Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month: Remembering Sue’s Message BY SUSAN DINAPOLI MCLAIN AND TODD CRAIG

Every 40 hours one woman in Colorado dies from ovarian cancer. Sue Di-Napoli was one of those unlucky women. DiNapoli, who spent her adult life assisting impoverished people in Southern Colorado, understood the dif-ficult choices people make. Even after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, her concern was for all women fighting the disease, not simply her own battle.

In her final years, she wrote letters to her insurance company demanding that they pay for certain tests and treatments that were previously denied - not because she couldn’t afford to pay for them, but because she wanted them for all women, regardless of their ability to pay. “Why should a woman have to choose between feeding her family and paying for this PET scan?” one letter read. That was Sue DiNapoli, the champion of the underdog.

Many women believe that a pap smear and a mammogram are the keys to re-maining cancer-free. The shocking truth is that, while these tests represent a good start, there is no early detection screening for the most serious of these diseases, ovarian cancer. Knowing the subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer is the closest thing we have to early detection. And these symptoms are some-times so slight that they are often not taken seriously enough by the women experiencing them or misdiagnosed by her doctor, and it’s why ovarian cancer has earned the nickname of the silent killer. These subtle symptoms to B.E.A.T. ovarian cancer include:

B- Bloating E- Eating less and feeling full A- Abdominal pain T- Trouble with your bladder

The frightening truth is that ovarian cancer kills over 55% of the women diag-nosed within the first 5 years. Sue DiNapoli was lucky; she survived with ovar-ian cancer for 5 ½ years. Compare that number to the less than 5% of women who are diagnosed and die from breast cancer. Then compare the knowl-edge of the symptoms and the early detection that is now available for breast cancer. Often the mammogram aids in finding cancer even before a lump is present. Women all know what to do if they discover a lump in their breast. What about persistent bloating? Or trouble with your bladder? Do today’s women know enough about the symptoms to recognize ovarian cancer?

And that’s where the Sue DiNapoli Ovarian Cancer Foundation steps in. Through their community outreach programs, educational services, and financial support offerings for local women in need, they play a vital role in fighting ovarian cancer here in Southern Colorado.

Standing up for women in their fight against ovarian cancer is not cheap, however, and like other cancer charities, the Sue DiNapoli Ovarian Can-cer Foundation uses multiple community activities to both raise funds and awareness throughout the year. The biggest such event was the fourth annual Be Ovary Aware 5k run 3K walk that was held on Saturday, August 11th at America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs.

This community event brought together the areas’ local businesses, top run-ners, cancer survivors, and their friends, families, and supporters in a demon-stration of love and support for local women battling ovarian cancer.

It does not stop with this race; this is a year-long fight for awareness and continually needs the support from the community. If you are interested and would like to offer your time or financial support to the organization, please go to BeOvaryAware.org for more information.

My Dinner with AmyBY ELIzABETh BEhNKE

When I found out I was going to be attending “Dinner with the Chef” at Garden of the Gods Gourmet, I did not know what to expect. I had imagined that there would be large flames of fire, delicate cuisine, and fancy utensils to use. however, it was not quite was I expected.

When I entered the restaurant, the word “classy” instantly scrolled across my mind. There was a cute eating area inside which included a wine bar, but you could tell the main attrac-tion was the Market Place, where you can buy every dish that they make, from fresh breads to entrées and even desserts.

When dinner was announced, we were seated at tables inside the kitchen. When they say “Dinner with the Chef,” they really mean it; you dine with award-winning chef Amy Pontius! From your table, where you are seated with fellow foodies, you get a front row seat to all the action. Everything was beautiful, the food was cooked fresh, and the flavor was to die for. I have never had a more delicious five course meal in my life! From the appetizer to the dessert, it was all exquisite. There really are few experiences like this one that people get to enjoy.

I would highly recommend that you have “Dinner with the Chef,” and see for yourself how truly divine it is.

BY GISELA SChMIDT

When I was a child, I was able to teleport.

I acknowledge the skepticism you are all feeling. honestly, it’s hard to believe it myself, but it really happened. I would fall asleep on the couch and wake up in my bed. There is no greater proof than that.

I was skeptical, too. As I grew older, I began to realize just how special I was; not everyone could teleport. So I questioned, and I dug, and I plotted, and I schemed. I noticed a pattern to the occurrences: it happened when I was asleep, and the television was somehow involved. Also, I was almost always wearing my nightgown. Putting this together, I decided to recreate the circumstances.

One night, as I sat on the couch with my family, I slowly closed my eyes and began the snore that I had been practicing. It sounded a little like “kaw-shee” with an occasional whimper. I’d never heard anyone snore in real life, but I was pretty sure I had it right. I grew very still and focused my energy, trying to feel something. But the only thing I felt was my father’s hand on my shoulder, shak-ing me back to consciousness. Unwilling to give up so easily, I remained limp and didn’t break my snore for even a second. I would figure this out.

My father picked me up and carried me to bed. That was nice of him, I know, but it meant that I still didn’t know how I was teleporting.

I tried again the next time the circumstances aligned, and again my father shook my shoulder. I “woke up” and asked him to carry me to bed, but he wouldn’t. Something about me being too old for such treatment. Ever after, I maintained the sleep illusion, but every time it was my father’s arms I felt transporting me up the stairs and under my covers.

I never did learn how I had teleported. There was one more time, when I was eight, when I went to bed on the top bunk and woke up on the floor. But since then, I’ve only ever moved by physical effort and my mental powers have been relegated to the sphere of information. But none of this disproves the fact that, when I was a child, I could teleport.

Gisela Schmidt is a freelance writer in New York City. She enjoys all foods equally and has even been known, on occasion, to get a little crazy. Most suc-cessfully, this has led to an appreciation for fermented camel’s milk. On the flip side, she hopes never again to eat sheep’s forehead.

There is certainly a lot of water cooler chat about people helping within their community, thoughts on giv-ing back to the less fortunate, donating time at a soup kitchen, or giving charitable donations to notable organizations. Well, there’s one gal who felt so strongly to help those in need that she started her own notable organization. Madison “Peach” Steiner founded Peaches Neet Feet (PNF) in hopes of making a real difference in people’s lives in the simplest of ways. She is a local artist who hand paints canvas shoes and donates them to children whom are battling various forms of illnesses including cancer and other life-threatening conditions. Along with two other artists, Ms. Steiner customizes each and every pair of shoes to the child’s life, interests, and fighting spirit.

Throughout her life, Ms. Steiner has always felt inspired to try to bring joy to people who otherwise have little reason to smile. Seeing a child’s face light up when he or she receives a pair of shoes made just for them is what keeps Ms. Steiner continuing what she does, despite the heavy emotional toll it can bring for those who lose the fight.

Ms. Steiner truly enjoys art and what it does for the soul. She says that it can bring joy to those who create it, and to those who look at it. She has found that something as small as a painted pair of shoes with a child’s name and interests can bring a big smile to a little face. It gives them something that is theirs and only theirs. PNF is spreading inspiration, smiles, and creativity. It is clear that Ms. Steiner’s passion is not only art, but also the true art of giving . Many have noticed her passion for compassion including Dee Pak Chopra and vans Shoes, who have both endorsed her acts of giving.

When the shoes are finished, they are personally delivered by a “shoe fairy” to the deserving, special child. Steiner loves delivering the shoes herself and hopes to continue to hand deliver them in the coming months, despite the increasing workload . While PNF accepts donations, nei-ther Steiner nor her associates take a salary from the orga-nization. The money simply goes specifically for the shoes to give to needy children. “We do shoes for a lot of chil-dren with cancer, autism, and other long-term and chronic conditions,” Steiner said. “These kids are spending days and months in hospitals and going through treatment for their illnesses, yet they’re always so happy. It reminds you of the little things in life. The good things.” Continued on pg. 36

Do 1 Thing BY KAThY ALLEN

Recently, the Waldo Canyon fire compelled our mayor to inspire the community to “do one thing.” While the nation watched, our community acted. Nonprofits opened their doors for donations, foundations opened their checkbooks to donate, and volunteers stepped up to the challenge. By mak-ing small attempts to remedy the problems so huge that no one individual could have resolved, we made progress on the overwhelming big picture of devastation.

There is an organization with a mission to Do 1 Thing. Their goal is to move individuals, families, businesses and commu-nities to prepare for all hazards and become disaster resilient. Do 1 Thing has taken one year and broken it down into twelve steps. Their belief is that any emergency is easier to handle when you have prepared ahead of time. Because emergencies can (and do) happen anywhere, Do 1 Thing lays out this plan:

1. emergency supplies• Gather your emergency supplies in an accessible place –

your “go” bag. We suggest including: battery powered radio and flashlight; insurance policies and safe deposit box keys; medications, glasses and other personal neces-sities; change of clothing; books/magazines to pass time

• Stash some cash in case ATMs and banks are unavailable

2. Be informed• Make sure your family knows what to do when an emer-

gency warning is given

3. Family communication Plan—Assure that your family can communicate in a disaster by developing a plan• Have a cell phone with a cord and a car charger in case of

power failure• Program In Case of Emergency (ICE) numbers into all

family cell phones, including all numbers for the person to be notified in a medical emergency

4. First Aid• While waiting for an ambulance, have someone watch

and direct the crew to the patient; do not give an injured person anything to eat or drink unless instructed by the emergency dispatcher

5. Food• Follow the BUS rule – Balance, Usability, and Shelf life• Consider special dietary needs of your household

6. get involved• Connect with an isolated neighbor• Promote emergency preparedness in your community• Become a volunteer

7. make a Plan• When an emergency happens, you have to decide what

to do very quickly, while worrying about what might hap-pen. Learn what types of disasters can happen where you live and the seasons they might occur. Talk about them with your children. Help seniors and individuals with dis-abilities make a plan.

• Take steps now to prevent damage to your home• Plan what to do if you must evacuate• Choose two places for your family to meet• Make a plan to make sure your pets are cared for

8. Power• Have flashlights ready with an extra supply of batteries• Acquire and learn how to safely use a portable generator• Know how to open garage if electricity fails

9. sheltering• Identify the best shelter in your home, away from windows• The Red Cross Shelters do not allow weapons, alcohol, or

pets (except for service animals). Pack a GO bag for your comfort and safety.

10. unique Family needs• Infants, prescription medications, health supplies for

diabetics, glasses, canes, etc• Work thoughtfully on a plan for a household member

with a disability

11. water Whether you live in the country or the city, your water supply relies on electricity to run the system. Water can become unsafe to drink in a disaster.• Store a 72 hour supply of commercially bottled water• 1 day, 1 person = 1 gallon = 7 bottles (4 liters)• 3 days, 1 person = 3 gallons = 21 bottles (12 liters)• Never ration water! Drink the amount you need today and

look for more tomorrow.

12. work, school & community• Know all evacuation routes• Locate the fire extinguishers and Automatic External

Defibrillators• Give emergency kits to people who rely on you—college

students, elderly parents and neighbors

By taking each of the twelve steps and attaching a calendar month to it, you can be making progress on your disaster relief plan. Time and time again, displaced residents vocalized how grateful they were to be alive and safe. Although their homes were devastated and their possessions lost, our fire victims are planning for their future. Knowing that their fam-ily members and friends were spared, possessions became things that could be replaced.

As Colorado Springs rebuilds, we all can Do 1 Thing to help a friend or a stranger. Local agencies like Care and Share, Silver Key Senior Services, and American Red Cross stepped up alongside restaurants and local business to make life a bit easier for evacuees and firefighters alike. The appreciation groundswell for those impacted is humbling. I plan to reduce the overwhelming problem of rebuilding to bite-size tasks by starting with this article to help my friends and neighbors to be prepared.

Kathy Allen is a local author, former Girl Scout, and community steward. Being employed at Silver Key Senior Services has brought both awareness and responsibility to the aging baby boomers. Firsthand knowledge of ag-ing with independence and grace inspires her writing.

Straight from the SourceBY AMELIA WADE

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been called the most effective martial arts ever. This full contact sport focuses on the grappling and ground-fighting realm of martial arts, using leverage points from all parts of the body. The techniques themselves are more powerful than muscular strength, which is why you don’t have to have huge muscles to still effectively disable your opponent. This makes Brazil-ian Jiu-Jitsu perfect for self defense and invaluable for women and children.

Brazilian natives Carlos Santos and Marcelo Motta have established Prime Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu here in Colorado Springs. They offer classes ranging in basic self-defense to elite level competition, including classes designed for mastering technique and bully-proofing children. These men follow the lineage of the legendary Gracie Family, who founded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and have popularized the sport worldwide.

Carlos is a 3rd degree black belt and three-time World Champion. Marcelo Motta is a 2nd degree black belt and three time Rio de Janeiro State Champion. Not only are these men masters of their craft, they live the BJJ lifestyle and love it. You won’t find a more authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience in Colorado Springs. And who knows? You might learn a little Portuguese while you’re there!

Ask Dr. Hall Q: i have heard about dental implants but i have con-cerns. Are they safe and is the procedure painful? A: Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth. They are highly predictable and safe with over a 95% success rate. The process of having dental implants placed is very simple. We take a 3D image of the spot where the tooth is missing to evaluate the bone and create a computer-guided stint. Because the jaw bone does not have nerve innerva-tion like teeth, patients often comment that getting a dental implant is easier than having a tooth worked on.

Q: i have crooked lower teeth. do i have any options other than traditional braces? A: Patients are often reluctant to wear braces if they can avoid it. A great solution for you may be Invisalign, the clear alterna-tive to braces. These custom-made, clear aligners gradually shift and move your teeth into place. Every two weeks, you pop in a new set of aligners until treatment is completed.

Q: do bleaching kits from the drug store perform as well as custom ones made in a dentist office? A: Drug store kits are not custom-molded to your mouth and leave little control over where the bleaching solution goes, which can lead to sore gums and tooth sensitivity. For this reason, custom bleaching trays are far better than over-the-counter kits. I have found the Kor Deep Bleaching System to be the best way to whiten or bleach teeth. It consists of 14 days of at-home bleaching and one in-office bleaching ses-sion with phenomenal results.

Get the Most from Your Oil BY TIM WILSON, YOUR IMPORT CAR DOCTOR

Q: why are recommendations always changing?A: Recommended Oil Change Intervals for new vehicles have grown from the old standby of 3,000 miles to 10,000 miles, in some cases, and even more in a few instances. Motor oil per-formance has improved dramatically, as has engine engineer-ing, improved materials, control systems and more.

Q: How do i know what is best for my car?A: The first consideration should be oil quality. Manufacturers are very specific regarding their oil specifications, particularly for vehicles with extended oil change schedules.

Q: can i use a less expensive brand of oil for my car? A: Not using the proper oil invites problems, possibly BIG problems, down the road! If there’s a warranty issue with the engine, the oil will be sampled. And if you get caught with another kind of oil than the manufacturer states, guess what! You just bought yourself an engine!

Q: with high gas prices, what’s a person to do?A: I find that I can impact my gas mileage a mpg or so by carefully watching my driving habits. Maintaining proper tire pressure and alignment will provide a bit more of a boost in mileage and can really extend your tire life. If you’re in the market for new tires, you’ll want to compare the difference in the rolling resistance of the various models.

PNF is not limited to Colorado. One houston mother, whose two autistic children were given the decorated shoes, said, “There are so many organizations out there, and they all do good things. But this… this is something different.”

You can find a story for each child that has received a pair of shoes from PNF on their website, www.peachesneetfeet.com, along with the many different letters of appreciation and gratitude, like this one from the Logan family: “I would like to thank you all for all that you do. You have brought priceless smiles to my children and me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know my husband thanks you from heaven as well. Thank you so very much. You all have brought some happiness to our little family.”

If you would like to get involved with this wonderful organization, there are a lot of opportunities available. A donation of money is always welcome and appre-ciated, as well as a donation of canvas shoes. You can also help by mailing shoes, shopping for shoes, participating in fundraisers, raising community aware-ness, and just spreading the word. visit the website www.peachesneetfeet.com for more information on ways you can get involved.

A Small Business Meets with Big SuccessBY KARL JONES

Top of the Peak Landscaping is truly a small business, family owned success. The Stegman family, owners of Top of the Peak, has been serving Colorado Springs since 1999. They have grown from handful of employees, mostly family, to a 50+ strong team of dedicated profes-sionals: Trained and educated in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, fertilization and soil enhancement, land-scape construction, turf management, irrigation imple-mentation and grounds maintenance.

The secret to their success? Unwavering dedication to your project, from conception to completion. They are not satisfied until your vision has become a reality. This assures that your perfectyard has little, if any, snags along the way. It also means that their on-time completion rate is one of the best in the business.

You have finally achieved your place in life. Let Top of the Peak help you make the most of it. Their creations are designed for you and the environment, with sustainability and endurance in mind.
