Meet the Editor – Writing and Reviewing in GeomorphologyExperimental & Numerical Modelling Workshop

This year the Annual Meeting of the British Society for Geomorphology(BSG) will be held in Middleton Hall at the University of Hull from the 4-6September 2017. An outline timetable of conference events is providedbelow. Further details of these events and other aspects of theconference are provided through this circular and are also online.

It is an especially exciting time to come to Hull, as the city celebrates itsyear as the UK's City of Culture (www.hull2017.co.uk). Over the weekendleading up to the conference, the city is also hosting its Freedom Festival, held each year to mark Hull’s contribution to freedom, which began withWilliam Wilberforce campaigning for the end of slavery. The FreedomFestival programme includes the Wilberforce Lecture, given this year byformer UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. There will also be a hugenumber of free shows including theatre, dance, comedy, circus and musicthroughout the city centre across the weekend.

Workshops: Experimental & NumericalModelling

Sunday 3 & Monday 4 September:Learn about Experimental Modelling and Numerical Simulation

Physical and numerical models are exciting tools to gain a betterunderstanding of geomorphological processes across a range of scales –from detailed flow fields around in-stream vegetation to landscapedynamics. These miniature and idealised versions of natural systemsevolve rapidly allowing us to study the evolution of entire landscapes in acouple of hours under controlled conditions to explore controls andscenarios.

As part of the BSG2017 meeting, we are offering a workshop thatcombines physical and numerical modelling approaches. This workshop isa great opportunity to get hands-on experience with modelling. The TotalEnvironment Simulator provides a unique physical modelling facility whilethe state-of-the-art CAESAR-Lisflood will be used to highlight a powerfulcoupling of approaches in tackling geomorphic problems.

We will focus on natural flood management, using physical and virtualcatchment models to explore the effects of changes in rainfall on runoff, flooding and sediment dynamics over longer time periods and how suchrelations can be potentially mitigated by natural flood managementmeasures.

Workshops: Teaching GeomorphologyMonday 4 September, 1030 to 1230:Enhance your REF- and TEF- readiness (Brian Whalley)

With the backdrop of the TEF, Brian will argue that metrics may not be theanswer to improving teaching quality. He will put forward and discuss hisideas of what is important and suggest that we all try to provide astudent-centred education within a suitable framework. Good ‘measures’should follow this implementation.

The session will explore some ways ‘quality’ can be enhanced, whichfollow ‘suggestions’ in the Government’s 2016 White Paper (‘Success as aKnowledge Economy: Teaching Excellence, Social Mobility and StudentChoice’). The session and ideas discussed will help our students byincorporating active learning and skills development as well as (research-led) knowledge. We shall also see if we can reduce marking loads….

Brian will send out some brief notes to registrants before the session by e-mail. If you would like to pose him some teaching-related problems orquestions prior to the session please e-mail.

Workshops: Meet the EditorMonday 4 September, 1300 to 1500:Publishing and reviewing in Geomorphology (Stuart Lane, Editor ESP&L)

ESP&L is the flagship international journal of the BSG, edited by ProfessorStuart Lane (Managing Editor) and seven Associate Editors. The Journalpublishes original full length research papers, shorter articles, commentaries, reviews and discussion papers. Stuart will lead a discussionon what it takes to publish with impact in Geomorphology and will outlinewhat editors are looking for in the way papers are shaped and argued.Stuart will also outline the reviewing process and how we can all helpeditors in their quest to review submissions in a fair and equitable mannerthat ensures that the very best papers published.

Registration & Logistics

Full registration for the meeting, which includes the gala dinner at theDeep Aquarium, icebreaker, morning and afternoon refreshments andlunches, will cost £235 at the early-bird BSG member rates (available until24 July 2017). For postgraduate students the fee is significantly discountedat £125 for the same package.

En-suite bed and breakfast accommodation is available on campus for theSunday, Monday and Tuesday nights at a cost of £65 per night in our newon-campus accommodation centre (The Courtyard).

There are a series of workshops available - as described in previous pages. These are bookable at the time of registration. There will be a smalladditional charge for the pre-conference experimental and numericalmodelling workshop (£20).

All rates quoted above are for BSG members. It is very easy to join theSociety. Conference registration and full details of all pricing options(including registration rates without accommodation) are available via theregistration website.
