WelcomeandthankyouforreadingourAOTAStudentNewsle&er.AstheAssemblyofStudentDelegates(ASD)SteeringCommi&ee,weareagroupofelectedofficersandstudentswho

aimtoserveasaliaisonbetweenthegoverningbodiesofAOTA.TheASDprovidesamechanismfor

theexpressionofstudentconcernsandoffersameanswherebystudentscanhaveeffecveinput

intotheaffairsofourprofessionalassociaon.Inotherwords,YOUhaveavoiceinAOTAasa

studentandweencourageyoualltouseito]en!

IwouldliketointroducemyselfasyournewChairpersonoftheASDSteeringCommi&eeforthe

2013-2014year.IamexcitedandhumbledtohavebeenelectedbystudentsnaonwidetotakeonthischallengetorepresentstudentconcernstotheBoardofDirectorsandtheRepresentave

AssemblyaswellasoverseetheprojectsandconcernsoftheASDandtheSteeringCommi&ee.Asa

MastersstudentinoccupaonaltherapyattheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia,Ihavebeen

encouragedtobecomealeaderfromday1andhavetakenonthatresponsibilitywillinglytomakea

differenceatmyschool,inmyfieldworkplacements,andwithourstateandnaonalprofessional

associaons.

ThethemeofthisissueisleadershipandIwanttomakeitveryclearthatleadershipcomesin

manyforms.Ihavechosentoexhibitleadershipinlargewaysbysengandreachinggoalsfor

myselfthatincludemycurrentprofessionalposionwithinAOTAandthato]encomewithatle.

However,IseesomuchpotenalineverystudentImeettocontributetoourprofessioninthe

smallestofwaysfromprovidingastrongexplanaonofoccupaonaltherapytothepersoninlineat

thegrocerystorewhoasksaboutOT,toreachingintoyourpockettopayforaprofessional

membershipinAOTAasafinanciallystrugglingstudent.Evenreadingthisnewsle&erandpassingit

alongtoyourfellowclassmatesisdemonstraonofleadership.Ichallengeallstudentsoutthereto

findwaystobealeaderintheirownuniquewaythatisvitaltotheconnuinggrowthandstrength

ofourprofession.Wearethefutureofoccupaonaltherapyandleadershipstartswithyou!

JeffersonUniversityinPhiladelphia,PA.HewasinspiredtopursueOTwhenhisuncle

contractedararelungdiseasewhilehewasa&endingTheOhioStateUniversityforhis

undergraduatedegree.[Itprogressivelytookawayhisdailyindependence.Watching

hisstrugglesledmetoOTandthehopetohelpothers,andtheirfamilies,meetthe

dailychallengesa]eralifealteringillnessorinjury.Joshparcipatedinthesamechallengesthatweallfaceduringouroccupaonal

therapystudiesfromexamstofieldwork,andalsoassumedleadershiprolesashis

SOTAPresident,StudentFacultyTaskForceRepresentave,aGraduateAssistantand

TeachingAssistant.Sohowdidhealsofindthemetoco-foundthebrOTMovement?

Werenotsure,butweregladhedid.

ThebrOTMovement,Inc.isanon-profitorganizaonfoundedbyoccupaonal

therapystudentsBrendanKiernan,JoshSpringerandHoumanZiaiwiththemissionto

promot[egenderandculturaldiversitythroughoutoccupaonaltherapyprogramsacrossthecountry.BrOTwasfoundedin2012followingaspeechbyDr.Florence

Clark,formerAOTAPresident,attheAOTA/NBCOTNaonalStudentConclave.Dr.

Clarkchallengedthestudentsina&endancetohelpourprofessionachievethe

CentennialVisionbycreangadiverseworkforce.Withonly10%ofalloccupaonal

therapistsbeingmales,Kiernan,Springer,andZiaisetouttochangeourprofessional

demographicstobemorerepresentaveofthediverserangeofclientsweaimto

serve.Springerstates,Inordertobestserveourpaents,theprofessionof

occupaonaltherapyneedstobejustasdiverseinordertomeeteachindividualneed.

Forminganon-profitingradschoolwasnoteasy.Alongwithjugglinghisother

leadershiprolesandstudies,Springerfacedthechallengesofdevelopingawebsite,design,logo,promoonalitemsandthefinancialstructureandlegalpaperwork

involvedincreanganon-profit.Springersaysthatacademicswerealwaysthe

priority,butheandhisfellowbrOTfoundershadmanynightsoflostsleep.Thethree

ofuswantedthesamegoalandwoulddoanythingtomakeithappen,Springersays,

andthathewasveryfortunatetohaveanexcellentco-founderandcommunityoutreachdirectortohelpcarryoutbrOTsmission.

Springer:Thebiggestinfluencehasbeen,andwillalwaysbe,myparentsandtwoolderbrothers.Iwouldn'tbehalfthemanIamtodayifitwasn'tfortheirguidance,support,

wisdomandlove.Intheacademicrealm,ShelleyWallock,afacultymemberatThomas

Jefferson,hasplayedasignificantroleinthegrowthofmyleadershipskills.Shelley,a

dynamicleaderherself,mentoredandpushedmetobecomeawell-roundedleaderin

manyaspectsofmylife.

ASD:Wheredoyouseeyourselfinoccupaonaltherapyinthefuture?

Springer:Tobehonest,Iamnotcompletelysure.Shortterm,acareerinthemilitary,

handclinic,orburnunitinterestsme.Longterm,IwouldliketobecomeagraduateeducatorinthefieldofOT.

ASD:Whatmessagewouldyougivetostudentsaboutleadership?

Springer:Don'tbeafraidtoleadorthinkyoucannotbealeader.Whileitmayseem

daunng,itisthebestwaytotrulybuildonyourstrengthswhiledefiningyour

weaknessesfromwhichyoucanimproveupon.

ASD:WhatmessagewouldyougivetostudentsaboutAOTA?

Springer:Taketheopportunitytobeapartofthisorganizaon.Itprovidesyouthe

abilitytonetworkwithleaderswhoarecurrentlyshapingthefutureofourprofession.Yourmembershipallowsyoutobeanintegralpartofthedecisionsmade.Don'tsit

backandwaitforsomeoneelsetodeterminewhatOTwillbecomeinthefuture,bea
