THIS MONTH IN HISTORY
15 years ago: 23 August 1998
Cape Town’s Peninsula Marathon, which has been held 46 times, has been run in August on only two
occasions. The first time was in 1998, after the race had not been held for four years (1994-97). Boksburg
runner Oelof Vorster, the son of another well-known runner by the same name, achieved a victory margin
of more than 5 minutes when he won in 2:22:39. Farwa Mentoor, not yet the formidable ultra runner she
would become, won the women’s race in 3:01:49. Vorster would later score wins in the Buffs Marathon
and Cango Marathon (twice); in his heyday in the sixties his father had three times won the DAC
Marathon, and was also first in the Border Championships and Savages Marathon.

Dear Sunshine Diary, Hope all is well on your stretch of road. I write in you today to show how very sane I am. You will understand after collating this bit of non-imaginary stuff. Yesterday, Sunday 11th August, 4 years and 4 days after summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, and 1 month and 1 week after my 70th birthday, I ran my 3rd half marathon; for the uninitiated that’s 21,1 km, 21 100 metres, 2 100 000 centimetres, 21 000 000 milimetres. Now I know that a milimetre isn’t long, but anything in the millions is huge. Just imagine 21 000 000 worms lined up end to end. It was really chilly at the start dressed only in my skimpy shorts and vest, but warmed up after a couple of minutes. I did all those millions in under 3 hours, which was my target, so I am happy on that score, especially since there were quite a few hills with which to contend. Today my legs are approaching an approximation of normal. Well, normal for a grandfather with arthritis that is. I slept really well last night, so feel almost ready for another challenge. My daughter, Wendy, ran with me, making the run extra special. Well she didn’t run with me, she ran ahead of me, I think she would have had trouble running at the same pace as me. Few, very few, people can run as slowly as I do, it is quite an art. She finished in 2:11, not too shabby for a veteran hey. Thank you to all the members who helped with the CGA Cross Country event. This made the event so much
better for our children. Apart from all the problems with the CGA and their funny ideas, Boksburg Club did
us proud. Once again thank you.

CGA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS – HOSTED BY BOKSBURG ATHLETIC CLUB - AUGUST 17, 2013
Hi Guys,
Thank you to all that helped at the CGA Cross Country Champs meeting today. It was a long day, and your hard
work was appreciated.
The meeting went off well and would not have been possible without your help.
Cheers
Frank Da Ascencao.
Dear all runners and walkers
Well done to all the finishers of the 2013 Breakthru Midrand 15km and Morningside Rotary 5km.
This year we had a new venue at Waterfall Estate and a new route which resulted in errors being made which
impacted runners and their supporters. I sincerely apologise for these errors that were made.
The errors and problems we had on the day were:
- 15km route was short (12.9km) due to an error being made by the lead bike and the marshalling team;
- The different start and finish venues created logistical problems and these were not well communicated during the
morning;
- There was poor signage to direct runners/walkers and their supporters between the start and the finish;
- The parking was not ideal for all vehicles.
Ultimately we tried to offer you all a safer and prettier run on a cold winter’s morning.
You are welcome to email me on [email protected] to raise your further concerns.
We will continue to strive to improve the event.
Kind regards
Duane Newman
Chairman
