President’s Message… Maureen M Karas
With March comes candidate filing for public office in the state of Nevada. We should know who Republican candidates are for federal, state, county and city offices when we open our Saturday, March 17th newspaper. Please know that from now until the June 12th Primary, ARW general membership meeting programs will be dedicated to introducing the candidates to you so that you may make an informed decision at the polls. See programs in this newsletter for more details.
Also this month, we have the Clark County Republican Party’s (CCRP) Convention at The Orleans Casino on Tropicana. Those of you stepping up to be delegates to the convention, I would like to say thank you. And those of you who have volunteered to register the delegates, some 3500 of them, I applaud you for your willingness to give of your time and energy. Successful elections require a synergistic process – all hands working together for a common goal. And that goal is making Nevada RED in 2012! By the way, if you have not purchased your RED pin yet, you may do so at the convention. Margaret Helsper will be manning a table for that purpose. Can’t help but plug our 2012 ARW Fundraiser!!!
Last, you will want to mark your calendars for the Nevada Federation of Republican Women’s Spring Board Meeting to be held at The Gold Coast Casino on Flamingo Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st. This year our two-day agenda will be a little different. Because of the Caucus and Convention, NvFRW Regents were unable to schedule the annual Leadership Training in the first quarter. Instead, this valuable seminar will be held starting at 1:00 PM Friday, April 20th. Those of you who are new to ARW and those of you wanting to step up in new areas of the club will want to attend this valuable, educational event.
Following Leadership will be the special and newly formatted Regents event featuring the Chief Operations Officer for National Securities Technologies, LLC, Mike Butchko. NST is a government contractor responsible for the operations at the Nevada National Security Site. Hear about how Nevada played an integral role in assisting the Japanese with the failure of their nuclear reactor post-tsunami. More information on this may be seen in the NvFRW Newsletter due to come to your email sometime in March. Proceeds from your membership in Regents go to events such as these and leadership training for our members.

President’s Message.... continuedAnd something new will be added to our 2-day event this year - a Friday evening social complete with cash bar, refreshments and Bunco. Get to meet ladies from some of the other clubs here in Las Vegas, the Rurals and Northern Nevada. This is a great way for all of us to network and learn from each other.

If you are a full ARW member we’d appreciate your submitting volunteer hours. Right now we are collecting hours for June-December 2011.
What qualifies: Activity A: Campaign, GOP precinct, registering voters, RNC convention. Activity B: All other, such as: travel to/from Board Meeting, Leadership Meeting, attendance or prep activities for NFRW, NvFRW, ARW conventions, serve on ARW committees or gather contributions for committee requests, prep time for ARW committees, listed on page 7 under ARW Leadership Team
How to qualify: Put your hours in an email to Alice Shillock-Clark, [email protected] Provide a monthly total by key activitiy (A &B). You may also go to our website to download the form and send by email or “snail mail” to Alice. Click here for details.
The Literacy Committee has three needs and requests:
1. Please consider using one small period of time to read to a class in any school or preschool. Contact Molly Governs by emailing [email protected] for some tips and short instructions. It has been brought to my attention that some companies will make small donations to the schools on behalf of employees who volunteer their time reading to our children in schools. Ask your employer if they do this.
2. Donations of new or gently used books for elementary aged school children are needed as gifts to children in elementary schools to start their own home libraries.
3. The ARW has published Literacy Cards (pictured below) with tips to parents and caregivers of young children on enhancing the joys of reading. Teachers, please feel free to ask for these cards also. Once again, contact Molly Governs via email ([email protected]) for large or small quantities of these cards to distribute throughout our Las Vegas community.

Caring for the American SoldierOur first effort this year, as in years past, is to donate Girl Scout cookies to troops at home and away. ARW will be sending cookie boxes to deployed soldiers and also distributing some closer to home. If you know of a deployed military member or unit that could use a touch of home, please email Diane Welch the information at [email protected] or call her at (702) 373-6522. Likewise, if you know of a struggling military member, family, or unit who may have recently returned from deployment, let Diane know.

FIND THE HIDDEN WORD CONTESTWhat’s the Word? …And What’s the Prize?
You have heard about the spoken word, but have you heard about the hidden word? We are running a contest for ARW members only, with some terrific prizes. Since 2012 is such a very important election year to be well informed, and since your Board set priorities this year to increase membership participation, and most especially since our ARW Battle Born Bulletin is award-winning caliber, first prize each month will be a FREE DINNER at Spanish Trails Country Club at our ARW monthly membership meeting (a $30 cash value!) The contest is so easy. All we ask is to read Battle Born and submit your word entry. (Hint: the word will have a patriotic or political meaning.) The word contest comes right from the belly of our newsletter! Here are the details:
1. Read newsletter and make your guess on the word. The Hidden word is a single word (not an expression) and will appear at least five times or more anywhere in the newsletter.
2. One hidden word entry per member per month. The Hidden word must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Subject: ARW Hidden Word Contest.
3. Hidden word entry must be received via email between the 1st and 15th of the month for that month’s meeting. The timestamp of the email will be used to determine if deadline was met.
4. If several people submit correct answer, a winner’s name will be drawn at the ARW meeting of that same month. Winner must be present to win, or another name will be drawn. If no winner is present after five drawings, then we skip the award for one month.
5. Both Full and Associate Members are eligible. ARW Board members are not eligible. But only one free dinner per winner per year.
6. The prize is a free dinner at the next ARW Monthly Meeting of the next consecutive month. You must RSVP and we cannot postpone the award. Other prizes may also be awarded.

DID YOU KNOW THAT ? .......Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the message, NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION, was removed
President Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) program. He promised: 1) That participation in the program would be completely voluntary,No longer voluntary 2) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the program,Now 7.65% on the first $90,000 3) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year,No longer tax deductible4) That the money the participants put into the independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and, Under Johnson the money was moved to The General Fund and spent5) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income, Under Clinton & Gore up to 85% of your Social Security can be taxed
Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month you may be interested in the following: ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ---- Q: Which political party took Social Security from the independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it? A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ----Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding? A: The Democratic Party ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ---- Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities? A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ---- Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants? A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!

NvFRW Regents are members and friends who step up to a higher level of membership and commitment to the mission and goals of our Nevada Federation.
