Adopting energy-efficient practicesdoesn’t require a lifestyle overhaul.Start small. Tackle bedroom lightingfirst with minimal modifications thatwill equal big energy savings. Embraceenergy efficiency by first understand-ing industry lighting terms. Theincandescent light bulb – the bulb ofthe masses – uses wire to conduct elec-tricity that produces light. The prob-lem with this cost-effective and time-less illuminator comes from theamount of heat it produces.
“Before the realization of howmankind’s electrical activity impactsthe planet, the Edison-invented bulbwas the cheap and easy way to createlight,” says Steve Thomas, host ofPlanet Green’s “Renovation Nation”show. With today’s buildings account-ing for nearly 50 percent of energyused, looking for other options likecompact florescent lights or light-emitting diodes is more a necessitythan a feel-good move. “Energy savingis all about scale. Five people savingenergy in one home doesn’t make adifference – but five million does,”Thomas says. Here’s how to becomeone of the 5 million.
SSwwaapp bbuullbbss “For places that light quality is not
critical, like the closet or near the doorof the bedroom, switch to CFL or LEDbulbs,” Thomas says. In addition to
less energy output, using CFL andLED bulbs equals a decrease in elec-tric bills and less frequent trips tothe store for replacement bulbs.“CFL bulbs light a space with lesswattage, at a low cost, are dimmableand have good color quality. LEDbulbs are slightly more expensivebut last longer, use even less energyand have better quality light,” saysLori Dennis, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based LEED-certified interiordesigner.
When swapping out old for new, know how to read the packaging.Understanding which wattage goeswith different types of lighting fix-tures can be confusing. Whenreplacing a 60-watt incandescentbulb, look for descriptions like 60-Watt Replacement or Soft White 60on the CFL or LED bulb package.Any bulb with an Energy Star labelhas the backing of the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency.
UUssee ddiimmmmeerrssAdjust light needs by activity. For
bedside reading, increase the bright-ness; for less eye intensive activities, lower the intensity. “The lower thelight output, the less energy used.Simply put, dimmers save energy,”Dennis says.
FFiinndd tthhee ffllaammee“Beeswax candles with organic
cotton wicks create instant mood
lighting while being eco-friendly,”Dennis says. Set the stage for relax-ation after a long day by stepping back
in time with this ageless light source.

In today’s increasingly eco-con-scious world, manufacturers arechurning out “green” appliances fasterthan one of those new-fangled high-speed trains.
While that’s good news for the envi-ronment, all these options can get alittle overwhelming for the consumer.Sure, the goal is to save energy andwater, but homeowners and apart-ment dwellers alike also want theirappliances to be efficient, reliable, affordable and look pretty darn slick.
It’s a lot to ask, but, luckily, this isn’ta one-person train. Here, actual greendesigners, architects and homeownersweigh in on some of newest, mostpractical and just plain interestingproducts in the three most appliance-heavy rooms in the house.
TThhee KKiittcchheennIf a choice has to be made, ditch the
refrigerator first – it’s on 24-7, makingit the biggest energy vampire in thehouse. Models with the Energy Starlabel use at least 20-percent less ener-gy than current non-qualified models, cutting energy bills by $165 over thelifetime of a refrigerator, says MariaVargas, a spokeswoman for theEnergy Star program.
To optimize savings, purchase thesmallest refrigerator that will work ina given space (ideally 16 to 20 cubicfeet), skip the automatic ice-makersand opt for a top-mounted freezer, which uses 10- to 25-percent lessenergy than bottom-mounted or side-by-side versions. Amana has a newversion of top-mounted freezers instylish colors like Green Tea andMidnight Blue. The WhirlpoolLatitude bottom freezer with Frenchdoors features the Measured Fill sys-tem, which dispenses the exactamount of water in cups, liters orounces, an industry-first.
As for dishwashers, ones madebefore 1994 cost an extra $40 a yearon utility bills, compared to newerEnergy Star models. Bosch is knownfor making stainless steel dishwashersthat are not only energy and waterefficient, but also elegant and remark-ably quiet, which is what appealed toarchitect Matt Kirkpatrick, principaldesigner for Portland, Ore.-basedDesign for Occupancy. When he andhis girlfriend, Katherine Bovee,
recently built their own home, theyselected the Bosch SHX55M05UC.“We have a compact house (704square feet of living space),”Kirkpatrick says, “so if we hadinstalled something noisier, it wouldhave made our living room unusableevery time we ran a load of dishes.”
For a large family, try the new AskoXXL dishwashers instead – they boasta new four-rack-and-seven-basketconfiguration, and are still EnergyStar-certified.
Kirkpatrick and Bovee, however, went with Bosch again when selectingtheir cooktop, specifically the newerand more affordable NIT3065UCinduction model, which is more ener-gy efficient than both gas and electric– magnetic fields heat only the pot, sofar less energy is lost. The KenmoreElite 30” 4280 is comparable in cost($1,500 to $1,700), while Viking mod-els ring in at $3,000-plus.
TThhee BBaatthhrroooommReducing water usage in the loo is
key to avoiding flushing hard-earneddollars down the toilet – literally.
New to the United States in 2009,the Caroma Profile Smart features a1.28/.8 dual flush (press one buttonfor solid waste and another button forliquid waste) and has a sink integrat-ed into the top of the tank – every timeit flushes, clean water is automaticallycycled through the faucet for handwashing and then drains into the tankfor the next flush. Kirkpatrick and
Bovee selected this model for theirtiny bathroom because it saved spaceand money by eliminating the needfor an additional sink.
Although toilet/sink combinationsare commonplace in Europe,Australia and Japan, most Americansare only now becoming acquaintedwith them. But there are even moreavant garde options.
In a Sun-Mar Excel composting toi-let, liquid waste is evaporated and car-ried back to the atmosphere through avent system, while solid material isconverted into a nutrient-rich fertiliz-er that is perfectly safe to use in flowerbeds. The whole process is odorlessand reduces overall water use by up to50 percent. “Plus, they can be installedanywhere, as they don’t requireplumbing or a septic system,” saysSusanna Schultz, events and outreachmanager for Ecohaus, a home build-ing supplier with locations in Seattle,Portland, Ore., and San Francisco.
But if that’s a bit too green for thefamily bathroom, American Standard,Kohler and Toto also make cutting-edge commodes. “I like Toto’s newAquia Wall-Hung Dual-Flush modelbecause it’s both affordable and chic,”says Kirsten Flynn, principal designerfor the Bay Area-based interior designfirm, Sustainable Home. Or, considerthe Brondell Simple Flush -– it attach-es to an existing tank and converts itinto a dual flush for less than $100.
TThhee LLaauunnddrryy RRoooomm
When it comes to selecting a wash-ing machine, look for machines withcustomizable cycles, water levels andtemperatures, as well as the EnergyStar, WaterSense and High Efficiencylabels. In general, front-loading wash-ers are more efficient and easier onclothes, although, some top-loaders,such as the Whirlpool Cabrio andMaytag Bravos series, also get highmarks from Consumer Reports’GreenerChoices.org, one of Flynn’sfavorite resources for product recom-mendations.
Among front-loaders, standoutsinclude the GE Profile with Steam, which can pair with a SmartDispensepedestal that holds up to six months ofdetergent and fabric softener, auto-matically dispensing the right amountfor each load. Or, if getting the mostwear and least tear out of thosedesigner jeans is the goal, try one ofMiele’s Energy Star machines. Theirpatented Honeycomb drum isdesigned to create a thin cushion ofwater that cradles clothes as it rotates, preventing friction and snagging sothat fabrics can last up to four timeslonger. This technology has beenavailable on select models since 2002,but was recently added to the entirerange, says Paul McCormack, aspokesman for Miele.
Energy efficiency among dryers isnot significantly different, however, gas dryers are generally cheaper torun and create only about 40 percentas much carbon dioxide as electricdryers. The Maytag PerformanceSeries MGDE200XW has a specialcycle to preserve denim, and thefuturistic GE Profile Harmony SeriesDPGT750GC features the CleanSpeaksystem. When the washer is opened toremove the load, it automatically pre-sets the drying cycle and temperaturefor the dryer via a serial cable.
But if space is an issue, the best betmight be a washer/dryer combo, suchas the all new Energy Star-certifiedLG WM3987HW which runs on stan-dard voltage electricity, doesn’trequire venting and fits in a closet.Commonplace in Europe,washer/dryer combos are often hardto find in the United States. But nowClackamas, Ore.-based Splendide(known for making combos for RVs)has also started making units for thehome.

Here’s how to create an efficientgarden out of any outdoor or indoorspace and pinpoint which fruits andvegetables are worth the time, energyand money spent. Read on for tipsabout the most forgiving, most prolif-ic, most versatile and, of course, mostdelicious varieties.
TToommaattooeess“Tomatoes are the No. 1 garden crop
in the United States for great reasons,”says Rhonda Massingham Hart, theDeer Park, Wash.-based author of“The Dirt Cheap Green Thumb”(Storey Publishing, 2009). They arerelatively easy to grow, beautiful, deli-cious, bountiful and loaded withnutrients – lycopene when cooked, vitamins A and C when raw.”
Tomatoes can be used in everythingfrom salads to shish kabobs, Hartsays. Some, like Roma, are thick andmeaty and just right for sauces, whileothers, like Red Currant, are sweetand tiny, just right for snacking.
And while tomatoes can grow justabout anywhere, including upsidedown, Hart says “they do best in deep, beautiful soil – rich in organic matter, well balanced in nutrients (includingcalcium, a deficiency of which canlead to the dreaded blossom end rot).”Soil should retain moisture yet drainwell, Hart says, who prefers to grow
her tomatoes in raised beds of gener-ously amended organic soil.
SSqquuaasshhJust how easy is it to grow squash or
zucchini? “The beginning gardener will buy a
six pack, plant them all and theirneighbors will slam their doors in herface because she tries to give it allaway,” laughs Yvonne Savio, commonground garden program managerwith the University of CaliforniaCooperative Extension program inLos Angeles County. Squash comes inseveral varieties, from yellow crook-neck to the traditional green zucchini, and are “just naturally prolific,” Saviosays. Plant three or four seeds everymonth beginning in April or May to“have one or two squash a week for theentire summer,” Savio says. And whilezucchini can be used in everythingfrom salads to ratatouille, the biggestyield comes from baking it into zuc-chini bread.
SSttrraawwbbeerrrriieessStrawberries are easy to grow, both
in beds in the ground or in a variety ofcontainer types, from strawberry jarsto hanging baskets, Hart says. “Somevarieties, called Day Neutral varieties– Tri-Star is one example – will pro-
duce all summer long,” she says.“Others, called Everbearing types, willhave one big flush in mid- to late-June, followed by a second late sum-mer crop. And June bearers willsplurge almost all of the berries inJune for a single harvest – a best fit forthose who intend to can or freeze.”
FFiigg TTrreeeess“They are really forgiving,” Savio
says. “[Gardeners] can chop the heckout of a fig tree and it will still put outfruit. It has two fruiting cycles. That isthe tree I encourage people to playwith if they are just getting into thefruiting. A good tree not to get over-whelmed with doing it right orwrong.”
SSppiinnaacchh “New Zealand spinach is a perenni-
al spinach and ground cover and isbest in the ground,” says ChristopherNyerges of Los Angeles, co-founder ofthe School of Self-Reliance and gar-dening author. “It is not difficult togrow, which is why I grow it. It isperennial, so I am able to collect someyear round. I’ve been collecting fromthe same expanding patch for about20 years. I use it as I would use regu-lar spinach, in salads, soups and witheggs.”
AAssppaarraagguuss “Asparagus is great because it is
perennial,” Nyerges says. “Plant it inappropriate soil, good sun, proper irri-gation and there will be asparagusshoots every spring for maybe 50years from one patch.”
To save a little time, energy andexpenses, Nyerges suggests first decid-ing what will get eaten. Before plant-ing, make a list of the vegetables andfruits that the family enjoys. “Thencircle all those on that list that areideal in the neighborhood,” Nyergessays. “Maybe a specific variety is [thebest fit].” To determine the properplanting techniques, contact a localnursery for advice and buy a book ongardening.
It’s survival of the fittest in Nyerges’garden. The fruits and vegetables thatcan survive with minimal care are theones he keeps around; the more high-maintenance plants die off but thatjust makes for a stronger garden. “Ithen cultivate and work on the sur-vivors,” he says, “having a garden thatis very productive with very littlework.”

The pressure to lightenone’s carbon footprint seemsto increase with every newbatch of green products thathits the market. Yet, a majorlifestyle shift isn’t required tobe a bit friendlier to the envi-ronment. Armed with theright selection of habits, products and a few experttips anyone can start livinggreener today. Here’s an ener-gywise head start.
“The mantra of the greenliving movement is reduce, reuse, recycle and … think interms of your everyday life,”says Antoinette Nue, a greenliving consultant based inDecatur, Ga. “There are sim-ple adjustments that you can
make in terms of everyday liv-ing.”
Energy-efficient appliancesare a good starting point. While many may be moreexpensive than their power-guzzling counterparts, thosewith the Energy Star labelshould “recover their invest-ment in increased energy effi-ciency through utility bill sav-ings, within a reasonableperiod of time,” according toU.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency standards.
Nicole Sassaman, interiordesigner and remodeling spe-cialist, advises green con-sumers to invest in top-quali-ty appliances and moredurable design elements. “Ithink people are using a lotmore man-made products,”
she says. “I’m also seeing a lotof reclaimed woods, especial-ly in flooring.”
Man-made materials likequartz stone and CaesarStoneare great for countertops andcost about the same as gran-ite. Though engineered, they’re mostly composed ofthe natural mineral quartzand can be recycled.
Nue encourages consumerswho are trying to create moreenergy-efficient spaces tolook for products that are“cradle-to-cradle” in terms ofbeing reborn from somethingelse. “It’s not really enough tobe recyclable,” she says. “If aproduct is recyclable, it canalso be made from recyclablematerials.” Check and com-pare products to see which contain post-consumer mate-
rials that have already beenused once or even multipletimes.
When shopping for greenhousehold and commercialproducts, Nue suggestschecking for EPA’s Design forthe Environment (DfE) label, which indicates that a scien-tific review team has screenedall the product’s componentsfor potential human healthand environmental effectsbased on current EPA stan-dards. Also, check for thecommon natural cleansingmaterials on the ingredientslist, such as baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar.
You can even make yourown green cleansers, Nuesays. Hot water and the com-mon natural substances men-tioned before are enough totackle the common house-hold chores. One of Nue’sfavorite natural cleansers isgrapefruit seed extract, whichshe describes as a powerfulantifungal.
A simple change like usingan all-natural cleanser orswitching to more energy-efficient appliances can makea difference. And smallupgrades can bode well forenergywise living withoutspending much more green.
