For those of you who could not attend Active Republican Women’s second pre-primary Candidate Fair Fundraiser at the Italian American Club Thursday, May 17th, you missed a fun night, and perhaps one of the largest “Meet & Greets” of the year! Thank you to all of the 90+ members and fellow Republicans who came to support our many candidates and club.

The success of this year’s candidate fair correlates directly to the 45 candidates who participated. Thank you to all! ARW recognizes the life of a candidate is not easy. Juggling campaigns, families and jobs requires masterful planning and often picking and choosing among competing events. That so many candidates believed it important to share their time with our club that evening is a testimony to the perceived value in ARW’s event. Thank you candidates!

Net proceeds from the Candidate Fair will go toward the $1500 the ARW Board budgeted for 2012 post-primary campaign donations. Legislative Chair, Melody Howard, has convened a committee to meet and make recommendations to the board as to how the money should be distributed and to whom.

At the NvFRW Spring Board Meeting in April, Club Presidents were apprised of revisions to the Nevada Campaign Contribution Statutes requiring the formation of a PAC. ARW will either participate in one of the two proposed NvFRW PACs, one for the north and one for the south, or ARW will form it’s own PAC. Once the structure and rules are in place, the ARW Board will be able to make a decision on which way is best for our club. Although the new laws make it more difficult to donate money, we will not be deterred! We will certainly do our share to “Make Nevada RED!”

Stay tuned for more information about the campaign donations ARW will make sometime after the primary!

See you next month!

The Literacy Committee Update By Molly Governs, ARW Literacy Chair Every two years the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) publishes a list of recommended books for the national membership to read, discuss or donate selected books to community organizations.

The list is called the Mamie Eisenhower Library Program 2012-13. This year ARW will be donating two children's books from the MELP list to C.P. Squires Elementary School Library. However, the list of books is not just for children but encompasses books for all ages and interests in current political thinking. There is something for everyone in the MELP list. LAS VEGAS-CLARK COUNTY LIBRARY DISTRICT SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2012

During the hot days ahead reading gives children a chance to take a quiet break from otheractivities and keep their reading skills up to par until school begins again. The local Library District provides an excellent opportunity for children to read and be rewarded in many ways for their reading efforts.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Summer Reading Program begins on Friday, June 1, and continues through Tuesday, July 31. The Program is designed to offer children and their families a chance to share reading, attend special programs, and keep track of their reading successes and progress.

Children from birth to age 5 can join the Rubber Ducky Reading Club. Early literacy skills activities include a rubber ducky board book to take home plus an entry into a drawing for a chance to win a gift of books.

Kindergarten through grade 5 kids can join Dream Big, READ! This will give kids a chance to earn a Book Buck to redeem in any of the Library District Foundation's used bookstores, a gold medal and an entry into a prize drawing for a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card.

For teens grades six and up the reading program is called Own the Night. Reading teens earn a book Buck, a magnetic bookmark and an entry into a drawing for a Sony WiFi eReader.

For any of the above programs simply stop by a Library District branch on or after June 1 to pick up a reading log or go online at http://lvccldnews.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/srp2012/

Caring for the American SoldierBy Diane Welch, Chair of ARW Caring for the American Soldier

The generosity of our club continued with the many donations for Showers of Appreciation. On May 12 at the Cannery Hotel & Casino, the donations from our members were combined with the generosity of others to provide baby gift baskets, cribs, car seats, and other big items for pregnant moms who were either active duty or married to an active duty member E-5 or below. In addition to numerous volunteers who worked to wrap gifts and help at the baby shower, ARW donated the following:

- $250 cash- 1820 baby wipes- 812 diapers- 48 baby outfits- A beautiful hand-crocheted baby

blanket- Receiving blankets, toys, socks and

numerous other items

On behalf of all the new military moms, thank you ARW!

Our next campaign will be to support the new USO lounge at McCarran Airport. You can participate by placing your donations in the patriotic buckets located on each table during our next meeting.

Finally, we are joining the Nevada Federation in their project to gather information for the World War II veteran’s registry. Watch for posters at the check in table and if you have a friend or relative who is a World War II vet, please fill in their information. For more information on any of our Caring for American Soldiers outreach, please contact Diane Welch at [email protected] or 373.6522.

LAST OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE !!FIND THE HIDDEN WORD CONTEST

What’s the Word? …And What’s the Prize?

You have heard about the spoken word, but have you heard about the hidden word? We are running a contest for ARW members only, with some terrific prizes. Since 2012 is such a very important election year to be well informed, and since your Board set priorities this year to increase membership participation, and most especially since our ARW Battle Born Bulletin is award-winning caliber, first prize each month will be a FREE DINNER at Spanish Trails Country Club at our ARW monthly membership meeting (a $30 cash value!) The contest is so easy. All we ask is to read Battle Born and submit your word entry. (Hint: the word will have a patriotic or political meaning.) The word contest comes right from the belly of our newsletter! Here are the details:

1. Read newsletter and make your guess on the word. The Hidden word is a single word (not an expression) and will appear at least five times or more anywhere in the newsletter.

2. One hidden word entry per member per month. The Hidden word must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Subject: ARW Hidden Word Contest.

3. Hidden word entry must be received via email between the 1st and 15th of the month for that month’s meeting. The timestamp of the email will be used to determine if deadline was met.

4. If several people submit correct answer, a winner’s name will be drawn at the ARW meeting of that same month. Winner must be present to win, or another name will be drawn. If no winner is present after five drawings, then we skip the award for one month.

5. Both Full and Associate Members are eligible. ARW Board members are not eligible. But only one free dinner per winner per year.

6. The prize is a free dinner at the next ARW Monthly Meeting of the next consecutive month. You must RSVP and we cannot postpone the award. Other prizes may also be awarded.

CONGRATULATIONS Diane Dennison FOR WINNING THE HIDDEN WORD CONTEST IN MAY. ENJOY YOUR FREE DINNER AT THE JUNE 21ST MEMBERSHIP MEETING !

!! ANNOUNCING A NEW CONTEST STARTING WITH THE AUGUST NEWSLETTER !!

Send your own article, message or a picture from your vacation to [email protected]

The best one will be published in our August Newsletter and the winner will win a complementary dinner at the August meeting.

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S. T. R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKESometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking four simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE. For example, say “Chicken Soup” - if not coherent, then it could be stroke

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS

S *Stick out your tongue. If the tongue is crooked, i.e. it goes to one side or the other, That is also an indication of a stroke

HEARD ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL......

"If Mitt wins the nomination, as seems very likely, I will enthusiastically support his candidacy.

For my friends who have hesitation on that score, I'd just ask you to keep four things in mind:

Justice Scalia just turned 78, Justice Kennedy will turn 78 later this year, Justice Breyer will be 76 in August, and Justice Ginsburg turned 81 about a week ago.

We wish them all well, of course, but the brute fact is that whoever we elect as president in

November is almost certainly going to choose at least one and maybe more new members of the Supreme Court -- in addition to hundreds of other life-tenured federal judges, all of whom will be making momentous decisions about our lives for decades to come.

If you don't think it matters whether the guy making those calls is Mitt Romney or Barack Obama, I think you're smokin' something dangerous." --columnist
