SECTION 1: What Are Infectious Diseases?

•There are 5 different agents that

can cause infectious diseases, which

are diseases that are caused by

agents known as pathogens entering

the body

1) Bacteria: tiny, single-celled organism

2) Viruses: tiny disease-causing particle

made up of genetic material and a protein

coat

3) Fungi: Organisms that absorb and use the

nutrients of living or dead organisms

4) Protists: Larger more complex organisms

than bacteria

5) Parasites: Animal parasites are energized

by other living organisms

SECTION 2: PROTECTING

YOURSELF FROM INFECTIOUS

DISEASES

How Your Body Fights Infectious Diseases

-Your body uses your skin, mucous membranes, and chemicals

as physical barriers to protect itself.

-Secondly, your body uses an inflammatory response, when an

injury or infection causing pain, redness, and swelling.

SECTION 3: COMMON INFECTIOUS

DISEASES

Two Communities

helping to prevent the

spread of infectious

diseases in our

community are the

Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention

Institutes of Health.

Diseases are everywhere; there are so many different

pathogens, in so many different places, it’s impossible to

avoid them.

Bacterial Diseases

sensitivity to light, and nausea. Transmitted by contact

with saliva or mucus from an infected person.

2) Salmonellosis: causes headache, cramps, diarrhea,

nausea, and vomiting. Transmitted by eating food from

an infected animal or food contaminated by an infected

person.

Viral Diseases

3) Hepatitis: causes inflammation of the liver, jaundice,

fever, and darkening or the urine. Transmitted by

contact w/ bodily fluids of an infected person and by

ingesting contaminated food/water.
