Thank You

Such simple words. Thank you. It'swhat we say when we get a gift. Orwhen someone does something

unexpected that helps us. And some-times, we say this for the simple acknowl-edgement of the other person's actionsand how they touched your life. It's a wayto connect with people. And I have somany "thank yous" to say.

THANK YOU for all the priorleaders of FRCQ that helped make ourcommunity of art quilters so large andvibrant. Starting from a small group in1988 in led by Marilyn Dillard, and fol-lowed by Judith Trager (twice!), Janet JoSmith, Cindy Wildfong, Betsy Cannon,Anne Theobald, Patty Hawkins, Susan Crouse-Kemp, Jo Fitsell, Greg Katz andmost recently, Melody Randol, we are now a group of more than 275 fiber artistsliving in the Front Range (and beyond!). That's amazing … and a tribute to allthese wonderful people who have devoted their time and talents to building sucha strong and creative organization. (Not to mention that this year, we have 6 mem-bers who have been juried into Quilt National 2011!!!) Sigh, I wish I was one.

THANK YOU to all our members. I look around the room every monthand see many familiar faces but the thing I enjoy most is seeing all the new peoplethat somehow find our community and reach out to meet other fiber artists. I'mputting a stake in the ground here – one of my goals as your new President is tomeet at least 5 new people every meeting – but I need your help. Since I'm over60, my brain is not as sharp as it used to be so I would love it if you just came upto me and said "I'm Mary and we don't know each other YET". That way, I don'tintroduce myself to people I've introduced myself to before! 20% of our membersare new every year (that's a lot of faces to remember!) So please, don't be shy andif I introduce myself to you, and we've met before, please pretend we are meetingfor the first time (it will make me feel better!)

THANK YOU to all the people who volunteer their time to make ourorganization such a creative and welcoming place. Our 2011-2012 board volun-teers are: Marjorie Jannotta (Treasurer), Scott Farmer (Membership), RebeccaFellows (Secretary) , Christi Beckmann (Vice President, Programs), and MarthaDyckes & Jean Herman (Workshops).

Kathy Keating (Technology, Website & Institutional Memory), CynthiaEhrnstein (Graphic Artist & Newsletter), Kathleen Gilhooly (Exhibits) and AlainaMarler (New Skills Workshops) aren't on the formal "Board" but each serve ourorganization with essential and talented skills. (To tell the truth, we couldn't sur-vive without them!) And, I’m happy to report that Mary McCauley is taking overrefreshments! Yum!

And finally, THANK YOU for giving me this opportunity to give back toFRCQ – an organization where I have made so many friends and where I havelearned so much about being a fiber artist. I look forward to the next two yearsand hearing ideas from all of you about how we can make this community growand prosper in the future. Please feel free to email me ([email protected]) or callme (303) 388-5215. I’m listening!

Happy Holidays to you all and see you in January 2011.

Patty Hawkins Presents …Collage The Essence

(Haiku) of Landscapes! Shapes & Colors!

Friday & Saturday January 28-29, 2011

Longmont Museum & Cultural Center

Patty Hawkins www.pattyhawkins.comABOUT PATTYPatty is one of the 6 who founded Front RangeContemporary Quilters 20 years ago. Her work has beenjuried into 2 Quilt Visions and 6 Quilt National exhibitsand has also appeared in several invitational exhibitionsincluding Full Deck, Pot Luck, and Oxymoron: AbsurdlyLogical Quilts. She has appeared on HGTV's programSimply Quilts. Her recent honors include: 2009 Lyceumpresenter, Rocky Mountain National Park 2009, SAQA“Art in a Box”, of 12 artists chosen, 2008 Visual Artist, juried for Larimer County, CO, and the 2006 Quilt JapanPrize at Quilt Visions.

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOPYou will express the beauty and depth of YOUR favoritelandscape photo; which captures YOUR attention, creat-ing a fused art quilt composition. We want to focus oncreating individual artwork. A very simple drawing exer-cise gives the way to see the many values, while work-ing with a black and white photocopy. The magic ofmany values and mosaic shapes, in only 2 or 3 colors, willcreate the depth of your landscape. A few “zinger” colorswill accent unique areas, to capture the eye. Writing ashort 3 line haiku, slows you down, and is a fun way to“introduce” YOU to your subject, and learn the reason it“caught your eye”. (This is for your eyes only).

Listening to the Carol Shinn lecture at the NovemberFRCQ meeting brought up some questions in mymind and stimulated interesting conversations. Two

books I have been reading, Point Zero by Michelle Cassouand Trusting the Process by Shaun McNiff, dove-tailed sonicely with Carol’s story.

Carol seems a perfect example of an artist who haseverything lined up. She is connected to her message. Herenergy comes from her own passion and she has an inti-mate relationship with her materials. I wanted to travelback in time and witness the “aha” moment when she dis-covered thread painting and adopted it as her main expres-sive tool. She is either an originator or a forerunner, or partof a sprinkling of soul-sisters who simultaneously decidedto experiment with this rich technique. I noticed she uses itexclusively in her work. To allow oneself to be “caught” bya passion and to use that energy to create from, is part of anatural law, or a “groove”. Peter London, in his bookDrawing from Nature states, “Creation thrives on inspira-tion and affirmation rather than direction.”

I wondered what Carol’s students do. Do they takethis technique off in another direction, or simply retrace herfootsteps? I think the deeper gratification comes fromallowing oneself time free from judgment, experimenting, exploring and developing the techniques which feed ourown personal expression. Then our work will never be a

pale echo of someone else’s.Working from our own intuition rather than an

outside teacher or guru is much riskier, but ultimately pro-duces the kind of work we all want to see. There can be aninternal critical voice that warns against such adventures -voices that stifle our creativity with words like: “You can’tdraw and you have no talent.”

In Shaun McNiff’s book, Trust the Process, hestates: “… a person’s license to create is irrevocable and itopens to every corner of daily life. ... The ways of creationare often paradoxical. When you think there is nothinggoing on, something comes to you, and when you wantsomething desperately, it’s never there.”

When you finally allow yourself time, you are like-ly to be visited by three dragons, according to MicheleCassou, who wrote Point Zero: The Dragon of Productwhich is the judging dragon who is convinced that whatyou need is more instruction, more skill or more talent; theDragon of Control who wants you to organize and controlyour artwork rather than give into spontaneity, and TheDragon of Meaning which thrives on chaining artists totheir thoughts, ignoring intuition.

Carol’s work and process inspires us all to con-tinue on the artistic path. Thanks to the Board for bringingin such an inspiring artist.

In this workshop Ann wants to increase our under-standing of how design works on fabrics we dye. Shewill teach us how Procion MX blacks function using dif-ferent techniques and fabric.
