Ringwood Clocktower Probus Rocks by Tella Short Story. The Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club is really going places. With 150 members and a waiting list of 29, and 28 Activity Groups, this club really rocks.
I attended their General Meeting on 15th November and was made to feel very welcome. Their monthly General Meeting was very lively and included members reporting on their trips etc. One member, Wendy, even tried to smuggle two bananas into Australia from Japan only to be caught by Fido of Border Security.
This is the sort of club I would want in my old age! I hope to get back sometime.
Tella.
3 JANUARY CLOCKING ON
PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hi All. Happy New Year. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and were able to spend it with family and other loved ones. With the Christmas period now behind us, it is time to look forward to an exciting year ahead.
2017 went so quickly. I find it hard to believe that I only have two more presidential monthly reports to write. But I want to write about looking forward. Our club is admired by many other clubs because of our wonderful range of activities, the positive nature of our members and the enthusiasm with which our club embraces everything from New Members to General Meetings.
However, if our club is to maintain these incredibly high standards, we need leaders – committee members and convenors. If you are relatively new to the club or if you have not been a convenor or committee member for quite a while … ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club (with apologies to JFK).
We need your personal involvement to remain the great club that we are.
Many of our members are involved in volunteer positions outside our club. Congratulations to Bev Keeble, who has just received a 10 Year Service Award for voluntary work at the National Sports Museum at the MCG.
Now, see in the New Year with a couple of thoughts:-
• An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.
• Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to. Old age is when you say “Damn it, I’m off to bed” BEFORE midnight.
Happy New Year everyone. Celebrate in style.
Cheers - Col Pask President
WELFARE As I write this last Welfare Report for 2017, I reflect upon the privilege of working with Bob A and the fact that this amazing club has allowed us to share the ups and downs of many members. You have certainly kept us on our toes.
We realise that many of you have experienced tough times health wise, many ongoing. We offer our support where possible and appreciate you keeping us informed.
There have been several operations, be it knees or hips or broken bones, and certainly a few bouts of shingles.
Bob and I wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas with family and friends and a better year health wise in 2018 for many.
Merry Christmas to you all.
Ginny and Bob.
Ginny (0422 247 480) Bob (0419 591 204)
EDITOR’S NOTE Some activities are in hibernation during January so don’t forget to check the Events Calendar.
Have a happy and safe New Year everyone. Let’s hope the shingles virus wears itself out!
The deadline for the FEBRUARY edition is Wednesday 10th January.
I can no longer accept items after the deadline. Please forward material for inclusion in the newsletter to:
The Editor, Thérèse Robinson at: [email protected]

DAY TOURS DAY OUTINGS 2017 WRAP Our last outing for the year to the Walter & Eliza Hall was
a real eye-opener into the world of medical research. The intricacies of splitting proteins and the time needed for the most minute developments were almost beyond belief. The contrast with the Percy Grainger Museum gave those intrepid souls who stayed out in the heat a good way to end the day and a bit of a giggle too. Thank you all for making it a great outing.
DAY OUTINGS 2018 JANUARY 26 – AUSTRALIA DAY PICNIC Starting off the year in typical Ringwood Clocktower fashion! A relaxing day under the trees at Queens Park, Healesville. Bring everything; drinks, chairs, sunscreen, grandkids, food ( or buy it up there), thongs for the Great Aussie Thong Toss, hat and anything else you think of. BBQ and cold water available.
Come and go when it suits you between10.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. Wet weather alternative is 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at the Beechworth Bakery next door. FEBRUARY Tuesday 20th – AUSTRALIAN JAZZ MUSEUM. Great day out locally. Hear the story of jazz in Australia. Enjoy a 45 minute live concert and have a light lunch. 10.15 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. $25.00 each. See the flyer here in the newsletter. MORNING MUSTER The December MM breakfast again saw eight guys enjoy a good breakfast and the good company, back at Bean in the Woods, Ringwood. The last breakfast for 2017.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no MM for January 2018 (we can all start our diets) and we will recommence in February. The next breakfast is planned for Tuesday 6th February at 8.00 a.m. again at Bean in the Woods. (Melway 49F8). Hope to see you all there!
P.S. If anyone has a suggestion/request for a new or alternate venue, please let me know.
The six guys who attended The Iceman, Vehicle Air Conditioning & Radiator Works tour in Croydon on 21st November enjoyed the visits and our good President Col showed his skills at cleaning a radiator prior to its repair (see photo).
Debbie and the guys at Iceman do a good job and also assist some of the less fortunate within our
community, so I am very pleased to give them some publicity. I have their business cards if anyone needs their contact details.
Best wishes to all in Probus for Christmas and the New Year. Please note I will take a break over the festive season but will further advise on possible future local business tours early in 2018.

Graham Tucker has very kindly offered to continue to convene the group and I am very grateful to him, as I know the regular attendees enjoy the evenings.
Previously, I asked the participants to nominate their favourites from the movies we had still to see from my
collection. Graham will screen a selection of these initially. The Tradition of a fabulous series of enjoyable evenings will continue under Graham’s guidance.
Watch this space in the February Newsletter for details of the first screening for the New Year.

Noelle H.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP Well, it looks like we have managed to make it through to the beginning of another new year; well done everyone.
So, what can I say? As I write this report, we haven’t made it into December yet, with all the joys ?? that Christmas will bring and which, hopefully, will fill us all with its Joy, food and goodwill to all.
The advice from the Bendigo Bank regarding our application for use of their meeting room has yet to surface, so I will try to keep you all in touch via email as and when news arrives. We will simply assume at this stage that we will be meeting at Bendigo Bank on Thursday 26th January, until further notice.
In the meantime, I can report on a very successful Christmas picnic at Warrien Reserve, where 15 members gathered to enjoy what was a very warm day in a
particularly nice venue. We spent lots of time talking and catching up, with the occasional small group chatting about ….surprise, surprise, photography.
However, only John Ballinger managed a few photographs from his walk with Keith Roper who, as President of the Warrien Park Committee, has lots of interesting stories to share. We will be revisiting Warrien for a full-on photographic assault. Stay tuned.
By the way, if you are looking for a nice family venue for a picnic, Warrien has much to recommend it. Simply contact Keith and he will be only too happy to ‘fill you in’ as the saying goes.
In closing, again my thanks for your support of our Digital Photography Group, to the Calendar Committee who have done such a great job and my best wishes to those who pick up their cameras and record some of the exciting times encountered throughout the festive season.
Happy ‘Christmas’ snapping, Don.

CARAVAN & CABIN WEEKEND – ECHUCA A very enthusiastic 44 Probians spent the weekend of 10 & 11 November in the Echuca Holiday Park with their caravans and in cabins. The park is in a fantastic setting alongside the Murray River and, more importantly, just five minutes’ walk from the shops and restaurants, of which Echuca has many to offer.
The weather was near perfect with 30 degrees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with no rain.
The weekend kicked off with Happy Hour by the pool, followed by a sausage sizzle perfectly prepared by our able cooks, John Moody, Cliff Brown and Chris Rowell.
This was followed by a session of games where teams vied for the most points, playing rounds of mini golf, quoits, cards and bean bag toss. The noise in the rec room was deafening as the games progressed, with hoots of success and near misses. It was evident that the simple rules did not cater for protests, independent tribunals or steward’s enquiries; “we were robbed” was a common catch cry. The players needed constant reminders that the convenor’s decision was final!
In the end, the Gold medal was awarded to Team 9; Jo O’Reilly, Nance Neale and Graeme Roy with 33 points and Team 6; Ginny Pask, Irving Wong and Graham Tucker also in hot pursuit, catching the Bronze medal with 31 points. Congratulations to the winners!
Saturday kicked off early, with the Brekkie Girls taking breakfast at the Odd Captain. This was followed by an option for a 5 km river walk by John Moody and Dave Davies or an historic town walk, lead by Peter Prowse, with expert commentary from Bob Anderson. Both walks ended in town with coffee and no snake bites.
The rest of the day was given over to shopping and browsing the shops and local attractions.
Some early games in the park preceded the Saturday Happy Hour with players enjoying a new game, Finska, on the shaded lawn. This was followed by a 2 hour dinner cruise on the Pride of the Murray, which finished after dark with a sound and light show projected on to the river bank in the port area. An excellent way to finish.
All in all a fantastic weekend, however, not without a couple of unfortunate incidents. Margaret Leyden succumbed to the heat and fell ill on Saturday afternoon whilst waiting for the Historic Society Museum to open and ended up in hospital for the night. Fortunately, medical attention was close at hand at the site and she recovered well and, after an overnight stay in the hospital, she was
released and was able to return home on Sunday afternoon. Best wishes for a speedy recovery Margaret.
There were also a couple of niggly problems with the park management which had changed since the bookings were made. The group booking discounts had not been passed on and, thanks to Roger Bayley’s sharp eye, we were all able to redeem the lost discounts. There was a problem with the Prowse’s and Tucker’s room configuration, with bunks instead of double beds. With the park being fully booked, this could not be fixed. Grrrrr!
Otherwise, a terrific weekend. Looking forward to our next outing in Queenscliff, hopefully incident free.
