Bits & Pieces PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Jean Sherwin
Welcome back to our existing members and welcome to our new
members and guests. I hope everyone had a great summer. I would like to thank Carol
Darou for taking the June meeting for me so I could vacation in Newfoundland. I know
that she did a great job again.
I am looking forward to an exciting 2013-2014 year for our Guild. There are new books in the library, great workshops planned, our October and April retreats are in the works,
exciting trunk shows each month with great guest speakers, and our December QT that
was such a big hit last year and will be again this year.
We are looking to fill some spaces in our management team and we would like you to
consider being a part of the team. It is your Guild and taking part in the management
team is a great way to really enjoy it.
Jean
Quilts on the Tay 2013
The attendance at our show was 1193 for the three days.
Thank you to Mary Young for the use of her car to
showcase our Car Quilt.
Thank you to the set up committee of men: Colin Sangster,
Gord Buchan, Gerry Butler, Jim Cooke, Doug Gutierrez, Ed Klymko, Terry Oblinski, Ed Sherwin, Ross Hollingsworth, John Kryvenchuk, Randy Weber, Joel Jossinet, Joerg Linse, Eric Halpin, Malcolm Clark, John Wilson, and David
Zimmerly.
Special thanks to Helga Zimmerly who showed up with her
broken arm to add her expertise to the show.
Thank you to Marilyn Crawford, Yvonne Stirling, Cathy
Price, Colleen Richardson, Mary Young and Josée Aghajanian for the wonderful demos.
Thanks to the Perth and Lanark Civitan Clubs who did the
Tea Room for us.
Thank you to the 3 R’s rug hooking group who had a
marvelous display of hooked items.
Thanks to all the vendors who came to our show to sell and
display their quilting goods.
And last but not least a great big thank you to all the
volunteers who helped by working at the show, setting up and taking down the show, organizing the show, and all those who entered their beautiful quilted works of art to make our show the best show around.
Congratulations
Ruth Rodford's quilt "Love Celtic Knots" won the Viewer's Choice Award at Quilts on the Tay in August. Ruth took a workshop, fell in love with this design and knew she would one day make a quilt. It is hand appliquéd and she hand quilted it sitting with her husband who was recuperating from an illness. ~ Nancy Jossinet ~
Note: The rosette is provided by the
Canadian Quilter’s Association.
A number of people asked for Anna Cornel’s recipe for Lemon Snow at the June pot luck, so here it is:
LEMON SNOW
Juice of 3 lemons White of 4 eggs 1 Packet of gelatine (About 1 Tablespoon)
1 cup of sugar
In a small saucepan soak gelatine in 1/4 cup water for a few minutes. Heat on low, stirring until gelatine dissolves but do not let it boil (or gelatine will not set). Add lemon juice and 1/2 cup sugar. Again warm slowly until sugar is dissolved. Take off heat, set aside until cool then place in fridge until mixture begins to set. This happens quite quickly so check frequently. Beat eggs whites until stiff, then gradually add remaining half cup sugar. Continue to beat and slow-ly add lemon mixture. The snow should be white and look almost glossy. Pour into suitable container and place in fridge until ready to serve. I usually grate a little lemon peel over the surface. ENJOY! ~ Anna ~

Executive Meeting Report — September
The meeting was hosted by Jean Sherwin and was followed by a pot luck lunch. President (Jean Sherwin) - advised the storage unit move worked really well; everything needs to be stacked upright. The website committee meeting scheduled for September 16 may need to be changed. Vice President (Carol Darou) - advised she needed hosts for the November and April Executive meetings. Past President (Carole Armstrong) - would like to fill the Vice President position by the end of October this year. Treasurer (Janice Spitz) - provided the budget. Block of the Month (Cathy Price) - showed her sample of all this year’s blocks made into a quilt. Membership (Muriel Hopper) - advised that she has received 83 registrations to date. She has found a local business that can provide the best price for our name tags with only a 4-day turnaround and no minimum order required. Pins or magnetic fasteners can be provided for the same price. Newsletter (Lynne Green) - provided samples of a slightly different newsletter format she was proposing.
Outreach (Anna Cornel) - showed the fabrics she has chosen for the Perth Settlement 200th Anniversary quilt. There should be 30 quilts for donating to Quilts of Valour. Program (Ruth Oblinski) - advised what guest speakers and workshops are planned for the first couple of months of this coming year.
Publicity (Colleen Richardson) - showed the poster she was distributing advertising the September meeting.
June Meeting Review
There were 82 members and 4 guests in attendance at the June meeting and pot luck. As usual, the food was wonderful. Door prizes were donated by Edith Seward and Sharon Kryvenchuk. Winners were Mary Young, Wilhelmine Hill, Lois Carson, and Tricia Klymko. The raffle basket winner was Bridget O’Flaherty. The winner of the $68 collected for the PIGs contest was Dawn Field who also received a Lesley Penn pattern, and fabric. Some awesome projects that members have worked on were displayed in Show and Tell; and several members who participated in the Challenge in May held up their work and explained how their projects evolved. Carol Darou read out a letter from Susan Purney Mark, as well as a thank you from Dignity House for the Guild’s donation to them. She presented thank you gift cards to Ross Hollingsworth for setting up the meeting space each month, and to Margaret Parkinson for providing the microphone. Gold pins were presented to the following people for 10 years continuous membership: Dee O’Connor, Mary Forde, Lorna Leaver-Kerr, Olive Loney, Sharon Kryvenchuk, and Janice Spitz. Corsages were presented to the following people who were leaving their positions: Louise Clark (Program Committee), Dawn Field (Program Committee), Josée Aghajanian (Archives), Barbara Halpin (Raffle Basket), and Mary Forde (Membership). Mary thanked Wilhelmine Hill, Ruth Rodford, Eleanor Kaarsberg, Sharon Kryvenchuk, and Tricia Klymko for manning the phone tree for people who do not have computers.. Ruth Oblinski drew members’ attention to the special insert in the newsletter outlining the 2013-2014 Guild Challenge and announced that for next year only, Challenge Night will be held at the April 2014 meeting.
Helga Zimmerly advised that 1336 quilts have been displayed since 2000 at Quilts on the Tay; so far there are 67 entries this year. Janice Spitz reviewed the budget as posted, and Eleanor Kaarsberg and Louise Clark volunteered to carry out the financial audit.
Executive Positions
A new Vice President will be required for
September 2014. However, we would like the
position filled by the end of October 2013, so that
the person can be involved in organizing the Christmas Sale for 2014.
The Vice President shall:
1. in the absence or disability of the President
perform the duties and exercise the powers of the
President;
2. be a signing officer on behalf of the Guild; 3. perform such other duties as shall from time to
time be requested by the Executive, such as, but
not limited to, scheduling Executive meetings, Guild
QTs, and chairing the fundraising sale.
Please speak to me if you are interested in
this position. ~ Carole Armstrong ~

Outreach
We are working on two projects:
Quilts of Valour
I am really pleased at the number of mem-
bers working on quilts and remind you that the guild is supplying batting. Please contact me if
you need some. I have a large roll. Colleen
Richardson has printed the (special) labels and
you can get them from Babs Grose at the Sep-
tember meeting, or me later (I am away from
Perth until September 29th). I have one top that needs quilting. Let me know if you would like
to quilt it.
The area branch of Quilts of Valour is
holding a Working Bee on Saturday November 9
in Ottawa. I am planning to attend and would like as many members as possible who have
made quilts to join me. If you plan to attend
please do not totally finish binding your quilt so
that you will have something to do at the Bee
before we present the quilts. I anticipate that
we will make up carpool(s). I do not have any more information on this yet, but expect to hear
details before our October meeting.
Outreach Charity quilt
Babs Grose has the new blocks to show at
the meeting and I will have sign up sheets and
kits next month. This quilt, which will be quilted by Carol Darou, will be donated to the
committee organizing the 200th anniversary of
establishment of the Perth Settlement.
The quilt donated to Community Living
raised close to $3,000 (and made the front page
of the September 12 Perth Courier!). ~ Anna ~
Library
Modern Quilting Designs by Bethany Pease, owner of a thriving longarm business, contains over ninety free motion designs for borders, blocks and fillers, to add texture and style to your next quilt. Many of the designs are continuous-line.
Album Quilts of Ohio’s Miami Valley by Sue Cummings, quilt historian, lecturer and quilt collector, presents over two dozen never-before-published colour photographs of folk art album quilts. This book will appeal to quilters interested in his-tory of appliqued quilts and genealogy. (Remember to sew a label on your quilt and document it well. Knowing the prove-nance of your quilt adds to its value).
Quilts of the Ohio Western Reserve by Ricky Clark, one of America’s foremost quilt historians, describes historic quilts that commemorate community history, from town fund-raisers
of the 1890s, military and presidential quilts, to recent quilt patterns painted on barns. (This book may inspire you for this year’s guild challenge).
Primitive Quilts and Projects, Fall 2013, published by Judith L. Williamson, contains patterns for fifteen autumn projects including quilts, hooked rugs and fall table toppers, just in time for Thanksgiving. Thanks to Marilyn Robinson for donating this issue of a publication for which you might like to have your own subscription.
Christmas Delights, Quilts that Celebrate the Season by Jaynette Huff contains patterns for sixteen original paper-pieced quilt blocks. Thanks to Joan Kelly for donating this book.
One hundred and ten books that were signed out in June are due to be returned. When you show a quilt at the guild meet-ings please mention if you found the pattern in one of the LCQG library books.
~ Marie ~
Block of the Month
WELCOME EVERYONE for a new year of
Block of the Month. You had a glimpse of the quilt in June and I again have it here, so that
you can have a closer look and sign up for the
patterns each month. Your first pattern is a
French Braid. I chose this because it is the
biggest and will use the largest amount of fab-ric. It will make it easier for you to
gauge how much fabric you are using.
For fabric requirements, I started
with 15 fat quarters and 4 metres of
background. I, obviously, did not use
that much, but I wanted the variety. I will also bring in all my left over fabric
so you can judge how much fabric you
will need. Now let’s get started...

The Stash
Membership
Name tags can now be provided with either a pin or magnetic fastener for the same price of $10.00. If any existing Guild member would prefer a name tag with a magnetic fastener, please give your name and money to me and I will order it for you. Please note that anyone who has a pacemaker should not wear a magnetic name tag; also they should not be placed near your credit and debit cards.
~ Muriel ~
Social Thank you to all of our Executive Members for providing tonight’s treats. ~ Bev ~
