Seven simple ingredients of xeriscapingBy G. Owen YostLandscape Architect

Xeriscaping is a term that’sgetting a lot of use, particularlyin light of stratospheric waterrates. Most people intendxeriscaping to require signifi-cantly less water, but few peo-ple can say exactly what it is,much less pronounce it.

First of all, it’s pronounced asif the “x” were a “z”; using theGreek root “xeros” whichmeans “dry”. Think of the wordas “zeriscaping”. It certainlydoesn’t mean no water, itmeans a minimum of water —used efficiently.

It originated with the Denverwater department, in theireffort to get users to conservewater. In addition to usingwater-efficient plants, it alsoconcerns landscaping practicesthat are based on a bare mini-mum of water usage. A yardthat’s truly xeriscaped not onlyconserves water, but is good-looking, protects the environ-ment, reduces water waste, andwill cut your utility bills. Itrevolves around seven princi-ples, which are;

Start with a plan. Develop aplan that divides your yard intoareas of similar water needs:one area for low water, one formore water, one for wateringoccasionally by hand, one forno water and so on. Committhis “master plan” to paper,tack it on the wall, and let itguide your every move even if ittakes several years to get yourlandscape the way you want it.

Improve and analyze yoursoil. Most soil around Dentoncould stand some improve-ment. Check with the CountyExtension Agent (565-5535) ora local nursery. Compost, cer-tain organisms, crushed vol-canic rock...may help yourplants utilize water more effi-ciently. Fundamentally, youshould alter your landscapingpractices to coordinate withour environment, rather thanattempt to alter the environ-ment drastically — includingthe soil.

Use practical lawn areas.Reduce your lawn to a size youactually use and can reasonablycare for. It takes roughly anhour each week of the growingseason to maintain each 100square feet of lawn you have,and a lawn demands about tentimes as much water as estab-lished ground cover or a shrubmass. That’s expensive! Unlessyou shrink your lawn’s sizegreatly, following the otherxeriscape principles won’t helpyou much.

Select appropriate plants.Using water-efficiency as aguide, select native plants orplants from other parts of theworld that are adapted to northTexas’ harsh temperatures andlow summer rainfall. These arethe plants (and there are hun-dreds of them) that will be fair-ly self-sufficient, and need verylittle extra water (other thannormal rainfall). Carefullyselected plants require a lot lesssoil amendment and fertilizer,too. Several nurseries havegood selections, and KeepDenton Beautiful selects a“xeriscape yard-of-the-month”that may give you some goodideas.

Water efficiently. When youwater your plants, water deeply- letting it soak deep into thesoil (several inches at least), notrun off into the gutter. Doingthis on a weekly basis uses lesswater overall than watering alittle bit every day, and resultsin healthier plants. And try towater early in the mornings,when the temperature is lower,wind is calmer, and all thatexpensive water is less apt to bewasted through evaporation.

Use an organic mulch. Alayer of mulch greatly reduceswater loss and weed growth.It’s available aat the landfillfrom Denton’s WaterReclamation Plant, or a localnursery. Or just shred oldleaves to create a naturalmulch. Make sure to put abouta 3” layer of it around newplants (in a doughnut shape),and refresh it every few

months.Maintain appropriately. A

properly maintained landscapeis better able to withstanddrought, pests, and will reducewater demand. The key is toavoid over-maintaining a yard,so that it looks orderly, but isextremely wasteful. Avoid tra-ditional practices such as cut-ting lawns and hedges unnatu-rally low, vigorously rakingaway all natural yard debris likeleaves, pruning more than youreally need to, killing all theinsects in your yard and puttingout a lot of artificial fertilizer.All waste water!

Those are the sevenxeriscape principles. They’renot difficult, expensive or elab-orate. In fact, they’re simplycommon sense. Actually, somepeople may already have a

xeriscaped yard and not realizeit, using only their well-tunedsense of logic as a guideline.

Other homeowners wouldlike to redesign their yard into axeriscape, but face neighbor-hood design committees ordeed restrictions that say theyhave to have a lawn. I’d feelobliged to question the legalityand enforceability of any rulethat requires a homeowner tospend a lot of extra money andrestricts basic Constitutionalrights. I’d think that as long asyour newly-xeriscaped yard isattractive and well-maintained,you’d be getting no visits fromany grass police.

Most people can apply thexeriscape principles to theirhouse. But these seven princi-ples apply equally well to thelandscapes of apartment build-

ings, stores, office buildings,places of worship, and so on.Use them and your utility costsshould go way down over thelong haul. And you’ll have anattractive, low-maintenanceyard all summer long.

“As Texans buy appliancesthat can help cut their energybills, they can also save on theprice of the appliances withthese rebates,” said Combs in anews release.

“Consumers can start buyingthe appliances on Dec. 20 and,after installation, mail in theircompleted rebate applicationform and a copy of the receiptto be eligible for the rebates.”

Rebate forms will be avail-able for consumers to down-load and print closer to thestart of the purchase period onDec. 20.

The state is also workingwith retailers to make theforms available at stores at thattime. Both the purchase receiptand the postmark on the enve-lope submitting the rebateapplication must be dated onor after Dec. 20, 2010. Themail-in rebate applications willbe processed on a first-come,first-served basis based on thepostmark on the rebate appli-

cation envelope. After the program starts, a

daily countdown calculator ofrebate funds will be availableonline to help consumers gaugethe amount of funds processedand amount available forrebates. Consumers who buyan ENERGY STAR® appliancemust replace and dispose of anold appliance of the same typeto be eligible for a rebate. Anadditional $75 rebate is avail-able for recycling the old appli-ance. Proof of disposal or recy-cling is required, and detailswill be provided on the rebateapplication form.

To qualify for a rebate, appli-cants must have a valid Texasresidential address and followall program rules.

Texas consumers are limitedto a maximum of two rebatesper household, which includesany rebates received from theApril 2010 program.
