OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

The readings of the Easter season uplift our spirits, yet leave room for our minds and hearts to imagine: wouldn’t it be great if we witnessed “signs and wonders” like those who saw the Risen Lord? Wouldn’t it be nice to witness cures and miracles? Better, to experience one personally! This human need for confirmation, certitude, reassurance and the guarantee these provide, are part and parcel of our human condition. Given human weakness, even the Apostles and disciples weren’t sure or secure after witnessing so much. They were ever susceptible to doubts and the subtle dangers of free will. Welcome to the human race! Still, these Easter stories lay a foundation for us. They help us understand trust is the lifeline of faith: we believe and follow even when our frailty is attracted elsewhere. This trust is the source of our hope whenever we need to refocus and repent. Each time we experience the presence of God, the many instances and unexpected ways this happens, our faith deepens into a conviction which shapes our lives. The ways this happens to us is often mysterious. Certainly few have the experience so powerfully expressed in the Gospel, the story of Thomas. His experience earned him the unwelcome and lasting label “doubting Thomas”. We know the story. I sense, in our inner selves, we can relate to him with sympathy and understanding: “I’d probably do the same thing,” is an honest statement, at least for me. Given how difficult life is at times, we seek any kind of security and certitude in dealing with our hidden fears, doubts and insecurities. Sometimes people choose false ways to achieve this (wealth, power, status, righteousness). Thomas gave up his livelihood, home and family to follow Jesus. With Jesus dead, like the others, he is fearful and worried for the future. Told Jesus is alive, he demands proof; “ I won’t take your word for it!” Sounds logical and human to me. Of course, Jesus comes and Thomas is moved to cry out, “My Lord and my God!’ Jesus’ response energizes us with His promise, “Blessed are they who don’t have this privilege of seeing Me, but believe” regardless. Such faith awakens us to recognize the signs and wonders, cures and miracles that take place daily, often around us. What is needed are the eyes of faith!

EASTER BLESSING OF HOMES The head of the home conducts this blessing in the presence of the family by reciting:

BLESSING In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Peace to this home and all who dwell here. Lord, we rejoice in the victory of your Son over death;

by rising from the tomb to new life He gives us new hope and promise. Bless all the members of this house hold and surround them with your protection,

may they find comfort and peace in Jesus Christ, the Paschal Lamb, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The head of the house may sprinkle those present and the home with holy water, during the sprinkling the head of house may say:

Let this water call to mind our Baptism in Christ, Who by His death and Resurrection has redeemed us.

The head of the house concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the Sign of the Cross and saying: May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and for ever. Amen PASTORAL COUNCIL 1. We met with a representative from the Planning & Zoning from the City of Denver.
