It is Saturday, 2/22/14 and I hope everyone who reads my message participated in the precinct meetings today. I, along with many other volunteers helped throughout the day with registering delegates to the upcoming March 29th Clark County Convention. This year the convention will be held at Chapparel High School. It will be an important convention in order to elect the 14 trustees for the CCRP board. Convention delegates are automatic members of the CCRP central committee and their participation is very important for keeping our board solid and the fundraising ability strong. So please plan to attend, stay for all the voting and make a difference! Our speakers at the Thursday meeting were fabulous. Thank you Diane for a wonderfully planned program! The first Speaker introduced by Judge Michael Villani was Ryan Wolfington, Founder of VegasTennis.com and co-founder of the Marty Hennessey Junior Tennis Foundation. His organization offers tutoring and mentoring to all kids through a philisophy of hard work, discipline and personal achievements. Over the years, the foundation has helped 40 students be awarded college scholarships in tennis and academics. One of his graduates, Frideric Prandecki spoke of his experience going through the program and is a proud graduate of North Carolina State University. Chief Justice Kris Pickering presented a very informative power point on why Nevada needs a Nevada State Court of Appeals ---ballot question #1 this November. She presented the formidable reasons for establishing the Appellate Court with the following main points: Initially, 3 judges would be appointed by the current Governor if the ballot passes. These judges would have to run for their offices after the first term so the positions do not remain appointed. The cost of the judges salaries along with staff would run approximately $1.4 million each year. However, the legislature allocates funds fo the state Supreme Court to operate their caseload and every year returns to the general fund nearly $1 million. This past year the Supreme Court returned over $1.2 million so the case can be made for the Appellate Court as it is already being paid for through these returning funds. Last but not least, the Appellate Court would use the current courthouse facility at the Regional Justice Court building in Las Vegas where the NV Supreme Court hears cases a few days out of each month. Every Nevada citizen deserves the right to have their appeal heard in a timely manner. The time has come to support this Nevada State Court of Appeals--ballot question #1 on November 4th. Tell all your friends, family and co-workers to vote YES for Question 1!

ARW JUDICIAL CANDIDATE FORUM

Please join us to meet our judicial candidates! Most voters know little or nothing about their choices for

judge. Don’t be an uninformed voter. At the Judicial Candidate Forum, each candidate will address the group

and pass out their campaign information. Even better, the candidates will be available to mix and mingle with

us and answer any questions. During dinner you will have at least two judicial candidates seated at your table,

so you will have a chance to really get to know them and learn more about the important job they do for us here

in Clark County.

The office of judge is non-partisan, and only two candidates for each judicial department will advance after the

primaries, regardless of party affiliation.

Only ARW offers you the opportunity to meet all of these candidates at once prior to casting your vote. So

spread the word and RSVP early – This event is sure to fill up!

(*Please note that due to seating constraints, those arriving without an RSVP may not be admitted depending on available seat-ing. Don’t be left out – be sure to submit your RSVP now.)

Mix and Mingle at 5:30pm; Meeting starts PROMPTLY at 6:00pm

Please RSVP by Sunday March 16th to Cherie Wood, [email protected], 702-480-7151 or

Communications...Jennifer Barrier

James Garfield was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio in 1831, the last of the “log cabin” Presidents. As a youth he drove canal boat mule teams, and eventually earned enough money to attend Williams College in Massachusetts, graduating in 1856. Later, as a classics professor at Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later Hiram Coll...ege) in Ohio, then its president, Garfield was elected to the Ohio Senate as a Republican in 1859 during the height of the secession crisis. In 1862, when Union victories during the Civil War were few, Garfield proved himself worthy as a Union officer after successfully leading his brigade against a Confederate assault at the Battle of Middle Creek in Kentucky. He was later awarded a battlefield commission as a major general two years later. Meanwhile, in 1862, Ohio voters elected Garfield to Congress. President Lincoln persuaded him to resign his army commission and take his congressional seat, citing it was easier to find major generals than it was to find effective and stalwart Republicans for Congress. He continually won re-election for the next 18 years, and became the leading Republican in the House. Garfield won the Presidential election of 1880 against Democratic former Civil War general Winfield Scott Hancock. As President, Garfield strengthened federal authority over the New York Customs House, then under the sway of New York Senator Roscoe Conkling, a powerful Republican and purveyor of political favor and patronage. After this and other political wrangling with the power-wielding Conklin over political appointments, Garfield emerged as the assertive President who would not yield to the control of local factions and interests. In foreign affairs, Garfield invited the heads of all American republics and protectorates to a conference in Washington in 1882. The watershed meeting never took place. On July 2, 1881, at a Washington train station, Garfield was shot by a disgruntled attorney won had sought a coveted consular appointment. Garfield lay mortally wounded in the White House for weeks. On September 6, Garfield was taken to the New Jersey seaside after showing promising signs of a full recovery. However, on September 19, not even halfway into his term as President, he died from an infection and internal hemorrhaging

Commentary by Bob Lonsberry, Rochester NY radio personality on WHAM 1180 AM, Two Americas The Democrats are right, there are two Americas. The America that works, and the America that doesn’t. The America that contributes, and the America that doesn’t. It’s not the haves and the have nots, it’s the dos and the don’ts. Some people do their duty as Americans, obey the law, support themselves, contribute to society, and others don’t. That’s the divide in America. It’s not about income inequality, it’s about civic irresponsibility. It’s about a political party that preaches hatred, greed and victimization in order to win elective office. It’s about a political party that loves power more than it loves its country. That’s not invective, that’s truth, and it’s about time someone said it. The politics of envy was on proud display a couple weeks ago when President Obama pledged the rest of his term to fighting “income inequality.” He noted that some people make more than other people, that some people have higher incomes than others, and he says that’s not just. That is the rationale of thievery. The other guy has it, you want it, Obama will take it for you. Vote Democrat. That is the philosophy that produced Detroit. It is the electoral philosophy that is destroying America. It conceals a fundamental deviation from American values and common sense because it ends up not benefiting the people who support it, but a betrayal. These Democrats have not empowered their followers, they have enslaved them in a culture of dependence and entitlement, of victim-hood and anger instead of ability and hope. The president’s premise – that you reduce income inequality by debasing the successful – seeks to deny the successful the consequences of their choices and spare the unsuccessful the consequences of their choices. Because, by and large, income variation in society is a result of different choices leading to different consequences. Those who choose wisely and responsibility have a far greater likelihood of success, while those who choose foolishly and irresponsibly have a far greater likelihood of failure. Success and failure usually manifest themselves in personal and family income. You choose to drop out of high school or to skip college - and you are apt to have a different outcome than someone who gets a diploma and pushes on with purposeful education. You have your children out of wedlock and life is apt to take one course; you have them within a marriage and life is apt to take another course. Most often in life our destination is determined by the course we take.

My doctor, for example, makes far more than I do. There is

significant income inequality between us. Our lives have had an inequality of outcome, but, our lives also have had an in equality of effort. While my doctor went to college and then devoted his entire young adulthood to medical school and residency, I got a job in a restaurant. He made a choice, I made a choice, and our choices led us to different outcomes. His outcome pays a lot better than mine.

Does that mean he cheated and Barack Obama needs to take away his wealth? No, it means we are both free men in a free society where free choices lead to different outcomes. It is not inequality Barack Obama intends to take away, it is freedom. The freedom to succeed, and the freedom to fail. There is no true option for success if there is no true option for failure. The pursuit of happiness means a whole lot less when you face the punitive hand of government if your pursuit brings you more happiness than the other guy. Even if the other guy sat on his arse and did nothing. Even if the other guy made a lifetime’s worth of asinine and shortsighted decisions. Barack Obama and the Democrats preach equality of outcome as a right, while completely ignoring inequality of effort. The simple Law of the Harvest – as ye sow, so shall ye reap – is sometimes applied as, “The harder you work, the more you get." Obama would turn that upside down. Those who achieve are to be punished as enemies of society and those who fail are to be rewarded as wards of society. Entitlement will replace effort as the key to upward mobility in American society if Barack Obama gets his way. He seeks a lowest common denominator society in which the government besieges the successful and productive to foster equality through mediocrity. He and his party speak of two Americas, and their grip on power is based on using the votes of one to sap the productivity of the other. America is not divided by the differences in our outcomes, it is divided by the differences in our efforts. It is a false philosophy to say one man’s success comes about unavoidably as the result of another man’s victimization. What Obama offered was not a solution, but a separatism. He fomented division and strife, pitted one set of Americans against another for his own political benefit. That’s what socialists offer. Marxist class warfare wrapped up with a bow.

I am a Republican because…

I believe the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s

dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.

I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of

race, creed, sex, age or disability

I believe free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this na-

tion opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.

I believe government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to

keep more of the money they earn.

I believe the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those criti-

cal functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and

that the best government is that which governs least.

I believe the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government

closest to the people.

I believe Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while de-

veloping new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.

I believe Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride

while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

Finally, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ide-

als into positive and successful principles of government.
