Association Maps Out Course To Better Serve The Industry

The National Concrete Burial Association Board of Directors recently took on the enormous task of developing a long-range strategic plan designed to position the association to fulfill member needs well into the next decade. The two-day intensive session laid out a vision and mapped a direction that, when finished,

will guide the future membership services provided by the organization. Recognizing that NCBVA is the voice of the burial vault industry that serves the needs

of the death care profession, members of the board looked at the rganization's core values. It was agreed that NCBVA stood for hon-esty, integrity, continuing education, a commitment to providing qual-ity products and services, and the sharing of important information. Within that framework, it was decided that one future direction for NCBVA would be a commitment to excellence within the industry.

In order to help the organization implement the plan, the board ranked, in order of importance, the immediate and long-range tasks which will need to be accomplished. The primary short term position of NCBVA will be to help its members succeed, followed closely by increasing the association's visibility to markets inside and outside the death care indus-try. The issue of NCBVA visibility also placed in the top three issues for the long term. Placing third in the short term tasks, but a number one goal of the association for the long term will be to grasp a better understand of the market and its members.

The board also took a look at the organization and industry strengths, as they are today, and weaknesses .as they relate to the future. The specifics of these areas will be summarized in future issues of The Bulletin.

The main issues, and their priorities, which will guide the direction of NCBVA in the next three to five years will be to:

Promote the organization's manufacturing standards throughout the burial vault industry, Attract quality members, Help our members succeed, Understand the market, Increase NCBVA's visibility, Enhance NCBVA's government presence, Review NCBVA's organizational structure, and Design a way to bring needed new funds into the organization. A next step in the plan's development will be to finalize the specific direction and

wording followed by a detailed membership survey which will assess member needs for the next three to five years. As the plan and survey develops additional information will be provided in future issues of The Bulletin.

President's Message By Tim Brutsche

You Must Participate To Reap the Benefits!

B y now you should have received your convention program and registration for "Family and The Future," our Annual Convention & Exposition to be

held June 21-23 at the Pocono Manor Inn in Pennsylvania. I would like to personally invite each and every member of NCBVA (and prospective

members, too) to attend; you will not regret the time and money spent.

This theme is very appropriate since most of our mem-bers businesses are family owned and operated. This is a perfect time to network with others in the same industry who are facing the same problems—not only those busi-ness problems with customers and employees, but the per-sonal problems we face when working with our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and children.

The last year has gone by quickly. I have been extremely fortunate to have served with one of the best board of di-rectors that NCBVA has ever had—each and every one of the board has exhibited total commitment to the future of our association.

We recently held a special meeting with a professional strategic planner to help chart the future for NCBVA. We made a substantial investment of time and money to assure that we would develop a plan for continued success. We can no longer afford to be static—we must move on and continue to provide additional services to our members, the lifeblood of this association.

Your participation in the activities of the association is essential. Just as you need to be physically active for your personal health, you need to be personally active for your association's health. In today's business environment, what you don't know will defi-nitely hurt you!

As I leave the board and join the outstanding group of past presidents, I ask only one thing—be active, support your association, support the suppliers to your association and provide input to your incoming board of directors. By doing so you ensure your own success as well as the future success of NCBVA—an association that will be here for your descendants in this fine industry.

Monks Work Silently to Create Simple Handmade Caskets

ina small Iowa abbey, 36 Trappist monks work silently as they handcraft simple-caskets of oak, walnut, ash and pine.

Now, for the first time since the re-treat was founded in 1949, their handcrafted prod-ucts will be avail-able to the public.

Trappist Cas-kets is an exten-sion of an activi-ty that has been taking place at New Melleray Abbey for the past 150 years; the making of honest wood cas-kets which reflect

"Then they are truly monastics when they live by the labor of their hands"

Rule of St Benedict

their sincere and direct approach to death. The business venture was launched about a year and a half ago to offset the abbey's dwin-dling farm profits but they were only sold to funeral homes and distributors or used for their own abbey members.

Trappists belong to the Cistercian tradi-tion, which calls for a life of manual labor and contemplative prayer. The monks re-main silent for at least half the day as part of a vow of obedience.

All the wood for the caskets comes from the forest which surrounds the abbey. The monks mill the logs into boards in their saw-mill and then craft the caskets in their wood-working shop. They then upholster the cas-kets with a muslin liner. The monks pro-duce about 300 caskets a year and sell them for $550 to $1,385. The simplicity, work-

manship, and affordability of the product seems to appeal to many people, especially the baby boomers who are looking for more personal, less traditional funeral arrange-ments.

The enterprise has only one paid em-ployee who manages the business and mar-keting side of Trappist Caskets which are marketed on a Web site; the monksalso talk with potential customers at the abbey's show-room.

April 2001 NCBVA BULLETIN 5

This article first appeared in The Bulletin in December, 1997 and is being reprinted at members' request.

you might be asking, why is Scott interested in discussing tents"? It may come as a surprise t some members to learn that over the past six or seven months, I have received a

number of requests for advice and recommendations regarding the use of tents owned by vault manufacturers.

I have researched the liability of funeral directors/vault manu-facturers for supplying defective or inappropriate erected tents. To date, the only court decisions involving tents deal with charges by the public against the funeral director and vault manufacturer un-der a breach of contract for not providing a tent which had been ordered or for supplying an unclean, unsightly tent. I did not find any cases dealing with liability for injuries, etc. If any of the read-ers of this article have personal experience or know of any litiga-tion or insurance claims for liability due to use of their tents, please send information to NCBVA.

The potential liability for tents can be broken down into four or

Photo courtesy of Puckett Supply Co., Inc.

five different categories: (1) A tent supplied and erected by the vault manufacturer for service at the cemetery; (2) A vault manufacturer's tent with cemetery personnel erecting said tent; (3) A tent left in place for hours after the cemetery service; (4) And, of course, the proverbial damage allegedly done by the erection of a tent for the cemetery service.

In speaking with many vault manufacturers, I find that the gen-erally accepted practice (with which I concur) is that no tent shall be used for cemetery service unless it is erected by the vault manufacturer's personnel, and that such personnel remove said tent shortly after the service is concluded and the family and friends have departed.

In the few instances where a vault manufacturer allows cem-etery personnel to erect the tent, the vault manufacturer should obtain a release and hold harmless agreement to protect himself from potential liability for improper erection of the tent.

The most potentially troublesome uses of your tents are when they are utilized for purposes other than the cemetery and funeral service. As a gesture of community goodwill, many vault manufac-turers will allow their tents to be used free of charge for local char-ity events, weddings, parties, etc. In my opinion, such usage greatly enhances your chance of liability for injury to individuals involved in the event. In this regard, I understand that vault men will provide their tents free of charge, including setting them up and tearing them down with their own personnel; renting with the use of their own personnel setting up and tearing them down; or renting or providing tents free of charge with the users setting them up and tearing them down. Allowing a user to set up and tear down created unnecessary potential liability. I recommend that vault men, if asked to provide a tent for a purpose other than cemetery service, rent them for a fee comparable to the price charged by the local com-mercial rental companies. However, we all know that vault men are often "forced" to provide tents for the funeral director's customer, a daughter's high school party, etc. When faced with this situation be sure that your tents are erected and town down by vault personnel.

If you are renting your tents for public use, it is most important that they be made of fire retardant material. You should have a certificate, either on the tent or in your possession, indicating that said tent is made of fire retardant material.

Several vault men have indicated that local fire chiefs will dis-allow the use of a tent if fire is going to used such as grilling or even smoking unless the tent is made of fire retardant material.

Vaults Require High Quality Concrete Mixes By Earl J. Brutsche

T here are many factors that one has to be concerned about when talking about quality concrete. There are

many kinds of concrete. Let's take a look at a mix design for a driveway in a northern

part of our country. You would want to start with a design which contained five percent to 7 percent air-entraining admixture, 1" coarse aggregate, fine ag-gregate and type 1 cement plus water and end up with a 2" slump. Your mix de-

sign would look like this:

1,700 lbs 1" course aggregate

1,300 lbs natural sand

658 lbs type I cement

250 lbs water

5 oz air admix This would produce a psi of 4500 pounds

in 28 days which is good concrete for what it is intended for.... A concrete drive in a northern climate which is subject to freeze-thaw problems

But for a quality mix design for burial vaults you need a much different and richer design such as the following:

1,450 lbs of 'A" crushed coarse aggre-gate

1,450 lbs of natural sand

800 lbs of type I or I/II Portland cement

316 pounds of water (38 gallons) This will give you a workable 6" slump

6,000-psi in 28 days but most important is that you get triple the strength of the other mix design in 16 hours, and this is what you need to handle the unit during stripping and storing the morning after casting.

It also stands to reason the higher 6,000 pound-psi makes for a much stronger unit. In no case should a unit be delivered with

less than 4,500 psi.

There are many other things that go into making quality concrete such as rein-forcing, aggregate, and curing, but these will

be address in future news articles.

INDUSTRY NEWS AND NOTES

Harden Tenders Resignation from NFDA Robert Harden, executive director of the 13,500-member National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) has resigned his position after nearly 15 years.

In an NFDA press release, President John Carmon said, "His [Harden's] leadership has helped NFDA grow to hold the premier position among funeral service associations and helped NFDA be-come a fiscally responsible association that has grown and pros-pered during his tenure. Harden oversaw the construction of NFDA's new facility in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and created the Washing-ton, DC., office four years ago. He helped create a new membership driven governance structure that has positioned NFDA for the new millennium.

Christine Pepper, NFDA's assistant executive director, has been appointed acting executive director, and the Board will appoint a special task force to search for Harden's successor. All of NFDA's

events and programs will continue as planned. The NFDA 12t1 Convention & International Expositon is scheduled for Octo-

ber 7-10, 2001 in Orlando, Florida.

Hillenbrand sees profit Casket and medical equipment maker Hillenbrand Industries Inc. said that its first-quarter earnings per share before charges rose, due in part to improved gross profit margins. The Batesville, Indiana-based company reported earnings before realignment charges of 61 cents per share, compared with 55 cents per share a year ago. The company reported net income of $25 million, or 40 cents per diluted share, compared with $36 million, or 58 cents per share, a year ago.

Attend Funeral Online A Canadian based company is preparing to allow funeral directors across North American to Webcast funerals, memorial services and burials live on the Internet. Funeral-cast.com believes Webcasts are gaining in acceptance among those who would otherwise be kept away from paying their last respects because of distance, cost, work or health reasons.
