St. Bridget of Ireland

Pastor’s WordsAs I’ve mentioned in recent homilies, Christmas day is actually an octave, a celebration that extends through eight days (De-cember 25-January 1). I’m sure we’re more familiar, however, with what we call the 12 Days of Christmas. This is the period which extends from December 25 through January 6 (Epipha-ny). In some European countries, Epiphany is the day on which gifts are exchanged, reflecting the gifts given by the Magi to the Christ child.

We’ve all hard the familiar Christmas song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” The song was composed in England in the mid-1700s, a time when English law did not allow Catholics to openly practice their faith. The song may have been written to serve as a catechetical tool, using secular images to convey spiritual themes.

The “true love” who gives all the gifts is God the Father. The “me” is all of us who are bap-tized. The meaning of the gifts is as follows:

Partridge in a pear tree – ChristTwo turtledoves – Old and New Testaments

Three French hens – gifts of the Magi: gold, frankincense, myrrhFour calling birds – four major prophets: Elijah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Isaiah;

four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and JohnFive golden rings – first five books of the Old Testament, the Torah

Six geese a laying – six days of creative work in GenesisSeven swans a swimming – seventh day of creation, the day God rested;

seven sacraments, seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; seven corporal/spiritual works of mercyEight maids a milking – eight beatitudes (Mt 5:1-12)

Nine ladies dancing – nine choirs of angels (seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominions, virtues, powers, principalities, archangels, angels)

Ten lords a leaping – Ten CommandmentsEleven pipers piping – eleven faithful apostles

Twelve drummers drumming – twelve minor prophets, twelve tribes of Israel, eleven original apostles and Matthias, successor of Judas; twelve gifts of the Holy Spirit.

As we celebrate Epiphany, we recall how the wise men gave the Christ child gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These were certainly fitting gifts. Gold was a gift for a king. Jesus was of King David’s royal line. Frankincense was used in the Temple and in worship. We hon-or Jesus as true God and true man. Myrrh was used to anoint the bodies of the dead. Jesus came into the world to die.

Considering the many graces and gifts God gives us, it is fitting to ask: what can I give to you, dear Jesus? The best gift we can give to him is an obedient heart.

In Our Lord, Father Paul Grankauskas

2018-19 Religious Education Program

Saint of the Week: St. Marguerite Bourgeoys:

Marguerite was born in Troyes, in the province of Champagne (France), on Good Friday, April 17, 1620. She was

baptized on the same day. At the age of 20, Marguerite believed that she

was called to religious life. Her appli-cations to the Carmelites and Poor Clares were unsuccessful. A priest

friend suggested that perhaps God had other plans for her. In 1654, the governor of the French settlement

in Canada visited Troyes and invited Marguerite to come to Canada and start a school in Ville-Marie (eventu-ally the city of Montreal). When she arrived, the colony numbered 200 people with a hospital and a Jesuit mission chapel. Soon, she realized

her need for coworkers. Returning to Troyes, she recruited a friend, Cath-erine Crolo, and two other young

women. In 1667, they added classes at their school for Indian children. A second trip to France three years

later resulted in six more young women and a letter from King Louis

XIV, authorizing the school. The Congregation of Notre Dame was

established in 1676 but its members did not make formal religious profes-sion until 1698 when their Rule and

constitutions were approved. St. Marguerite died in 1700.

Her feast day is January 12th

RE class resumes this weekend.

There will be no RE class on January 20th.

is in them that your strength lies”
