BSG NEWS October 2015

BSG AWARDS 2015 AWARD WINNERS: BSG Project Award for best Health and Safety in Planning and Design Winner - T & B Contractors Ltd

BSG Judges’ Comment

BSG’s Project Award was presented to T & B Contractors whose main works division demonstrated meticulous Health and Safety planning when faced with a challenging environment at the Windmill Children’s centre based in Greenford, London.

Company operatives were required to work in close proximity working inside and adjacent to children and staff at this Special Educational Needs (SEN) centre. This necessitated close liaison with the centre staff by the project team with careful planning to ensure that effective plans were in place before each phase of the works commenced. Particular considerations included:

• Ensuring that the fire arrangements for both the centre and the construction site were in place, taking into account the changed routes and in certain circumstances, changed alarm systems.

• Planning noisy works (as some of the children in the centre were particularly sensitive to noise)

BSG Environmental Award: for the company best able to demonstrate how a recently implemented system has had a positive impact on the environment

Winner - Shaylor Group

BSG Judges’ Comment The BSG Environmental Award Winner was given to Shaylor Group for the significant contribution made in ensuring a high profile, eco-friendly project continues to be run to exemplary Health, Safety and Environmental standards.

Only the third of its kind globally, the project has attracted national and international media attention, involving the implementation of a series of complex monitoring systems designed to measure the impact of CO2 on the climate, chart environmental changes to woodland flora and fauna and measure the resilience of trees to pestilence and disease. The site is unique with many unique challenges, not only to the company but also to visiting BSG advisers, including the installation of towers within the woodland using a helicopter as lifting equipment. Systems implemented will only measure and not contribute to the environmental disturbance, which means access to the site is restricted to authorised personnel only via a biometric recognition system.

There are two projects are taking place simultaneously, one based in the UK with the other located in an Australian rain forest. Protection systems have also been set up to protect endangered species known to inhabit each area.

BSG AWARDS 2015 AWARD WINNERS: BSG Small Business of the year Award: for a smaller BSG member able to provide strong evidence of exceptional achievement in Health Safety Winner - Hydra Capsule

BSG Judges’ Comment

The BSG Small Business Award was presented to Hydra Capsule for embarking on a programme of continued improvement in Health and Safety culture, enabling the company to build and sustain a competitive advantage in the specialist market-place of Heavy Duty Jacking Systems. Practical steps taken to achieve this improvement included:

• Gaining the Construction Line Accreditation 118160- allowing Hydra Capsule to identify essential key health and safety procedures and incorporate them into its works operation

• Gaining the SSIP Acclaim Accreditation 24415, ensuring the company achieved the required Health and Safety competence levels.

• Implementing a training programme that resulted in all supervisors and managers gaining SSSTS or SMSTS qualifications and some undergoing TWC (temporary works coordinator) training.

• Annual Health and Safety awareness training for all employees which has resulted in raising the standard of compliance throughout the entire company and ensuring that everyone has a clear understanding of what is required of them.

• Requiring that employees attend PTS (pass track safety) courses – which helps to ensure personnel are medically / physically fit to work on high risk operations / areas.

The benefits of these achievements have been:

• A business cost reduction by lessening the company’s accident frequency rate, reducing incidents of absenteeism and lessening the threat of litigation.

• Enhancing the company’s reputation for corporate responsibility among its peers, clients, investors and the business community in general.

BSG Subcontractor of the year Winner - LMH Civil Engineering Ltd

BSG Judges’ Comment The BSG Subcontractor of the Year award was presented to LMH Civil Engineering for its introduction of a ‘best in class’ ‘Health, Safety and Environmental Management System’, proving its commitment to embrace new safety systems and equipment procedures.

LMH’s drive for ‘best practice innovation’ was aptly demonstrated in the fitting of “boxing ring” fall protection to the rear of all the company’s 360 excavators, to protect drivers when servicing machines.

By working closely with The Building Safety Group, active monitoring systems were introduced utilising the BSG inspections to target certification, dust and noise control and manual handling issues.

This BSG member also adopted a practical approach, making positive changes to the internal culture of the organisation that will ensure a safer and healthier working environment for all its employees.

Occupational Health and well-being initiative Award Winner - City & Country

During the awards presentation City & Country presented a case study which illustrated why they were the worthy winners of the BSG Occupa-tional Health and Well-Being initiative award.

Andy McGoldrick, Regional Construction Manager for City and Country de-livered an insightful presentation about the restoration project of the Bristol General Hospital timber window refurbishment that was undertaken.

The restoration of the Grade II listed external elevations involved 500 timber windows being restored. Each window, some dating back to the 1850s, was covered in significant layers of lead paint. The outcome needed to be cost effective, time efficient and have low occupation health risks.

The options of heating and scraping or sanding to remove the paint were both rejected due to respiratory concerns. So City & Country created a steam cabinet system on site which removed lead paint without having to abrade the surface of the existing windows, significantly reducing the health risks normally associated with this procedure.

Removing the windows and taking them to a workshop to strip off the paint, also significantly reduced the amount of time workers were exposed to working at height risks. Additionally, the new steaming procedure made the job more efficient and ensured a higher quality finish.

Well done to City & Country for delivering such a high level of service, it was a great pleasure to present the company with this award.

BSG AWARDS 2015 AWARD WINNERS:

BSG Member of the Year: South West Winner - Greendale Construction Ltd BSG Judges’ Comment

This award was presented to a BSG member who overcame a series of strategic and logistical Health and Safety challenges posed during the ‘Hall & Woodhouse Brewery’ project in Blandford, which required a tactical approach to Health and Safety planning. Challenges faced during the project included:

• Carrying out tandem lifts (using two cranes) for the placement of sixteen 8.5 tonne 50 ft. high stainless steel vessels

• Ensuring safe site access by installing precision cut steel floors within very fine tolerances of 125mm clearance

• Pouring 600 cubic metres of concrete to create a 2500 square metre concrete slab

• Successfully managing all the Health and Safety risks associated with the demolition and rebuilding of the main packaging hall

All of these complicated operations were undertaken within the precincts of a fully operational working brewery with over two hundred client staff and tenants carrying out their normal business around the site. Importantly, the company overcame these obstacles and completed the project successfully without serious incident and remaining in compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations. BSG was delighted to present the Member of the Year: South West to this worthy winner, which was Greendale Construction.

BSG Member of the Year: Midlands Winner - Barrie Beard Ltd

BSG Judges’ Comment The BSG Award for regional Member of the Year in the Midlands was awarded to a company who put the management of Health and Safety at the top of the agenda when planning the installation of a complex, 220 floodlights system at Aston Villa Football Club.

Particular attention was given to mitigating the working at height risks inherent when working on an existing structure through the use of specialist ‘fall prevention systems’ which involved everyone involved including the workforce, managers and company directors as well as our own local BSG Advisor undertaking comprehensive

harness training prior to the project commencing. This enabled the risk of ‘falls from height’ to be controlled and managed safely throughout the project.

The entire system had to be installed, tested and commissioned before the start of the 2015/16 football season, an extremely short time frame of 6 weeks. This was successfully achieved without any compromise to health and safety due to the level of planning undertaken in the pre-construction phase. Congratulations and well done Barrie Beard.
