As the nation’s infrastructure becomes increasing-ly in need of repair or total replacement in manyplaces, a sustainable supply of quality aggregates forhighway construction becomes more important.According to the United States Geological Survey(USGS), the demand for all types of aggregates in2007 and 2008 was approximately 2.5 to 3 billiontons per year. More importantly, the Federal HighwayAdministration (FHWA) estimates the annual need forpavement aggregates at approximately 700 milliontons. Bill Langer, a USGS aggregates researchgeologist, notes that in order to meet the current and

future infrastructure needs over the next five years, a70 percent increase in annual aggregate productionmay be required. Therefore, it is with this increasingneed that recycled concrete becomes an importantresource. Recycled products can replace virgin mate-rial.

CalCrush of Ripon, CA recognized this need morethan a decade ago. It was April 12, 2000 when theyfirst began recycling concrete paving materials.According to Charlie Evans, primary owner ofCalCrush, the company recycles an array of rawproducts ranging from concrete, asphalt and brick, to

block and tile, all originating from sources through-out California and northern Nevada. He said thatthese recycled materials ultimately become roadbase, rip rap, manufactured sand and other aggre-gates designed for asphalt and concrete.

Evans said that CalCrush chose the IROCK TS-512screen plant because it fits well with many differenttypes of rock crushers. When outfitted with the trackpropulsion system, the TS-512 is able to get intosmall and tight jobsites. With this kind of flexibilityand portability, the crews can process material whereit is stockpiled. This saves customers the cost ofhauling raw materials from the stockpile to thecrusher.

CALCRUSH from 3

Since buying the first one from Maxim Equipmentof Stockton, CA, CalCrush purchased a second TS-512. “We acquired one in 2010 and the second in2011,” he said.

“One of our TS-512 is currently working on-site atthe Edwards Air Force Base,” Evans said. “It’s screen-ing behind a tracked 3055 jaw crusher. We are mak-ing three different concrete products with it, a 4x2-inch, a 2x1-inch and a 1-inch minus. Our other TS-512 is on location screening material behind atracked 4250 horizontal shaft impactor. That one ismaking 3/4-inch minus aggregate base.”

Evans added that they have also been impressedwith the TS-512’s production rate. “We can get 300plus tons per hour past the 5x12-foot screen box,” hesaid. “That is a tall order for a 5x12-foot box tohandle, but the IROCK is up to the challenge.”

“One of the unit’s greatest assets is its simplicity. Itis not overly automated, so you don’t have to be a

rocket scientist to work it. We like the idea that some-one with entry level training is able to operate andmaintain the equipment. It is also very fuel efficientand so far very reliable,” he said.

Sean Donaghy, national aales manager for IROCKCrushers LLC, added, “The set up time of the TS-512is quick and efficient due to its integrated compo-nents and systems. In addition, the layout of the unitis convenient. Its easily accessible components andsystems make repairs simple.”

He noted that the IROCK TS-512 Tracked Screenerweighs 59,535-pounds and is 9-feet 10-inches wide,51-feet 10-inches long and 10-feet 6-inches high.

He added that the top deck screen dimensions are12x5-feet and the bottom deck are 10-feet 4-inches x5-feet with a feeder capacity of 9.2 cu/m. It ispowered by a Cat C4.4 TA (TIER III) 100HP engine.

by Gwenyth Laird PernieAccording to Sean Donaghy, national sales

manager for IROCK Crushers LLC of OakwoodVillage, Ohio, the IROCK TS-512 tracked portablescreening unit, is a relatively new product to theIROCK Crusher line. It has been manufacturedsince 2010. The tracked screener offers a wide rangeof applications such as sand, gravel, topsoil andaggregates. “Several big advantages of the screeningplant is that they reduce energy costs because oftheir technologically advanced engine systems,” hesaid.

IROCK Crushers LLC is located in OakwoodVillage, Ohio. It started doing business in 1991under the ownership of Ken Taylor. IROCK suppliesproducts to the United States and Canada providinga full line of portable crushing and screening plants. The IROCK line is designed for use in processingquarry rock, sand and gravel, recycled asphalt, concrete and demolition debris with typical produc-tion rates of 50-650. DSC Dredge, LLC andSupreme Dredge & Pro-cessing, LLC formed anew company namedSupreme-DSC Dredge,LLC. The company wasformed as a Louisianabased corporation butmajor component manu-facturing will still takeplace at the Stoneboro,PA manufacturing facilityas well as existing DSCfacilities. DSC andSupreme had been dis-cussing the possibility ofcombining forces to com-plement each company’sproduct lines since early2011. All that was neededwas the catalyst to offi-cially create Supreme-DSC Dredge, LLC. That

catalyst was provided bythe interest from a Mid-West aggregate supplier(Company) that recentlyordered a 16-yardclamshell dredge fromSupreme-DSC Dredge,LLC. Key features for thedredge include; a 16-cu-bic-yard bucket with ex-tra weight for better pen-etration, 200-foot dredg-ing depth capability, gantry style hoist frame,50 ton electric hoist anda multitude of processingequipment and conveyingequipment.

The company was us-ing a cutter suctiondredge that could notpenetrate a layer of hardcobblestones and wanted

information on clamshelldredges. “After touringtheir site and watchingtheir cutterhead dredgeand processing plant inoperation, we were confi-dent that our clamshellwould be able to pene-trate their deposit and beable to retrieve muchmore of their valuable re-serves,” commented NeilHoobler, president ofSupreme-DSC. The com-pany purchased a smallused clamshell dredge totest the capability of min-ing the deposit mechani-cally. They knew thedredge was not bigenough to meet their pro-duction requirements, but wanted to prove that

it could effectively digtheir deposit. The compa-ny was satisfied that aclamshell dredge woulddig in the difficult depositand was then ready toproceed with a larger ma-chine. The companysigned a letter of intent inOctober and completedtheir selections for theprocessing equipment inNovember resulting in theorder for the new 16-yardclamshell dredge fromSupreme-DSC. Thedredge is scheduled to becommissioned in August2012.

“We are very excitedwith our alignment withNeil and David Hoobler,”commented Bob Wetta, operating manager ofSupreme-DSC Dredge,LLC. “The Hoobler’s(Supreme) are known asa leader in the industryfor custom clamshelldredges. DSC is knownas a leader in the indus-try for custom hydraulicdredges. The joining offorces will allow for con-tinued growth and allowfor multiple manufactur-ing locations. DSC’s mis-

sion is to be the preferredhigh quality dredge man-ufacturer and we havenow extended this into anew product line, me-chanical dredges,” addedWetta.

“DSC Dredge is a majorplayer in the cutter suc-tion dredge market. Bycombining our productline with theirs, we canoffer customers the bestpossible solution for theirdredging application. Wealso look forward toworking with the salesteam at DSC to increaseour market share in theUS and expanding intothe International marketas well,” stated Neil

Hoobler.DSC currently operates

three manufacturing fa-cilities; Poplarville, MS,Greenbush, MI and head-quarters in Reserve, LA.DSC has sales and serv-ices into over 40 coun-tries and strives to be thepreferred high qualitydredge manufacturer.Supreme is one of theleading clamshell dredgemanufacturers in theUnited States. Time is usually re-garded as a negative inany business endeavor— the quicker, the bet-ter. After all, time ismoney (right?). Balanc-ing the “time requiredfor sustainablechange” with a “sched-ule for change” is al-most always an exer-cise in conflict. Whenthe pressure is on tofinish an initiative by acertain date, coolheads and a commonsense approach mustrule to create a positiveoutcome. Millions ofdollars can easily beinvested inprocess/systems de-sign and implementa-tion. If the appropriatebehavioral changes donot materialize withinthe design/implemen-

tation window, the in-vestment and expectedfinancial benefits areboth at risk becausethe behaviors, not theprocess changes, deliv-er the value in the end.

More about time asan element of change

When change initia-tives are suggested, one of the first ques-tions managementasks is “How long willthis take?” or “Whenwill we see dollars flowto the bottom line?”Time should be viewedis a critical element insuccess — without it,no real change occurs.Time is required to de-sign and implementprocess changes; evenmore important, it ispart of the processwhen people let go of

old behaviors andadopt new ones.Achieving lasting be-havior change requirestime just like a seed re-quires time to sprout, grow roots and blos-som. Each individual isdifferent in this re-spect, so it should notbe assumed that every-one will be in the sameplace after one week orone month has passed.

How many times hasmanagement set a dropdead date for a changeinitiative, then redi-rected resources awayfrom it when a break-through is just withinreach? The followingcase study illustrateshow management’s fo-cus on a “sacred go-live date” forfeited thebenefits from a multi-

million dollar systemimplementation:

continued to arise during thedevelopment phase, erodingcontingencies built into theschedule. Site managementeventually asked the projectteam how they could shortenthe remaining time frameand still meet the promised“go-live” date. At least threemonths prior to go-live, itwas obvious that training re-quired prior to the go-livedate would not be completed.Site management had twochoices: 1. Stay committedto the date and postponetraining until after the “go-live” date or 2. Move the dateforward and conduct the re-quired training prior to go-live. Management decided topostpone training until after

go-live because they wantedto save face at corporate.

Then the unexpected hap-pened… when corporateheard that this location wasgoing to meet their originalgo-live date, corporatemoved this site’s training re-sources to other locationsbecause they thought thatthis location was “done.”Employees at this site wereleft “high and dry” trying todo their work with little orno training. The old systemhad been “unplugged,” sothey had no option to fallback on and were forced tostruggle to accomplish tasksthat used to be easy.

As a result, promised sav-ings and productivity gains

(part of the ROI for the proj-ect) were minimal or non-ex-istent. BUT… the site man-agement team could saythey “met the date,” protect-ing their credibility with cor-porate (even though theylost a lot of credibility withtheir own workforce). Sitemanagement was perceivedas effective leaders eventhough their decision great-ly reduced the return onthis project and harmed theculture at their site.

Thought for the month:Shortening the time for achange initiative alwayscomes with a cost. That costmust be honestly examinedbefore canceling tasks thatimpact project success.

If your management teamseems disjointed, if you havetrouble reaching consensus, ifmanagers say they want cul-ture change but behave as ifthey don’t, or if you have cometo the conclusion that culturechange is the secret to youroperation’s success, youwould benefit from calling KaySever. HUNTERTOWN, IN —Asphalt Drum Mixers,Inc. introduces its Ex-calibur Series asphaltplants with single drumcounterflow technology. The new plants offerhigh efficiency and acompact design for con-tractors with low tomedium productionneeds.

The Excalibur Seriesasphalt plants produce100 to 425 tons per hourat a very low cost perton. They boast thelongest aggregate dryingand mixing times in theindustry, and are capa-ble of processing highpercentages of RAP.

Using counterflowtechnology, the Excal-ibur Series has separatedrying and mixing zonesto achieve the maximumlevel of heat transferand fuel efficiency. Fur-thermore, this systemvirtually eliminates un-safe hydrocarbon emis-sions, which are a com-mon problem with otherdrum mix plants. Tomake the plants even

more environmentallyfriendly, ADM designedthe system to reintro-duce residual gasesback to the drum’s com-bustion zone.

Also, the plants areavailable in portable orstationary versions. Theymeet all federal and statespecifications and con-sistently produce qualityasphalt to help protectoperators against out ofspec damages.

Plant controls are so-phisticated in their abili-ties, yet simple in opera-tion. The Excalibur Se-ries can be operated byjust one plant operatorand one loader operator.Additionally, the plantsare built with durabilityand low maintenance inmind, so onsite staff isable to handle mostbreakdown issues.

A wide range of compo-nents further customizeseach plant for particularcustomer needs. Avail-able individual compo-nents include cold feedbins, hot oil asphalt ce-ment tanks (both hori-

zontal and vertical), di-rect fired horizontal ce-ment tanks, portableand stationary bag hous-es, mineral filler sys-tems, RAP systems, self-erect and stationary si-los, weigh and drag con-veyors, weigh batchersand fuel oil tanks.

In addition to the Ex-calibur Series, ADM alsooffers its MileMaker,RoadBuilder and SPL Se-ries. Each ADM plantcan be custom designedto meet the requirementsof individual sites, es-sentially building eachclient’s business basedupon the componentsand plant size needed.

A family owned compa-ny since 1974, Asphalt

Drum Mixers, Inc. offersasphalt plants, auxiliaryequipment, parts andservice. For more infor-

First, Pam Whitted, updated the status ofthe Federal HighwayBill in Congress, andnoted other upcomingNSSGA sponsoredevents, nationally. Shetold of how The RoadConnection truck willbe traveling around thenation to bring aware-ness of the need for anational transportationbill passage.

“The reauthorizationof a national surfacetransportation law hasbeen our number onepriority for the past twoyears,” she said. “Weheld the first Rally forRoads. The Road Con-nection is a way forpeople to see firsthand, the need for a trans-portation bill.”

Next, Joe Vig, groupvice president of theASTEC Recon group ofcompanies (which in-cludes Kolberg-Pioneer

Joe Vig, president of KPI-JCI, discusses the importanceof supporting the Road Connection's efforts in Wash-ington, D.C.

vocating for betterroads by educating peo-ple about the need for along term highway bill.

Immediately followingthe conclusion of theWorld of Asphalt/AGG1trade show in Char-lotte, NC, The RoadConnection made itsway to the nation’scapitol to participate inthe second annual Ral-ly for Roads event, heldon March 20, 2012. Atthat event, workersfrom all facets of theroad construction in-dustry and its suppliersrallied together inWashington D.C. to tryto impact federal trans-portation policies.

From Washington,D.C., The Road Connec-tion took its message tothe C&D World Exhibi-tion and Conference inNashville, TN, held inthe Nashville Conven-tion Center from March25-27. The Road Con-nection team then setcourse for Savage, Min-nesota to participate inan event held by RoadMachinery & SuppliesCo., (RMS) on April 5.Headquartered near theTwin Cities, RMS hasgrown to become one ofthe largest dealers inthe U.S., with 12branch offices.

From Minnesota, TheRoad Connection cam-

paign will travel toKalamazoo, Michigan totake part in the Michi-gan Aggregates Associa-tion (MAA) AnnualMeeting. The AnnualMeeting and Showcasewill be held on April 17-18, at the KalamazooRadisson Hotel.

Finally, Andrew Gill-man, who drives thetruck, shared his rolein the process. In a re-cent white paper pre-pared by Gillman, henoted: “Adding to theobvious benefits of put-ting construction work-ers’ boots back on theground, and improvingour federal highwaysystem, we will also seebenefits of the reautho-rization bill trickleback down into theU.S. economy. Manu-facturers will benefitfrom a long term bill;more machinery willneed to be manufac-tured to meet the de-mand of an influx of in-frastructure dollars go-ing to transportationprojects, providing amuch needed shot inthe arm to an industrythat has been forced tomake cuts over thepast few years. If prop-erly invested in infra-structure, everydaycommuters will see apositive effect on theirwallets in terms of min-

imizing congestionaround major U.S.cities. Conversely, ifnot invested properly,by the year 2040, mo-torists will be wasting$175 billion annuallyby simply waiting intraffic.

In addition to boost-ing this economy, anincrease in the qualityof U.S. roadways trans-lates into fewer trafficfatalities and vehiclemaintenance and repair

costs. About 33,000 au-tomobile fatalities occuron a yearly basis, andpoor road conditionsare a factor in one thirdof those 33,000 fatali-ties. As far as safetyconcerning this coun-try’s bridges, the situa-tion is just as grave.Dozens of bridges havecollapsed in the pastforty years, killing hun-dreds. Additionally, upto one fourth of thebridges throughout the

United States are ratedas structurally defi-cient.

There is still a lot ofwork to be done onCapitol Hill before wesee a long term reau-thorization bill signedinto law, but lawmakerson all points of the po-litical spectrum are be-ginning to understandthat U.S. roads are notsomething that can bepushed to the backburner for much longer.

Roads and bridges inthis country are in direneed of repair and un-less Congress canagree, it would be a safeassumption that in thiselection year, U.S. law-makers may see theircareers crumble rightalong with the roadsand bridges in their dis-tricts.”

For the more than 6,100 registered attendees to the2012 World of Asphalt and AGG-1 Aggregates Forumand Expo held at the Charlotte Convention CenterMarch 13-15, the summer like weather madeattending the event a delight, which was in starkcontrast to the unfortunate blizzard like conditionsthat visitors experienced at AGG-1 two years ago inCincinnati, Ohio. Just the same, a record number ofexhibitors (408) welcomed the throng of industryprofessionals, on hand to attend the trade show andmany of the 90 plus educational sessions conductedduring the three day event. From the responses ofseveral of the exhibitors, this year’s early springhelped to bring out the record number of attendeeswho showed a renewed interest in products andservices after a number of years of experiencing aslowed economy.

“Attendees tell us they are here to get up to speedon the latest ‘best practices’ that will drive growth intomorrow’s economy,” stated Show Director MelissaMagestro. “They know they can conveniently connectwith peers and industry experts and examine all theproducts that will increase job efficiency and produc-tivity.”

“Exhibitors are commenting very favorably on thenumber and quality of customer contacts and thesales activity on the show floor. World of Asphalt andAGG1 offer real value in cost effectively bringingtogether buyers and sellers,” she added.

At a post show reception for the media and specialguests, show organizers recognized the late, NationalAsphalt Pavement Association President, R. WayneEvans for his past contribution to the show as adevoted promoter. His passing in 2011 has been feltby those who worked along with Evans, to make theshow the success that it is.

Organizers noted that the 2013 World of Asphaltand AGG-1 would be held in San Antonio, TX, March19-21. For more information go to www.worldofas-phalt.com or www.agg1.org.

ONTARIO, CANADA— The F-Class fourbearing double eccen-tric vibrating screenfrom St. Catharines,Ontario based W.S.Tyler, a wholly owned

subsidiary of the Ger-man based HaverScreening Group, mini-mizes structural vibra-tion and delivers a moreconsistent stroke thantraditional two bearing

screens. As the eccen-tric shaft turns, thescreen body is forced tofollow the shaft move-ment. While it travelsupward, the counter-balance weights movein the opposite direc-tion and create anequal force to that gen-erated by the body. As aresult, the forces canceleach other out so thedynamically balancedsystem does not trans-mit any vibrations intothe structure. This al-lows producers to placescreens side by side ifdesired while minimiz-ing the investmentsinto heavy structures. The double eccentricshaft creates a constantpositive stroke that caneasily handle materialvolume spikes withoutlosing momentum. Thistranslates into peggingand blinding free aggre-gate operations as theconsistent G-Forcekeeps the openingsclear. Since 1997, morethan 560 W.S. Tyler F-Class vibrating screenshave been sold into ag-gregate and mining op-erations throughout theworld.

Like premium auto-mobiles, W.S. Tyler F-Class four bearing dou-ble eccentric vibratingscreens are built on

platforms that combinea machine width and adrive type, consisting ofan eccentric shaft as-sembly with bearingsizes ranging from 120to 160 mm. Within theplatform, the producerchooses basic parame-ters, such as screenlength and the quantityof decks the applicationrequires. Within theseparameters, the produc-er then chooses betweenmultiple variables, suchas deck setup, suspen-sion systems, reinforc-ing plates, wear lining aswell as stroke and speedcombinations. W.S.Tyler’s global screeningexperts work closelywith producers to designthe ideal screens foreach application.

In addition to tradi-tional screening, the F-Class is often used be-fore primary crushers toscreen out fines andeliminate excess crusherwear. It preciselyscreens material from 6-inches down to 20 mesh;is available in sizes from6 x 12-feet up to 8 x 24-feet with inclines from10 to 25 degrees; offersup to three screendecks; and comes with abase frame that allowsfor simple installationinto a producer’s exist-ing structure.

W.S. Tyler’s F-Classalso features a ruggedhuck bolted body de-sign, which is free fromwelds; 90 degree topand 45 degree bottomDurabend side plates;patented angle box ten-sioning; single pointgrease lubrication andhands free tube hous-ing for bearing workwithout come-alongs ordrift pins.

All W.S. Tyler screensundergo extensive test-ing and inspection, in-cluding vibration analy-sis, prior to shippingthat assures properworkmanship, correctbalance and smooth op-eration while adheringto acceptable noise lev-els. During commission-ing on-site, W.S. Tylertests the screen again tomake sure it achievesoptimal performancewithin the customer’sspecific operation andperformance targets.W.S. Tyler’s F-Classcomes backed by a stan-dard 18 month warrantyfrom date of shipment.

This warranty can be in-creased with optionalcustomer specific war-ranty upgrade packages.

New remote operatedCreep Drive allows op-erators to control theStone Slinger and ma-neuver the truck from

outside the cab.MISSISSAUGA, ON —

W.K. Dahms Mfg. Ltd.has successfullylaunched a new genera-tion of remote controlsfor Stone Slinger truckconveyors that can dra-matically reduce thetime to unload and placeaggregate loads with pre-cision.

The new StoneSlinger™ Creep Drivesystem provides opera-tors with a remote con-trol feature that not onlycontrols the speed anddirection of the conveyor, but allows the operatorto remotely maneuverthe truck itself aroundthe jobsite. The operatornow has a single set ofcontrols to run the con-veyor and reposition thetruck for ideal placementof the material, withoutreturning to the truck. The truck and the StoneSlinger become a fullyintegrated material deliv-ery system.

Scott Nelson, managerof W.K. Dahms, reportsthat the first of the newStone Slingers equippedwith Creep Drive was de-livered at the end of Au-gust to John Da Silva ofRock Concrete FormingLtd. in Mississauga, On-tario. After putting theStone Slinger through itspaces for a full season,Da Silva says, “If I wasbuying another truck, Iwouldn’t get anythingelse — no question!”

According to Da Silva, his investment in theCreep Drive feature haspaid off well. “On a typi-cal weeping tile job, thedriver has to go back andforth to move the truckfour or five times. And,each time, when you getinto the truck, you haveto turn the PTO off, drivethe truck, put the airbrakes on again andrestart the PTO. It’s thetime saving that paysyou back.”

The right place to beBy using the remote

control to move thetruck, the operator re-mains outside the cab tokeep the material flowing

until the load is com-pletely delivered. Da Sil-va says that getting outof the truck is the rightplace for operators to be.“You get out here andyou can see everything. We are always working invery tight spaces. Youcan watch the wheelsand the ground more

closely than if you’resteering from the cab.You won’t ever put thetruck into a pothole or aditch, so you never haveto wait for another truckto come and pull youout!”

The Stone SlingerCreep Drive adds a com-plete hydrostatic drive

system to the standardpowertrain of the truck.A hydraulic driven gear-box is inserted into thedriveline. A CAN Buspanel controls all hy-draulic and operatingfunctions and communi-cates with the remote, which the operator car-ries in a sling.

Jobsite safety de-signed in

Nelson explains thatsafety was a key factor inDahms’ design of thesystem. “The maximumspeed the truck canachieve under hydraulicpower is 2.5 km/h — acomfortable walkingspeed. The control cir-

cuitry receives constantfeedback on the actualwheel speed from thetruck. If the truck’s onan incline, the hy-draulics will brake itsspeed automatically.Several fail safes arebuilt in as well. If the

wheel speed exceeds 4 km/h, theCAN Bus will shut down and stopthe truck completely.”

Lower costs, better resultsDa Silva finds that the Creep

Drive leads to better job quality, too, with less wasted material.Operators naturally tend toavoid extra walks back to thetruck if they possibly can. Bymaking it easy to move the truckinto the best location, Creep Dri-ve helps operators to distributethe material more precisely andconsistently with no extra timeor inconvenience. For a contrac-tor like Da Silva, that translates

into lower costs for cleanup andfor material.

W.K. Dahms Mfg. Ltd. hasbeen manufacturing the StoneSlinger truck conveyor systemfor more than 30 years and con-tinues to set the standard for ef-ficient delivery and placement ofaggregate materials. The origi-nal Stone Slinger concept wasan innovation of W. KeithDahms, who first fitted a truckbody with an outboard rear con-veyor to replace the traditionallabourious and costly wheelbarrow method of distributingmaterial on construction sites.
