March 25: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

What a change in attitude in the crowd from the Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion, from adulation of the crowd to Peter’s denial. As disciples of the Lord, we are called to follow him. Jesus shows us the way to trust, becoming obedient to death, even death on the cross. It is easy to follow when all is light and goodness and joy, but are we willing to stand with Mary and John at the foot of the cross, when darkness covers the land and we feel forsaken and alone? Remembering that Jesus died for you and me, can we embrace his suffering and offer a small sacrifice for those who are alone and in darkness today? Can we visit a lonely neigh-bor, or reach out to someone in prison or in the hospital? Can we pray for those who suffer for their faith in Syria and Iraq or other parts of the world? Rather than cursing the darkness, can we light a small candle and bring light to our small corner of the world.

Pope Francis has asked us to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the Church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. St. Georges Sat~ March 24 4:00 PM Reader— EM–

March 7, 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: At the Chrism Mass in 2014, I promulgated our Diocesan Pastoral Vision by presenting three Priorities that would become the focus of our parish life. They include: Creating a Culture of Vocations, Strengthening Faith Formation in Family Life and Building Parishes with Living Stones. Clearly, the restoration of the dignity of mar-riage and of the family is key in realizing these priorities as we con-tinue to build up the Church in the North Country. In his Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis called for a “renewed awareness of the importance of marriage and the family” (AL,2). We are truly privileged to welcome Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak as the Keynote Speakers at the Life and Family Con-ference and Workshop to be held at Trinity Catholic School in Mas-sena on Saturday, April 14th. This faith-filled, gifted couple will help us achieve greater clarity and deeper insights into Church teaching on Marriage and Family Life. Fifty years ago, Blessed Pope Paul VI, in his prophetic Encyclical Letter, Humanae Vitae, reminded us that “God the Creator wisely and providently established marriage with the intent that He might achieve His own design of love through the human person” (HV,8). God has a plan. Marriage: God Calls, We Respond. Too often we think our plan is better. But God always offers a better way. The experience of the last several decades has only served to reinforce the wisdom of the Church’s teaching. We can no longer assume a common understanding of the mean-ing of marriage. Make no mistake. No matter what others might argue or even legislate, marriage is of divine origin. It is the Divine Plan for love and life. The challenges to God’s teaching on mar-riage are mounting at a rapid pace. Our most effective response is the faithful witness of Catholics. The need for our knowledge of Church teaching and its daily witness is crucial in the face of the brokenness, confusion and relativism that characterizes the times in which we now live. We can no longer depend on the culture and public institutions for support. The Church’s vision of married life and love is meant to be the foundation for the many works of evangelization, catechesis, pasto-ral care and education and formation in our parishes. The recent Popes have emphasized that pastoral ministry in service of mar-riage and family life should be an urgent concern for the Church. I’m confident that our time together at this Conference will be a tangible sign of our desire to accompany married couples and fami-lies in our journey of faith, responding to His call with joy and en-during love. I strongly encourage your participation and prayers for a fruitful conference in Massena. Faithfully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg
