The church was incorporated during the time of the Civil War on April 25, 1862 as Evangelical Lutheran St. Stephen’s Church. I met with Ned Holderby, Pastor, his wife Suzanne, the church organist and Sally Freeberg, head of the celebration committee, to discuss the church’s history and upcoming celebration. St. Stephen’s refers to itself as a small and mighty (30- 35 members), Good Soil church. According to Jesus’s parable of the sower, true belief takes root in good soil. They told me that the building that is currently the sanctuary existed before, but people wanted a church at the site so the early German families started gathering together there for worship and community. Key family names in the early development and growth of the church include Bartz, Bald, Kohl, Neuman and Bergmann. Some of these have burial plots in the church cemetery and others have descendants who attend to this day. Records in German exist up until 1919; many of these have been transcribed. During the earliest years itinerant pastors led the services. One, Rev. Schindley, used to drive his horse and buggy “all the way out here” from Lockport. One time they even had to go to Lockport themselves to bring him to worship. An early driver of the church was Rev. Vogelmann, who served as pastor from 1919-31. During his tenure, the congregation completed a major renovation of the church including pews, a curved ceiling and altar windows, and also added the church tower. The Ladies Aid Society was formed during this time, and the Church Hall was added in 1931. Historically on the religious side, members of various branches of Lutherans, Calvinists, Congregationalists and the Christian Church had been joining together and defining their denominations over the years. In 1957 Members of the Congregational, Christian, Evangelical, and Reformed traditions joined to form the United Church of Christ. In 1958 Rev. Clarence Gould installed as first full-time pastor of St. Stephen’s UCC. In 1959 a parsonage was dedicated on Tonawanda Creek Road on land donated by Alvin and Evelyn Meahl. Tragedy struck in 1989 when a fire, apparently related to cooking turkeys in the church kitchen, destroyed the church hall and damaged the sanctuary. The congregation bounced back quickly with rebuilding completed under the guidance of master builder, Charles Burd. The sanctuary was gutted and all the pews and woodwork were refinished. They were able to retain the windows. The first service was held in the refurbished sanctuary on Palm Sunday in 1990. The Social Hall was dedicated later that year to the memory of Charlie’s wife, Joan. The church believes its mission is to be part of God’s plan to extend His Kingdom to the world. They show this by expressing God’s desire in area outreach including many activities designed to “love God, love others and serve the world.” They participate in the Neighbors in Need and One Great Hour of Sharing programs sponsored by the United Church of Christ. They also put together shoebox collections for Operation Christmas Child sponsored by Franklin Graham’s organization Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse. org). Currently they are filling “Buckets of Love” with items from different categories of things an immigrant family might need for the International Institute of Buffalo (www.iibuf.org). St. Stephen’s UCC is inviting the public to join in its 150th Anniversary Celebration. St. Stephen’s refers to itself as a small and mighty (30-35 members), Good Soil church.

They were able

to retain the windows.

They also put together shoebox collections for Operation Christmas Child sponsored by Franklin Graham’s organization Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org). Currently they are filling “Buckets of Love” with items from different categories of things an immigrant family might need for the International Institute of Buffalo (www.iibuf.org).

St. Stephen’s has been designated as Town of Clarence landmark by the Historic Preservation Commission. Purpose Statement“We are called by God to share His grace

filled peace, love and joy with all creation.” In our desire to fulfill our purpose in God’s plan, we: Proclaim Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior; Welcome everyone; Thank, worship and praise God; Encourage faith and trust in God for our spiritual growth; Seek to discover and grow our God given gifts; Endeavour to share these gifts with everyone.

Worship services The First English Lutheran Church is

located at 185 Locust Street, Lockport. The Rev. Dr. Flavia Skilbred, pastor, leads Saturday services at 5:30 PM and Sunday services at 10:00 AM, with Sunday School on Sunday from 9:00-9:45 AM for both children and adults, finished in time for children to come to church with their parents. Children’s Sermons are given every other Sunday. The sacrament of

Holy Communion is observed on the first and third Sunday each month and other major Festival Sundays and on every Saturday night service as well. Access to church parking is off High Street on Mack Alley. We have a chairlift accessed off the parking lot. Church office hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-1:00 PM at 716-433-6161. The area community is given a warm invitation to join our congregation for worship and fellowship at Saturday and Sunday services.

Brief HistoryIn Feb. 1837, the Rev. John Selmer came

to Lockport as a missionary and formed a temporary “German Lutheran and Reformed Church.” Several months later the church had become permanent and was now named “The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Village of Lockport.” In 1911 the name of the church was changed to “The First English Lutheran Church of Lockport”

and that name remains today. After several previous locations, the present church at 185 Locust Street, Lockport was dedicated in 1956. This year we celebrate with joy and thanksgiving 175 years dedicated to spreading God’s word and serving the community.

Locust Haven, next to the church, was purchased in 1966 and the name changed to Luther Haven. This building has been entered on both the State Register of Historical Places and the National Register

EVERY SECOND FRIDAY OF THE MONTHGolden Eagles - The Chapel at Crosspoint500 Crosspoint Parkway, GTZVL (631-2636)At The Chapel we value our senior citizens and strive to provide open doors for fellowship and a growing sense of community by enjoying life together. The Golden Eagles Ministry exists to encourage worship and service for those over age 55. We strive to provide open doors for fellowship and foster a growing sense of community by serving side by side. Monthly group gatherings provide a social setting for interaction, companionship and spiritual growth. This interaction is a luncheon event. Monthly luncheons are held the second Friday of every month in the Fireside Room at our Crosspoint location. A group gathering follows each luncheon. Gatherings vary

and often include social networking with games and activities, biblical teaching and discussion, or may be service oriented.  These luncheons and gatherings provide an opportunity for fellowship, fun and food in a light-hearted atmosphere, enabling everyone to become acquainted. Sonrays Ministries, Inc.27th ANNUAL AWARENESS BANQUET

Gala event to benefit family lifeAre you aware that based right here in the

Western New York area, is a “ministry for life” that has been caring for, supporting, and encouraging families throughout Western New York and beyond. Their up and coming banquet spotlights the areas of service they have touched, with the grace of God for over 29years.

To statistically report the number of individuals and families who have been touched by SonRays would be impossible. Ministry areas continue to multiply as the work for Christ moves them to varied regions of the globe and as well as the Western New York area. Childbirth classes, doula support during labor and delivery, post abortion healing workshops and any service that upholds the sanctity of human life are their greatest areas of service.

Both the public and private sector provide funds, volunteer services and co-operative partnership to make it possible for this ministry to bless those who find themselves in a difficult season of life.

You are invited to see and hear how God has been faithfully and miraculously working through SonRays Ministries. You will be amazed by the wonderful testimonies, inspired by the worship music and delightfully informed through a video of the ministry activities.

The banquet will take place at Samuel’s Grande

Everyone has death within him since birth. The process is always in motion. The eyes can see it happen to all others; the ears hear it; and the heart knows its reality. It  can be denied, repressed or acknowledged.  All people have at least thought of what it might be like to take actions that would lead to one’s own death of. Our society calls that irrational thinking and unacceptable behavior. Yet we all, at some time , perform risky behaviors that could bring us close to death; some with tragic results.

Most people who take their own lives never use the word “suicide.” That’a word clinicians and observers use. However, whether conscious of it or not, there is a death-wish inside all people, reason can be positive or negative, but each affects all others connected to them in the most profound ways, evoking intense feelings of anger, guilt and even relief or glee.

Is there a hoped-for retreat to the time before a person was born, fulfilling a wish to never have been born? Is it always an attempt to alleviate the intense pain with which a person lives? Can people fulfill the wishes of others who wish them dead?

One Person’s StoryPeaches was a woman who came to the

conclusion she should never have been born. She realized that her parents were ambitious for a house, cars and the pleasures of life. She concluded she was a “mistake,” being born later in her parents’ life together. They had told her some fish threw her up on the bank of the Mississippi, near where they lived.  In their times of excessive drinking, her parents insisted Peaches serve them their favorite drink. In contrast, her much older brother, Sam, was not called upon to do such things.

The family needed someone to blame for all their troubles and Peaches was bred for the job. She met other girls through school whose homes were far more supportive to their children and she envied them. Peaches’ mother died when she was 12. It sent her into even deeper sadness and confusion about life. She had terrifying memories of her Dad’s hot alcoholic breath, violating her in the dark after she had gone to bed. She lived with intense fears mostly unnamed.

As an adult, her attempt to cut her wrists resulted in a trip to the ER, where the doctor on duty insisted that she see a counselor. Peaches’ husband had gotten into heavy drinking and did not want to stay connected to her with her suicidal tendencies. He decided to divorce her.

Peaches trusted her counselor enough to unravel her life story. She concluded that she wanted to end her life because she was a “total loser,” no good to anyone else and certainly not to herself. The counselor raised the question of where God was in all this. She had been a church goer even though her family was not. The nun’sat the church down the block from her childhood home had befriended her, and she once entertained thoughts of trying to fit into church life somewhere, but that thought disappeared when she married. Shet doubted that God had any use for her, but noted that it was her faith that brought her through the worst of times . Peaches seemed to identify with a suffering Jesus, who was always in his heavenly Father’s tormenting hands.

There were days when she spent an hour with the counselor in near silence; other times in tears. Once she brought a paper bag. Inside was a ceramic doll and a hammer. She took out the hammer and put back the doll. Peaches spent the hour smashing that doll inside the bag and sobbing as she did.

She regained her composure even smiled as she returned the hammer to the bag and left. During her next counseling hour, she explained what she had done. Peaches, smiling, related that the doll had been given to her by her mother who told her she should be a real doll someday. By smashing it, Peaches announced that could never be that doll. In later reflection she shared that it was probably better to smash the doll than to take her own life.

Peaches related other painful stories about her childhood , many with tears and clinched fists punching the sofa on which she sat. She feared leaving counseling. The counselor assured her that she could return at anytime. Peaches soon found a job working in a dress store. She thought she could handle it but wondered if her abiding depression would ever lift. Reluctantly she told her counselor good-bye, acknowledging that she wouldn’t be alive now if he hadn’t been there for her.

One day she broke out sobbing when somebody told her how beautiful she looked in one of the store’s dresses. Later, when her store manager asked her about it , Peaches revealed some of her depression about losing her mother and no longer having someone compliment her on her appearance. The manager suggested she see a counselor. Peaches nodded in agreement.

At home, Peaches stared at the empty bath tub with the razor on the edge. She sunk to her knees and prayed for help. The next day she contacted her counselor realizing the she had crossed another bridge. It was time to take the next step in her journey toward wholeness.

Different Colored Boats

20 — CCC Bulletin — April 2012

ChrisTiaN MEdiaby: Kein Walker

“The book Different Colored Boats are collected writings that will discuss different teachings of the various relationships with God. The title comes from a friend of mine who coined the phrase. In a discussion one day about the community group

that I established (which works with churches of many denominations to meet and address community needs); he confided in me that he has realized that all Christians are on the same water, trying to get to the same place, just in “different colored boats”

The book is authored by the CCC Director, Kevin Walker, who spent the better part of a year collecting over 200 sermons and selecting the ones that gave a unique perspective. Various denominations, writing styles and stories are used throughout the book to illustrate

the point. In addition to the sermons there is a personal testimony and anonymous stories. The book is available for purchase through the publisher’s website Publish America, at: http://www.publishamerica.net/product15528.html

Mark 9:9“And as they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man should rise from the dead.”

John 3:16-17“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him.

BY JEFF KEEFE The Caiaphas mentioned

in the New Testament was Joseph, the son of Caiaphas and the son-in-law of the former high priest Annas, 6-15 A.D. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus is the source of much of our information about Judea in the 1st century. He says Valerius Gratus, the Roman prefect (governor) appointed Joseph Caiaphas High Priest in 18 A.D. He also states that the Syrian proconsul replaced him as High Priest in 36 A.D.

First and foremost Caiaphas was a Sadducee. They were supported by the wealthy and the many from the priestly class, especially the wealthier priests. The Sadducees were about wealth and power and found cooperation with Rome to be in their interests. John

11:50 quotes Caiaphas as saying, “You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish” (NIV). As a whole, the sect fulfilled various political, social and religious roles, including maintaining the Temple.

The Sadducees and Pharisees were often in conflict, not just for their differing religious beliefs, but also politically. It was about a century earlier that Alexander Jannaeus, a pro-Sadducee ruler (103 B.C. – 76 B.C.) of the Hasmonean Kingdom, an independent Jewish state, crucified 800 Pharisees for supporting a rebellion against him.

According to Josephus, the Sadducees believed that, there is no fate, that God does not commit evil, that “man has the free choice of good or evil,”

that the soul is not immortal; there is no afterlife and there are no rewards or penalties after death and that only the Pentateuch was authoritative. The Book of Acts reports they did not believe in angels.

Caiaphas served longer than any of Annas’ five sons who also served as High Priest in the 1st century. He must have been very adept in terms of political power and the ability to juggle the interests of the Roman Empire and the Jerusalem Temple. Caiaphas had ten years experience in dealing with Roman governors before Pilate arrived on the scene.

In 1990 an ornately decorated limestone ossuary (bone box) was found in Jerusalem’s Peace Forest. In the ossuary were the bones of two babies, an adolescent child, a teenage

boy, an adult woman, and a man about 60 years of age. It was a common practice for the bones of deceased members of a family to be in the same ossuary. An Aramaic inscription on the side (shown on the right) reads “Joseph son of Caiaphas.” Do the bones of the 60 year old man belong to the Caiaphas of the New Testament? The bones have been re-buried on the Mount of Olives.

A woman was at work when she received a phone call that her daughter was very sick with a fever. She left her work and stopped by the pharmacy to get some medication for her daughter. Upon returning to her car she found that she had locked her keys in the car. She didn’t know what to do, so she bowed her head and asked God to send her some help.Within five minutes an old rusty car pulled up, with a dirty, greasy, bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag on his head. The man got out of his car and asked her if he could help. He said, “Sure”. He walked over to the car, and in less than one minute the car was opened. She hugged the man and through her tears she said, “Thank You So Much! You are a very nice man.”The man replied, “Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison yesterday. I was in prison for car theft and have only been out less than 24 hours.”The woman hugged the man again and with sobbing tears cried out loud, “Oh, Thank you God! You even sent me a Professional! “God may not always send us what we expect, but He will always send us what we need. It’s up to us to have the wisdom to recognize the difference and be thankful. - Author Unknown
