March 31 - April 1, 2018 Holy Saturday / Easter Sunday

From The Desk Of Our Pastor

Dear Friends,

The month of March and the first few weeks of April is a time of mixture: crocuses and snow flakes, new buds and dry leaves. Crosswinds blow, both cold and warm. In early spring, we’re both heartened by the coming of spring and dis-heartened by that trek to H and R Block. March and early April is that in-between time when we are not quite sure, when we are caught in the middle. Do I take in the snow shovels or bring out the deck furniture? This time of year resembles our lives—a mixture of both sorrow and hope. And like our lives, March and April tempt us to hedge our bets but also invites us to stretch our faith. The stories of the first Easter people, are stories of people who at first were hedgers. We see Mary Magdalene so tough standing at the foot of the cross but so hesitant as she sits outside of the empty tomb and cries “The Lord has been taken from the tomb! We don’t know where they have put Him!” We see Peter the rock who once told Jesus “I’ll lay down my life for you.” But now he sits in the high priest’s courtyard just a few feet away from his master’s torture. He’s a man caught in the middle and when put to the test, he hedges. “I do not know the man.” Even in today’s Easter Gospel we note the hesitancy of the beloved John. Even though he beat Peter in the race to the tomb, once he got there, John hedged, “He did not enter but bent down to peer in.” The Easter story is not just about the resurrection of the Lord from the dead. It’s also the story about the people around the Lord who were raised to new life. It’s about all those people who went from hedgers to huggers. Jesus never hedged. To all the powerless who society had decided might as well be dead, Jesus brought life. He hugged them with the power of God and brought them home. My friends, we too are called to believe in the power and the presence of God, despite the hedging that still goes on in our lives and in our world. We are called to choose life even when we smell death, to believe, not inspite but in forgive-ness, to reject the prince of darkness and all those agents of death who refuse to believe in the possibility of new life. We are called to hug the powerless and welcome back to life those who were lost. Although Easter is a time of great joy and happiness, there is a bit of sadness for me this year as it is the last Easter that I will celebrate with you. It certainly goes without saying that I will miss all of you. You have been so kind to me and to my family during these past five years, which changes most of the sadness into gratitude for me. Happy Easter, Fr. Wally

MEETING

MONDAY, APRIL 2

7 PM IN OUR LADY’S HALL

THIS WEEK IS FAMILY FAITH WEEK…

GR. 2: Lessons 3 & 4—We will discuss the stories of Zacchaeus and the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes and appreciate that eating a meal together is a time of remembering and sharing. We will com-pare Jesus’ Last Supper to our family meals and understand that we remember the Last Supper when we celebrate the Eucharist. GR. 1 & 3-6: A Family of Faith: This month, we focus on the Holy Spirit—the third person of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit was sent to the Apostles on Pentecost. We receive the Holy Spirit within us at Baptism and confirm it at Confirmation. The Holy Spirit lives in each of us—guiding us to live the life God calls us to. Gr. 7 & 8: We are completing our Created for Love Workbooks this month—coming to better under-stand how God calls us to live out chastity and healthy relationships in our lives. Using our Visions Gospel Weekly, we will look closely at the events of Holy Week and how they continue they relate to the stories of the people of Israel., as well as the sustaining nature of prayer in our lives.
