SummaryThe ideation workshop is planned to help teams and companies prepare for the big app challenge. We had a great turnout (94 pax) that’s beyond our target of 70. The attendees were very interactive. Presenters from Tentspark, IBM and Teradata. Venue was conducive and the only major drawback on the internet bandwidth.

The ideation workshops objectives :1) Provide basic knowledge on Big Data Analytics and the platforms that teams can develop on2) Provide a forum for discussion and sharing of ideas3) Foster a community of like minded people

Ideation Workshop (2)

Venue : Exabytes

Date : 18-19th Oct

Attendance : 64 pax (96 registration)

Page 6: Big App Challenge 2014 Post Mortem Report

Good Learnings1. Weekend workshop had good turnout

2. 2 days workshop is optimal

3. Having speakers from partners gave more variety

4. A lot of people are interested in Big Data and the challenge

5. Venues were good. TM had a LRT station nearby and parking rates at Exabytes were reasonable.

Future Improvement1. Have more time for brainstorming ideas. Could invite some experts to lead the session.

2. 33%+ drop out rate of registrant. May consider charging a small fee

3. Need a minimum of 100Mb dedicated bandwidth to run hands-on lab or we need to build VMs

• As a software company, as well as a local startup, it gives us a chance to understand the importance of big data analytics, the technology available and how we play our role in this area.

• Knowledge gained

• I admire the trainers are very knowledgeable and very helpful through out the training. They gave their best for us and ensure us left no questions behind when we step out the door. Thing that really needs to be improve are: 1. There are no power plugs at the middle room. 2. And, The most important, the WIFI connections are very very very limited. We wasted a lot of time on it to get what we want. Anyway, I am glad to attend this event.

• live demo

• FREE FOODDDDD

• TeraData guy presentation. and VM

• Appreciate Patrick for his patience and also passion to share his experience and knowledge. Not to mention Exabytes for the splendid venue and food preparation. Thanks again. ^^

• the event successfully to deliver the big data idea to me, and with the presentation of vendor giving, let know more what the industry is happening.

• Learn new knowledge

• technical sharing session about Hadoop, R and few other tools in Big Data

What did you like about the event?

Second Runner Up – Peta Insights

PetaInsights takes on the challenge to discover cosmical hidden patterns and knowledge from human traveling profile. By constantly taking in latest human location information, PetaInsights is continuously improving and evolving itself in order to sketch the most accurate human mobility profile under diverse future environmental conditions on the map for visualization. With such insights before one’s eyes, it allows everyone to better prepare themselves for the upcoming situation. This will bring tremendous benefits like time saving, maximizing profits and reducing the inconvenience to the daily life of the society. Besides that, PetaInsights is also equipped with an incident simulator, which was built using the past historical human mobility pattern during the period of natural disaster.

First Runner Up – Asia Pacific University

Water is the source of life, yet having it in both extremes will result in disaster and death.

As Malaysia is located on the equator, it is blessed with a tropical climate and an average rainfall of 2000mm - 4000mm annually. However, with great water comes great responsibly, and water management to maintain it at an optimum level is a challenge.

Therefore, an analysis was done in order to produce reports of rainfall amount from weather stations, water levels in dams, relationships between the rainfall and water levels in the dams were generated, and the amounts needed by as well as given to the population supported by each dam.

Champion – MMU Teradata

The team developed two application, one a web based application (WAMP, BootStrap and JQuery) which featured statistical description of the dengue outbreak, a Twitter panel, and retrieval of the Dengue Index , an index showing the likelihood of a Dengue Outbreak in a given area.

A decision tree is also available to help decision-makers decide on the likelihood of an outbreak given certain parameters. A second application was developed using C#. This desktop application features dynamic geo-locations of dengues cases, and provided the likelihood of a Dengue outbreak in a certain locale using a Bayesian Network engine. The Bayesian Network model is able to predict up to 85% accuracy of the likelihood of a Dengue Outbreak up to a month of the last available data. The result of the model was validated using the latest published data on Dengue cases and it showed high correlation. The team consisted of researchers and students from MMU, data scientists from Teradata, and a medical doctor from Ministry of Health Malaysia.
