Dear Children, Families and Staff,

The School Year is well under way with the children honing their reading, writing and numeracy skills. Throughout the year we make significant use of PAT Literacy and Numeracy reports and the PAT Resource Centre to support, record, implement, evaluate, seek feedback to guide teachers in their learning programs for your children. You may not realise it but we work closely with the Australian Council of Educational Research for the benefit of the teachers and our students.

One aspect of our work in Literacy and Numeracy is the notion of “differentiation” which means the way in which we ensure that our teaching targets the “gaps” in children’s learning thus ensuring each child can access the whole curriculum by building on their strengths.

• PAT testing indicates where we can differentiate to meet children’s needs;• PAT helps us to identify differentiated learners in the classroom;• PAT assists us to develop differentiated approaches in the class: face to face and online.

BUILDING PROGRAM AT HOLY FAMILY

Successful schools maintain a vibrant and visionary program of ensuring that the built environment of the school is up to date and reflects contemporary thinking and technology.

A sound Physical Education program assists the fitness of young people and helps their progress in learning. The new Netball/Basketball Courts at the rear of the school next to the ELC will be a welcome addition.

A new double-sided electronic sign will be erected in April informing the community of new developments at the school and the Alive ELC here at Holy Family.

Other buildings and spaces to be named with signs include:• The Exploration Room in the THE CENTRE;• The Mary MacKillop Building: the two-storey classroom block;• The St Vincent de Paul Building: the single-storey building near the fixed playground;• The St Joseph building: the single-

storey building next to the Staff Room;

• The Pope John Paul 11 Building: The Hall;

• St Francis Piazza.

Naming these buildings and spaces imbues our school with a sense of our history and Catholic Identity. There is a clear narrative of service to others and following the examples of exemplary followers of Jesus.

The historic old transportable classrooms which have been on site since the 1980’s are being moved to make way for the new Learning Hub which will house our books and learning resources and a plethora of learning spaces for STEM and integrated studies for the Fish Farm and multi-age groups.

THE MUDLA: The Multi-Disciplinary Learning Area

The re-located MUDLA building will re-open at the end of February when the paving of the area is completed and the rainwater tank and the storm-water system is connected.

The new building features a new veranda and decking area which w a s r e - c y c l e d f r o m t h e o l d transportable area.

FISH FARM SAUSAGE SIZZLE

Holy Family will be hosting a Sausage Sizzle at Aggie’s Aquarium to celebrate their 20th Birthday and raise money for our Fish Farm.

Aggie’s Aquarium will have many sales and specials on the day (please check their facebook page for more information. There will also be a raffle. Every $20 you spend you will receive a ticket to the raffle.

FROM THE APRIM

On Friday, 14th February, we celebrate Saint Valentine’s feast day. I think what is important to note that this day is not just about flowers, chocolates and cards but who this day is named after and why he became a Saint.

Valentine was a holy priest in Rome, who, with his family, assisted the Christians imprisoned under Claudius 11. He was apprehended, and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, who tried to make him renounce his faith. When he refused he sentenced him to death. The charges were for marrying couples and aiding persecuted Christians. Saint Valentine was executed on February 14, about the year 270. Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole to his memory.

A famous story about Saint Valentine was when he was on house arrest with Judge Asterius. While discussing religion and faith with the Judge, Valentine pledged the validity of Jesus. The judge immediately put Valentine and his faith to the test.

St. Valentine was presented with the judge's blind daughter and told to restore her sight. If he succeeded, the judge vowed to do anything for Valentine. Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored the child's vision.

Judge Asterius was humbled and obeyed Valentine's requests. Asterius broke all the idols around his house, fasted for three days and became baptised, along with his family and entire 44-member household. The now faithful judge then freed all of his Christian inmates.

PARISH CARNIVAL

Dear Friends,

The 2020 Salisbury Catholic Parish Carnival is here again, and we are all excited about it. This biennial event has become a Salisbury tradition, as people of all ages come from all around to enjoy the food, games and rides. The Parish Carnival Committee under the able leadership of Arlene Jasper, Sue Knight and Dn. Arturo along with PPC and several volunteers, began preparation in February 2019 and has put together an event designed for the enjoyment of people, young and old. The committee’s ultimate goal is to make this year’s carnival the best one yet! People of Salisbury are from different continents and traditions. This is an opportunity for us to celebrate our differences and to know each other better. This time of togetherness will help us bond as one community while recognising the talents and valuing the diverse cultures and perspectives of one another.

Carnival rides and food will be a major draw and activities will include children’s games, delicious food prepared by various parish groups, and the Raffle and opportunities to win outstanding prizes, apart from the soccer game for our youngsters and entertaining performances by various teams. May I take this opportunity to invite each of you along with your family and friends to St. Augustine’s Parish carnival on Sunday 16th February 2020 from 12noon – 4:00pm.

HEARTY WELCOME FR. SANTOSH PEREIRA MSFS This weekend Fr. Santosh Pereira MSFS joins our parish team. On behalf of all the parishioners, I take this opportunity to welcome Fr. Santosh to the Salisbury Parish team. Fr. Santosh S/o Paul and Jakin was born on 18th June 1986 at Haliyal, in the state of Karnataka in India. He is the 5th of 6 children to his parents. He has 1 elder sister, 3 elder brothers and 1 younger brother. He had his primary and high school education at Haliyal. He joined SFS Seminary, Ettumanoor, Kerala in June 2002 and completed his minor seminary in 2005. He completed Novitiate in 2006 and made his first profession on June 11, 2006 and became a member of MSFS Congregation. After completing graduation in Philosophy and Theology Santosh made his perpetual profession on 29 May 2012. He was ordained a deacon on 24 February 2013 and ordained a priest on December 27, 2013. After his ordination he served at Holy Rosary Church, Kundapur, in the diocese of Udupi and at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Health in the Diocese of Shimogga in Karnataka. In June 2015 Santosh was appointed as the Formator, Vocation Director and Administrator in the minor seminary of the province. In May 2016 he was appointed Secretary to the Provincial. After a term he was designated to the Archdiocese of Adelaide and arrived here in July 2019. After serving St Francis Xavier Cathedral parish for the last 7 months he is now appointed to St Augustine’s parish, Salisbury, with effect from 15th February 2020. We wish Fr. Santosh a fruitful ministry and a pleasant stay in Salisbury. I request all the parishioners to kindly take time to personally welcome Fr. Santosh and to get to know this dynamic young priest.

Laptops The laptops are a great tool for the students. Here are a few tips for looking after them:

• No food or drink near the laptop;• Store in a safe and dry area;• Use in a dry area (ie not near sinks or wash areas);• Do not run or walk with the laptop in the open position;• Do not run with the laptop;• Always ensure the protective cover is on and not

tampered with.

School routines:• SCHOOL START - School starts at 8.50am, children must be under supervision of adults at all

times. Yard Duty begins at 8.30am, if they arrive earlier they need to attend OSHC;• LATE ARRIVALS - If your child is later than 8.50am they must sign in at Student Reception;

• SCHOOL FINISH - School finishes at 3pm if you cannot collect your child by 3.10pm, they need to go to OSHC;

• PICK UP/DROP OFF SAFETY - Please use the Kiss and Drop Zone and DO NOT drop off your children in the car parks or park in Disabled Zones … it is illegal;

• SAFETY - Please don’t walk on the driveways, use the footpaths, don’t walk in or out of the vehicle entry/exit gates;

• LABELLING - please label all removable clothing (ie. jumpers, jackets, hats), label school bags, drink bottles, lunch boxes and anything else your child may bring;

• PERSONAL ITEMS - No toys, electronics or sports equipment to be brought to school (laptops available for lease Years R-1 and provided for Years 2-6, sports equipment available from class

teacher);• NUT FREE - A reminder we are a nut free school. This includes but is not limited to Nutella,

Peanut Butter and some muesli bars.• STAFF CAR PARK - The inside carpark is for STAFF only.

• GATES - All gates are locked everyday at 9.15am and re-opened at 2.15pm. During these times you must come through the front office and sign in.
