Each lasts about two hours. I attended the last class of the spring session. Susan Whited, the pastor’s wife, started the evening with a prayer and review questions from the prior week. The class watched a video with an inspirational story and a lesson from Dave Ramsey, the radio host and NY Times best-selling author. During the second hour, class members engaged in small-group discussion. FPU teaches participants how to make the right decisions with money and empowers students with the practical skills and confidence needed to experience true financial peace. It gives hope, decreases financial stress, answers questions and may also ease marital stress as couples learn to talk openly and honestly with each other about the role money plays in their lives. The video lesson for the evening was the culmination of all the previous lessons. Called, “The Great Misunderstanding - Unleashing the Power of Generous Giving,” Ramsey taught that the misunderstanding, the paradox we all believe, is that the way to have more is to hold on tightly. What that perception misses, however, is the Biblical teaching that “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” (Psalm 24:1) Ramsey explained that we are asset managers for the Lord, acting as his stewards. As stewards, we are only here to manage what He has given us, not own it. Once we are relieved of the stress of worrying about money, we are free to give more to charitable causes. Since we are designed in God’s image, we are happiest and most fulfilled when we are serving others and giving. According to research conducted by Dave Ramsey’s organization, the average family pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in the first 91 days of participating in the program. The cost is usually around $100 for a lifetime family membership and includes all class materials. Participants receive audio discs of all 13 lessons, a workbook, access to online tools, a Financial Peace Revisited book, and a deluxe envelope system for cash-based accounting. Members can study online but many prefer the group environment as they work together to achieve goals. If you already have a member kit, you can participate in the class anytime for free. I spoke with Jason Christ from First Trinity, who said the program has provided a deeper understanding of how to help people realize the importance of giving. He feels it has a huge impact in the lives of class members. Based on 30 responses to a survey conducted with the last class, 22 responded that they had some level of anxiety regarding finances before taking the class while only one felt financial anxiety afterwards. In the same survey, 27 people responded positively regarding whether they felt closer to God after taking the course - nine in fact answered this question with the highest rating. Prior to participating, some people felt that finances had become their “religion” and gained control over their lives. Thanks to all those who support our efforts!!! What do learning money management principles and controlling debt have to do with spiritual wellness? Everything, it turns out. First Trinity Lutheran Church is sponsoring a program called Financial Peace University (FPU), which teaches Biblical principles of money management. It’s billed as a total money makeover program, but is really more of a spiritual attitude adjustment. Classes are usually small in size, with sessions held once a week for thirteen weeks.

What that perception misses, however, is the Biblical teaching that “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” (Psalm 24:1) Ramsey explained that we are asset managers for the

Lord, acting as his stewards.

I feel truly blessed that things continue and that we are expanding into other communities in WNY.

July 2011 — CCC Bulletin — 3

The class teaches that 80% of financial peace is behavioral. Implementing the lifestyle changes that are taught and continuing to follow the principles learned can help restore control and balance, so students can focus on the more important goals in life.

One class member, Joel, said that he and his wife had no plan, and wanted to get a handle on where their money goes so they can plan for the future. He feels it provides good plans and resources, and provides a solid foundation for those who stick to it.

Cheryl shared that she had experienced a series of set-backs in her life which forced her to make difficult financial choices. After listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio, and starting some of the steps herself, she found the program at First Trinity and began attending with a friend. Initially she only wanted reinforcement of the

radio lessons, but found much more. She feels it made her more conscious about money. Her goal now is to save and invest money, so she won’t have to worry again if life throws her another curve ball. She enjoyed the clarity of the principles presented and felt she really understood and appreciated the concept of being God’s steward.

Jason summarized by saying that everyone can benefit from the program, regardless of age, income or marital status. The next class at First Trinity starts in September. They plan to hold three concurrent courses - final details will be on the church’s web site. He emphasized that the course is open to everyone, not just church members.

If you’re looking for an organized, fun and educational activity for your kids this summer, consider Vacation Bible School at the Church of the Nativity, 1530 Colvin Boulevard near Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda.  Nativity’s vacation bible school runs August 8 – 12 from 9:30am ‘til noon each day, and is for kids 3 yrs. old and up to those entering 6th grade.  The cost for the entire week is just $10.00/child or $30.00/family.

Nativity is affiliated with the United

Church of Christ, and all are welcome. This adult-run vacation bible school will include music, crafts, games, and snacks.  And the children will learn about God’s amazing love through our Parable productions and Bible stories.

Each year Nativity’s vacation bible school participates in a mission project, and this year we’ll be collecting school supplies for students in need who attend Herbert Hoover Middle School (right next door).

For details on Vacation Bible School

at the Church of the Nativity and for a registration form, call the church office at 875-3365 or visit Nativity on the Web atNativityUCC.org.
