Theory/Comp. and Percussion Major Assignments for MUSC 219 Spring 2011: These assignments will replace all playing exams: 1. Due March 14 th Snare drum solo (or duet). Theme or motive - 30” to 1’ in length. Consider using different playing zones, playing on rims, implements (sticks, brushes, timpani mallets, fingers), snares on or off. 2. Due April 11 th Solo marimba with 4 mallets – write for a 5-octave instrument (grand staff). This can be an original work or a transcription – 30” to 1’ in length. Consider implements (hard, soft, rubber, yarn), playing zones (on node in center of bar). Also consider players comfort – while this may feel “good” on piano, will it “play well” holding four mallets. 3. Due May 16 th Small percussion ensemble – write for minimum 2 accessory instruments, 2 keyboards, 4 timpani (3 or more players). This can be an original work or a transcription – 30” to 1’ in length. Consider implements on all instruments. Consider timpani effects (gliss, playing zones, types of mallets), also take into account the fact that they have to pedal each new pitch. See syllabus for software requirements. I will critique drafts prior to due dates if time allows.
