Dear Friends,
With this weekend’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord we close out the
Christmas season. Over the days since December 25th we have walked
together through a methodical unfolding of the manifestation of God in
Jesus: first at his birth to his parents and the shepherds, then to the world of
the Gentiles through the Magi, and today his identity is revealed to those in
the Jewish community who were with John and present at the Jordan for
his baptism.
The baptism of Jesus can get us thinking about our own baptism. We call
to mind this event each time we enter the church and bless ourselves with
holy water. The waters of baptism both healed the rift caused by Original
Sin and “grafted us onto the vine,” making us members of Christ’s body
and adopted children of God. Our baptism was the most important event in
our lives, opening up for us access to eternal life.
Workshops on Evangelization are being put on in each of the
Archdiocesan Vicariates in connection with Renew My Church. The
workshop for our Vicariate is Friday, January 18th at St. Frances of Rome
in Cicero–please see page three in this bulletin with more information.
Parish staffs will take part in an afternoon session, and parishioners
(especially those with leadership roles) are invited to the evening session.
“Evangelization” is one of those church-y words that can be off-putting.
Yet it is at the core of what we who have been baptized are called to; lack
of it is the reason that so many of our Catholic communities are withering.
We used to think about evangelization in terms of sending missionaries to
foreign countries where people have never heard of Christ, but the real
need for evangelization in our time is with those in our own homes,
neighborhoods and communities who have heard of Jesus, but who
have never developed a solid friendship with him. There is a good
chance that the person sitting next to you in the pews has not really ever
been evangelized. Let’s face it: many of us were socialized into the faith,
meaning that its trappings became part of our lives, part of our routines.
But meaningful friendship with the Lord, friendship that transforms and
seeks expression, is something that many Catholics find to be elusive.
We are moving into a “make-it-or-break-it” phase in the life of the
Catholic community of Chicago. The Holy Spirit is calling us all to a
deeper relationship with the Lord, a relationship that so moves us that we
cannot help but want others to experience it as well.
May your week reflect the encounter with Christ
we experienced at Mass today.

Stewardship Committee
Ascension’s Stewardship Committee is seeking
additional members and invites service-minded
parishioners wanting to be involved, but perhaps
unsure which group fits best. The programs and
events which are sponsored by the Stewardship
Committee communicates with and supports other
purpose-driven parish organizations: aiding them in
spreading their word, attracting new members, and
better fulfilling their missions. We meet once a
month and are responsible for planning and hosting
the Ministry Fair and the upcoming (inaugural)
Volunteer Appreciation Event.
Men’s Spirituality
Please join us on Saturday, January 19 at 7:30
am in the Parish Center to share our experiences of
living a Christian life. We socialize, pray and read
and reflect on the upcoming Sunday Scripture.

Home and School Family Service Project Day Ascension's Home and School will have a "Family Service Project Day" in the school gym on February 2 to
finish off Catholic Schools Week. Families can all come together and volunteer a little bit of their time to
assemble care packages for the elderly, the disabled, our troops and residents of children's hospitals! There is
no age limit, all are welcome. More details to come.
Pre-Lent Morning of Reflection
Fr. Anthony Gittins, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost, will lead a morning of reflection for
all parishioners on Saturday, February 23. An international speaker, author, and professor at Catholic
Theological Union, Fr. Gittins will address the topic “Growing in Discipleship.” More information will follow
in subsequent bulletins and in our weekly e-blast.
Exploring our Catholic Faith
This year during Lent the Staff would like to offer a 10 minute infomercial after Sunday Masses on some
aspect of our Catholic Faith. This has been done at other parishes with good success. We recognize that
people often want to “go a little deeper” into their faith, but that often there just isn’t time to attend an evening
session or make a longer time commitment. These would take place in the front of church right after Mass
ends. A timer will keep us to our 10 minutes.
We’d like to offer topics that parishioners might like to explore and that would pique their interest. It
might be a topic covered in the Catechism or an aspect of the symbolism found in our Church, questions about
some of the rituals of our sacraments, a briefing on a particular book of the Bible…there are so many things in
our Catholic Faith to explore!
If there is a topic (or topics) that you would like to learn more about, please send your suggestions to Mary
Catherine at [email protected] or call her at 708-434-1533. Thank you in advance!
Faith Sharing Groups during Lent
Once again this year we hope to gather parishioners at one another’s homes for some prayer and study time
on the Sunday Readings. On Thursday evening, February 28 at 7:00 pm in the Pine Room, David Anderson
and Mary Catherine Meek will provide some guidance for anyone planning to be part of a faith sharing group.
All are invited to attend; hosts and leaders of groups are strongly encouraged to be present.
More information will be found in subsequent bulletins and in our weekly e-blast newsletter.
Sign up now for Living Your Strengths
Ascension’s Living Your Strengths journey helps parishioners identify one's God -given talents,
determine how to develop them into strengths, explore how these talents and strengths can be applied
into all aspects of one's life, and develop a greater sense of community with other Ascension parish
members. Over 350 members of the Ascension community have attended the Living Your Strengths program,
including parish staff, lay leadership and school faculty. Please consider joining us! Our next Workshop is on
Saturday, March 23 at 8:00 am. Sign up at ascensionstrengthsfindit.eventbrite.com or contact Kelly Conroe
at [email protected] for more information.
Lenten Evening of Reflection
On April 4, Adult Faith Formation and our Ministers of Care invite you to join them for a Lenten Evening
of Reflection with Fr. Robin Ryan who will present “Hope in the Midst of Suffering.”

CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been
celebrating the appearance of the divine presence
in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and
Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by
some wandering magi from the East. Today we
celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group
gathered at the Jordan River.
John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he
recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as
Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and
heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my
beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life
of teaching and service. Soon he would start
calling others to join him.
Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus.
In today’s second reading, he announces the heart
of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who
is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are
called to spread that message and to serve God’s
word.
