By the end of Carmon Slater’s presentation, I was slack-jawed. I hadpreviewed his website gleaning a slight glimpse of his work. It didnot prepare me, however, for his absorbing program.

The crowd was typically large, and no one left early. When we didfinally disperse, no one walked away without feeling some connection toCarmon. If you didn’t identify with his politics, social issue perspectives, spirituality, age, or easy-going presence, perhaps his energetic use of color,fun-yet-serious attitude toward work, willingness to try new things, orenviable productivity captured your attention. Talk about a jack-of-alltrades! What an amazing body of work this unpretentious artist sharedwith us.

Faye Anderson invited Carmon to speak, and wrote to thank himfor a wonderful evening. Here is an except from his reply. “I was over-whelmed with the size of the crowd. I thought perhaps 30-50. Don't knowwhat the count was, but was quite impressive. Hard to fathom the incred-ible work being done today (including your own) because of technology, time, techniques, talent. The four t's, I guess. Lots of those were not aroundearlier in my own career … Thanks for the opportunity to reflect and hopepeople did enjoy it.”

Before Carmon spoke, I was talking with Luella Morgenthaler. Iasked if she had picked up a copy of the Longmont Museum catalog withher quilt featured on the cover. She beamed when she told me she had.“I’m so new at this,” she told me, “I still can’t believe they picked my piece.I get excited every time I think about it.”

“It’s always exciting!” I exclaimed. Anytime your work is selectedfor exhibit, featured on a postcard or catalogue, or published in a book, itmakes you smile for a good long time. The thrill remains.

Luella’s work was not only featured on the museum catalog cover,it also made it into 500 Art Quilts, the book recently released by Lark Books.By my count (and please let me know if I’ve omitted anyone), eleven FRCQartists are featured in 500 Art Quilts. As a group, we created 19 of the 500works juried into the publication. Yes indeed, it is exciting.

Lots to note in February. “Connecting Threads” ends its run at theLongmont Museum FEB 7; you’ll regret not seeing it. Mary Louise Learnedis our guest speaker on FEB 15, and her work is innovative and exciting. OnFEB 27, FRCQ will join with SAQA in hosting speaker Susan Else at theCQC meeting in Boulder*.

Mark your calendar, feed your creative spirit, and I’ll see you soon.Melody RandolFRCQ President, [email protected]

2010 - It’s a New Decade!

FRCQ has always been on the progressive edge of thefiber art world. It’s time for FRCQ to further embracethe Internet and technology so that we can ensure ourmembers get the visibility they deserve and so that wecan continue to attract new members.

90% of people in the US have Internet access, and of those, 70% use the Internet for all their research. The Internet is how people are communicating and thisisn’t going to change. Stay tuned for several topics this yearthat deal with embracing technology.

What is Facebook? And Why the Heck Would I Use It?

Facebook (http://www.facebook.com) is a socialutility that connects people with friends and oth-ers who work, study and live around them. A

Facebook Profile is a personal page you can set up whereyou can share your lives and art with other friends. Youselect who yourfriends are, andonly your friendswill see what youpost.

I have 327f r i e n d s o nFacebook. Thesefriends consist ofpeople from highschool, collegeand work as wellfiber artists fromall over the coun-try (and theworld!). I havereceived several lucrative job opportunities from simplepostings I made on Facebook. Also, fiber artists I don’teven know like Pokey Bolton and Robbi Joy Eklow willsee my work (and have commented on it) because weare friends on Facebook.

Statistics show that 80% of the opportunities thatpeople receive (art commissions, job offers, etc) arebecause of our “network” not because of “cold calling”.Another statistic shows that about 1% of network com-munications result in a solid opportunity. Facebook is away to network with a lot of people that might want toknow more about your art. You never know who

knows someone that is looking to invest in art, so com-municating with your network is important.

Most Facebook postings consist of only 1-2 sen-tences so very little time is needed to participate inFacebook. From your Facebook profile, you can create alink to your recent blog entry or a new work posted inyour website’s gallery. A simple link like this could getseveral new people clicking through to your blog orwebsite. Do you see how the Internet is all connected?

Whenever your friends post something, you’llsee it on your Facebook Wall. This is the first area youwill see when you log into your Facebook account. It’scalled your Profile.

To register for a Facebook account, go tohttp://www.facebook.com. Feel free to add me as yourfirst friend after you’ve registered, by going to my pro-file at http://www.facebook.com/kathkeating and clickthe button that says “Add as Friend”. Then you canbrowse through my friends list and add anyone else youknow. Before you know it, you’ll be linked up to sever-al people and your Facebook network will begin.

A Facebook FanPage is a public pro-file that a companycan set up thatenables the compa-ny to share informa-tion about their busi-ness with Facebookusers. FRCQ nowhas a Facebook FanPage. Once you reg-ister to be a fan ofFRCQ, you can postnotices of showsyou’ve been accept-ed to, comment on

the meetings, or, well, share anything you want with theother fans of FRCQ! FRCQ will be posting notices aboutmeetings and other events of interest to our community.Everything posted to the FRCQ fan page will show upon the Walls of all people registered as fans of FRCQ.

To get to the FRCQ Fan Page after you’ve regis-tered for Facebook, simply visit our website,http://www.artquilters.org and look for the blue “F”image in the upper right corner. Click on this image andit will take you directly to the FRCQ Fan Page. Thenclick on the button that says “Become a Fan”.

FRCQ will have a display of art called "Take AnotherLook." It will be at the Boulder Public Library theweekend of March 6-7, 2010. The library is open

between 10 am and 6 pm on Saturday and 12 to 6 onSunday. The display area will be open 1:00 to 5:00 each day.Admission is free. Take Another Look will feature 25works from FRCQ artists that have shown in previouslyjuried FRCQ exhibits in 2008 and 2009. It will also have livedemonstrations by FRCQ artists, showing techniques, spe-cial materials, and other methods of creating our works.

This display is another example of the benefits ofexhibiting your work with FRCQ. Once your art has beenjuried into an FRCQ exhibit, the images are included in ourdigital portfolio for the next 2 years. We select images fromthe portfolio to use in FRCQ promotions, exhibit postcardsand brochures. When we have opportunities, such as the

Boulder Library event and last year's Rocky MountainQuilt Festival booth, which are short term, a few days only,we do not hold a juried exhibit, but rather invite the previ-ously juried works to be displayed to promote FRCQ.

•••••••••••••••••••••

Although we currently have 5 artists scheduled to dodemonstrations at the Boulder Library, we do have roomfor a few more. You do not need to have a work in theportfolio to do this. All FRCQ members are invited toparticipate in the demonstrations. If you would like tohold a demonstration on either or both days, March 6 andor 7, please contact Mary McCauley at [email protected] by phone listed in the FRCQ Member Directory, or atthe February FRCQ meeting.

Last night Garrison Keillor talked about time, abouthow precious it is, and what a sin it is to waste it, andthen, as only he can, he asked poignantly if it wasn't

possible to simply enjoy time for the gift it is, to watch itpass sometimes.

January and February are my favorite months. Theseare my months for making plans, cleaning up old projects, starting over, organizing, resolving. I clean out the freezerand we eat leftovers until the smorgasbord and turkeybounty runs out. There are enough cookies and fruitcakeslices for dieters for at least two months. After the orgy ofChristmas letters, I feel righteously unobliged to write toanybody for awhile. For no honest reason, I feel free! It ismy heart-lightening sigh of the year. Time seems generousnow.

But it doesn't hurt to contemplate the nature of time. Itpasses, as we all know, at various speeds. A half a day withan engrossing novel is shorter than half an hour trying tomake conversation with a difficult old relative. In a certainsense time is the great leveller. It is given, one day at a time,to each of us, yet none of us knows when our personalquota of days will run out. For those who keep in tune withthe unpredictability of it, time is precious. Yet the poorhave as many hours in a day as the rich; the lucky are noluckier with time than the unfortunate. Men and womenreceive equal amounts. Yet some people manage to accom-plish much more in twenty-four hours than others. So weare told. I am suspicious of those time-managers andorganization experts who so cheerfully demonstrate how

inefficient and wasteful we all are of our time. You knowthem: they are the people who insist that it should not takemore than fifteen minutes to clean the bathroom (motelhousekeepers do it that fast). They tell us how to prioritizeour tasks so we won't fritter away time on inessentials. They provide some useful information, but before westumble over our unfinished quilts to reorganize our livesalong their guidelines, we should stand still and rememberthe most significant times of our lives.

I once “wasted” an hour walking to choir practicewhen I could have taken the bus in twenty minutes. But inthat cold snowy night, on that long walk, I received someinsights and made some resolutions that changed my life.Whenever we return from a long trip, I have learned that Iwill putter away a day doing laundry, reading the mail, putting away clothes, looking at the garden, petting thedog, calling friends, napping and day dreaming. I could doall the necessary things in a couple of concentrated hours, but I would not be truly “home”, and I have to be “home”in order to work. Once in awhile I have to shop without alist. It's the only way I really see what's out there.Occasionally I take the long way home, just to see what isbeing built on the hill west of us, or just to look at thefoothills from east of town. These are not efficient uses oftime. Neither are they “time fillers”. Instead, they maketime full. There are some ways of spending time that enrichthe moments and days that follow. I need to be remindedof that. I'll bet you do, too.
