2.0 COMPANY BACKGROUND

We have decided to discover more about the computing system in the library of UiTM

Kuantan itself by paying a visit to the librarian on August 11th, 2014 at 3:50p.m. From what

we’ve gathered, the librarian goes by the name Mohd Ruzaimi bin Abdul Rani.

Mr Ruzaimi has been working here for 9 years and counting, that is from 2006-2014. The

library is located in the campus of UiTM Bukit Sekilau, Kuantan, Pahang. He claimed that to

have the job he’s currently occupying doesn’t require any working experience and you can learn

about the job, on the job.

3.0 OBJECTIVES

To investigate the background history of the library of UiTM Kuantan, Pahang.

To list all the services provided by the library for the students of the university.

To find out the brand and models of each of the barcode scanners, inkjet printers, and

CPU.

To find out the operating system (OS) used by the library to keep track of the books lent

out to the students of the university.

To state the application software used by students in the ICT centre.

To list the types of storage used.

To determine whether the library’s internet connection is a modem or a server.

To study the organization system of the library in Kampus Kuantan, Pahang.

To study the software and application used to manage the library.

To study the differences between Al-Bukhari’s organization system and school’s library

system.

To find out the method used to record new in the library.

4.0 PROBLEM STATEMENTS

5.0 RESPONDANT

We were told by Mr Mohd Ruzaimi, the assistant manager of the library of UiTM

Kuantan, Pahang about the background of the library. He said that he has been working as a

librarian for almost 9 years and counting. He mentioned that the job description doesn’t require

any working experience, and you can learn about the job, on the job.

The services provided for the students are Fast Charging-out which is to lend books to the

students. Besides that, they provide Renewal, which allows students to extend the period of time

in which the students are allowed to borrow books. Other than that, they also provide Fast

Discharging-out for when students return the books that they have borrowed. There are many

types of books that students can borrow from the library ranging from books relating to finance

and accounting, books on the Malaysian constitution, laws, fictional books and more. Not just

that, the library allows you to borrow 14 books for an entire week. Besides that, the library also

offers free internet access for students only.

The library uses an inkjet printer, however it is only for the use of the librarian and not

the students. He uses a printer with inks of black and white, and colour. The brand of the printer

is

Mr Mohd Ruzaimi told us that the operating system in UiTM Kuantan’s library is

controlled by its main database in UiTM Jengka. So this means that every operation in the

computer regarding the function of the library depends on the system in UiTM Jengka’s

computer. The type of operating system (OS) used by the library and the ICT centre is Windows

7. This operating systems includes the whole package of Microsoft Office such as Word, Excel,

Powerpoint, Publisher, Access, InfoPath Designer, InfoPath Filler, OneNote, Outlook, and

SharePoint Workspace.

The librarian uses two types of storage. They are Portable Hard Disk and Internal Hard

Disk to store all the book lending records.  As for the library’s internet connection, he uses a

modem (Streamyx) under the TM Communication Company.

6.0 METHOD

Throughout this survey, we have used two effective methods to gain and gather the

information. The methods are through interview and observation of upon UiTM Kuantan’s

library and ICT centre.

1. INTERVIEW

We have conducted an interview with the librarian of UiTM Kuantan and asked a few

questions regarding the background of the library, the operating system that the library

uses, the function of the library and problems that are faced by the library. The subject

that have been questioned to the librarian are:

Application Software

Storage

Antivirus

Operating system

CPU Model

Internet

2. OBSERVATION

The main services that the library provides are Renewal, Wi-Fi, Fast Charging-out and

Fast Discharging-in.

7.0 SIGNIFICANT

By paying a visit to the library of UiTM Kuantan, Pahang, we got some significant and

information regarding the library and especially about the operating system that the library uses.

These are the information that we have gathered:

Get to know the process of lending out books

Being exposed to the machines used by the library

Get to know the background of the library

Get to know the operating system that library uses

Hopes and mission of the assistant manager for the future of the library

The problems faced by the library and methods of how to overcome the problems

To equip self with knowledge pertaining in information, communication and technology

(ICT)

8.0 RECOMMENDATION

Upon completion of this ICT Survey at UiTM Kuantan’s library and ICT centre, we

would recommend that the company should make better arrangements for future projects.

Also, job segregation and allocation should be done in a more systematic and balanced or

fair manner. Also, a person with full or more authority should be appointed, instead of

only waiting for orders.

10.0 CONCLUSION

Hopefully by the time we complete the survey we are able to distinguish what can

technology offer to us in our daily lives, be able to recognize the pros and cons of

technology thus helping the library to improve its services. We now know our objectives

in doing this survey. Plus, we can also be familiarised with the components of the

computer and also the software used at the library. It’ll be easier to relate to it being

students of the university because we always borrow the books from there.
