2013 was a busy year – God’s Pantry Food Bank made possible more than 20 million

meals! This was no easy feat, and we were only able to accomplish this with your help!

It is truly amazing when you think about the depth of the region’s support for the Food

Bank and our mission. Our food donors contribute nutritious food items. Our volunteers

repack the food or assist hungry families in our pantries, mobile distributions, Kids Cafes

and Backpack sites. Our financial donors support key initiatives and programs, which

ensure our success. Our staff works tirelessly with our member agencies to get the food to

the people who need it most – 1 in 6 Kentuckians at risk of hunger.

Our work together helps to ensure that Central and Eastern Kentuckians have access to

enough food to nourish their bodies and enable them to work, learn, care for their families

and participate in their community. Over the past year we have improved the quantity and

quality of the food we distribute, expanded our outreach efforts through the Food for

Underserved Counties Program and our new Senior Mobile Pantry, and continued to

strengthen and expand our infrastructure to better meet the needs presented to us today as

well as in the future.

Fifty years ago, President Johnson declared a war on poverty and unemployment in the

United States. This is a big deal. Progress has been made in the last 50 years: average

incomes of the poorest Americans have increased, the share of adults with a college degree

has increased, and infant mortality rates have improved. Public benefits, in particular, have

helped to reduce the rate of children living in poverty. But we all recognize there is still

much work to be done. With your support we lead this fight against the injustice of

hunger in Central and Eastern Kentucky. In our service area today 1 in 4 children are at risk

of hunger. I think we can all agree this is far too many Kentucky children. Together we can

solve hunger – and in turn improve the health of Kentucky families and the outlook for the

future of the Commonwealth.

It is an enormous undertaking to feed hundreds of thousands of

people in our 50-county service area. But it is one that we could

never do without you – our food and financial donors, member

agencies, volunteers, elected officials and advocates. You truly make

a difference, and for that we are thankful!

While the primary function of God’s Pantry FoodBank is to serve as a reliable food resource forour nearly 300 partner organizations, we know

there are many who fall into pockets of need that require extra focus if we are to reach them with thesustenance they require to thrive.In response, we operate several programs to meet individuals and families where they are with healthy nutritious food. We focus on at-risk children and senior citizens who are disproportionately affected byhunger and have little opportunity to change their situations on their own.

REDUCE HUNGER

BackPackOne in four Kentucky children misses meals regularly. Even mild malnutrition can lead to learning delays,school absences and behavior problems. Studies have shown that a well-nourished child can concentratebetter in class, has fewer behavioral problems in school and has fewer overall health issues. God’s PantryFood Bank seeks to alleviate hunger among our most vulnerable population.In FY 2013, we sent home 25,855 BackPacks full of food with at-risk school children. This is done through partnerships with schools that identify at-risk kids and distribute the packs we provide. The food is nutritious,kid-friendly, easy to open, and needs little to no preparation.

Fayette County Pantry ProgramIn addition to its role as a regional food bank, God’s Pantry Food Bank operates multiple pantry locations inFayette County. In doing so, we continue the legacy of our founder, Mim Hunt. The Fayette County PantryProgram provides hungry families and individuals in Fayette County with a supply of wholesome food whichlasts as long a week for most families.In FY 2013, the Fayette County Pantry Program provided food to more than 24,000 families. Because pantry programs are geared toward families, we know we are serving a wide age range through this program, including children and seniors.

Kids CafeToo many hungry children fall through the cracks – especially during evening hours and schools breaks.Kids Cafe is a collaborative effort designed to provide children with the nutritious meals they so desperatelyneed when other dependable resources are not available. Kids Cafe programs provide free meals andsnacks to low-income children through a variety of existing community locations where children congregatesuch as community centers, Boys and Girls Clubs and churches.In FY 2013, God’s Pantry Food Bank Kids Cafe sites served 28,631 meals to youth at eight different locations in Fayette, Fleming, and Harlan counties.

Senior Pantry ProgramGod’s Pantry Food Bank’s newest program aims to increase senior citizens’ access to food. Our Food Bankcurrently serves 9,400 senior citizens each month through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.However, we have 1,834 individuals on our waiting list. Much like the Food for Underserved Counties pro-gram that targets counties with little to no emergency food assistance, the Senior Pantry Program is re-stricted to senior citizens (over age 60). Participants receive a blend of produce, refrigerated, frozen, anddry goods. The program began in March of 2013 and immediately began serving 144 individuals each month. In FY 2014 we plan to expand even more.

Commodity Supplemental Food ProgramThe Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a partnership with the US Department of Agricultureto supply seniors with a mix of food that fills in the gaps that are typically seen in the diet of this population.Individuals 60 years and older who qualify based on age and income level receive a well-rounded mix of fruits, vegetables, juices, grains and proteins once each month. In FY 2013 we distributed this food to an average of 9,400 individuals across all 50 counties that we serve.

Food for Underserved Counties ProgramSome counties in our service area lack the resources to consistently distribute sufficient food to those whoneed it. The Food Bank carefully monitors the amount of food that is distributed against the poverty levels ineach county. When this measure consistently falls below minimum standards, the Food for UnderservedCounties program is put in place to meet the needs of the underserved areas. We work with local organizations and volunteers to provide food and seek to develop long-term solutions and support that will eventually address food insecurity in each county. Each month, we send a truckload offood that is distributed cafeteria style to approximately 144 families. In FY 2013 we provided food to 19,248families in 10 Kentucky counties.

God’s Pantry Food Bank works directly with nearly 300 organizations across a 50-county

(16,000+ square mile) service area to get food out to those in need.

These organizations run as many as 380 different programs. This is because some run multiple

programs, such as a food pantry and a Kids Cafe, or a senior center and a CSFP site.
