    Safety Concern: Potential safety concern if cord is caught in playgroundequipment, a bus door, fences, tree branches, etc..

    Defined as: a textile or non-textile material braided, twisted, fused or

    woven together. Including but not limited to a sash, drawstring, tie or belt

    which can be permanently attached to the garment or

    independent/removable from the garment

    Cords include but are not limited to;

    drawstrings, belts, ties, sashes, and bungee cords.

    Cords Design Safety Guide - Definitions

    Belt: Exposed and

    Drawstring: Encased

    in a channel within

    the garment

    CORD TYPES

    FUNCTIONAL: Alters the shape or size of the garment

    (adjustable).

    NON-FUNCTIONAL:

    Secured to the garment in a way not to allow the

    size or shape of the garment to be altered.

    Purpose is to provide a decorative element to thegarment ONLY.

    Safety Concern: potential injury for cuts or skin puncture by

    a trim component.

    Defined as: a trim component sharp to the touch, or that

    activates a sharp points or edge tester.

    Requirement, Sizes 0-16: All accessible trims; no sharp

    points or edges allowed before and after Use and Abuse

    testing.

    Example of testing cylinder Safety Concern: potential choking

    hazard if trim component becomes

    accessible and is swallowed by a child.

    Defined as: a trim component able to fit

    completely into a specially designed test

    cylinder (2.25 long by 1.25 wide,

    shown at left). Cylinder mimics the

    approximate size of the fully expanded

    throat of a child.
