Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

"He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up." Did you grow up in a small town? Whenever you see stories of tight- knit communi-ties, a common refrain is that everybody knows everybody, and that's very difficult to change. If you leave and return, people expect you to be and act a certain way, and it's strange for them if you do not. In today's Gospel, we see that Jesus was already moving "in the power of the Spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He...was praised by all." His ministry has begun! News of his growing popularity must have proceeded him to Nazareth. Upon his arrival, he "went according to his custom into the syna-gogue on the sabbath day." For the first few moments, he is what they expect their hometown boy returning to pay his respects. As was common of men at the time, he takes a turn reading a passage of Sacred Scripture. It is a bold passage, one he selects intentional-ly. "He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was writ-ten: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me." After reading about holy anointings, liberation for the poor and prisoners, and physical heal-ings, Jesus does the unthinkable. "'Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.'" We are all called to imitate Christ wherever we are. This might mean doing the unexpected! All too often we're content with the dai-ly status quo, and so are the people around us. When we take a stand for Christian values, change our lifestyle to reflect the Gospel, and work for justice in society, we may make others uncomfortable. But Jesus doesn't call us to the same life we lived yesterday or the year before that. He is calling all of us each and every one of us to deeper conversion of heart. No matter what other people expect, will you love in the Spirit of the Lord today?

From Father Tom: I realize your concern for the weekend schedule. Thank you for the prayers, novenas, and mass intentions. They are helping me heal. We have had extensive, in-depth planning sessions with the decision that when one priest is available we will have three masses on the weekend. Bishop LaValley has repeated-ly stated that he has no back-up priests to help in parishes. We have one priest (in his 80th year) who is officially retired but has agreed to celebrate sacraments for our parishes. In addition, Dea-con Brian can baptize, officiate at marriages, and celebrate funer-als. My recovery is slow as doctors have explained to me because of the complex medical issues involved. In the next several months I will need three surgeries, Please continue to pray for me. Conse-quently, the current "Winter" Schedule will surely continue beyond the winter. Thank you for your cooperation, understanding, and your good prayers. Please to pray for vocations, particularly from your own family. During my illness, your cooperation with Deacon Brian has been exemplary and forward-looking. I would like to thank Deacon Brian, who, in my absence, had been administering the parishes well. Thanks to all of you who have cooperated in our planning pro-cess and who continue service in the church.

Parish Office Notice: We are having issues with the office phone not ringing in. We are in the process of getting new phones. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Environment Stewardship As Catholics we know January as Pro-Life month. This month in the U. S. has also been designated as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Did you know that some of the effects of change in climate, i.e. more frequent tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, rising sea levels, increase the number of people at risk of being for trafficked for sex or labor? In June 2014, the number of refugees worldwide exceeded 50 million children, women and men. Half of these refugees are children who get separated from their families during disasters. Source: “Human Trafficking and Environ-mental Refugees” Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking. Choosing one way to lower your carbon footprint like carpooling, combining trips etc. can have a ripple effect on reducing the causes of the change in climate. i.e. use less gasoline this week.
