,000.

Both the Coalition and the Sheriff’s Department need to grab a firm grasp on what the people want and the only way we can do that is if we hear from you. So please if you have not done so already, please go to our website and answer the questions on our Polls page. The more information we have the more accurate our results will be. Please voice your opinion. It does matter!

We will close the survey and begin developing our strategy on June 12th. Please take the survey prior to that date. Thank you!

FM529 ROAD MODIFICATION FROM 290 TO GREENHOUSE ROAD - A TXDOT PROJECT

A few changes have been made since TXDOT held its Town Hall Meeting a few months back. The medians on FM529 will be green. From 290 to Horsepen Creek there will be no raised medians due to the numerous industrial complexes on FM529. From Horsepen Creek to SH6 green medians will be installed and Hearthstone has agreed to landscape. From SH6 to Sommerall Drive (in front of Walmart) raised medians will be installed. From Sommerall Drive to Barker Cypress the current raised medians will be modified. From Barker Cypress to Greenhouse Rd. it will retain the suicide lane. The project is slated to be finalized this month. The project is expected to commence construction in August with completion four months later (in December).

Security. The Harris County has also adopted this motto, if you see something, say something no matter how insignificant you may think it is. If you are the slightest bit suspicious, call the Harris County non-emergency number and report it. If it is life threatening or an emergency, of course dial 911. The deputies would rather show up to find out it is nothing than show up later after a crime has been committed, and then it is too late. Let’s all take a pro-active stance. Women Serving the CommunityPlease join us in congratulating our 2012 scholarship winners at our June 7th meeting.

We are very excited to meet them. In July, we are putting our skills to great use by creating Breast Cancer Pillows during our Craft Night and in August we look forward to learning the latest spa techniques. So, if you are ready to treat yourself come join us. The more the merrier! CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well.

Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00p.m. immediately followed by a program at 7:30p.m. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road.

Fairbanks Library Friends Host “Books, Etc., Sale”

The Friends of the Fairbanks Public Library are having a book sale on Saturday, June 16, from 10 am-3 pm. In addition to hardback and paperback books, for adults and children, they are also selling VHS tapes, DVDs, and other items. Many of the books are in pristine condition. They would make excellent gifts for yourself or for someone else. At $3 or less, they are also terrific bargains. All proceeds benefit the Fairbanks Library and help provide funding for library programs and materials. Anyone wanting to donate items that are in good condition can drop them off any time the library is open. Donations to the Friends of the Library can be reported as charitable contributions. Girl Scouts continue to celebratetheir 100th anniversary.

Birkes Elementary Brownie Troop 16305 participated in a program called Cookies and Goodnight where they provided snacks for the residents of the Randy and Kathy Tabor Transitional Living Center for Women and Families. The girls prepared and handed out apples, oranges, cookies, peanut butter crackers and water. Star of Hope is a Christ-centered community dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children. Positive life changes are encouraged through structured programs which focus on spiritual growth, education, employment, life management and recovery from substance abuse. The Cypress-Tomball Democrats will hold their next monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 20th, at a new location: Rudy's Grill & Cantina, 11760 Grant Rd., Cypress, TX 77429. A meet and greet will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the general meeting at 7:00 p.m.

June's guest speaker will be Lydia D. Avila, with the Texas Sierra Club. Ms. Avila will discuss the Sierra Club‚Äôs efforts to inform communities of the EPA’s recently announced carbon (or greenhouse gas) protections.

What a great year! From the ice cream social, pj party, men’s bbq, spaghetti dinner and auction, concerts, appearances, parties, to the fundraising, banquet and everything in between: It’s been fantastic! Thank you to everyone for helping our choir men and women have a year full of memories that will last a lifetime.

The Spring Trip to Dallas was a load of fun - supporting the jousting men of the sections at Medieval Times, dining at Hard Rock Cafe, and playing at Fiesta Texas was enjoyment for all. The chaperones and the students came home equally happy and exhausted! A round of applause for all involved in carrying out such a huge event so successfully!

Our graduating seniors are thrilled to continue on their journey, their presence will surely be missed. They were recognized in the most harmonious of ways at the Spring concert. We would like to take this moment to wish them great encouragement on their future accomplishments as we note them by name: Kortland Allen, Jordan Ashworth, Jake Bracher, Madison Burt, Jake Hermida, Cameron Hussey, Kendrea Johnson, Kayley Jones, Eleni Kotzabassis, Elizabeth Lopez, Issiah Miles, James Nguyen, Amanda Sheriff, Kari Sterner, and Taylor White.

Along with the students graduating, their supportive parents will leave our fold with them. The executive board will be losing some very dedicated and loving parents as well. We recognize Marcely Burt, Debbie Mandola, along with long time executive board members, Heidi and Warren Hussey. You have been the backbone o f the choirs extracurricular activities and Ms. D o u g l a s ’s r i g h t hand. Your countless dedicated hours of your many selfless efforts will forever be seen in the continued

success of our choir students. You have loved and been loved and we hope you will carry that love with you and remember your time at Cy Falls with fondness. Thank you seems so inadequate, but it is said with full, heavy, grateful, heartfelt, warmth. Thank you.

Our men’s choir had a command performance for the CFISD Executive Board. They sang in front of the board and resounded beautifully as they presented a sample of their vocal excellence that was enjoyed at TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association). Congratulations to this honors choir for a job well done.

The banquet ‘Denim and Diamonds’ was held at the Northwest Conference Center. It is said that presentation is everything, and the presentation was outstanding! A big Thank you to Sandra Greer, Banquet Chairman. Awards presented by the students were heart felt and hilarious, as the slideshow showcased just how much humor this group has!

So long to the choir student officers and welcome to the now current officers...you have accepted a huge responsibility and we know you will represent the 2012-2013 school year in style!

And as always, thank you Mrs. Deidre Douglas and Ms. Lelah Loftin for your love, support, encouragement, patience and overall blessings with our children. Goodbye to the 2011-2012 school year! Have a safe and happy summer, keep a song in your heart, and we will see you in the fall!

MOMS Club® is an international organization with a neighborhood feel! We are teachers, business women, counselors, chefs, CPA’s and artists who have put those careers on hold and have made the choice to stay home with our kids. MOMS Club® is a place to find friendship, support, playmates and sisterhood!

ALL events include our children and we believe there is something for every mom out there! Are you looking for park days, coffee breaks, lunch outings, craft projects, time to sit and chat, cooking club, or someone to share dinner with when your husband is traveling or working late? We even find the time to meet once a month for a mom’s night out for a great time to

unwind. Or are you interested in helping within the community with service projects? We have that! & a whole lot more!

The MOMS Club has lots of fun summer time activities planned! Do you have young children and looking for some fun things to do? Come join other moms and kids in many great outdoor and indoor activities. Are you new to the area or a new mom and need a friend or support; we are here for you! Don’t let yourself feel isolated being a stay at home mom. We invite you to attend two public events to decide if this is the right club for you and your children. Our membership fee is $20 a year. This MOMS Club is a great opportunity for you and your kids to make new friends in your area. There
