Dad’s Best Memoriesand RecollectionsBy Charles J. Humber

A good rule is not talk aboutmoney with people who havemuch more or much less thanyou.

Sir William Campbell House In 1969, following my graduate studies at the University ofWisconsin, one of the biggest chores Gay and I had wasfurbishing our newly acquired three-bedroom house at 63Westhumber Blvd., in Rexdale, Ontario. Rather than buy-ing new or second hand furniture, we decided to fill ourhome with antiques. So off we went to the many farm auc-tions taking place each weekend outside our residence wasbulging with furniture, not so much because I was a com-pulsive shopper, but because the cost of antiques was soreasonable, especially at a time when inflation was ram-pant. Antique furniture was escalating in price so fast thatantique dealers were looking to re-stock their storesalmost on a daily basis. In fact, it was not unusual to buyseveral items at a farm auction and on the way home dropinto antique shops and turn a quick profit.Wheeling anddealing became a constant part of my life during the1970s. Gay and I upgraded our antique collection almoston a monthly basis. Before long we had assembled whatbecame known as the Humber Collection. Many of ourpieces were loaned to exhibitions or were illustrated andreferenced in various books and magazines aboutantiques. By the mid-1970s, I was even teaching anevening course in Antiques for the Etobicoke Board ofEducation.Early in 1973, antique dealer Les Donaldson, a pioneer inthe antique business, whose store was in Galt (nowCambridge), about an hour west of Toronto, had justacquired a cupboard that was nearly 200 years old. It wasperfect for storing clothes and accessories for the antici-pated birth of our third child (instead, Gay gave birth totwin boys later that October!). I negotiated a price of$1700.00, a considerable sum in those days. Beautifullypainted to simulate burl walnut, it was entirely crafted inpine. In reality it was a linen press, made in Scotland, imported to Canada and purchased by Les, who wasknown throughout his life as a much respected dealer. Anantiquarian, Les really knew his stuff. In fact, he tookmuch time to educate me about what constituted qualityantique furniture, originality, provenance, age and somuch more. The linen press cupboard he sold me in thespring of 1973 was crafted in I787.The entire piece wascompletely original, clean and ready for use. Gay washappy although she wondered if I had perhaps paid toomuch.... While this transaction was taking place, two addi-tional matters surfaced that directly impacted our family— first of these was a letter from antique dealer CarlHutchinson whose shop was located in Queenston, nearSt. Catharines. In his eighties, Carl had hustled forantiques since be-fore the Depression. His wife, Nancy, mailed us the letter in June, 1973, exclaiming that Carlfinally had bought the best cupboard he had ever ownedor ever seen, later identified as the Grobb cupboard. I wastotally flabbergasted after driving to the Niagara Peninsulato see it. To be blunt, as the elderly couple unveiled it intheir small barn, I was completely overwhelmed. Carl gaveme to the end of the month to pay for it. My next doorneighbour in Rexdale, Bert Trew, who was a bank manag-er in downtown Toronto, loaned me the money, a whop-ping $2500.00. Clinching the deal for the Grobb cupboardleft me no choice but to sell the Donaldson linen presscupboard to help pay off the bank loan. This developmentled to a second matter that po-tentially could have upsetour plans. In other words, while these two transactionswere being processed during the spring of 1973, therewas, at the same time, an ongoing story in the mediaabout how Toronto's last surviving Georgian home, the SirWilliam Campbell House, had been moved through down-town Toronto to the northwest corner of Queen Street andUniversity Avenue and was slowly being restored. Thehigh-profile move was orchestrated by the Advocates'Society, barristers, who had come together in 1963 to forma Society as a forum for discussion, education and fellow-ship. After raising the money to move the historic house amile across mid-town Toronto in 1972, the Society beganrestoring this grand Georgian house masterpiece and ini-

tiated filling it with period furniture. This generated in me an idea.... Perhaps those in charge ofrefurbishing the Campbell House, built in 1824 by a manborn in Scotland in 1758, just might be interested in theLes Donaldson cupboard. William Campbell had come toToronto in 1811. He became Ontario's Chief Justice of theOntario Supreme Court, 1825-1829. Sir William Campbellwas, indeed, an important historic figure! One could notpossibly blame me for thinking that those in charge ofrefurbishing the stately Georgian home just might showinterest in my cupboard, especially since it was crafted,1787, in Scotland, William Campbell's birth place. A highschool classmate, Alan Emerson, an Advocates' Societymember himself, made a presentation, on my behalf, tothe powers in charge of restoring and refurbishing theCampbell House to its former glory. He met with such per-sonalities as Barry Pepper, and Hyliard G. Chappell amongothers, and the deal was consummated for even more thanwhat I had originally paid for it. This deal was finalized in1978.1 was, needless to say, absolutely thrilled with thetransaction. No question about it, both parties benefitedfrom the transaction, but I, at least, was getting ourhousehold out of debt.

Today the William Campbell House is much more than ameeting place for advocates or barristers. It has a uniquedining room named after one of its founders, John JosiahRobinette, the first president of the Advocates' Societywhen it was founded in 1963. An offshoot of the RobinetteDining Room is a separate enclave where my former cup-board proudly stands. Nearly thirty years after selling the cupboard to theAdvocates' Society, the grand overseers of the Sir WilliamCampbell House, I had the desire to pay the landmarkproperty a visit and see my old cupboard one more time.So I touched base with James ("Jamie") Clark, youngestson of one of my former Heirloom partners, Angela DeaCappelli Clark. James, a partner with the law firm SternLandesman Clark, was able to arrange for a luncheon get-together at the Campbell House. This was back in 2003.During our luncheon sojourn at the Campbell House,Jamie, always thoughtful, took several photos. It was ameaningful reunion to meet up, once again, with the cup-board that caused me potential bankrupties back in the1970s but in 2003 brought back fond memories as Itouched it and admired it.This happenstance, for me, is areally nice memory....

Old Time NewsOriginally Published in the April 22, 1943 Issue of The Woodbridge Advertiser

MEN'S SECTION

Under the leadership of Mr. Bayard L. B

ryant

president of the Woodbridge Bo

ard of Trade, a

men's section of volunteers w

ill be organized

WHAT IS THE PLAN?

Just as thousands of ladies i

n Canada are giving mornin

g or afternoon

to Army Canteens, to the p

acking of prisoners boxes',

Red Cross work

etc. The Woodbridge plan is

based upon volunteer work

teams taking

over light and simple jobs

in the Robinson Plant, re

lieving regular

workers to do more skilled

work and thus increasing t

he flow of fin-

ished cloth so badly needed

for direct war needs. The m

ain difference

in the Woodbridge plan is t

hat this voluntary effort wi

ll result in the

building of a special fund to

be used for War Work, whic

h will be known

as the Woodbridge Volunte

er War Workers Fund, adm

inistered by a

group of Woodbridge citizen

s.

HOW THE FUND IS BUILT

Every hour of volunteer la

bour will be recorded and

the basic rate

of pay the volunteer have

earned as a regular wor

ker will be con-

tributed to the Woodbridg

e fund. In addition, a sub

scription of a

further 20% of all money

earned will be paid into th

e fund by the

W. Robinson Company.

EXAMPLE

If for example, the plan

succeeds and fifty Woodb

ridge citizens

donate one morning or aft

ernoon each per week, th

e fund would

be richer by approximat

ely $300.00 per month,

and the extra

cloth produced for the wa

r could amount to as muc

h as 400,000

yards per month. If it we

re possible to get 100 wor

kers or more

volunteering, so much the

better.

WHAT IS WORK?

All volunteer work will be

of a simple, easy type. T

icket writing,

wrapping finished lengths

of cloths, etc. This work

is now being

done by regular workers

who ca be released for m

ore important

work in the plant. One pe

riod of four hours a week

, given by an

enthusiastic group of vo

lunteers can produce m

ost important

results. Machinery, at pres

ent idle, could actually be

put into oper-

ation if the Woodbridge pla

n succeeds.

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?

This is a Woodbridge plan,

open to the whole town a

nd near vicin-

ity. The Volunteer War W

orkers of Woodbridge is a

group open to

all citizens. Any person w

ho realizes the urgent an

d tremendous

importance of keeping th

e war production lines r

olling on for

Victory, and who can spa

re four hours or more pe

r week to co-

operate in this vital work

is invited to contact any

of the citizens

who are heading up this o

riginal and unique war ef

fort.

Vintage Computer Humour..Memory was something you lost with ageAn application was for employmentA program was a TV showA cursor used profanityA keyboard was a pianoA web was a spider's homeA virus was the fluA CD was a bank accountA hard drive was a long trip on the roadA mouse pad was where a mouse livedAnd if you had a 3-inch floppy . . . You just hopednobody ever found out!

Drumming Up A ReasonA man vacations on a tropical island, and the firstthing he hears is drums. He goes to the beach andhears the drums; he eats lunch, he hears thedrums; he tries to sleep, he can’t—drums. Finally hestorms over to the manager.“I’ve had it! Can’t you stop those drums?” he begs.“No!” says the manager. “It’s very bad if the drums stop.”“Why?”“When the drums stop, the bass solo begins.”

No Means NoA farmer was trying to get a loan from a bankerwhen their conversation was interrupted by a tele-phone call. The banker listened for a while and thensaid "No."He said "No" about five times and thenended the call by saying "Yes.""What did that feller say that made you change yourmind and answer 'Yes'?" asked the farmer."I didn't change my mind,"the banker replied. "Hewanted to know if my final answer was no."

How much is a billion dollars? If you spent $1000 a day (or$365000 a year), it would take you nearly 3000 years tospend it all!

I remember a scathing "put-down" popular in my youngeryears. When you wanted tolabel a man as spineless yousneered that "he was tied to hismother's apron strings."

Come to think of it, though, theway the world seems to befalling apart, I can't think of amore secure place to be tied.

All Quiet on the Homefront. . .I saw the following quotation on a social network-ing site the other day, "Shhh! don't talk unlessyou can improve the silence." Ah Silence! Farmlife can be hectic and very noisy by times. Cowsbawling to be milked, pigs squealing to be fed,the drone of the tractor's diesel engine,

the pounding thump of the square baler plunger. Not to mention the clang of the discs in a rockyfield, the screech of a hay elevator, chickensclucking, roosters crowing or the whirling click ofa hay rake. Seagulls squawking following the trac-tor and plows, fighting each other for grubs, worms or mice. Newly weaned calves protestingtheir mother's absence. I will admit that those

noises are quite a bitlower on the annoyancemeter compared withthe racket of a citystreet. However, whenones body aches withfatigue all things quietis quite a welcometreat.

One of the memories Ilove about Life on theFarm is, silence. Yesthe cows have beenmilked, the pigs arefed, the equipment isquiet, the sun is set-ting. The big rocknorth of the barnbeckons to you. Theday has been longand hard so you

accept it's invitation. You seat yourself amongstcontented cows reposing in the cool evening air.You hear nothing. The neighbors have endedthere labors too ,so there is no commotion in thedistance, all is resting.

One of my favorite authors, Robert Service, penned these words,

"Were you ever out in the Great Alone when themoon was awful clear? When the icy mountainshemmed you in with a silence you could almosthear?" "A silence you can almost hear!" I supposethat is what could be called an oxymoron. Nonethe less, silence; what a beautiful sound. Justthink about that for a moment.

There are many beautiful, soothing sounds inour everyday lives. The melody of a song bird, thepurr of a kitten, the coo of a dove, the harmonyof an accapella quartet, a Beethoven symphony, rain on a roof or my Grand-daughter saying myname. I am certain you all can add to the list ofsounds that are exceptional to your ears. But thesound of silence can't be duplicated. It is a soundthe soothes a tired body like none other. Theabsence of noise and sounds can be the bestsound you've never heard. Oh! How I loved thequiet times of Life on The Farm.

Vernon

My Earliest Memory. . .

Our farm was at the end of a lane, with no public road adjo

ining it any-

where, a mile from the nearest highway, with no electric poles or ru

n-

ning water. In spring and summer, a visitor approachin

g the farm

down that lane from the north through scrub timber and coming sud-

denly on the valley would be greeted with a lovely

vista. In late fall and

winter, on a cloudy day, the valley could be a drea

ry place, and at night

with no “light pollution” from electricity, it could be al

most pitch black.

It was easy to believe the stories of the ghost of th

e old lady buried on

the hill across from the house wandering about carrying a lantern

.

Look! Wasn’t that a light? No, it’s gone. Did I real

ly see it?

But on moonlit nights, even in winter, it had a stark beauty

, with tree

branches like etchings back-lighted by the stars

peeking through. On

such a night in 1936, a small boy “going on three” l

ay in the bed of his

grandmother in the hall of a two room house overlooking the v

alley.

The boy’s mother and father and baby brother were sleepin

g in the

adjoining bedroom-living room. The kitchen and a side room used to

smoke-cure meat, and a back porch, made up the rest of the s

mall

dwelling. The hall was the only place for the gran

dmother to sleep.

Suddenly the lonely hoo-hoo-hoo of an owl in on

e of the trees lining

Dry Branch pierces the night.

“Grandma’, the little boy says, “I hear that o

l’ hoot owl again.”

“Yes, honey, I hear him too.”

“Why does the owl hoot, grandma?”

“I don’t know, honey. Maybe becaus

e he is lonely and doesn’t have a lit

-

tle boy owl to keep him company like you do

me.”

And on and on the questions. Fina

lly, the mother calls from the next

room: “Roy, hush. Grandma needs to sleep.”

“You hush,” Grandma admonishes her daug

hter. “Grandma won’t be

around always. Let him talk about the ho

ot owl if he wants to. It’s good

for his imagination.”

This is my earliest memory of my life. I cannot guarantee that the ab

ove

conversation is accurate word-for-

word, but I remember the hoot owl

and my mother admonishing me to hush and my grandmother sticking

up for me. My mother was in ill health and had my brother Billy, tw

o

years my junior and a few months old at that t

ime, to care for. Probably

she needed her sleep too.
