At the recent Briefcase Open, Joe Johnson from Rexair came over for a conversation. He asked me, Are you guys doing, OK? (Meaning the boat business at Rec Boat Holdings). I told him, Yes, we have stable production and are doing well. He said emphatically, Thats great news, because if one goes down, we all go down. That statement really resonated with me. It really is true; there is a trickle effect on the whole com-munity based on the strength of our busi-nesses. Economists would tell you that one new manufacturing job will support seven other jobs. The Cadillac commu-nity enjoys not only a beautiful four-sea-son wonderland, but we are fortunate to have the largest manufacturing footprint north of Grand Rapids.

The other thing that really made me smile about Joes comment is that he really cared about how our business was doing. It wasnt just small talk. He felt personally that he and his company had a vested interest in our success. That is what is great about the Cadillac com-munity; we truly care about the health of all of our businesses. We have learned, sometimes the hard way, that there is strength in numbers.

A key component to bringing us all together is our Cadillac Area Chamber.

Anyone in business can tell you it is ever changing and you have to play an active role just to keep up. That is where the Chamber can help you bridge this gap. They can connect you to other members who have expertise to help your situation.

The Lecture Luncheon Program brings all of us timely education in the course of a lunch. In these programs, you also have the advantage of sharing experiences of other members or hearing questions that you may not have thought of. Did you know that your membership entitles you to a 20 percent discount on tuition at Baker College? This applies to you and your employees. This is a key benefit when more extensive training is required. I enjoy the Rise Up! Cadillac Program. What a quick way to learn whats really happening in your community.

As a small community, we sometimes may feel that our voice is not heard in state government. The Cadillac Area Chamber has brought us together to have an audience with those who repre-sent us. The Governors Breakfast is the best example of this. Annually, we have a chance to voice concerns regarding issues that impact our local businesses. I dont know if you realize how fortunate we are to have this annual exchange. I know we have made an impact on the Governor as well. Our very own Career Tech Center was touted as an example by the Governor on national television.

I know there are many other examples and Chamber programs I could list. Im sure you have your own story to tell. I think we could all agree that there is strength in numbers and our Cadillac Area Chamber bridges the gap to all of our success.

Nominators Kelly Smith and Margo Jacobs couldnt wait to announce the recipient of the 2014 Spirit of Community award at the Chambers Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner.

Each woman counts Bill Panasiewicz as a personal friend. He has earned their admiration for his unassuming ways and tireless com-mitment to help others.

They also joke about his quirky side; he raises chickens, adores his 3-legged dog, and is like a grumpy old man on fishing trips.

Hes a teaser, stated Jacobs. Hes everybodys favorite guy and everybodys favorite Santa Claus.

Panasiewicz is the retired owner of New Image Hair Salon and Spa. Hes a devoted husband, father and grandfather who taught his children to do for others. His career has been intertwined with dedi-cation to numerous charitable causes. Bill has been a longstanding supporter of the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce as a member, Chamber Ambassador Club volunteer, and as a graduate and sup-porter of the Cadillac Leadership program.

I grew up in a household where my dad was always volunteering,

stated his daughter Kathy Fewless. And then I worked with him as a hairdresser for 15 years and thats what we did. Wed spend the day at Lakeview Manor doing free hairdos. He was always doing for somebody else. This has been his whole life and Im glad theres an award for people who do this.

Panasiewicz almost missed the Chamber dinner because he was fishing in Canada with his daughter, Barb, and three granddaugh-ters.

Now I know why my fishing buddies had to come home early, he said when he accepted his award. Im almost speechless, and its a tremendous honor.

In addition to giving himself to community causes, Panasiewicz is known for his generous mentoring to those that worked with him at the salon.

I have always admired Bills ability to run a successful business, stated Chamber President Bill Tencza. But his desire to extend his entrepreneurial spirit to others is truly remarkable. Bill is incredibly selfless in his volunteerism and personally generous to others.

Retired business owner Barbara Darrigan was honored by the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce as the 2014 Outstanding Citizen.

Darrigan was nominated by Linda Kimbel, who told 200 people at the Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner Oh my gosh, why hasnt this happened before? Barb Darrigan is the most amazing woman I have ever met ... she is tireless, she is passionate about the commu-nity, and she really knows what it takes to get the books done.

Darrigan is the co-founder and retired owner of Northern Billing Company. As her business grew, she shared her success with others through mentoring and volunteerism.

With Barb, commitment in any endeavor is 100 percent. She chaired our board and provided outstanding leadership, stat-ed Chamber President Bill Tencza. She has incredible business instincts, conveyed to many through mentoring, which is the ulti-mate professional development resource.

Barb has been on the Cadillac Area Community Foundation board since 2007 and she has truly made a difference on that board, added Kimbel. In addition, Darrigan has served as the treasurer and presi-dent of the Rotary Club, and is the co-founder of the Feeding America Food Distribution. She started and runs a program to provide Marion Elementary School children with weekend meals called Grub to Go through St. Agnes Catholic Church of Marion. Darrigan was a long time member of the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce and served as a board member and as Executive Director in 2002.

Kimbel described Darrigan as a woman with an aptitude for math and finance that borders on genius and a woman with love for God, family and home.

Barb works tirelessly to improve the condition of those around her, and in retirement, shes still giving back. I admire this woman and what she has given to this community, and we are still lucky to have her working and volunteering.

Pine Grove Athletic Club now offering Holistic Lifestyle Coaching

Carolyn Richards and Preston Bo Boatright from Pine Grove Athletic Club recently became CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach Level I Certified, using the cut-ting-edge techniques of world-renowned Holistic Health Practitioner and certi-fied Neuromuscular Therapist Paul Chek; founder of the C.H.E.K Institute in San Diego, California.

The program combines study of the relationship between food and lifestyle habits and the tools to recognize and create individualized eating plans to improve clients health and overall wellness. In addition, a CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach under-stands the important roles that sleep, food quality, stress reduction techniques, and exercise play in improving the health of their clients and learn practical methods that initiate valuable lifestyle changes.

Baker College awards Ed Kurtz scholarship

to Shane WalkerBaker College of Cadillac officials have

announced Shane Walker as the recipient of the $2,500 Ed Kurtz Leadership Scholarship.

Since 2004, this scholarship has been awarded annually in honor of retired president and CEO of Baker College, Ed Kurtz. Students who exemplify Kurtzs leadership style while exhibiting academic achievement, commitment to community ser-vice and a successful balance of work, family and school obligations are eligible for the scholarship.

Shane has juggled family responsibilities, work and volunteering all while maintaining an impres-sive grade point average, said Kelly Smith, Baker College of Cadillac president. He is an excellent role model to his family and friends.

Walker is pursuing a bachelors degree in human services. He holds a 3.85 GPA and has earned a spot on the deans list eight times and the presi-dents list five times while at Baker. Walker will be a first-generation college graduate. E P

David Peterson moderates Upper Michigan Legal Institute

David Peterson, of the Cadillac law firm of Law offices of David R. Peterson,

P.C., recently participated as a moderator at the Upper Michigan Legal Institute.

The two-day conference featured prominent speakers who provided lec-tures and workshops on current developments in various legal topics, and was attended by 80 attorneys from across the state.

Peterson has been selected to serve as a moderator at the conference annu-ally since 1998.

Life Resources receives Cadillac Jeepers donation

Life Resources (formerly Care Net Services) recently received a $2,000 donation from the Cadillac Jeepers organization. Life Resources is a local ministry that works to meet the needs of those unprepared for pregnancy and parenting.
