Design/ApplicationsBarden Series L and BSB Series ball screw support bearingsare manufactured specically for high performance ballscrew applications, where extreme rigidity requirementspreclude the use of standard angular contact bearings. Theinternal conguration has been designed to provide anoptimum combination of high rigidity, low drag torque, exceptional control of axial runout, higher running speedsand longer life.

Series L and BSB Series nonseparable angular contactbearings have cutaway shoulders on both the inner andouter rings. They can support very high thrust loads inone direction or combinations of radial and thrust loads, but not radial loading alone. Series L and BSB Seriesbearings are designed to provide machine tool drive systems with extreme axial rigidity, low drag tor que and minimal axial runout. They are intended for specicapplications in machine tools, e.g., ball screw supports, cross slides, X-Y table positioners and transfer tables. They should not be used in place of standard angularcontact spindle bearings.

These bearings are available in standard duplex orquadruplex sets. In addition,we will supply customcombination sets to meetspecialized applicationneeds.

Limiting SpeedsLimiting speeds shown in table are useful guide-lines. Actual speed limitsmust be based on theapplication characteristics.Life requirements, heattransfer conditions, loadingand lubrication methods are typical inuential factors.

PreloadsStandard values (heavy) shown in table will be suppliedunless otherwise specied. Barden recognizes that some applications do not require the full axial stif fness(compliance) of the standard preload and will supplybearings with custom-ground preloads if r equired.

SealsSome ball screw support bearings may also be available insealed versions. Ask your Barden sales engineer for details.

CagesBSB Series bearingshave a molded nylon, glass ber r einforcedpolyamide cage withspherical ball pockets.Series L bearings havea land-piloted cage ofreinforced phenolic, pre-cision-machined, with evenly spacedball pockets.

All metric (BSB Series) ball screwsupport bearings come with the moldednylon cage, standard. Series L bearings are equippedwith the phenolic cage, standard.

Mounting and Fitting Normal tting practice is line-to-line to loose for bothshaft and housing ts, as shown in table at right.

All bearing pairs and sets are match-marked on theiroutside diameter surfaces to indicate corr ect positioningof each bearing. Barden packaging also contains detailedinstructions for proper installation.

Recommendations for shaft and housing shoulderdiameters are based on maximum support of duplex-mounted bearings (see table). In circumstances with other mounting arrangements, consult BardenProduct Engineering.

Life CalculationsMost ball screw support bearing applications are subject toduty-cycle loading with constantly changing feeds, speedsand operating loads. These factors, in combination with theheavy preloads built into the bearings, make life calcula-tions dicult. Consult Barden Product Engineering forinformation which can be used in specic cases.

MaterialsAll ball screw support bearings (rings and balls) aremade from 52100 steel. Bearings are also available withX-life ultra rings and ceramic (silicon nitride) balls foreven greater speeds and longer life.
